PVSD Provides Summer Enrichment Program By Ann Mead Ash
Preventing summer boredom and giving children an academic boost are among the goals of Summer Enrichment Camp, a Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) initiative being held at Paradise Elementary School from July 10 through 26. A character education program overseen by the Together Initiative is held in conjunction with the camp, as is a baby sitter training course. This year, a special STEM program is being held at the Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) for 20 interested learners entering fourth through sixth grades. PVSD is a school-wide Title 1 district with close to 60 percent of students receiving free and reduced lunches. Summer Enrichment Camp includes academic instruction at the school for select kindergarten through seventhgrade students from 8:30 a.m. to See PVSD Summer Camp pg 12

Payload specialist Roger Crouch (left), accompanied by Pequea Valley Intermediate School teacher Rob Webb, spoke at the opening of the school’s remodeled planetarium in May. The facility is the site of a STEM camp for 20 area students.
Cavod Campers To Present “The Lion King Jr.”
GOTR Endowment Puts Focus On Future By Ann Mead Ash
Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West never wants to see a girl miss out on taking part in the program because of a lack of funds. “The worst thing we can hear is that a girl didn’t participate because it costs too much money,” said West. “We want to make the program accessible to every girl regardless of financial limitations.” The GOTR endowment, created in honor of Ellen McCabe, West’s stepmother, and administered by the Lancaster Community Foundation, will work to make sure that never happens. “The money GOTR will (receive) from the endowment will go directly to financial assistance for girls in need,” See GOTR Endowment pg 3
Nearly 50 Cavod Musical Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17 will make up the cast of “The Lion King Jr.,” which will be staged at Cavod Theatre at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Members of the public are invited to purchase tickets and bring their families to the shows. Ellen McCabe greeted a Girls on the Run (GOTR) 5K participant as she completed her run. McCabe’s family has given an endownment to GOTR Lancaster in her memory.

Asked to describe the challenges of staging the well-known “The Lion King Jr.” on the Cavod stage with rehearsal
time of about two weeks, director Cordell Huyard launched into a series of exclamations. “This is an epic show,” proclaimed Huyard. “It’s huge.” Working with nearly 50 Cavod Musical See “The Lion King Jr.” pg 9

PENNYSAVER in the future. “(The endowment embodies) the intention to continue supporting girls for generations,” she said. West noted that the funds will support Lancasterarea young people in years to come. “Sustainability is key. Our thought process was that if you invest, you want to make sure the money will be used correctly,” she said. “Should GOTR ever cease to exist, the endowment will be used for another organization that supports youths in Lancaster.” Johnson lauded the Wests for their forward thinking. “Endowments create an important opportunity to keep money working positively in our community over time,” she said, noting that while many people make gifts to causes, only a small percentage leave funds to an organization. “When people are gone, their gifts are gone,” said Johnson. West said that she hopes area residents will consider the endowment in their planned giving. “We invite and encourage the community to give toward the endowment fund,” West said. Readers who would like to learn more about the endowment may visit www.lanc found.org/fund/girls-on-the -run-endowment-fund.

for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. According to West, McCabe was an integral part of GOTR Lancaster from its inception in March 2009. “She talked to us about fundraising and helped us find donors,” said West, who noted that McCabe willingly shared her knowledge of how to run a nonprofit organization

explained West. GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson elaborated, “We will receive a percentage each year based on how much is in (the fund),” she said, adding that about half the girls who take part in the program receive scholarship funds. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development
with West and Johnson. “She was very much a cheerleader and encourager who got us really excited and helped us to stay focused throughout the entire process,” said West. “The entire way, (McCabe) was there giving us ideas and supporting us in any way we needed.” When McCabe passed away in the fall of 2016, West’s husband, Peter, made a suggestion. “My husband said, ‘Ellen loved GOTR, and she would do anything for it,’” shared West, adding, “She saw how it was changing these girls.” Peter suggested the family start an endowment fund in McCabe’s memory for GOTR. “Ellen felt no matter how much money you have, you should give a percentage away,” said West. Seeing the work of GOTR continue is important to both West and Johnson. “We want the same values to continue (into the future) for girls in the community and the thousands of girls we reach every year,” explained Johnson. “That can’t happen unless we have bigpicture thinkers who value today and tomorrow equally. Our children are our future, and that is where hope lives.” According to Johnson, creating the endowment is an investment

and vintage cars will be parked in the lot for visitors to examine. Artists may be observed as they work “en plein air,” and children may participate in games and activities. Food - including homemade baked goods - will available for purchase. Artwork may be acquired for set prices, and bids may be placed in a silent auction of quality items donated by local businesses. Guests are invited to wear vintage clothing to the event, and they may bring lawn chairs and blankets to relax and enjoy the afternoon.
The “Roadside Attractions” art exhibit will be on display in the LCAA’s Kauffman Gallery from July 22 to Thursday, Aug. 16. Summer is traditionally the time for road trips and vacations, so this themed membership show will focus on things on and off the road. Members of the art association have depicted their interpretation of roadside attractions in a variety of mediums and techniques. Additionally, Joanne Mark’s artwork will be displayed in the LCAA’s Steinmetz Gallery from July 22 to Aug. 16 in an exhibit titled “Figures: Ancient and Contemporary.” Recently, Mark has been using a limited palette to create subtly toned figures on soft backgrounds. She studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Arts and is an award-winning artist. The LCAA is a nonprofit organization that welcomes new
members who have an interest in exhibiting artwork or promoting the arts. Classes are available throughout the year and are open to members and nonmembers alike. The LCAA’s gallery is open year-round on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, readers may contact the gallery at 717687-7061 or lcaanews@yahoo.com or visit www.lcaaonline.org. at Water Street Mission. “ We’re trying to touch as many people as possible,” Sanders said, explaining the Pet Pantry’s geographic reach. Both the Pet Pantry and Furever Home exist through public support and private fundraising like the summer shopping fair. Volunteers are integral to the organizations’ operation. Krueger noted that Furever Home can use folks to clean the adoption center or to attend networking events to provide education about the organization. Volunteers are also welcome to assist with the summer shopping fair, and sponsorships are available. Krueger invites folks with vendor, sponsorship, and volunteer inquiries to contact her at flippers1@aol.com or 717-8088108. To learn more about the participating organizations, readers may visit www.fureverhome adoptioncenter.com or www.pet pantrylc.org. Pictured on front: Furever Home Adoption Center fundraising chair Tina Krueger (left) and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders hold two cats that are available for adoption. A shopping fair with more than 100 vendors will be held on July 21 to benefit both organizations.

“We’re partnering to get cats adopted,” Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders said of her organization’s collaboration with Furever Home Adoption Center. “We put the animals first, and we try to figure out the rest afterward.” Until recently, that partnership has primarily involved working to ensure that rescued or surrendered cats receive the medical care and safe homes they need. Furever Home operates a feline sanctuary and adoption center at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, while the Pet Pantry, headquartered at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, cares for cats and other animals, offers low-cost vaccinations and spay/neuter services, and supplies pet food for households
experiencing financial distress. The Pet Pantry’s veterinarians have been able to treat illnesses and injuries in cats taken in by Furever Home, and Furever Home has cared for felines accepted by the Pet Pantry that do better in a cage-free environment where they can socialize with other animals. The two organizations also share volunteers. Now, the Pet Pantry has signed on to help with hosting Furever Home’s fourth annual summer shopping fair. “This is a way for us to support (Furever Home),” Sanders said. “This shows our staff members and volunteers working together. The community needs to see organizations working together to better the lives of animals in Lancaster County.” The shopping fair will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event will be open to the public free of charge, and well-contained pets will be welcome. The Pet Pantry’s canine ambassador, Sasha, is slated to be on hand to meet with shoppers. More than 100 vendors, crafters, and local businesses have registered to participate in the event, which Furever Home
fundraising chair Tina Krueger has carefully coordinated. “I want the consumer to have a wonderful shopping experience,” Krueger said. The first 100 adults to visit the shopping fair will receive goodie bags. There will be opportunities to win prizes and to participate in a vendor passport game. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Krueger noted that with the Pet Pantry’s assistance this year, there are enough volunteers to run concessions rather than outsourcing to a food truck. A food drive to benefit both organizations will be held during the shopping fair. Folks may receive an entry into a prize drawing for each cat item they donate. The wish list includes canned kitten food, wet or dry cat food, kitten meal replacement liquid, powdered kitten formula, paper towels, and bleach. The need for supplies is great. Between the two organizations, more than 500 cats have found forever families in the past year. Currently, the Pet Pantry has more than 50 cats in foster homes and 20 felines in its adoption room. Still more are sheltered by Furever Home. Additionally, the Pet Pantry provides an average of 6,000 pounds of cat and dog food to households in need each month. Distributions are held in Gap, Collegeville, and Lancaster, as well as

learned by the end of the first week. “The second half of the second week, we will be having tech week with costumes and props,” said Huyard, who added that he has faith in the talented cast, many of whom have appeared in local theater productions. Lead roles will include Lincoln Everett as Young Simba and Gavin Haas in the role of the grown lion. Riley Fidler will play Young Nala, and Audrey Pavlica will fill the role of her older counterpart. Mufasa will be played by Ian Marcelo, and Mackenzie Neff will fill the role of Rafiki. Derrick Lambert will play Scar. Jada Corell will play the part of the meerkat Timon, and Josiah Henne will give life to the warthog Pumbaa in a full-size puppet costume. Zazu will be played by Darla Rublesky as puppeteer. Bulgrien pointed out that the camp setting, which has drawn students from three counties, is different from other Cavod productions. “We are together 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day,” said Bulgrien, who added that when the students are not involved in rehearsal she works with them on acting exercises. “We start every day with a devotional,” she noted. “Camp is my favorite thing to do at Cavod because you really get to know the students.” Noting that the show is familiar to several generations now, Huyard said that he hopes area residents will bring their children and grandchildren to a performance. “It’s such a fun show,” he said. “Everyone loves this show.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under and free for children age 4 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-3514040. A discount price is offered for tickets purchased up to two hours prior to a performance.

Theatre Camp students ages 10 to 17, Huyard will strive to present a play based on what he called “one of the most popular Disney movies of all time.” “The Lion King Jr.” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29. Amy Rau will serve as musical director, and Stephanie Morales will choreograph the show. Camp is directed by Meredith Bulgrien. According to Huyard, other challenges of staging the show are related to the authenticity of the movements and music. Because the costumes are inspired by the animals represented in the characters, the movements will also be inspired by those animals. Huyard noted that the costuming is in keeping with the music and movement. “The costumes are inspired by the animals, but they are still very human,” explained Huyard. “The lions wear traditional African clothing with a head piece that is a lion’s head worn as a headdress. We see their faces.” Huyard added that all the movements will be choreographed, noting that there will be a complexity to each scene, in addition to African dances, which Morales is specially trained to teach. “There’s a nod to the beautiful tribal dancing (done in Africa),” said Huyard. Likewise, Rau is also working with campers to learn words in the several dialects represented in the show, including Swahili. “The singers are doing harmonies in Swahili (throughout) the show,” she explained. In early June, when all the campers had registered, Huyard held an audition followed by a meet-and-greet and a readthrough of the script. “(The campers) have all their material and are working on memorization,” shared Huyard. Campers were expected to have their lines memorized by the first day of camp so that blocking and choreography could be

VisionCorps Foundation has received a $1,000 grant from the board of directors of the MAXIMUS Foundation. The funds will be used to provide free vision screenings for nearly 9,000 preschool children. Since 1994, VisionCorps’ KidSight program has provided free vision screenings for more than 100,000 preschool children. According to VisionCorps president and CEO Dennis Steiner, the screenings assist with the early detection of certain types of childhood eye problems. KidSight also offers an educational program that teaches children about eye health and safety. VisionCorps’ Youth Enrichment program, which impacts youths ages 6 to 18, provides recreational, socialization, and other daily living activities to help them achieve independence. Since being established in 1926, VisionCorps has been helping to restore autonomy and independence for southeastern Pennsylvania residents who are blind or vision impaired. It currently serves more than 2,000 individuals who are blind or vision-impaired in Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Adams and Chester counties through rehabilitation services and/or employment opportunities. For more information on VisionCorps’ services, readers may visit www.visioncorps.net or contact Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation, at 717-291-5951, ext. 4165.

noon. Students have been meeting at the school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The school district provides transportation for the up to 80 students who attend. From noon to 12:30 p.m., lunch, provided by a cooperative effort between The Factory Ministries and Grace Point Church, is served. Rich Eby, assistant to the PVSD superintendent, noted that while some students leave at noon, many stay for the character education program, which is held from 12:30 to 2 p.m. The program combines simple character lessons with a variety of activities. Students are divided into three groups according to age, and then the three groups rotate through a character lesson, an art activity, and games in the gym. Art activities included making kinetic sand, making slime, and weaving. The Factory provides a lesson plan for a character trait, such as respect, along with a book on the subject that can be read to the students. Becca Holt, community engagement coordinator with The Factory, said, “The books help to give visual representations to what may be more abstract ideas, like respect, perseverance, and courage.” During the first few weeks of Summer Enrichment, PVSD nurse Robin McCracken held a baby-sitting certification class for fifth- and sixth-grade students, including CPR and first aid. Students who take part and receive certification are invited to stay and help with the afternoon program. This year, 12 new learners signed up for the first week of camp and six students came to classes to be recertified. This summer, PVIS teacher Rob Webb, who led the charge to update the school planetarium and won a grant to make that dream a reality, held a STEM Camp for 10 boys and 10 girls. “We (accepted applicants) on a first-come, first-served (basis),” said Eby, who added that the program utilized the same transportation as the Summer Enrichment Camp, running a shuttle from Paradise Elementary to PVIS. STEM Camp was slated for July 10 to 12, and 17 to 19. Students who took part delved into learning about robots, rockets, 3-D printing, and space missions. Activities included an eggdrop challenge, robot art, rocket launching, and solar system modeling, and students attended planetarium shows on the history of space flight. According to Eby, PVSD has collaborated with The Factory for close to 10 years. More information about PVSD may be found at www.pequeavalley.org. Readers who are interested in volunteering with The Factory or would like more information about the ministry may visit www.thefactoryministries.com or call 717-687-9594.

During the 1979-1980 school year, the Manheim Central School Board gave permission for a released time religious education program to begin for fifth-graders - whose parents approved - to be released from class for one hour each week to learn about the Bible. Known then as Manheim Central Weekday Religious Education (WRE), the program has evolved through the years and officially became known as Bible2School in 2011, according to assistant director Stephanie Smith. Today, second- through fourthgrade students at elementary schools in the districts of Manheim Central, Conestoga Valley, Elizabethtown, Manheim Township, and Lancaster have the opportunity to participate in weekly Bible teaching during the school day thanks to Bible2School. Each year Bible2School hosts a celebration event for its volunteers and supporters. As the organization gears up for its 40th anniversary celebration fundraiser in March 2019, staff members would like to invite individuals who have been students in the program - in the beginning when it was referred to as WRE or in any subsequent years - to share their stories and memories so they can be included in the celebration. Details for the annual celebration will be forthcoming as organizers are still in the planning stages. “Teaching Truth and Inspiring Hope for Generations” will be the theme of the evening, and Smith said organizers are hoping to hear from as many alumni as possible so that the stories of God at work through the program can be shared with the audience. Individuals may share their stories and memories no matter how big or small - of how WRE or Bible2School played a role in their life by contacting Smith at 717-305-0987 or stephaniesmith@bible2school.com. “We’re hoping that alumni will be in touch, because we would love to incorporate their stories, whether in print, video, or sharing in person,” Smith explained, noting that organizers would love to include as many other people’s memories and stories as possible. “We’ll be honoring the last 40 years of what Bible2School has been and launching what’s next.” One Bible2School staff member who went through the program and has a child who also completed it will be sharing at the event. “It’s already touched two generations in her family,” Smith remarked. “We’re seeing some generational layers, and we would like that to continue.” Smith mentioned that some local folks still refer to Bible2School as WRE, and many of the local churches in Manheim that supported it in its early years are still involved today in working with Bible2School to provide biblical education opportunities to public school students throughout Lancaster County and beyond. A newspaper clipping from March 1979 lists the following churches
as members of the Manheim Central Christian Education Council, the group that put in the request for a released time program: Manheim Brethren in Christ, Chiques Church of the Brethren, East Fairview Church of the Brethren, White Oak Church of the Brethren, Hope Episcopal, St. Paul Episcopal, St. Paul Lutheran, Erb’s Mennonite, Erisman Mennonite, Trinity Evangelical, Jerusalem United Church of Christ (UCC), St. Paul UCC, Chiques United Methodist, Ruhl’s United Methodist, and Salem United Methodist. According to the article, the council formed as a result of a decision by the Manheim Ministerial Association to explore the possibility of offering released time religious education. To learn more about Bible2School and ways to support its mission to teach the Bible to public school children and show them their unique value in Jesus Christ, readers may visit www.bible2school.com.

PENNYSAVER - Pequea Valley Edition - July 18, 2018 - 15
Bring On The Chi Cha! The eighth annual Chiques Challenge, dubbed by regular participants as the “Chi Cha,” will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11. Hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce (SVCC), the duathlon event includes a run on part of the Northwest River Trail and through the streets of historic Marietta, followed by a kayak journey on the Susquehanna River. Competitors will begin at the Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Perry Ligon of Harrisburg is one of several competitors who have participated in the duathlon since it began. “This will be my eighth year, and I guess the real challenge for me comes from the river,” said Ligon. “I’m an ultramarathon
runner, so I consider the run the easy part. The river, however, can hold surprises.” “One year the water level was low and obstacles seemed to be everywhere from the exposed rocks that litter the river’s bottom,” continued Ligon. “Another year the river was high and flowing fast. There were just a few obstacles, they were submerged, and that may have been my fastest year in the kayak. Two years ago the humidity was oppressive, but last year’s weather was perfect from what I recall.”
Individuals may register to complete the race alone or as a team with one participant handling the running portion and the other taking on the kayaking. A team of two counts as one entry. Participants must be age 16 or older. To register, interested individuals may visit www.parivertowns.com or call 717-684-5249 by Friday, July 27. Space is limited to 150 participants, and registration may close earlier if the maximum is reached. A T-shirt is included with the entry fee, and professional split timing will be provided.
Volunteers will be stationed at the Marietta Boat Launch, Robert Mowrer Drive, Marietta, beginning at 6:30 a.m. to assist with personal kayak drop-off. All kayaks must have a valid launch permit per the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and each kayaker is required to wear a life vest equipped with a whistle. Kayak rentals are available through Shank’s Mare Outfitters or Chiques Rock Outfitters and can be delivered to the site. Participants should meet at See Chi Cha pg 16
