Cavod Campers To Stage “Mary Poppins Jr.” At Junction Center By Ann Mead Ash
Cavod Academy’s second 2019 summer musical theater camp has yet to begin, but Cordell Huyard, who will direct the camp’s production of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” is already praising the cast. “The cast is already blending well,” said Cordell, noting that the group had met for a read-through. “This is one of the strongest dance groups we have ever had in a junior show. We have a lot of triple threats in this cast,” he said, referring to performers who are proficient at singing, dancing, and acting. The cast, which is made up of Lancaster County students ages 10 to 18, will begin rehearsals at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Monday, July 29. Camp will run through Friday, Aug. 9. Performances will be held at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Mary Poppins,” a musical, is based on the book by P.L. Travers, which is the pen name adopted by Helen Lyndon Goff, a British novelist whose childhood experiences provided inspiration for the story of Mary Poppins. Travers’ books were adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The Campers participating in the Cavod Academy musical theater camp set to take place at The Junction stage musical ran on Broadway from 2006 to 2013. Center in Manheim beginning Monday, July 29, will perform the show “Mary Poppins Jr.” at The See Cavod Campers pg 5 Junction Center on Aug. 10 and 11 at 2 and 7 p.m.

out to gather the five members she needed to charter a group. Word of mouth brought her the women she needed to designate the five officers, and the group submitted paperwork to the National Blue Star Mothers in September 2018. When they learned of a Lehigh Valley group within the 30-mile marker range, they had to ask that group ’s permission to form. “(The Lehigh Valley group members) were excited for us,” said Lisa, who completed the charter over the phone with the national vice president and a former national president. “ We became the founding mothers of the Red Rose Blue Star Moms,” said Lisa, who said the red rose was chosen as it is the symbol of Lancaster County. The group currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in room 314 of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. Isreali was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Lisa found an online group called Fort Riley Mothers of Soldiers made up of women who supported each other. Some of the members of the Fort Riley group were part of National Blue Star Mothers of America Incorporated, a group of mothers who have children currently serving or who are veterans. “(National Blue Star Mothers) was founded in 1942 when someone put an ad in the newspaper calling for moms of armed service members,” explained Lisa. “When they got more than 1,000 responses, they decided to form an official group.” National Blue Star Mothers of America was chartered by Congress in 1960. Lisa learned that no Blue Star Mothers group existed in Lancaster, and she reached out to the group’s national-level representatives. Armed with the information they sent and with the help of Dawn Wardell, a friend from Calvary Church where Lisa attends, Lisa set

The chapter began taking part in efforts such as Valentines for Vets, which provided cards to area veterans through the local Veterans Affairs office. Lisa added that the chapter is involved in a similar effort that sends birthday cards to deployed service members whose birth dates are provided by their parents. On Memorial Day, the chapter held its first event at Lancaster Cemetery. Called “A Rose for Every Stone Memorial Day Tribute,” the event featured live music, speakers, and more than 1,000 roses from the Memorial Day Flower Foundation. “ We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery,” said Lisa. A number of other local groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Additionally, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25. At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. Ray D’Agostino, who is retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21 Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer. Lisa said that the Red Rose chapter has about a dozen members, but that the group is interested in growing. More information about the Red Rose Blue Star Moms may be found at www.redrosebluestarmoms.org or by searching for “Red Rose Blue Star Moms” on Facebook.

Golf Tournament from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
When Jerilyn Oehme planned the first Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of her father in 2018, she had three goals. After losing her father to suicide, Jerilyn wanted to raise funds for Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to help with that organization’s Suicide Prevention Coalition projects. She also wanted to raise awareness of and change the stigma surrounding suicide. Lastly, she hoped that her father’s male friends would come to the outing to remember her father and work to process their loss together. The tournament attracted more than 100 golfers and raised $10,000 for MHALC, and many of her father’s friends did take part
in the tournament. A photographer who took pictures of the players talked with the groups as they played and noted that Richard’s friends were sharing their memories of him. “It was helpful because men don’t always talk about feelings and emotions,” Jerilyn said. “I think it was nice for them to have this way to remember him.” The second Richard Oehme Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 1:15 p.m. The scramble format tournament will start with all groups of players teeing off simultaneously from different holes. Contests will include longest drive and closest to the pin awards for both male and female players. Other giveaways will be held
during the tournament as well. Dinner, following the tournament, is planned for 5:30 p.m. “It will be a backyard barbecue meal catered by Overlook,” said Jerilyn, who added that the hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans on the menu are foods that were favored by her father. Jerilyn recently met with Kim McDevitt, who had become executive director of MHALC just before last year’s tournament. “(McDevitt) has a lot of great ideas and initiatives,” said Jerilyn. One of those initiatives is a program that will give out free gunlocks and suicide prevention information to those who purchase firearms. “The tournament, in memory of Mr. Oehme, has not only brought to light how nondiscriminating the disease is, but has also brought awareness to the epidemic we are struggling with,” said McDevitt. “The proceeds of
the tournament have allowed us to increase suicide prevention in education and support in schools and senior centers, (and) it has also allowed us to increase efforts in our gunlock project.” Jerilyn has also been encouraged by the frank discussions of suicide she has heard in the media. “It has been cool in the past year hearing how much more (suicide) is being talked about,” she said, pointing to the book and podcast titled “Life After Suicide” by Dr. Jennifer Ashton. Jerilyn noted, “People are talking about it and talking about mental health. Not to normalize it, but to make it so it’s OK to talk when you struggle.” Jerilyn is asking those who wish to participate in the tournament to register by Saturday, Sept. 7. Individuals who would like to take part may call 717572-1653 or email jco001@lvc.edu.

deliver content in both interview and lecture-style formats. Burge noted that this year’s lineup represents the nonprofit sector, the church sector, and the business world. “I think GLS does an incredible job having a diverse lineup of speakers and content,” said Burge. “ W hat that means is that someone who wants to be challenged in the business mind will be, or if they want to be challenged in social justice, they will be. It’s a very diverse faculty and content.” Among this year’s speakers will be adventurer and survival expert Bear Grylls, known for having been a member of the British Special Forces, climbing Mount Everest, and crossing the Arctic Ocean in an inflatable raft. Grylls is also known as a supporter of the Alpha Course and for his groundbreaking television work. Danielle Strickland, pastor, author, and justice advocate, will also speak. Strickland was a member of the Salvation Army for more than 20 years and is an ambassador for Stop the Traffik. Burge noted that author Patrick Lencioni will speak about the dynamics of teams. “He is one (speaker) that (attendees) want back every year,” noted Burge. Other speakers will include pastor Craig Groeschel; entertainment marketer Bozoma Saint John; author and leader-
ship coach Jo Saxton; speaker and researcher Jason Dorsey; Aja Brown, mayor of the city of Compton, Calif.; fashion design founder and women’s advocate Liz Bohannon; social entrepreneur Dr. Krish Kandiah; author and leadership consultant Todd Henry; author, blogger, and entrepreneur Jia Jiang; former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss; and author and producer DeVon Franklin. Burge noted that joining a localized host site has networking advantages for those who attend. “In the Ephrata community, there are so many businesses and churches (attending), and there are so many people to rub shoulders with that you never thought (you might meet).” Sahd added that last year’s event drew more than 300 attendees and that this year’s registration number is quickly approaching that mark. “ We really want to be a resource to leaders in our community at any level,” he noted, adding that all types of leaders can benefit from GLS, ranging from those leading in their own homes to those who lead large organizations. “For folks who don’t know they’re leaders, but are curious, this will inspire them,” he said. “We feel it is a unique way to resource the community, and we are See LCBC pg 9

Aspen Home Improvements has been awarded the Diamond Level Atlas Pro distinction for roofing. Aspen is the only roofing company in Lancaster County to receive this award and is one of six companies in the United States to be honored. Aspen Home Improvements has been installing roofing for more than 25 years. Aspen representatives noted that the company strives to set the highest standards for its work, offering customers a choice of premium materials, such as the Atlas HP 42-inch shingle system and Scotchgard Protector for Roofing, as well as a top-of-the-line warranty. The company’s roofers are not just fully certified on all Atlas products, but they also must have installed a minimum of 100 roofs. Aspen Home Improvements was founded in Lancaster in 1992 by David and Belinda Adamson. Today, Aspen still employs many of the same employees from central Pennsylvania as when it first opened. Aspen has been expanding and now has offices that service the Eastern Seaboard from Pennsylvania to Florida. The company is headquartered on the Lititz Pike in Neffsville. Giving back to the community is a priority to Aspen, and the company will install a free roof for a local veteran later this year. For more information, readers may visit www.aspen windows.com.

Turnip the Beet was awarded to Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster. The USDA program recognized the club’s summer meal program for appetizing, appealing, and nutritious high-quality meals. Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster was one of only two Pennsylvania sites to win this coveted award. Summer meal programs are critical in the lives of millions of youths across the nation whose risk for food insecurity increases during the summer months when they no longer have access to the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs. Summer meal programs, including the SFSP and the Seamless Summer Option within the NSLP, present the opportunity to help alleviate summertime food insecurity and positively impact children’s growth and development by offering nutritious meals and encouraging children to develop healthy habits at a young age. A concern from the beginning of this invasion has been that there will be an overreaction of widespread chemical use, which itself could be a risk. Beth Finlay, area Master Gardener coordinator for Penn State Extension, explains that SLF is not difficult to kill chemically, but that the same insecticides that many homeowners might employ are lethal to butterflies, bees, and other pollinators and can find their way up the food chain to birds and other wildlife. For most residents, Penn State Master Gardeners recommend simple mechanical management in lieu of chemical management. Stomping, swatting, or hosing with a sharp water blast can kill or disable thousands of SLF without introducing toxic products. There are situations that might justify use of pesticides. If so, Penn State researchers urge residents to use only registered pesticide products and to follow the label instructions carefully. Residents may also consider hiring a licensed applicator, who will have access to Penn State Extension’s current professional guidelines. In addition, banding trees with sticky flypaper will capture hundreds of nymphs and adults, since the feeding habit of all stages is to feed, drop to the ground, and climb up tree trunks to feed again. One simple threeto-five-inch band placed about chest level is sufficient. Penn State warns that there is a risk of capturing songbirds, bats, butterflies and other desirable creatures on the sticky tapes, and it cautions that every band should have a cage of chicken wire or hardware cloth placed around the tree, outside the band, to keep wildlife off the tape. For detailed factsheets on SLF and for customized advice on how to deal with infestations, homeowners may call Penn State Master Gardener Garden Hotline at 717394-6851 or visit https://extension .psu.edu/spotted-lanternfly.

Penn State Extension researchers have reported that the hatching of spotted lanternfly eggs in Pennsylvania is mostly complete for this season, and the nymphal stages of the insect are evident in Lancaster County, as well as in counties across southeast Pennsylvania, northern Delaware and west-central New Jersey. The earliest instar of spotted lanternfly (SLF), which began appearing in late April, is about the size of a tick and is black with small white spots. Two more stages follow, identical except for slightly larger size. The fourth instar is red with black and white spots and is about a half-inch long and is just now making an appearance. These four nymphs can hop but cannot fly. They feed on tender plant tissues, gradually moving to woody plants and trees as their greater size allows them to feed through bark. By mid- to late July, the fourth instars will transform into the adult, which has wings and can feed on mature trees. The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that affects gardens and landscape plants as well as important Pennsylvania commodities. The quarantine for spotted lanternfly has expanded to include 14 counties in southeastern Pennsylvania as well as a few counties in neighboring states. It has continued to proliferate in some areas within the quarantined area. The strategy from the beginning has been to contain the invasion while Penn State scientists and other researchers around the world work to unravel the biology of this insect. The goal is to find safe and effective controls both for commercial growers and for homeowners. Recently, researchers have discovered two fungal pathogens that attack and kill spotted lanternfly. More research is ongoing to further evaluate if this can be utilized to reduce populations of spotted lanternfly.
