About 80 Pequea Valley School District students took part in the Braves Summer Camp.
PV Students Enjoy Braves Summer Camp uring the summer of 2020, Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy, held an outside learning and enrichment program for a limited number of students at the Braves Learning Center, which is located, along with The Factory Ministries, in the Together Community Center in Paradise. This year, Neff was able to hold Braves Summer Camp in the learning center, an area comprised of staff offices and a brightly decorated classroom, which opened last spring. “Coming back off COVID restrictions and having the new center at the same time, this is a huge gift,” said Neff. Each week that the free camp was held, Neff and a volunteer helper, along with an invited expert in a particular field, worked with about 12 children, for a total

Neff customizes activities according to the age and academic level of the student. For instance, a community journal page done by a kindergartner may include a drawing while an older student would be asked to write several sentences. “We take the activity and engage it to the age,” said Neff, who talks to parents about each child’s strengths and weaknesses and reccomends that the student sign up to attend during the week that offers the best fit. She also reaches out to teachers to help develop a program for each child. “So if a child is specifically struggling in math, I can get math sheets from their grade,” she said. “If we see a child needs help, I work with (the) students one-on-one separate from the camps.” More information about The Factory may be found at https://thefactoryministries.com or by searching for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is a well-known saying. It is a concept that organizers of the annual Woodcrest 3D Archery Shoot have found to work well. “We pretty much do the same thing over and over, and the guys still keep coming,” said Jason Martin, operations director for Woodcrest Retreat, a camp and conference center located at 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata.

Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright spots,” added Rutt. “There was resilience, and a lot of our clients have grown.” Rutt went on to tell the story of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in 2014, all his property reverted back to his family, as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE International savings group called Mutual Support. Marie joined the group and grew both spiritually and in her business sense. “She was making about 50 cents a day working in fields and gardens,” said Rutt, who noted that Marie

Eventually Marie began keeping goats, and she purchased rental properties. When Marie learned that members of her deceased husband’s family were in financial trouble, she forgave them and helped them financially. “She got them connected to their own savings groups,” said Rutt. “It’s a really cool cycle because she used her talents and skills, and she is now able to help others in the community,” he added. “(Marie

Each Monday, a group of gentlemen gathers at the east end of the New Holland Community Memorial Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street. They are members of the Lancaster County Horseshoe League, a group that has been meeting in the park to play for more than three decades. Don Troupe, former New Holland chief of police, is among their number. “ We come down here to have fun,” said Troupe, who has kept careful track of the development of the league since prior to its inception in 1985. Although the first meeting, attended by Paul Caudill Sr., Vernon Shenk, Jim Lafferty, and Harold Becker, was held in February 1985, Troupe said that the group dates back to 1981, when Lafferty first organized a horseshoe throwing contest for the New Holland Farmers Day Fair. In April 1985, Lafferty and Becker met with Warren Peachy at the park with a plan requesting that five courts be established in the area where the swimming pool had been located. The Farmers Day

Association helped to cover the cost, and by the summer of 1985, the courts were installed and ready for a Farmers Day Fair team tournament on the first Saturday in October. In 1986, several nonsanctioned tournaments were held at the site, with the first National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) tournament held in August of 1986. By the summer of 1988, the organization was holding league pitching on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It was decided that more courts were needed to accommodate the club members, and in December, construction began, with four additional courts completed in May of 1989. Because many planing mill employees pitched during lunch, the club approached mill president Jay Weber for assistance. “We went to him and asked him if he would finance the construction of (the four courts),” said Troupe. “We went back after (the courts) were done and asked how we would pay off the loan, and he said it was a donation,” he recalled. The courts were all installed to NHPA specifications and authorization, so that NHPA competitions among that national group’s members could be held there. “There are national, state, and even world tournaments,” said Troupe, who added that Lancaster falls in the Eastern region of the Pennsylvania division. “Almost every weekend all summer, there is a sanctioned tournament somewhere in Pennsylvania,” noted Troupe. Troupe explained that the

distance between horseshoe pins is 40 feet for men, but women and anyone over age 65 may pitch from a 30-foot line. The area around the pin is filled with a special clay that comes from the Narvon clay mine. During weekly league play, pitchers will draw for partners or divide into teams depending on how many are present. Along with Troupe, current members include Norman
Jenkins, Ralph Nelson, and Tom Decker, a member of the NHPA Hall of Fame board. A few members travel from Chester County each week to take part. Weather-permitting, the pitchers are in the park each Monday morning at 9:30 a.m., and they welcome those interested in joining them. in outdoor sporting equipment will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. It is necessary to raise approximately $85,000 yearly to cover the camp budget. Proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournament in hopes of reaching that goal. Last year, more than 140 shooters took part in the event, and 21 sponsors joined in to help the cause. Target sponsorships are available for this year’s shoot. Individuals interested in sponsoring may call 717-738-2233. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. Martin reported that in 2021 more than 1,800 youngsters will attend camp at Woodcrest, representing an increase of 400 youngsters more than the previous attendance record. Those who wish to take part in the 3D Archery Shoot are encouraged to register by Friday, Aug. 20, by calling the camp or visiting www.WoodcrestRetreat.org.

Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC) has invited the community to its Great Giveaway nearly every summer for about 20 years now. For a long time, the event was organized by church member Joyce Lacock, but when she retired from running it a few years ago, church staff took over the event. The giveaway was successful, attracting hundreds of attendees who formed lines that extended well into the church parking lot. Then came 2020, and COVID-19 restrictions made it impossible to hold the event. “I am so glad it’s back this year,” said Chris Lenhart, lead pastor at CMBC. This year’s giveaway, which will feature free clothing, household items, books, and more, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise. The church is located at the corner where Mine and South Kinzer roads meet. Lenhart said that organizers began planning the event early this year, and that new or gently used items would start coming into the church in late July. Edie Weaver, one of the organizers oversees the process of accepting donations. “Edie wants it to be an item someone can use,” said Lenhart. “So she is pretty particular about what we will take.” Donations are sorted by volunteers the week before the giveaway. Items that will be available for free will include clothing and shoes, sorted by size and gender; toys; books; and a variety of household items. Items that are left that can be repurposed will go to neighborhood ministries and community closets. After 11 a.m., hot dogs and beverages will be given away while supplies last. See CMBC pg 8

“We want to take our faith out beyond the walls of the church,” said Sally Englerth, one of the volunteers from Freedom Life Church who participated in a day of community service locally as part of the nationwide observance of Serve Day on July 10. According to www.serve day.com, the day provides churches across the world with opportunities to serve their local communities and share the love of God through practical acts of kindness. It is based on Mark 10:45, which reads, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Volunteer Larry Fuller affirmed, “We want to serve the Lord and serve the community.” Freedom Life currently has two locations, the main campus
in Christiana and another campus in Centre County. Volunteers from both campuses took part in the projects. In Chester County, volunteers partnered with Good Works to assist with an ongoing construction project in Coatesville. Lancaster County volunteers took part in a cleanup at Muddy Run Park, where they cleared See Serve Day pg 10

speak. Hess explained that each was invited because of his or her contributions to Mennonite communities. “Each brings rich life experiences,” she noted. “They have pursued very different professional work, but a common thread is caring for people and meeting their needs.” In addition to his work for MCC, Cruz has had a varied career, which includes being an associate pastor. His work in the financial services field has most recently led him to working as a consultant for a Lancaster organization that is opening a new credit union focused on underserved persons such as recent immigrants. Smucker earned her degree in education from Eastern Mennonite University before teaching English and German at Lancaster Mennonite High
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God’s love and compassions for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC envisions communities worldwide in right relationship with God, one another and creation. Visa and MasterCard will be accepted. No out-of-state checks.

Jean Kilheffer Hess, executive director of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), could not help but share a “fun fact” when asked about the organization’s upcoming annual Storytelling Night. “No one knows what the storytellers will say ahead of time,” divulged Hess, who explained that neither the planners of the event nor the storytellers discuss story topics. “Interweaving of stories happens spontaneously,” noted Hess, adding, “Invariably it comes together in a beautiful way.” Storytelling Night, which was first suggested by an LMHS volunteer about 10 years ago, will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, at Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster,
at 7 p.m. Hess said the format is simple, but carefully prescribed. “The storytellers alternate and each tells a series of four-minute stories,” she explained, adding that the event has proven popular for LMHS. The free presentation will also be livestreamed at www.bit.ly/AMN21. LMHS welcomes donations to support the event’s mission to preserve history through storytelling. According to Hess, the goal of the evening is to provide an engaging way to learn about both everyday and exceptional experiences of local Anabaptists. This year, Jesus Cruz, who has served as national program director of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and Myrna Smucker, former Lancaster Mennonite School teacher and author of “The Bird-inHand Story,” were chosen to
trails by cutting branches, moving rocks and pulling weeds and picked up trash on the site’s disc golf course and campground. Centre County campus volunteers worked in Unionville Park painting the gazebo and pavilion and pulling weeds. Main campus volunteers worked at Octorara JuniorSenior High School in Atglen, where they cleaned up the school’s greenhouse. Volunteers also reorganized a storage space in the school. “We did weeding around the greenhouse, and (other volunteers) painted the dugout,” said Fuller, explaining that the school provided the church with a list of jobs that needed to be completed. The greenhouse at the school, which is maintained by the Octorara FFA, includes raised bed gardens where various vegetables and fruits are grown and donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. At Freedom Life’s main campus, 447 Noble Road, Christiana, services are held on Sundays at 9 and 11 a.m. The Centre County campus meets on Sundays at 10 a.m. at 113 Sunset Acres, Bellefonte. An online campus offers livestreamed services on Sundays at 9 and 11 a.m. on YouTube, on Facebook and at https://online.freedom.life. Many of the senior dogs that arrive at the facility are retired breeder dogs from commercial breeding operations; others are those surrendered from previous owners due varied circumstances.
