INFORMATIVE FILM

As Awana embarks on its 35th year at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, Heather Ensslen, who directs Awana with her husband, Michael, asked pastor emeritus Bob Reid for memories of the program’s beginnings at the church. “Awana began at CMBC by faith,” recalled Reid. “We had no program like this in the area. I had heard of … how effective (Awana) was at Moody Church in Chicago.” Reid remembered that a group prayed and trained, and the Lord provided a pastor to be the first commander. “From that time on … God has continued to raise up adult leaders who love the Lord, love children, and are willing to invest in lives for the next generation,” noted Reid. The CMBC annual Awana kickoff will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, from See Awana pg 7

Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance. While the Quarryville Fairgrounds will be the home of the 2018 Gap Relief Auction, the event’s name still pays homage to the location of the place where it started: at Sam Summers’ farm in Gap in 1948. Set for Friday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 11, the annual auction to benefit the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will be held in the Kreider Building at the Solanco Fairgrounds, located at 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville. “It’s the longest continuing auction benefiting MCC. There are 40-some auctions across the United States and Canada,” said Ken Sensenig, assistant executive director of MCC East Coast. “It’s a way people in their home communities and right here in southern Lancaster County can literally reach out and touch the world. MCC works in 56 countries around the world.” The event will begin with a roast pork dinner to eat in or take out from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 10. This will also be an opportunity

to preview auction items, including quilts, that will be sold on Aug. 11. A blood drive will be held on-site on Aug. 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. Those who donate will receive a certificate for a free ice cream cone from the ice cream stand and a T-shirt. To schedule an appontment, readers may call 800-771-0059 or visit www.717giveblood.org. There will be a special singing performance by young people of the Weaverland Mennonite Conference from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 10, followed by MCC speaker Tom Wenger. His topic will focus on the need for material resources for southern Russia and Ukraine. Proceeds from the Friday night offering will benefit the cause. “There’s been social unrest and war in Ukraine,” Sensenig explained. “(Wenger) has been in Ukraine recently and will be drawing from that experience.” An auction of smaller items will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 10. On Aug. 11, the auction will move into full speed. Bidders

may come early for a country breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs starting at 6 a.m. to prepare for the start of the auction at 8:30 a.m. Household items, crafts and more will start on Block 1 at 8:30 a.m., while farm items, hardware and tools will begin on Block 2 at 8:45 a.m., followed by an auction of shrubbery and lawn furniture. A children’s auction will start at 10 a.m. Large furniture will be featured at 11 a.m., followed by special items at noon. Special items this year will include a new spring wagon and playground equipment. At 12:30 p.m., there will be an auction of sheds, gazebos and more, followed by the quilt auction at 1 p.m. One unique item to be included in this year’s auction is a cedar chest with a bench top that features a scene of the first Gap Relief Auction from 1948 painted by Daniel Esh. The chest was created for the auction’s 50th anniversary year and was purchased by a member of the Summers family at that time. It returned to be sold again about

nine years ago to a purchaser from North Carolina, and now it has returned again to the sale this year. Proceeds from the auction are important to the fundraising of the Mennonite Central Committee, which provides relief, developing and peacemaking work in the United States and around the world. Donations of new or slightly used items are being accepted for the auction. For more information or to donate, readers may contact Levi Fisher at 717-5296187 or Ammon Stoltzfoos at 717-786-0880. More information about the event is available at www.mcc.org/get-involved/ events/gap-relief-sale. Pictured on front: Ken Sensenig, assistant executive director of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) East Coast, displays one of the quilts that will be available at the Gap Relief Auction on Aug. 10 and 11 at the Solanco Fairgrounds. Proceeds will benefit MCC.

Banquet from pg 1 and a live band will play Christian Spanish music. Guest speaker for the evening will be Christian psychiatrist and bishop Dr. Enos Daniel Martin of Elizabethtown, who will speak on the connection between mental health and prayer. Martin was a member of the faculty at Penn State Hershey for 20 years. He also spent two decades working in prison psychiatry. Martin is currently the medical director of the Naaman Center, a Christianbased alcohol and drug rehabilitation and treatment center. On the topic of prayer and mental health, Martin has said, “Through all of my journey, I’ve become more and more impressed with what God can do through His humble servants who seek His face in prayer and less impressed with what I can accomplish through my training and degrees.” Drew made it clear that choosing Martin was born of a concern for children everywhere. “We invite people to come and learn

th

how to help and how to get help for children,” he said. “Our vision is not just to help children far away. We want to help children and their families where they are (because) we want children thriving in their families.” Drew added that We Help Children is available to help families in need who contact the organization. “God has also given us a vision to do more in the poor communities,” said Drew. We Help Children is currently working to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The organization is preparing to start two centers in Guatemala and one in Honduras. The center in Chicago is manned by Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala. “She came to us to … learn how to work with children in crisis, and she is a gifted counselor,” explained Drew. Jakus joined the ministry,

59 Anniversary August 6-11, 2018

answering a call to work with children in crisis through a local church in Chicago. In addition, the Metcalfs often take orphaned children who need extra help into their home and work with children who are aging out of the orphanage to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work and they graduate from us to more independence,” said Drew. Cindy noted that nearly half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. There is no cost to attend the banquet, but seating is limited to 200 on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are necessary to attend. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to attend may register by calling 717-517-2359 or emailing HelpChildrenWithUs@yahoo.com. Registration must be completed by Saturday, Sept. 8. More information about the organization may be found by visiting www.wehelpchildren.org.

health,” said Drew. Now, as their ministry expands - with locations in Honduras and inner-city Chicago in addition to Guatemala - Cindy says the focus is changing. “We are switching from the Metcalfs in Guatemala to We Help Children as an organization,” explained Cindy. “It’s not about us, but about lots of layers of ministry. We hope it multiplies to lots of countries even if we are not there.” With a goal of helping children in crisis wherever they are, We Help Children will hold its first Banquet With a Fiesta Flair on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, 3716 E. Newport Road, Gordonville. The menu will feature stations sponsored by local restaurants that specialize in Spanish-style dishes, as well as a possible nachos bar. Video testimonies from young people whose lives have been changed by what God is doing in Guatemala will be on the agenda,

Awana from pg 1 will include hot dogs, chips, carrots with ranch dressing, applesauce, a choice of two beverages, and a dessert. The purpose of CMBC’s Awana ministry is to help children know, love, and serve Christ. “Each Awana night is filled with energy, fellowship, and spiritual growth,” said Heather. “The evening is packed with games, Scripture memory, singing, and a Bible message.” According to Heather, each meeting includes four sections, beginning with an opening ceremony for all students. The opening includes prayer, singing, club pledges, and announcements. Following the opening, classes, which are divided by age, meet in large groups for Bible lessons, including introduction and explanation of Scripture as contained in the handbooks. Club members also meet in small groups of up to eight members with two leaders for further discussion of the night’s Bible story. “During this time, the clubbers

sending them money,” he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other.” To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links. “We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course,” said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business,” she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. Bilindabagabo noted that much of the $350,000 HOPE would like to raise from the tournament will be donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses.

Lorraine Murungu works at the sewing machine she bought with a loan from a group funded by HOPE International. HOPE founder Jeff Rutt likes to tell Murungu’s story and encourage others to learn from it. Packages start with two golfers and recognition during the awards meal and range to include a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic and golfing and a meal for 12 participants. Readers who would like to take part in the tournament may visit www.hopeinternational.org/pagolf.

Jeff Rutt (left), founder and chairman of the board of HOPE International, and Kaitlyn Russell, events intern, jump for joy as another golf ball is placed in the thermometor that is symbolic of the funds raised by sponsorship of the organization’s 18th golf tournament, which will be held on Sept. 14 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The organization is hoping to raise $350,000 from this year’s event.

But as he watched Murungu and other women who have benefited from HOPE as they worshipped God, he found himself learning from them. “I heard them talk, praying for each other and supporting each other,” said Rutt, who was struck by the humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me so much depth of character and integrity,” said Rutt. HOPE International is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 14. Round one of the four-person scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner. According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or shoot a hole-in-one. Through working with her savings group, called “Kuwirirana,” which loosely translates to “getting along,” Murungu was able to purchase a sewing machine she can use to make rag dolls. Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt asks those who hear about her life to learn from Murungu. “I want to encourage us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by

The Library System was awarded a grant from Music for Everyone Foundation in the amount of $1,216 to support the acquisition of percussion instruments to enhance library programs. The musical instrument collection is available to all public youth librarians, Be Ready Rover program coordinator, and the Bookmobile staff. Libraries will host “Together We Are Music” events and other music-oriented programming for youths and families during the summer and in the future. Library programs and library outreach supports children’s learning and creative needs in giving them access to materials, like instruments, and opportunities. Using their imagination, children will learn about tempo and volume, creatively express themselves, and perform in a nonjudgmental atmosphere. The Music for Everyone Foundation is committed to supporting music as a positive impact in the community by awarding grants to schools and community groups to support music programs. Two years ago, Cedar Grove Church, 4833 Division Highway, East Earl, changed the name of a fundraiser that had been held for nearly two decades from the Cedar Grove Peach Festival to the Cedar Grove Church Peach Fest and Family Fun Day. The 2018 event, which will include peach-flavored foods and baked goods, a flea market, a book sale, a silent auction, and children’s games, will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The church has installed a hitching post in the parking lot for the use of members of the Plain community who wish to attend. Children’s games, which were introduced at the 2016 fest, will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon. In the past, children’s games and activities have included face painting, sack races, an egg carry race, a tag team race, a hula hoop contest, a water balloon toss, and a peanut scramble. Each child who participates in the games will receive a free serving of ice cream. Many of the foods available for purchase at the event are traditionally prepared with a special focus on peaches, and this year will be no exception. Breakfast items will include pancakes with or without peach topping and whipped cream, along with sausage and egg casserole, and lunch will feature hamburgers and cheeseburgers, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, and ice

cream with peaches. A baked goods table will feature homemade peach pies, as well as sour cherry pies, black raspberry pies, black-bottom cupcakes, cakes, brownies, cookies, multiple flavors of whoopie pies, and a variety of other treats. According to event organizer Betty Ferstler, donations of books for this year’s book sale have been plentiful. “We have a large (number) of donated books that were well taken care of,” she said, noting that children’s books, novels, summer reading, and cookbooks will be on display. In addition, the church has collected yard sale items that can be purchased by donation from a special table. Another table will be designated for donated costume jewelry to be sold by the church. Organizer Barb Zook said that inside flea market vendors will include two jewelry makers, one selling silver jewelry, a vendor selling brand-name personal care products, and representatives of the Carol Stark Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping area teenagers, selling wreaths and plants. According to Zook, several outside flea market spaces will be available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis that morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. According to organizer Barb MacMaster, this year’s silent auction will have at least 20 items on display, including an adult bike, a bike helmet, theme baskets, and gift certificates to

local businesses. MacMaster noted that some funds raised by the silent auction will be designated for a special purpose this year. “There will be a few items in the silent auction (that) the proceeds will (be earmarked for) the church’s Caring Fund, which is overseen by the deacon’s ministry,” explained MacMaster. Funds raised by the event will be used for the church’s general fund. In the past, 20 percent of those funds have been designated for special purposes. This year, 10 percent of the money raised will be donated to Hands Across the Street, an outreach of Columbia Presbyterian Church, and another 10 percent will be designated

for another mission project. The church is located at the intersection of routes 322 and 897. Readers who would like more information about the event may visit www.cedar grovepresbyterianlanc.org or call 717-354-5573. Pictured on front: Members

of the Cedar Grove Church Peach Fest and Family Fun Day committee are preparing for the 19th annual event on Aug. 18. A variety of peach-flavored foods will be featured along with children’s games, a flea market, a silent auction, a book sale, and more.

A group of more than 20 juniors from Lancaster’s McCaskey East High School health and science program recently took part in an exclusive opportunity to tour Penn State Hershey Medical Center and learn from working physicians and health care professionals. The tour was made possible by Penn State Children’s Hospital and the American Heart Association. Students were welcomed by Dr. Leslie Walker Harding, chair of pediatrics at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Dr. Thomas Chin, chief of pediatric cardiology at Penn State Children’s Hospital. The students then toured the simulation area, research lab and 3-D printing lab, where they took part in hands-on experiences using a CPR simulation and 3-D heart models. A cardiologist, researcher, physician assistant and sonographer also spoke with the students about their career paths during a lunch panel discussion. Echo sonographer Tammy Maguire provided a live demonstration of the procedure. Students concluded the day with a tour of a basic science lab. The career shadowing day is part of Penn State Children’s Hospital’s youth health sponsorship with the American Heart Association. A McCaskey East High School student practiced CPR. Through the sponsorship, nearly 85,000 students at schools that participate in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart programs throughout Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties received exclusive health education resources from physicians and health experts at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Students at participating schools also had an opportunity to participate in an essay and art contest, learn hands-only CPR thanks to the donation of the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime kits, and receive fun booklets and activities to encourage healthful eating. For more information on the American Heart Association’s children-focused programs and resources, readers may visit www.heart.org/kids.

The 2017 All Pontiac Show hosted by the Susquehanna Valley GTO (SVGTO) drew 187 vehicles. “We typically get guests from eight to 10 states, SVGTO president Vic Schreck said. “Many will trailer their cars. We’ll secure an area hotel with an event discount for those who wish to stay overnight. Last year’s show was the 10th hosted by the SVGTO. In June this year, the club used its expertise to host the 39th annual GTO Association of America (GTOAA) International Convention in Valley Forge. More than 300 Pontiacs from the United States and Canada were entered in the event. A total of 414 people registered for the convention, which was the largest since 2004, when it was held in Pontiac, Mich. “The longest distance driven was a guy in his 1965 Le Mans who drove it 2,500 miles from Spokane, Wash., and then drove it back, marveled Schreck, who was recently installed as the GTOAA national president. The GTOAA has about 4,000 members from the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. The SVGTO hopes to draw another big crowd for the 11th annual All Pontiac Show, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18,

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1670 Nissley Road, Landisville. Registration will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. A registration fee will be charged for exhibited vehicles, with a discount for those entered by Saturday, Aug. 11. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. All Pontiac vehicles, not just GTOs, are welcome at the show. Every entry will be photographed, and registrants will receive framed copies. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. “Each year our awards are changed out to keep things fresh, Schreck noted. The show will again be accompanied by a model car contest for children and adults. Show registrants may enter the model car contest at no cost, but other competitors may enter for a donation. Model cars will be limited to plastic assembly; diecast models will not be permitted. Families are welcome to attend the show. Children and women will be especially invited to cast votes for their favorite entries. A disc jockey will broadcast music from the 1960s through the early 1970s, with some older music thrown in for good measure. A caterer will sell breakfast and lunch foods, as well as ice cream, french fries, and beverages.

The Lancaster County Academy (LCA) recently received a $500 mini-grant from the Lancaster County School Counselors Association to be used to help motivate high school students who are at risk for not graduating. The recipient of the grant school counselor and service learning coordinator Deborah Schmidt saw that many of her students had poor time management skills and lacked the necessary motivation to complete graduation requirements. To address this need, Schmidt compiled a series of four lesson plans centered around goal setting. Lessons included creation of a vision board depicting students’ future lives, understanding how to write and implement effective goals, how to devise a monthly goal planning calendar, the importance of finding an accountability partner, how to overcome obstacles, and designing a chart to keep track of their progress. Students at the LCA participated in all goal setting lessons and were asked to come up with both a personal and school goal. Students were also told that if they completed at least one high school course during a three-month period and had good school attendance, that they would be invited on a field

For 2018, the committee that organizes Summer Fest - a barbecue competition held in New Holland Memorial Community Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street decided to offer visitors a larger selection of food for purchase. “People complained that (the barbecue) smells good but they can’t try anything,” said committee member Bryant Glick. “We have 10 food truck vendors coming, and we will have a lot more food variety (available),” said Glick. Having more food items for sale will not be the only change attendees will experience when they visit this year’s Summer Fest, which will be held in the park on Friday, Aug. 24, from noon until 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pork loin has been added to the several types of barbecue that are judged by members of the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS), and the inaugural Bell and Evans First Responder Wing Throw Down will be held. According to Glick, the first responder units will compete by making wings in two categories. A People’s Choice competition will be open to the public. “People will pay $1 per wing to sample wings from as many teams as they want, and they can vote for their favorite,” explained Glick. “Whichever team has the most votes will win a grill worth $1,000.” In the second category, KCBS judges will vote, and the winning team will receive $500. There is no fee for first responder teams to take part in the contest, which is being overseen by J. Clair Witwer. The wing competition will be held on Aug. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. Those who prefer other food items to wings may visit the food vendors selling items ranging from barbecue to ice cream. Glick listed french fries, tacos, Caribbean cuisine, and grilled cheese among the many foods that will be available for purchase. In addition, a local

barbecue supply business will have samples of grilled pork loin available throughout the event for attendees to try. Committee member Bill Weidner noted that visitors should know that many of the vendors selling barbecue also have teams taking part in the competition. In addition, Garden Spot High School FFA will sell chicken barbecue at the event with the goal of raising funds to attend a national conference. The Summer Fest competition, which is sanctioned by the KCBS, will include more than 70 barbecue teams from as far away as Ohio and Virginia. Teams will arrive by Friday morning, and on Friday night, they will begin to scent the air of New Holland with the smells of barbecued sausage, chicken, pork ribs, pork, beef brisket, chef’s choice, whole hog, and pork loin to compete in Summer Fest’s designated categories. Prizes will be awarded in several categories and will include the New Holland Championship, as well as the Pennsylvania State Barbecue Championship, which will go to the Pennsylvania team that has amassed the most points in at least three state contests. According to Glick, the team of Lo’-N-Slo’ BBQ of New Providence retained its title at the 2017 event. The overall winner of the New Holland event will receive a $2,500 cash prize and be eligible to compete in the American Royal Cook-Off in Kansas City, Mo., in October.
