“Our real focus this week is the weather,” said Jim Ackerman, director of the 50-member Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band during the group’s band camp, which was held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from July 30 through Aug. 2. “We’re trying to beat
the rain and do as much as we can in the time that we have.” By Wednesday, the skies had proved favorable to Ackerman and company. On Thursday, things grew a bit more damp. Still, the group made progress toward mastering the 2018 drill, which is based on the music from the “Shrek” movies. Ackerman chose “I’m a Believer,” a tune
originally written by Neil Diamond and made famous by The Monkees; “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc.; “All Star” by Smash Mouth; and “Accidentally in Love” by Counting Crows for the nine-minute show. “We had been doing rock ‘n’ roll and movie (themes),” said Ackerman of choosing “Shrek.” “Nothing was connected, so
it made sense to do a variety of music with a central theme.” It did not hurt that the theme appealed to students who are familiar with the character and the movies about the curmudgeonly ogre. Alto saxophone player and middle brass co-section leader Brenna Perring noted the change. “(The music) is a lot different than in past years,” she said, See PVHS Marching Band pg 10

Runners who take part in the Hands-on House Half Marathon will traverse a scenic portion of the Lancaster County countryside on Sept. 29. The event will also offer 10K and 5K routes and will raise funds for educational programming at the children’s museum. By Ann Mead Ash
Julia Connolly, executive director of Hands-on House, has great appreciation for the beauty of the challenging course that Hands-on House Half Marathon runners enjoy. While the half marathon
is known for its challenging hills, Connolly delights in the bucolic scenery the run offers. “It’s a beautiful course with farms, trees, and a covered bridge,” she said. “It truly captures Lancaster’s character.” The 15th annual Hands-on House Half Marathon, which also offers 10K See Hands-on House pg 11
The annual Woodcrest Retreat Benefit 3-D Archery Shoot has continued to grow in the nearly 10 years it has been held. According to organizer Phil Snader, the 2017 event attracted 160 shooters for the morning event and 44 shooters for the bonus afternoon round. “ We fed (brunch to) 180 people last year,” noted Snader. “Our numbers have continued to increase.” The 2018 shoot will be held at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 7 a.m. until noon. A bonus shoot will be held from noon to 3 p.m. There See Archery Shoot pg 8

Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. However, Panzini could not find something that quite fit her needs. “I got together with some other mothers of children with special needs, and we decided to create our own (program),” said Panzini. The resulting program currently serves six individuals. “Our participants came from word of mouth,” Panzini explained. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual
disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “ We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.,” explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through mid-August. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment full-day program,” she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground

running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up” job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang,” said Panzini. “We baked for four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and gluten-free treats, and the next day the campers set up a table in the lobby.” “That was a very successful day,” said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building),” Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that aspect,” Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office work or cleaning, we can help,” she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big part of

In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and Rittenhouse have planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables),” said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in special-needs classes and camps since she was 8,” said Panzini. “ We have a lot of teachers advising us.” Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. doing that,” musical organizer and master of ceremonies Dave Armstrong said. The main stage at the Fiddlers’ Picnic will open at 10 a.m. with young performers from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, Del. Other performing groups that have already indicated they plan to attend include returning favorite the Orpheus Supertones, a group that is well-known in old-time music and has performed internationally. Progressive bluegrass band Acoustic Turnpike is scheduled to play, as well as traditional bluegrass band Short Notise. Another bluegrass group on the schedule, J-Tyme, is composed of members of the Horst family. “It’s a nice up-andcoming family playing bluegrass,” Armstrong noted. A somewhat different sound will be provided by autoharp artist David Kilby of Oxford. “He played for me early on in the second year (of the event), and I was pretty much blown away by his talent,” Armstrong said, adding, “I’m hoping to have a gospel singer at the end who has a good repertoire of music and has written songs.” The work of organizing the event is a team effort between Armstrong, event organizer Jim Groff and West Sadsbury Township.
“I always wanted to have something like this happen in Christiana,” Groff said. “When (former West Sadsbury Township supervisor) Jim Landis had approached me about using their park, I didn’t know anything about the park. We walked almost the whole property and I thought, ‘This is perfect for what I want to do.’” While the main stage will be the center of activities, there will be many opportunities to venture into the woods for impromptu jam sessions. Those who would like to perform for the larger audience may sign up for stage time as it is available. All bluegrass, old-time and country styles are welcome in the all-acoustic format. “I’ll have plenty of spots open for stage time,” Armstrong said. “I’d like to encourage (everyone) - especially the young people - to come out and play music.” In addition to the music, there will be a free hayride around the grounds, a violin vendor and lots of food. Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church members are scheduled to return this year with their popular fish fry. “We try to keep it a community affair. All of the food vendors are local nonprofits,” West Sadsbury Township supervisor Barry Edwards said. “The park is almost a hidden gem; people don’t know what’s back there.

A group of volunteers recently raised $57,000 for Off the Streets. Volunteers for Off the Streets work to help neighbors in Lancaster communities move out of temporary living arrangements, such as hotels and shelters, and into permanent housing. At an April luncheon at Lancaster Country Club called Our Thing in Spring, the committee garnered sponsorships, cash donations, in-kind gifts and auction items to raise the funds. Proceeds will go directly to helping men, women and children pay their security deposit and first month’s rent so they may move into homes. Since 2013, Off the Streets has helped more than 1,500 people, 80 percent of whom are women and children. The organization works through the United Way to

As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “ We need to raise $100,000 each year to cover our camp budget,” explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Woodcrest, which is located on
a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. More than 1,400 youngsters attended camp at Woodcrest this year. Organizers noted that any style of bow may be used on the course and that families are encouraged to take part in the event together. “I have been impressed by how many people brought their sons and daughters,” noted Martin. Those who wish to take part in the hunt are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 20, by calling 717-738-2233 or visiting www.WoodcrestRetreat.org/Events /Benefit-3D-Archery-Shoot.

PVHS Marching Band from pg 1 adding that it feels more modern even though some of the songs date back several decades. “Because ‘Shrek’ is not that old,” she explained. During the drill feature, twirler Emilie Thibeault will work with two batons, three batons, and two knives. The sixmember color guard will move back and forth between rifles and flags, and they will wear dresses that are reminiscent of Princess Fiona’s from the film. According to Ackerman, the drill will be fast-paced and interesting to watch. “We will move a lot and keep it exciting,” he said, adding that the band will create a heart

on the field during “Accidentally in Love.” Band camp can be an intense experience because there is a lot to learn in a short period of time, but low brass section leader and trombone player Jon Bolton said that the repetition that is employed helps students to master the drill. “(We) do it until (we) get it right,” he said. “We hammer it down.” Perring agreed. “We keep at it until we’re done so we can have a good season,” she said. “Once you get to know it and it comes easy, it’s a different atmosphere.” To lighten the mood, student leaders organize fun evening activities during band camp such as miniature golf, outdoor movies, and potluck events. Alexa Cacciola, who shares section leader duties with Perring, noted that band camp is a time when the band learns to march
in step - both literally and figuratively. “It’s a learning time, but it’s about the bonding too,” she stated. “The band gets to know each other. We put the cliques aside and become a (team).” The theme for the 2018 drill has also given Ackerman a number of Shrek-isms to utilize as he makes announcements and gives commands to band members over the stadium loudspeaker. “You guys are looking Shrek-tacular,” he quipped as the students lined up for the first segment of the drill. “You have been ogreachievers - learning all the drill moves in three days,” he added. on the second-to-last day of camp. Ackerman’s assistant director is Rob Corrao. Jen Bilby is color guard coordinator, and Ryan Kriebel from the Red Lion Area School District serves as guest clinician.

Those wishing to participate in the 5K or 10K races may register ahead of time or on the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hands-on House and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race. Free long-sleeved tech shirts are guaranteed for runners who preregister for the events. While the Hands-on House race courses spotlight the hallmarks of Lancaster County scenery, the event also offer a unique opportunity for children and non-runners to enjoy the museum during the race. “The museum will open at 8 a.m., and runners receive coupons for children,” said Connolly, who explained that children may enjoy the museum for free with a paying adult. The coupons give a spouse, grandparent, or family friend a chance to enjoy the museum with a child or children while one or both parents run the course. Funds raised by the races will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located across the street from its present location. In February of 2000, the museum moved to 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and just about doubled its floor space. Hands-on House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Readers who would like to learn more about Hands-on House may visit www.handsonhouse.org.

and 5K courses, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 8 a.m. All three runs will begin and end at Hands-on House, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The 10K utilizes part of the halfmarathon course, and the 5K winds through a local neighborhood. Strollers are permitted in the 5 and 10K runs, but pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Connolly noted that water stops and comfort stations will be available along the routes and that bagels and apples will be offered to runners at the end of the race. Each run will have its own start, and all runners will be chip-timed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female half-marathon runners, and all half-marathoners will receive medals. Prizes will also be given to the top three males and females in a number of age groups for the half marathon and to the top five males and females for the 5K and 10K courses. According to Connolly, race organizers have set a goal of attracting 800 to 1,000 participants this year. At its peak, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. Registration opened earlier this year to give more runners a chance to sign up. Runners may register at www.handsonhouse.org/run/ or by searching for “Hands-on House Half Marathon, 10K & 5K 2018” at www.active.com. Half-marathon runners must register prior to race day, and online registration will end on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Forty-six local law enforcement agencies throughout south central Pennsylvania are joining the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the third targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Aug. 26. South central Pennsylvania municipal departments are from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the third wave will aim to reduce the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating, and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions will also be cited. During the last enforcement wave from March 19 to April 29, 45 participating municipal law enforcement agencies made contact with 4,376 vehicles, issuing 4,144 citations; 2,761 of those citations were speeding violations. In addition, 26 texting violations were cited, 18 fugitive apprehensions were made, and 27 impaired drivers were removed from roadways. The aggressive driving enforcement is a part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). More than 235 municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Pennsylvania are participating. For more information, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

West Fallowfield offers classes for students in preschool through eighth grade. In addition, the school offers a high school co-op for ninth through 11th grades. In 2016, WFCS opened The Academy for incoming students in ninth through 11th grades. The school serves as a resource for families by helping students
meet homeschool requirements, including the compilation of the student work portfolio. The college-style model provides students accountability while they learn to manage their time effectively. Core subjects of English, American literature, algebra 2, advanced algebra, trigonometry, geometry, biology, physics, American history, world history, Bible and Spanish will be taught two days a week on campus. There will also be opportunities to gain
extra-curricular credits at an additional cost. There is also a pay-per-class option available for students to register for individual courses of their choosing. Qualified teachers will prepare lesson plans for the remaining days of the week. Grading and portfolio assistance will also be provided by the staff. Beginning this fall, the Little Falcons Preschool program will offer a full-day option on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The multi-age classroom will feature hands-on curriculum that incorporates reading readiness, math skills, language arts, pre-handwriting, science, arts and crafts, music and movement, drama, devotions, Bible, Spanish, and an introduction to sign language.
