More than 20 years ago, a group of Christian men began taking a golf excursion that involved Bible study. Dubbed Bibles and Bogeys, the yearly event led to six attendees forming a weekly Bible study group that meets at a local restaurant early each Friday morning. About two years ago, group member Tom Despard turned to fellow member Neil McCauley and asked if he would like to help organize a benefit golf tournament. “I said, ‘Are you crazy?’” recalled McCauley, pointing to the plethora of golf tournaments held in the area. However,
McCauley soon changed his mind about the effort. “Tom told me about Safe Families for Children (a ministry of Bethany Christian Services (BCS)), and I said, ‘I am in,’” shared McCauley. The resulting golf tournament, named the Bethany Charity Golf Classic, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the awards presentation dinner, which will feature crab cakes and chicken, will start at 5:30 p.m. The competition can accommodate 144 golfers. Despard is well-acquainted with the work of BCS, having been involved with See Golf Tournament pg 11
Organizers of the first Bethany Charity Golf Classic to be held at Foxchase Golf Club on Sept. 26 include (from left) Rob Lukowski, Dixon Miller, Tom Despard, Neil McCauley, Allen Lafferty, and (not pictured) Will Charles. The tournament will raise funds for Safe Families for Children, a ministry of Bethany Christian Services that offers an alternative to foster care.

Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted Ames. “It used to be called the Dream

Lancaster To Host 9/11 Stair Climb “(The 9/11 Stair Climb) gives everybody a chance to pause and remember 343 firefighters who died and what they sacrificed that day,” explained Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb committee chair Scott Yuill. “It’s our chance to honor those 343,” added committee member Joyce Mokros. The eighth annual Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration for participants will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. with a time of calisthenics. Bagpiper Heidi Tywalk will play “Amazing Grace,” and East Petersburg Fire Company (EPFC) chaplain Bob Kauffman will give an invocation. Participants will begin climbing the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs at approximately 9:30 a.m. Moments of silence will be observed at the times the Twin Towers fell. The event will conclude in a new
manner this year. The first 343 participants will receive a badge representing a firefighter who died in the World Trade Center collapse on Sept. 11, 2001. An additional group of people may receive badges representing police officers, as supplies are available. As individuals complete the climb, they may ring a bell and announce the name of the person whose badge they carry. Yuill explained that this new procedure is based on the method used in New York City to honor first responders who died in the line of duty. Prior to the introduction of two-way radios on fire trucks, a system of bells was used to communicate the location of fires. At firefighters’ funerals, 20 tones were rung in groups of five. The pattern of 5-5-5-5 will be sounded at the start of the 9/11 Stair Climb. The bell used for the event previously hung on a fire engine used by the EPFC. The 9/11 Stair Climb is typically attended primarily by first responders, but anyone is welcome. “(This is) a chance for fire

Event Tshirts will be included in the registration fee for those who sign up by Friday, Aug. 24. After that date, folks may register at the event, but the availability of shirts will not be guaranteed. for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the case of fog or other hazardous conditions. The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30-mile cycling tours and 1, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes. The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops,” explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strengthening individuals and families touched by mental illness, and Faith Friendship Ministries of Mountville, which provides residential care and housing, along with shared independent living situations

for local individuals. Another sponsor is New Hope Community Life Ministry, located in Quarryville. The organization promotes healing and abundant life through Jesus Christ. Millersville University and the school’s Cy Fritz Foundation, which supports Millersville University’s cross-country and track and field programs, are also sponsors. There is a minimum fee for cyclists and walkers to register for the ride, but participants may also fundraise for a chosen organization. “A lot of people collect sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile,” explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal is for 10 area
residents to participate with the organization to raise $5,000 for Faith Friendship Ministries, and she added that those who cannot participate themselves may sponsor residents of Faith Friendship who have committed to walk in the event. “We are looking for people in the community to sponsor one of our residents,” she said. “We have people who love to walk, but they don’t have connections in the community (to gather sponsors), so if someone would like to sponsor one of them, they can do so.” Those who would like to register through Faith Friendship may visit www.faithfriendship.org. Participant Jonathan Shenk said that he first got involved in NLAM after hearing a presentation at West End Mennonite Fellowship. “I found their mission compelling and decided to begin supporting the organization,” said Shenk, who discussed his interest in cycling with an NLAM representative. “One thing led to another, and I ended up riding in the event last year and … contributing some ideas for growing the event in coming years.”

than 50 trips to Israel. When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from Sunday, Sept. 8, to Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places

where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of students from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back,” said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking,” she noted. Around that same time,
Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, which stands for Church’s Ministry Among Jewish People. The ministry was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more biblical content into a travel program for laypeople?” “(We wanted) a program for people who wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus and understand the relationship between Old and New Testament and understand Jesus in the Second Temple period,” explained Newell. “That’s how we came to develop the Shoresh program.” Newell explained that “Shoresh” is Hebrew for “root.” “(It’s a study program about) the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and seeing Jesus in His timeframe and understanding that as we walk the land,” said Newell. Bible and bring deeper meaning to the text. “I use Hebrew to help people understand, (because) when we hear what the people in (Jesus’) day heard, it helps us to be better disciples. A clearer understanding of the Bible is what Shoresh is all about.” After leading so many tours of Israel, Newell noted that she has been struck by both the differences and similarities between bands of participants. “Each group is unique, and each bonds in a wonderful way,” she said. “They all come back saying they are surprised by how much (more) information (they now have about) the Bible they have been studying all these years, and that tells me we are achieving what we set out to do … to help people see Jesus more clearly and understand the Bible more clearly.” Before moving to New Holland, Newell was on staff at the Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh, where she earned master’s and doctoral ministry degrees. While on staff at the school, she created the Israel travel study program. Readers who would like to learn more about the September 2019 trip to Israel may email theresa@cmj-usa.org or call 412680-6843. the ministry in a number of volunteer positions for 30 years, including serving as past national board chair. He noted that BCS chapters nationwide hold golf tournaments to raise funds. When Despard told members of the Bible study group about Safe Families for Children, they became dedicated to the cause. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. The program has been shown to be much less costly than utilizing the foster care system, and in most cases, the children are returned to their family. Mark Unger, BCS regional director, said that BCS offers two programs to help children in crisis in Lancaster County. “One is a prevention program to prevent children from having to go into foster care, and the other is Safe Families,” said Unger. McCauley noted that he and other members of the Bible study, including Dixon Miller, Allen Lafferty, Rob Lukowski, and Will Charles, are committed to the cause of Safe Families. “It’s about keeping the families together,” he said. “We all know families can get into crisis, (and Safe Families) gives the parents or grandparents a timeout.” The goal of the golf tournament is to raise $70,000 to cover a funding cut gap that BCS recently suffered. “Safe Families does not produce revenue,” ex plained Unger. “It is fully funded by donations and grants.” To make the golf tournament stand out, members of the group have worked to create special contests for the event. “ We are doing some unique things to make this a little different from the average (golf outing),” noted McCauley, adding that the goal is to make the outing fun without being too quirky. One example of an unusual activity will include having some oldstyle hickory stick golf clubs at one hole, along with a video camera. “We will allow a team to use a hickory stick without the stroke counting toward their scores, and we will video people doing this,” noted McCauley. Other contests will include cumulative par 3 greenies, closest to the pin, longest drive, and a putting contest, among others. Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available. Interested individuals may register at www.bethany.org/ Lancaster/Events. Readers may also register by calling 717-399-3213 or emailing driddell@bethany.org.
