According to the authors of “Because of Jesus I Am …” the idea for the 20-day devotional came from a group conversation centered on today’s major social issues. The journey of the devotional into the realm of identity is the group’s way of reaching out and providing a resource to those who are struggling.
“Because of Jesus I Am …” is slated to be in print and available online starting in September. To find the online version, readers may search for “Because of Jesus I Am …” at www.youversion.com. Those who prefer a printed version may pick one up at after Sunday, Oct. 1, The Factory at 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Printed copies will also be available at the churches whose ministers participated in writing the booklet.
This is the third time the group of pastors and others involved in ministries in the greater Pequea Valley area have completed a

devotional. The group, which meets the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., first “gathered,” in a virtual format, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the
restrictions it brought about. The first booklet focused on trusting God during the pandemic, and the second one delved into the meanings behind Christmas carols.
Healthier homes
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Responding to the elevated levels of lead in the blood of children in Lancaster county, Lancaster General Hospital - part of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health - (LGH) began offering Lead-Free Families, a program aimed at eliminating the threat of lead in homes in the county. Out of the Lead-Free Families program grew a new program called Healthy Homes. “Lead-Free Families was all about addressing lead hazards in properties in Lancaster County,” explained Marisol Maldonado, manager of the Lead Poisoning Prevention

Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church, Paradise, who recently became the group’s moderator, explained that the pastors who wrote the devotional chose to work
with specific verses. “Each verse includes (the words) ‘In Christ’ or ‘In Jesus,’” he explained. “(The verses) highlight how our union with Christ changes our identity.”

Local Scout earns Eagle Award
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Noah Zink, a member of Boy Scout Troop 20 in Atglen, recently earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest honor in Scouting. His Eagle Court of Honor ceremony took place on July 23 at The Parkesburg POINT, where Noah completed his required Eagle Scout Service Project - the construction of two cornhole sets, which were painted with The POINT logos, and an adult-size hook and ring game that was installed on the property. Noah was already familiar with The POINT because he and his family used to live in the area. In
addition to completing his project there, he volunteered at the youth center for eight hours in order to earn his Citizenship in the Community merit badge, which is one of the required merit badges that Eagle Scout candidates must earn. While there, he met Bud Herman, The POINT’s director of operations, who suggested the Eagle project, which had to be approved by the troop committee and the Chester County Boy Scout Council.
“An Eagle Project must benefit the community in some way and give the Scout an opportunity to demonstrate his leadership skills,” Noah explained.

Program. “We quickly realized these homes had other needs outside of lead hazards.” Those needs included missing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, a lack of railings and grab rails, and leaking roofs. “We realized if we address the chipping and peeling paint, the roof leak will just destroy what we have done,” noted Maldonado, who soon was looking for ways to help address other hazards in area homes.
Working with the grants office at LGH, Lead-Free Families applied for a Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant to fund Healthy Homes. The three-year grant of $2 million to address health hazards identified in Lancaster County homes that qualify was up and running in July of 2022.
“(Healthy Homes) is for owneroccupied properties,” explained Maldonado, who noted that the income requirement to qualify for the program is 80% of the area median income for Lancaster County. “For a family of four, the limit is $76,400,” she noted. According to Maldonado,

when possible, Lead-Free Families and Healthy Homes work hand in hand, but Healthy Homes is also offered alone for seniors who have needs in their homes but do not necessarily have children living there. Mobile homes located on property owned by the home’s inhabitant may qualify.
Area residents can connect with Healthy Homes through local hubs such as the Together Initiative Network in Pequea Valley or The Candy Factory in Lancaster city. Leaha Shermeyer, outreach coordinator for LeadFree Families, takes information about both programs to local organizations. “We want to let people know this is not just for families with children,” said Maldonado. “It can be for any home in Lancaster County where they are experiencing something that impacts the health of the family.”
“When we go in, we assess (the home for health and safety hazards),” explained Maldonado. If there are more hazards than Healthy Homes can address with HUD funds, the haz-
ards are prioritized. The issues that cannot be addressed by Healthy Homes are pointed out to homeowners, and they are educated about ways to remedy those.
Anna Beasley, director of adult advocacy with The Factory Ministries, said that she has worked with the program since it began. “We love all the different programs LGH has to offer,” she said, noting that she can help area families apply for Lead-Free or Healthy Homes aid.
Healthy Homes has set a goal of assisting 176 county homeowners over the life of the grant. “By 2024, we will apply again, so there will be no
gap in services,” said Maldonado. Once an applicant is approved, it generally takes about four months to complete repairs. More information about the program may be found at https://tinyurl.com/2epzkr9x. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

NHELC plans International Celebration
BY ANN MEAD ASH
For several years, the New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC) held an International Meal, but for 2023, NHELC development director Raquel Vera is planning a feast for visitors’ eyes, ears, and noses, with a side of cultural immersion. This year, NHELC will hold its first International Celebration, and the event will include a variety of food items, dance, traditional garb, crafts, and more from a number of other countries.
The celebration, which Vera has called a “cultural explosion,” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Vera is working with El Condado, which is providing a variety of appetizers. Food that Vera has lined up for the event includes tacos al pastor; chicharrones, which are sausages; chicken kabobs; chicken satay; tandoori wing; street corn; spanokopita; loukomades; smoked hummus; and falafel.
“We will have dances,” said Vera, who noted that dances representing India and Mexico will be performed, as will the lion-dragon
dance representing Vietnamese culture.
NHELC teachers will decorate individual classrooms to represent specific countries, and children will have the opportunity to make a craft representing that country.
“We will have four countries represented,” said Vera, who listed Japan, Germany, Guatemala, and the United States - specifically Hawaii. There will also be cultural
displays for Kenya and Colombia.
In addition, a fashion show will be held to display the traditional garb from many countries, including Colombia, El Salvador, Bolivia, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam.
The event is a fundraiser for NHELC, which currently serves more than 100 children with the mission of supporting the needs of every

He went on to note that the emphasis of the devotional is that identity is not based on who the world or family members say someone is but on what Christ says.
Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, noted that the experience of writing the individual devotionals was enjoyable. “I know the truth of what it means to be in Christ, but to take the time with my passage, which was Romans 8:1, the truth of who I am in Jesus Christ washed over me afresh and

Dave Smucker, executive director for Alliance Network, pointed out that working on the project as part of a team was important. “All we had to do is bring our part and let the pieces lock together,” he said.

One of Noah’s responsibilities included acquiring donations for the project. “I reached out to businesses in the Parkesburg area,” he said. “Wilde Funeral Home gave us a donation up front for the project, which almost paid for all of our needs.”
Walter & Jackson Inc. in Christiana provided the lumber, and family, friends and community members provided the remaining donations of supplies, including nails, metal hooks and the corn-
hole bean bags. The work was completed over several weekends. “Volunteers from my family, my friends from school and Boy Scout troop members came out to The POINT,” Noah said. “I led them through assembling the cornhole boards and putting together the hook and ring game, (which included) painting and assembling it.”
Herman and Dwayne Walton, The POINT’s executive director, stopped by during the process to
show their support and they allowed him to have his Court of Honor ceremony on-site as a way to express their appreciation. Noah was also able to present leftover funds from the project to The POINT.
During Noah’s Scouting tenure, he was part of Pack 59 of Gap, Pack 28 of Paradise, Troop 28 of Paradise and Troop 20 of Atglen.
Noah participated in a high adventure trip to Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada with

DIRECTIONS: From Rt. 322 outside of Lincoln, turn NE on Hackman Rd. Go 1 mile to right turn on Spook Lane, to first buildings on the right.
HOUSE LISTING: An outstanding 102-acre beef/chicken/crop farm. Mostly square plotting, some of the best soil anywhere on the highly productive farm. Beautiful historic Limestone farmhouse dates back to 1764, has desirable 24’x13’ eat-in kitchen w/seating area; 23’x13’ living/dining room; family room; storage room; ML laundry; mud room; 5 bedrooms; 1.5 bathrooms; beautiful stamped concrete patio; un-improved basement; oil furnace; updated windows; on-site septic.

STORAGE BUILDINGS: 88’x55’ steel equipment shed, 1 work bay has over-head door, concrete floor; older 60’x30 tobacco barn transformed into vehicle garage w/ finished lower level had small business w/office area. Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.
AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.
