LBC To Stage “Tradition!” In Honor Of Past Musicals By Ann Mead Ash When Dave Felty, head of the musical theater program at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), realized that this fall would mark the 10th year since the music, worship, and performing arts division of the college began to produce musicals, he knew he had to plan a fall
show that would honor the accomplishment. “This felt like a great time to celebrate a little bit of every show we have done,” shared Felty. “We won’t hit every show, but we will hit most of them.” To mark the milestone, Felty has planned “Tradition!” The dinner and concert format production will feature
18 students from the worship, music, and performing arts track. Shows will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, with dinner at 6 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28, with a meal at noon and concert at 1:30 p.m. A concert will also be held on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend may purchase

By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Not long after Danielle Elliott received the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award from Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster at the Inn at Leola Village on May 29, she headed for the Pocono Mountains, where she works at a summer camp for children. In the fall, she will return to her job as a learning support teacher at Burrowes Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster. For Elliott, who just signed up to volunteer for her sixth season with GOTR, working with children fulfills an important purpose. “Emotional and behavioral (needs) are what I am drawn to,” said Elliott, who noted that she was See Ellen Award pg 14

After hijacked airplanes impacted the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, triggering their collapse, the nation vowed to never forget the lives lost in that tragedy. A decade later, Lancaster-area firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. As a result, Yuill and his firefighter colleagues hosted the first Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb, See 9/11 Memorial pg 7

Felty listed “The Sound of Music” and “The Pirates of Penzance” among the early shows that were staged at the school. “We are doing ‘(I Am the Very Model of a) Modern Major General,’ (from ‘Pirates’),” noted Felty. When Felty joined the faculty at LBC, the musical theater program was really just getting started. “My first year was 2013-14,” recalled Felty. “We had three musical theater majors.” The small number did not keep Felty from staging “Seussical” at the school that winter. “Godspell” is a show that Felty

Felty said he plans to draw from “The Sound of Music,” “Mary Poppins,” and “The Music Man,” among other shows that have been featured at the school. “This will be music that people will recognize for the most part,” he noted. “Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts

In return, the Lions will make a donation to the GSHS Marching Band Booster Club. The New Holland Rotary Club will sell water at the event. This year, a signed and framed Myrtle Tremblay print of a street scene from Lancaster will be given away at 5:30 p.m. NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) secretary/treasurer Sue Noll recently looked back on the success of this summer’s program, which brought a number of returning and new musical acts to the New Holland Area Community Park on East Jackson Street on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. “It has been a good summer with a lot of great shows,” said Noll. Traditionally, the final NHSAP event of the summer is the annual Fiddler’s Picnic. This year’s picnic will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, but the opening and closing times will be different. Live music will begin at 9 a.m. when the Summit Hill Bluegrass band will take the stage. Fiddlers are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a slot on the park stage. The event will conclude at 6 p.m. The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a
group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own mini concert. In addition to string players, individuals who play accordion, harmonica, and keyboard may visit the park to join in on wellknown favorites such as “Rocky Top,” “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and “Golden Slippers.” Country and bluegrass tunes are staples of the event. The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase. According to Lions Club representative James Bronson, club members will serve barbecued

Prince St., Lancaster. Festivities will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9 a.m. Activities at this year’s Heart Walk will include free CPR demonstrations, blood pressure screenings and children’s activities. Lancaster General Health will welcome walkers at the registration table and hand out healthy snacks along the walk route. The event will culminate with a 1-mile or 3-mile walk around

the Franklin & Marshall University campus. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are permitted to join their humans in the concourse of the Barnstormers’ home stadium and during the walk, but dogs are not permitted on the baseball field. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy For Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has served as a presenting sponsor of the movement since 2013. In addition to supporting the Heart Walk, LG Health has supported the planting of American Heart Association Teaching Gardens at five Lancaster elementary schools, the establishment of a labeled walking path around Buchanan Park, the installation of three bicycle repair stations in the city of Lancaster and one along WERT trail in Warwick Township and the installation of a bicycle rack at King Elementary. This year, LG Health and the American Heart Association will collaborate on the installation of a drinking water filtration station at Lampeter-Strasburg High School to provide students with access to clean drinking water as an alternative to sugary beverages. The Lancaster Heart Walk is chaired by Bernadette Taylor, senior executive vice president and chief human resources
officer for Fulton Financial Corporation. The Lancaster Heart Walk is presented by LG Health and Fulton Bank, with additional support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, UPMC Pinnacle and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. Organizers have set a goal to raise $325,000 from the Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. Walkers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn additional prizes. Dollars raised will support the American Heart Association’s lifesaving mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through investments in heart disease and stroke research, health care quality improvement, advocacy, prevention and education. For more information about the Lancaster Heart Walk or to sign up to participate, readers may visit www.heart.org/lan casterwalk or call 717-730-1714. The event will begin at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in Lancaster.

which was patterned off similar events held around the country. “It’s a good event to focus people’s attention on what actually happened. We promised to never forget,” Yuill said. “(The stair climb) makes (9/11) more real - you’re doing what they were doing: climbing steps.” Now, as another anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during

the ceremony too. Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. A video will play on the stadium’s jumbo screen, and the badgeholders will be asked to stand when their person is identified. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. “That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bell-ringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s

climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexible. Mokros pointed out that it was all in a day’s work for first responders. “They fight fires rain or shine,” Mokros remarked. Participation in the stair climb is open to folks of all ages. Children must be accompanied by adults. There is a cost to participate. Folks may register in advance and be guaranteed to receive an event T-shirt by visit www.lancaster stairclimb.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Aug. 23. After that date, folks will have to register at the event. Credit cards will be accepted for online registration, but only cash and checks will be accepted for day-of registration. Spectators are encouraged to attend and will be admitted free of charge. In addition to Yuill and Mokros, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee includes Frank Mokros, Dawn MokrosRathgeb, Roger Howard Jr., Don Schoenberger, and Mark Cohen. When members of the Shady Maple Benevolence and Community Outreach Committee first heard about the CrossNet Ministries Pathways to Housing program, which provides safe and affordable housing to ELANCOarea individuals, families, seniors, and veterans who are experiencing or are about to experience homelessness, they wanted to hold a fundraiser to help. “CrossNet is trying to (provide) apartments (for those in need), and it was something that touched our hearts,” said Gwen Zahm, who, along with fellow committee member Mylon Weaver, came up with the idea of holding a 5K run. “It felt right that (CrossNet) would benefit.” The first Shady Maple Benevolence Committee 5K Walk/Run and 1-Mile Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. Registration on the day of the event will begin at
7:15 a.m., and the race will start at 8 a.m. Zahm said that she and Weaver originally wanted to hold the 5K on the Shady Maple campus in East Earl, but when that was not possible, she suggested the park where she was familiar with the 5K course. “It’s rolling hills and beautiful scenery,” said Zahm of the course that runners will complete in a double loop. “It goes through the trees a bit, and some of it is on gravel.” Zahm did not believe the course would be too challenging for new runners. The event will be professionally timed. Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet, said that the organization believes that every person in the community should have a safe and affordable place to live. “Pathways to Housing is a 12- to 18-month program that focuses on empowering participants to build their resources, including financial literacy, physical health care, education, and emotional resources,” explained
Dahl. “Our desire is to collaborate and partner with local organizations, churches, businesses, and municipalities to see participants meet their goals and find permanent housing after completing the program.” In the last year, CrossNet has provided case support to about 250 individuals in the New Holland area. Dahl is happy to be working with the local business on the event. “We are incredibly thankful Shady Maple is hosting a 5K fundraiser … for our Pathways to Housing program,” she said. “ We are excited to run and walk together as a community to address homelessness in ELANCO.” Sandra Paredes, who heads the benevolence committee, noted that this is not the first time Shady Maple has partnered with CrossNet Ministries. “We appreciate that CrossNet is a ministry of integrity, which encourages us to partner with them,” said Paredes. “We have similar values,” she added, referencing the
company vision statement, which is “Serving all with honor and integrity.” Paredes explained that two aspects of that vision are compassion and giving generously. “This (fundraiser) fits well with our values, vision, and mission,” she said. Individuals who wish to take part in the 5K or fun run may register online at www.pretzelcity sports.com. A nominal service fee will apply, and online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Those who register by Tuesday, Sept. 10, will receive a discount and a T-shirt. Breakfast sandwiches will be available for runners following the race. Prizes will be awarded to top overall male and female finishers and to the first three male and female finishers in each of eight age groups. There will also be an award given to the individual who obtains the most sponsors. Those who cannot take part but would like to contribute may visit donation jars located in the Shady Maple Farm Market,

A Growing Adventure The Edible Classroom Wraps Up Fruitful Summer By Chelsea Peifer
Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with students throughout Lancaster County. From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace
Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a garden-related topic with a readaloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should
not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim
Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculumbased garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained. On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the
community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.theedibleclass room.org/5k-registration. Those who register by Friday, Sept. 6, will receive a discounted rate and a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Event-day registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and
open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. To learn more about how to get involved, readers may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedibleclassroom .org. Volunteers are welcome to serve in various capacities.
