All events will take place outdoors in a grassy area behind the church, and there will be no charge for any of the activities. All children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult.

“ We will have a bounce house, a barrel train ride, carnival-type games, and (congregation members) will present a puppet show at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.,” said Rachael Woodring, a member of the carnival’s organizing committee. “Every kid will leave with a goodie bag.” Information about the church and its services and outreach activities will be included in the bag. Food items will also be offered. “Everyone will get a hot dog, a baked good, a snow cone, popcorn and cotton candy,” Woodring explained, noting that additional quantities of food can be purchased. The carnival is just one community outreach offered by Limeville UMC. It also holds an annual Christmas program for families and an Easter egg hunt. Most recently, the church revitalized Limeville Christian Preschool, which will be in session beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and opened Limeville’s Blessings, a store that offers free clothing, hygiene products, basic household items and children’s toys to people in need. Limeville’s Blessings is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and the first Saturday of each month from noon to 4 p.m. The store is also open by appointment. “ We just hit our one-month mark; it’s going really well,” reported Woodring. “I am there every Thursday, and for the past three weeks, five to eight families (have visited). On (a recent) Saturday, we had 10 families. We had some moms looking for back-to-school (items) and a lot of young families that are struggling.”

Face painting, sand art, children’s games and a puppet show will all be featured during a Kids Carnival to be presented at Limeville United Methodist Church (UMC) on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m.

W hen Wally Calderon, director of the Servant Stage production of “Ragtime,” first saw the production in 1999, he knew he wanted to direct it. Now, as the cast of about 50 rehearses, he looks forward to bringing the musical to the local stage. “The challenges of ‘Ragtime’ are in its strong content,” said Calderon, who quickly added, “(The show) leaves you with hope for a future where there can be harmony and unity.”

Servant Stage will present “Ragtime” at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on three consecutive weekends, Fridays through Sundays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 2. Shows will be at 7 p.m. on Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.Themusical follows three groups of people who are in New York state when the story begins in 1902. Coalhouse, a musician played by Josh Green, and Sarah, played by Kylie Jo Smith, are from Harlem. Tateh, a silhouette artist, played by Andrew Zahn, and his Little Girl, played by Kate Zahn and Lauren Watts, have recently arrived from Latvia. The third group is a wealthy New Rochelle family that has made money in fireworks. The family members are known only as Mother, played by Sarah Zahn; Father, played by David Diehl; Little Boy, played by Luke Stone and Julian Ford; and Mother’s sibling, Younger Brother, played by Tyler Hoover. Calderon noted that the story focuses on a specific moment in time and what lies ahead. “It follows these groups on their journeys when they are starting to intermingle,” said Calderon. “It’s a story about the last moments when these groups were so separate and so foreign to one another. It comes with a lot of sensitive issues, and the biggest challenge is communicating to the audience that it’s not something that only happened 120 years ago.”Calderon called “Ragtime” “colorful,” noting that the show is mostly sung and includes historical figures such as Harry Houdini, vaudeville entertainer Evelyn Nesbit, and J.P. Morgan. “These characters are woven through the story to tell us these things actually occurred,” he said, pointing out that the Henry Ford character sings a song about conveyor belts that discusses how mass production has begun to speed up manufacturing. Even the ragtime music itself would soon be sped up into jazz. The cast includes several children, and Calderon noted that this is intentional. “(The) children are sort of a representation of the new century in the things they say and the way they act,” he said. Although the groups represent different peoples and experiences, Calderon emphasized what they have in common. “All the parents relate to Tateh and his Little Girl and his fear of losing her, and they find themselves relating to Mother, who is feeling a pull to become something (more),” he said. “In the final picture, it shows members of each of those groups together and hopeful.”Performances will, and donations are welcome.

dental, behavioral health, and social services, with behavioral health functioning as part of an integrated model. “Research has demonstrated that the initial conversations people have about mental health issues happen at a medical appointment,” noted Concepcion. “(A patient will) come in for something else, but say to provider, ‘By the way, I have been feeling like this,’” she explained. “That’s a natural transition for a provider to do a warm hand-off to a behavioral health consultant.” That hand-off will include referral to a master’s -evel behavioral health consultant who may be a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or in training to reach that level. “They assess that patient and they can do therapy with them,” said Concepcion, who added if a patient is in need of psychiatric services and medications, two nurse practitioners who specialize in psychiatry can help. Patients may also be referred to community resources, but those individuals may not be located in New Holland. “The current LCSW comes once a week, but she can do tele-med (appointments) as well if the patient can’t come the day she is here,” said Concepcion, who noted that for some patients, lack of transportation is a barrier. “Having the ability to do telemed can really help,” she said. Concepcion pointed out that connecting medical health with behavioral health can be beneficial for a number of reasons. “A lot of physical symptoms come out of behavioral health needs,” she said. “It’s a wholecare approach,” she added, noting that Union looks beyond physical and psychological symptoms. “A lot of patients with behavioral health needs have social deterrents of health,” she explained, noting that housing issues, financial issues, and food insecurity may be among these. “We include social workers and community health workers in whatever needs the patient has,” she said. “Having collaboration between clinician, behavioral health, and social work really wraps services around that patient to help them get Concepcionbetter.”stated that Union accepts all insurance plans. “Anybody can come here,” she pointed out. “We have a sliding fee for those who are uninsured.” Individuals and families may be connected to a social worker to learn what programs they qualify for. “(Social workers) will help them through the process of applying,” said Concepcion, who encourages those who are uninsured to call to learn more.

Just prior to March 19, Svitlana Shekh, living in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with her two young daughters, made the decision to leave. The war was intensifying. “Every night Russian fighter jets flew overhead,” she recalled. “We had spare clothing next to us (as we slept), so we could pick up and leave any minute.” On March 19, Svitlana drove the three to the Russian border. Donetsk has been under Russian occupation since 2014. The Shekhs crossed the Russian border and drove more than 1,500 miles north to the Latvian border, where Svitlana was advised to think hard about crossing because she would not be allowed to return. Svitlana’s husband, David, was waiting for her in Latvia, and she chose to go. David had been working in Germany as a ceramic tile installer. From Latvia, the family drove more than 1,200 miles to Germany, and from there they were able to fly to Boston, landing on June 3. The Shekhs came as part of a group of five families, but there are many more who want to leave Ukraine or are internally displaced persons and in need of help, according to Konstantin

Reznik, a member of Bethany Slavik Church in Ephrata. The church has organized the Refugee Welcome Fundraising Dinner, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Ephrata Business Center, 400 W. Main St., at 6 p.m. The meal will feature refugees sharing their stories and opportunities for attendees to sponsor families for housing, food, and transportation. The Gap Town Clock Lions Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at a member’s home. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 6. For the meeting location, email Wenrich at swenrich@fultonbank.com.Wenrichnotedthatthe club has about 20 members, who pay yearly dues to participate. He is hoping that the upcoming meeting will attract additional members. “If you are interested in serving in the community, we would love to have you join,” said Wenrich. In addition to social activities, the club sponsors an annual Christmas bazaar at Gap Fire Hall. “It is both a social and community-service-oriented (club),” Wenrich noted. “We have an annual picnic at a member’s pool, but we also do the bazaar. We recently gave money to the Christiana Ambulance Association. We want to help the community.”

Meet Me At The Handboards

Today, street signs are found on nearly every street corner in the United States, but at one time, only main crossroads had a post with directional arrows pointing to towns that could be reached by heading “that way.” In the 17th century, English signposts had arms pointing in four directions, with the name of the town to be reached in that direction painted on each. They were called “fingerboards.” In 19th-century America, the signs on the post were often closed hands with the index finger extended, pointing to the village that could be reached by heading down that road. Hence the name “Handboards.” They were usually painted white with black lettering, sometimes with the addition of mileage. By the 20th century, signs had devolved into just a narrow piece of wood with one end cut into a “V.” Often there would be four or more signs on a post like the wellknown signpost on the television seriesLike“M*A*S*H.”othermunicipalities in Lancaster County, Salisbury Township had its share of signposts. But perhaps the most well-known actually gave its name to the site where it stood. The “Handboards” sign was located at the corner of Springville Road (Route 897) and Ranck and Meetinghouse roads, near the East Earl Township line. In the 1800s and early 1900s, the directional signpost led travelers to Meadville, Narvon, New Holland, Cambridge and Gap. People from the area would meet at that corner to journey together to whichever town they planned on visiting. In days before telephones were common, people might have sent a postcard to announce intentions to meet “at the Handboards.” In the mid-20th century, the Handboards was a designated bus stop for children of that area. Jack Hillard is a historian whose passion is researching and recording distinctive historical sites of local interest. He has researched several sites along Ranck Road and has fashioned easily read memorial signs placed at those sites. Hillard wanted to erect a new version of that “Handboards” sign where the original had Unfortunately, stood. there was little memory of what the signs on the post looked like. The Historical Society of Salisbury Township joined Hillard in gathering information for his plan to reconstruct the “Handboards” sign. Some people vaguely recalled that they were thin white boards with the “V” shape at one end and the name of the village painted in black. While the society reached out to the community in an attempt to tell the whole story, Hillard designed and constructed the sign that can be seen today, using what little information could be found. The reconstructed sign now proudly stands at almost the original site directing travelers on their journey. The once-famous corner is now memorialized.
