Most Rewarding GOTR Bestows Ellen Award, Seeks Coaches BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Cara Scudner’s young cousin asked her to help with the Girls on Track team she had joined at Sacred Heart in Lancaster in 2013, Scudner was prepared. Having taken 5:30 a.m. jaunts with Back on My Feet - a running program for members of the homeless community - during her last year of college, Scudner signed on as assistant coach. Following the end of that season, Scudner contacted Jen West, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director, to ask where the program might use her as a coach. Since then, Scudner, who is a competitive adult figure skater with the Red Rose Figure Skating Club, has coached 17 seasons with GOTR, including stints at Fritz and Nitrauer elementary schools and even organizing a community team made up of girls from public, private, and homeschool situations in Leola during

or 16-year-old Armen Caravantes, the love of gardening started a few years ago with the community garden program at the Parkesburg Library. He and his mother used the raised bed gardening program to get outside and spend some time together. Like his grandparents before him, he and his mother enjoyed the gardening. So, the next year, they planted in

even more of the beds. Caravantes became so interested in growing vegetables, he enrolled in the Seeds to Supper educational program offered by the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB). At the same time, seeing the health issues facing his family Caravantes decided to focus on organic methods of raising produce. When COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in the spring of 2020, the Wagontown
resident rented a plot of land in Lancaster County, and he and his mother began raising vegetables in earnest. His family eats some of the produce, sells some of it, and donates some of it. This year, Caravantes rented a 30-by-240-foot plot in Kinzers, where he grows a variety of vegetables using organic methods, which means no pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals. The land was prepared for planting before Caravantes put
down weed barrier and put in his plants. He grows many of his vegetables, including all the tomatoes, from seed. He travels about 20 minutes to tend heirloom tomatoes, including indigo apple tomatoes that have a bluish hue when they begin to grow. He also grows Asian eggplant, black beauty eggplant, and little fingersize eggplants, along with a few ghost peppers and bell peppers. Squash, Swiss and rainbow chard,

Limeville United Methodist Church (UMC) will offer an afternoon of family fun at its annual Kid Carnival on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. Activities will include face painting, sand art, children’s games and a puppet show. All events will take place outdoors in a grassy area behind the church, and there will be no charge for any of the activities. “We will have a bounce house, a barrel

Congregation members will also present a puppet show at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. Woodring noted that since the event is outdoors, no masks will be required. In addition, all children must be accompanied by an adult. “We will have a big prize table that the kids can choose from, and there will be prize

In June of 2021, Scudner was presented with the Ellen Award, which is named for Ellen McCabe, who was West’s stepmother. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, parents, and girls who make up the GOTR teams, among others. Scudner was nominated by parents and participants, with several lauding her positive outlook, caring attitude, availability to the girls, and passion to help them develop self-confidence. Scudner sees coaching as an opportunity to give back while reaping satisfaction from the participants’ accomplishments. “The most rewarding thing is seeing the girls gain confidence and seeing how much they change over the season,” said Scudner, who added that every-

While Scudner organized a community GOTR team at a church near her home during COVID-19 restrictions, the organization is returning to meeting at many Lancaster schools for the fall season. The program will culminate on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a 5K at Millersville University, 40 Dilworth Road, Millersville, at 8:30 a.m. About 20 teams and as many as 400 participants are expected for the fall season, but West would like to see more girls be able to take part in the spring of 2022. To increase the number of participants, more volunteer coaches are needed. “Many of our coaches are teachers, and teachers are so incredibly overloaded right now,” explained West, who is looking to family members of girls and community members to step up. “The girls need the social and emotional connection with friends now more than ever,” said West, who hopes that by spring the program will be able to serve 1,000 girls countywide as in the past. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit www.gotrlancaster .org. Those who have questions about volunteering may email jwest@gotr lancaster.org.

Guild Event To Celebrate Getting Back To Nature attendees about the herb of the year. This year, the herb is parsley. In addition to an educational display board, organizers plan to offer food samples made with parsley. Guild member Susan Atkins noted that parsley is a natural detoxing agent. Other food items will include a variety of herbal beverage samples and fresh baked goods, including guild member Phoebe Oellig’s basil orange sugar cookies. Jellies and jams will also be available for purchase. The guild uses the funds raised by the event to purchase books on the subject of herbs to donate to local libraries, to engage educational guest speakers, and to aid local nonprofit organizations. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month 10 months of the year at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW building. Remollino noted that guild members are grate-

The Herb Festival has been a traditional event for the Conestoga Herb Guild for a number of years. The organization, which has been meeting for about 40 years, did not hold the Herb Festival in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year the event is back with a new location. The festival has been previously held in Leola and at Boettcher House in Manheim Township. The 2021 Herb Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW Post, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. There is plenty of free parking and no charge to visit the Herb Festival. Organizers of the festival design it to celebrate all things herbal with speakers on herb-related topics, displays, and demonstrations.
This year’s theme will be “Getting Back to Nature.” As in the past, there will be a Christmas Corner and a table featuring gently used items to repurpose and recycle. Basket-making demonstrations will be held as well. Additional displays will include fresh herbs, succulents, wreaths, bath products, dried herbs, and possibly cat and dog treats. Natural beauty products, medicinal salves, and insect repellants will be offered for purchase, along with herbal aroma therapy, fresh and dried bouquets, potted plants, and potted herbs, and herbal vinegars. Guild president and festival coordinator Deidre Remollino will bring herbal bath bags filled with dried roses and mint, various sizes of herbal of bath bombs, herbal soaps, and handmade items. Organizers of the Herb Festival always seek to educate

Brace yourself for the “silver tsunami.” That’s a term used to describe the predicted dearth of workers in the future as the current workforce ages into retirement. Through an innovative initiative, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), is equipping students to prepare for their future. For more than 50 years, LCCTC has provided opportunities for high school and adult education, career training and workforce development. The Pathways to Careers and Higher Education program just launched for the 2021-22 school year and will build a bridge between secondary and postsecondary education. It serves as an umbrella over the various postsecondary opportunities available to students, said Amber Kreger, director of higher and continuing education. “This is a way to better serve our community of students by offering a pathway from what they are learning in high school directly into what they will learn in our adult program,” she explained. “The students are already in the same buildings as our adult learners. They cross paths often, so we thought, ‘Why not offer a program where the students can benefit from what we already LCCTC recently launched the Pathways program. do here?’”

(AST) degree. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing with our associate degree programs,” said Mike Moeller, director of curriculum. LCCTC allows credit transfers for students in its high school automotive technology program into its AST associate degree program, and plans are in the works to add the school’s other two associate degree programs - veterinary technology and dental hygiene - to the credit transfer program as well. Moeller noted that programs like the ones offered at LCCTC are meeting the needs of today’s employers while also serving the students. “Over the last few years,
pink celery, ground cherries, zucchini, radishes, beets, and lettuce are also growing in the garden. Weekly, Caravantes takes his crops to Philadelphia, where he sets up a stand near the Please Touch Museum and reaps some of the benefits of his harvest. But generosity is in Caravantes’ blood, and he and his mother said they are impressed with the hearts of those in Lancaster and Chester counties who seek to help others. To that end, Caravantes has donated tomatoes to The Factory Ministries, and other produce to the Octorara Food Cupboard, Mision Santa Maria in Avondale, and the Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA) in Coatesville. Caravantes is also generous in person, offering this interviewer a tasty tomato as we began to
chat. “I love Chadwick cherry tomatoes,” he said. “They’re delicious.” The Plain community has been welcoming of Caravantes and helpful to him on his farming journey. “I have been learning a lot from Amish farmers we know,” he said, adding that Plain community members and other area growers have given him tips on when to start certain vegetables. Likewise, Caravantes is eager to share his own knowledge, starting a garden club with fellow students at Delaware Valley Friends School, where the group has studied aeroponic growing and sustainable agriculture. Readers who would like to learn more about Caravantes’ growing operation may email quakerfarmer organicproduce@gmail.com.
schools have really begun to the see the value of career and technology education as a way to earn a great living and learn skills, but with very minimal college debt,” he said. “There are so many opportunities for jobs in these fields as well.” Kreger agreed, adding that Pathways allows students to come in with a specific plan and the end result in mind. “There is a set goal and finish line,” she said. “That goal may change slightly as they go through their program, but there is a finish line, and we are offering students ways to get there.” For more information on LCCTC or Pathways, visit https://lancasterctc.edu.

FIA Continues Mission Work During Pandemic Mike Butler, Friends In Action’s field leader to Papua New Guinea, was able to teach a missionary how to repair a generator through email exchanges. While solar power provides an energy source, frequent cloudy days can leave missionaries without enough power to charge computers, lights, or fans. A generator provides an additional power source and also enables missionaries to run power tools used to repair damage caused by termites and mold. Bolivian national pastors use WhatsApp to communicate with FIA staff and volunteers. COVID-19 has created significant needs for relief aid such as medication and food in villages along the Amazon River. “Being able to speak directly to national leaders on the frontlines has been instrumental in getting critical supplies to the most desperate villagers,” shared Gary Ferch, FIA’s field leader to Bolivia. Friends In Action International (FIA), a nonprofit in Middletown, has hosted multiple international service trips to remote locations for almost 30 years. Throughout the organization’s six countries of service, volunteers complete a variety of infrastructure projects, life skills trainings, and Bible teaching sessions in support of missionary work targeting unreached people groups. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, travel bans, and social distancing requirements, many of these trips were canceled in 2020 and 2021. How-
ever, FIA has adapted its operations so local volunteers can continue their international mission efforts. Embracing technology options, Friends In Action field leaders and volunteers have used phone calls, texts, and Zoom meetings to continue to connect with indigenous people abroad. “Even in very remote locations, we can FaceTime or speak with national partners and missionaries in real time. Thankfully, we have been able to sustain impacts and service in all locations,” said executive director Tim Johnston.
and volunteers to speak with or text national leaders in Nicaragua working on community transformation projects among the Rama Cay people. “The villagers learned construction skills taught by past volunteer teams, so these check-in conversations ensure that they have the knowledge and supplies necessary to continue building,” reported Johnston. The villagers completed three hurricane-resistant homes independently in 2020, and they have four more houses started this year. Friends In Action has also created stateside and local opportunities for volunteers to continue with hands-on projects. A volunteer team recently returned from the campus of Ethnos360, a missionary training facility in Missouri. In less than a week, the team completed a full kitchen installation, repaired a well house, installed soffit vents and adjusted ridge roofing vents, trimmed out two bathrooms, installed fiberglass paneling, and renovated multiple student rooms. FIA has an additional trip planned to continue these efforts from Sunday to Saturday, Sept. 12 to 18.
Volunteers have also served through various projects offered at FIA’s Middletown headquarters. Tradespeople have recently been making repairs on a barn located on the grounds, installing an entrance sign at the front of
the property, repainting exterior doors, performing mechanical work, and trimming trees. To express interest in volunteering with FIA, contact Paul Brosey at PaulBrosey@fiaintl.org or calling 717-546-0208.
