Organization Aids Homeless In Two Counties By Ann Mead Ash
“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services, when he spoke recently at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. Following the event, IU 13 organizers arrange for a local organization to pick up leftover items that vendors no longer want. This year, a company will take donations for the American Red Cross. There is still room for vendors to take part in the sale. Those wishing to rent a space to sell items may contact tina_herr@iu13.org or 717-606-1600.

Funds raised by space rentals at the annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 yard sale are donated to the IU 13 Social Work Fund, which can cover a variety of needs of IU 13 students. “Social workers (recently) used the funds to help a family facing eviction,” noted Carrie Bruey, IU 13 supervisor of autism solutions, which provides individualized psychological supports for children with autism. The 2018 sale, which is the fund’s largest benefit event, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Burle Business Park on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster. The rain date for the event will be Saturday, Sept. 22. In 2017, the sale attracted nearly 60 vendors. The number of vendors taking part in the fundraiser has grown steadily since 2011, when the first sale was held. Most years, at least 50 vendors have rented spaces at the event.
According to organizers, vendors will offer personal care products, makeup, crafts, jewelry, DVDs, produce, and handmade items, among others. Bruey noted that vendors selling a variety of merchandise take part in the event, including representatives of home-based businesses and families selling outgrown clothing, toys, and other household items. In addition to raising funds from space rentals, IU 13 employees sell food at the event. This year’s menu will include breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the morning and hot dogs, baked goods, and cold beverages at lunch time. Approximately 200 IU 13 employees help organize the yard sale. About 40 employees are onsite on the day of the event, and many more donate food to be sold. Helping families avoid eviction is just one way the Social Work Fund aids students. The fund also helps cover clothing costs or medication for IU 13 students. Funds

Auction from pg 1 The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15,000,000 in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and longterm cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown. The event will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the themed basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable
prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, facepainting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of crafts and art. A farmers market will offer fresh produce and baked goods, including pies, made-on-site Amish doughnuts, soft pretzels, and pizza. New this year will be a tractor show and Artisan Alley, located in the East Hall, which is a collection of gourmet food eateries and juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, Thai rolled ice cream treats, pickles, artisan bread, specialty nuts, and pots. To learn more about the auction, readers may visit www.brethrenauction.org, call 717-723-6863 on the day of the auction, or pick up an auction booklet at local retailers.

Word UP Ministries from pg 1 zoning ordinance had to be changed. That took four months to accomplish with the support of the township supervisors, and now there is an occupancy permit for the church. Meanwhile, for the past year and a half, Word UP has been holding monthly “Soup, Sandwich and Talk” events at the Gap Fire Hall on the last Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. During these gatherings, everyone is invited to enjoy food and fellowship, with an opportunity to hear God’s Word. The “Soup, Sandwich and Talk” evening on Thursday, Sept. 27, will be held at Gap Fire Hall, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap, and then the events will relocate to Dutchland for the October session and onward. Mowday noted that when the gathering moves to Dutchland in October, there will be no formal sermon format. Rather, the “talk” portion of the evening will include a group discussion. Mowday draws inspiration for Word UP Community Ministries from a Bible passage brought to his attention more than 20 years ago by Ann and Jonas Beiler when he started his ministry with Victory Chapel. The passage, Isaiah 43:19, states “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” “About three years ago, the Holy Spirit reminded me of this Scripture, that God wants to do a new thing. For me, and for Word UP, I believe this is the new thing,” Mowday said. Mowday will be the pastor, but he will be taking a different title - lead follower. “Christ will be the Shepherd, I’m going to be the lead follower and other folks that come will be the followers,”
he said. The focus of the church is on service. “We want to serve God by serving others. We’re going to stay focused on that and look for opportunities to do that in Gap and the surrounding community,” Mowday said. Putting together a new church is a big task. “There are a lot of people to thank. First and foremost to thank is my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, for all that He’s done in my life over the years,” Mowday said. “I have a great wife, Verna, that supports me and encourages me in ministry and two great couples, Lloyd and Gail Murphy and Rodney and Stephanie Smoker, who are on the board supporting this whole vision.” “It has been a while working on getting this together,” Lloyd

added. “We had many meetings to see what we can do and how we can do it.” To prepare for the new services, there will be a volunteer training day on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 9 a.m. at the Dutchland building. Those interested in assisting as ushers, greeters, parking attendants or café staff, as well as in other positions, are encouraged to attend the training session and become a part of the ministry. Attendees do not have to contact Mowday in advance to attend. Mowday is also looking for people who would like to be a part of the Sunday service, including worship leaders or those who play guitar or keyboard. Individuals are invited to attend an information session for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to receive valuable information to assist persons in making a wellinformed decision about their health and drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare

5:30 p.m., will feature up to 30 items. “Our silent auction is based on the best of Lancaster County,” said Ames, who noted stays at local guesthouses and passes to area attractions will be among the items up for bids. “We will have two extravagant chocolate baskets,” she added, noting that organizers have put an emphasis on quality rather than a quantity of items on which to bid. The keynote speaker for the dinner will be Catherine P. Downing, author of “Sparks of Redemptive Grace,” which
recounts her experience with a family member struggling with mental illness. Downing’s topic will be “Sparks of Redemptive Grace: Seeking and Seeing God Amid a Loved One’s Mental Illness.” “Downing and her husband have walked this journey with their now-adult son who struggles with bipolar disorder,” explained Ames. Downing is a trained teacher with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Family-to-Family classes. She is a former missionary who currently works with faith-based nonprofit
MCCL Names New Board Member The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) recently named Diana Locke as the newest member of its advisory board. Locke works for Community Justice Project to help survivors of domestic violence and other abuse in immigration law matters. Locke studied law in New York and rural Colorado and has served in the Americorps-affiliated volunteer program where she met her husband, Thomas. Approximately 10 years ago, Locke and her family moved back to Lancaster, her hometown, to be closer to her parents. She and her family attend Lancaster Friends Meeting. Locke is the parent of two Concert Choir singers. The 170-voice choir includes Carol Choir, for grades two through five; Concert Choir, for grades six through eight; Chamber Choir, for grades nine through 12; and Men’s Ensemble, for males in Chamber Choir. In addition to the auditioned performing choirs, MCCL offers two non-auditioned classes: Prelude Music for kindergarteners through grade one and Choristers, for grades two
through eight. The mission of MCCL is training children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The choir’s repertoire reflects the musical diversity of the church around the world and through time. The choirs and the Prelude Music program are open to children from all church backgrounds and are sponsored by Lancaster Mennonite School as a service to the community.
organizations as a communications consultant. She has been lauded for her compassion and vulnerability in sharing her story. Special music for the event will be provided by Peggy Grabowski, and local radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies. Ames noted that a plated meal, with entrée options including pecan-crusted salmon, chicken cordon bleu, and a vegan gluten-free option of quinoa black bean saute, will
be served along with salad, bread, and beverages. Ames added that a choice of desserts will include chocolate cake and a seasonal option. A freewill offering will be received at the dinner. “Our goal is to raise close to $51,000,” said Ames, who added that sponsorship options are available. Tickets are required to attend and may be purchased by visiting www.nlam.org or calling the NLAM office at 717-390-4891. Reservations will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 21.

many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers
from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe, secure, and staffed by professional social workers. Good Samaritan Services is a
private, nonprofit, faith-based organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.” Hoffer noted that the organization applies for grants and holds several yearly fundraising events. “About 25 percent comes from grants and about 25 percent from fundraising,” he stated. Adding lighthearted moments into the lives of those it serves is also a goal of Good Samaritan. “We try to have fun,” said Hoffer. “We hold a Christmas party, and once a year, we visit a miniature horse farm to take the (children and their mothers) for an outing,” added Hoffer, who lauded an Ephrata bakery that provides birthday parties for the children at the shelter. Hoffer noted that one of the most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients achieve their goals, but that takes time,” said Hoffer. “There are often a number of issues (involved) that

Each year the dedicated residents who organize Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days decide on a different agricultural process or antiquity to feature at the two-day event, and this year’s theme was chosen at the suggestion of numerous individuals. Bells, whistles, and poultry items - new and old, of all shapes and sizes will be on display for folks to view and learn a bit of history. Organizer Darl Williams has amassed quite a collection of bells and whistles, including several worn by horses pulling the famous Conestoga wagons. In those days, bells announced that a team of horses was coming and signaled to people and animals alike to get out of the way. “Anyone can bring stuff that day to display, and there’s already been a fair amount of people who said they’re bringing these items,” said organizer Ron Bernhard, adding that train whistles and steam whistles will also be among the selection. Poultryrelated items can encompass anything from old feeders to signs, memorabilia, and more. “You’d

Pequea Valley Tennis Tops Blazers, Now 5-0 by Ara Grigorian
In a Section Three match against Lancaster Mennonite, the Pequea Valley girls’ tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory, winning its first league match of the season. The Braves improved to 5-0 overall. Each of the three doubles pairings worked in Pequea’s favor as Sophia Weaver and Naomi Feister first posed an 8-1 victory followed by Adalie Clemmer and Kristin Huenink, who won the second doubles by an 8-0 margin. Ryleigh Kurtz and Hope Fisher were just as dominant, defeating Kate Hoober and Olivia Beiler 8-1. Weaver came away with straight set wins at number one singles (6-1, 6-1) Fiester won the second singles while Clemmer (6-2, 6-0) took the number three singles. Kurtz made it a singles sweep with a defeat of Elleah Stillman. FIELD HOCKEY The Pequea Valley Braves faced a relentless barrage of shots in their Wednesday afternoon LancasterLebanon League field hockey match with Annville-Cleona. With 35 shots on goal, the Little Dutchmen posted a
10-0 victory, highlighted by hat tricks from Grace Renninger and Emily Brightbill. In addition to the hat tricks, Lauren Schrader came through with three assists for the visitors. Pequea Valley fell to 0-2 on the year. Goalkeeper Jordan Melson came through with 25 saves in a match that would have been overwhelming for most keepers. The Braves are looking to find the scoring groove early in this 2018 campaign. Their only other match of the season thus far was a 7-0 setback against league foe Lancaster Country Day, which was played on Friday at Kinzers. Two more league games are scheduled in this coming week - Lancaster Mennonite and Elco. FOOTBALL Sometimes a victory isn’t what is tallied in points on the scoreboard at the end of a game; it can be an effort that boosts a team’s morale and gains momentum into its next game. The Pequea Valley football team came into Friday night’s L-L League game having scored only six points in its first two contests. The Braves were trailing Lebanon

The Braves’ Naomi Feister, left, and Sophia Weaver teamed up to defeat Lancaster Mennonite’s Anika Hurst and Madeleine Gerz, 8-1, at doubles to help Pequea Valley to a 7-0 Section Three win at home last Tuesday.
37-0 at halftime as Isaiah Rodriguez had thrown touchdown passes of 37 yards and 52 yards in addition to Jahlil Young breaking through the Braves’ defense for a 70-yard scamper to the end zone. The Cedars (1-2; 1-1 in league) added to that lead with a 57-yard fumble return by Andrew Bowers. “We were down 44-0 in the second half,” head coach Mike Choi pointed out. “It’s easy to feel sorry for yourself and not go out to give maximum effort. But our guys realized they had an opportunity to play a tough second half. They believed in themselves, the coaches and the program to come out Photo by Connor Hollinger and play the way they did. We played Pequea Valley’s Ryleigh Kurtz defeated Lancaster Mennonite’s better defense too. I’m proud of our Elleah Stillman, 8-5, in a pro-set to add a team point to the guys.” Braves’ 7-0 Section Three victory over Lancaster Mennonite last From that point on, the Braves Tuesday in Kinzers. outscored the Cedars 26-14. The final
score of 58-26 dropped Pequea’s record to 0-3 (0-2 in league). But the offense started to fire on the right cylinders. The Braves first scored on Dylan Jackson’s 10-yard run. Following another big play score by the Cedars, which came in the form of Leighton Rivera’s 61-yard run, Brandon Hershey powered his way over the goal line for another PV touchdown. “Brandon had 130 yards rushing,” Choi pointed out. “He is our power back. He’s going to hit the hole going hard and run with authority. “Dylan Jackson is very dangerous,” continued the coach. “He has the ability to elude tacklers. You can’t get a square tackle on him. He has incredible vision. “Having those guys play off each other helped keep the defense off

balance,” said Choi. “I’m excited to see how those two will help our offense going forward. They are the motor that makes our offense go.” Jackson scored two more touchdowns and was on the receiving end of a two-point PAT. He had a five-yard rushing TD followed by the two-point conversion - a pass from John Smith. He also caught a four-yard TD pass from Smith, the junior quarterback. Choi talked about how the growing process involves both players and coaching staff. “We only had one scrimmage game and we had an earlier start to the season,” he pointed out. “Offensively, in the first half, it takes a little from the coaching staff to understand what you have - what the players are good at. You usually get it by the second or third game.
“We started to figure out who we are in the second half of this game,” he added. The understaffed Braves, who dressed only 24 players for the game and lost a player to injury early on, will host Columbia this Friday night. “We don’t have a ton of depth but we go out and give a strong effort each and every game,” said Choi. BOYS’ SOCCER Heading into the weekend, it was feast or famine for the boys’ soccer team. The Braves pounded league opponent Lebanon 7-0 on Friday afternoon, scoring four times in the first half alone as they directed 20 shots on goal in the match. On Saturday, the squad played to a scoreless draw with Tulpehocken in a nonleague road game with Nehemiah Glick saving seven shots to help the

Braves (3-0-1) earn at least a draw. The victory over the Cedars improved the Braves’ L-L League mark to 2-0-0. T.J. Hershey was the offensive hero, recording a hat trick. Josh Gingrich came away with two goals while Josh Bailey and Nevin Stoltzfus each netted one goal. Brandon Ratjavong and Josh Heinrich each came through with an assist while Glick made five saves to record a shutout. The Braves had outscored opponents 18-2 coming into the Tulpehocken

Hershey’s goal came just 3:00 into the game and Elijah Jenkins, who also had an assist on the day, made it 2-0 in the 10th minute. Meanwhile on the other side of the pitch, Krystin Jarvis needed to make only two saves to claim a shutout. In addition to their goals, Rogers, Shirk and Yoder each assisted on a score. Jarvis had another shutout in Saturday’s non-league game against Tulpehocken. The Trojans out-shot the Braves 8-7 and had four corners to none by Pequea. However, it was Yoder’s overtime goal off a Rogers’ assist that clinched the victory for the Braves. Yoder scored seven minutes into the extra period to give Jarvis (6 saves) and the Braves a shutout victory.

Castro served under President Barack Obama as the 16th secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 2014 to 2017. He oversaw 8,000 employees and a budget of $46 billion. Before serving as secretary, Castro was mayor of San Antonio, Texas. In March 2010, Castro was named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young

Previously, Castro served as a member of the San Antonio City Council and was known for becoming San Antonio’s youngest councilman in 2001. He also became the first Hispanic person to deliver a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. Separate prices have been set for the lecture only and for the reception, dinner, and lecture. Seating is limited for the lecture.

According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal The Teal Sisters, represented by (from left) Kathy Kuhns, Mau- and/or back pain; and Trouble reen Lewandowski, Connie Radziewicz, and Kate Green, are a with bladder and bowels. “The big group of women from Lancaster and York who meet monthly to thing is if the symptom lasts for support each other as they navigate ovarian cancer. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time.” Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else.” The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer” rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer.” “We’re not gloom and doom,” said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other locations as possible. To order teal ribbons and learn more about Turn the Towns Teal, readers may visit www.turn thetownsteal.org. Individuals and organizations that would like to inquire about having the Teal Sisters give an educational presentation on the risk factors and subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer may contact Radziewicz at conniesratt@ comcast.net.
