Piercing Word To Perform At WordUP Ministries By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Piercing Word will present “Parables of Jesus” at WordUP Community Ministries in Gap on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. The presentation will be free, with no need for advance reservations. The performance will feature parables from the Bible, such as the Sheep and the Shepherd, the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. “It’s like the Scripture comes to life. It’s very moving to watch and see what they do,” said Lloyd Murphy, WordUP leadership board member. Piercing Word, which is based in Lancaster, performs dramatic and musical presentations using word-for-word text from the ESV translation of the Bible as the script. The group aims to entertain, inform and spread the Word of God, while promoting memorization of the Bible. “I love the visual of it. “Our key words are accessibility, affordability, and adaptability as far as creating Gospel-rich materials and getting them out (to missionaries),” said Tom Luttmann, executive director of Bible Visuals International (BVI), 650 Main St., Akron. In employing those principles, Luttmann emphasized that the message is not compromised. “Jesus Christ - yesterday, today, and forever,” said Luttmann. “How we do what we do has changed, but not the message.” BVI will celebrate 60 years of supplying missionaries around the world with ways of delivering that message at the organization’s annual banquet at Shady Maple Smorgasboard, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. See BVI pg 14
Inviting the community to attend “Parables of Jesus” at WordUP Community Ministries in Gap on Sept. 21 are (from left) leadership board member Lloyd Murphy and lead follower Buck Mowday from WordUP and Piercing Word executive director Aaron House.

Pavelko characterized the second concert, “Seen” - a song cycle by Kristen Brewer - as “a women’s Bible study in concert form.” “(Brewer) touches on key moments of women in the Bible who are in the lineage of Jesus Christ,” said Pavelko. that because Owens is gaining a reputation as a crossover artist, some jazz pieces will be played as well. On Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., the performance will include the “Four Seasons” pieces by Vivaldi and Piazzolla with Dutch violinist Carla Leurs and the group Cugnon Consort. “People look forward to ‘The Four Seasons,’ and it will be juxtaposed with the ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires’ by Piazzolla, a famous Argentinian composer, so it has a tango feel to it,” said Bigley, who said that Leurs was the first artist to perform at The Trust. “We have been trying to get her back ever since,” he noted, adding that Leurs is teaming with some of the top young musicians in Europe in Cugnon. “It will be a really fiery concert,” said Bigley.
Art And Craft Market Planned
According to Pavelko, last year’s performance of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” was so well attended, it will return on Saturdays, Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14, and Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and on Friday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. “We will make it a holiday tradition,” said Pavelko. The Trust will also feature Row House Forums, and the Square Halo Gallery featuring art inspired by the Christian faith will hold exhibits. A full schedule of events may be found at www.lancastertrust.com. Tickets may also be purchased at the website or by calling 717-560-8241. Readers who wish to purchase tickets in person may call the box office to make arrangements.
Lampeter United Methodist Church, 1101 Village Road, will hold an art and craft market on Saturday, Nov. 2. The church is looking for crafters who make handmade crafts of good quality. Enough jewelers and artists have been found, as well as those making hand-sewn, knit and crocheted items, so other types of crafters are sought. Readers interested in selling crafts may email Mary H. end of the layout, and a water tank is available to service the steam engine. Throughout the garden, most of the vegetation is natural to the area, with moss mixed in with the plants. A few of the plants surrounding the pond are artificial. “We have a fountain and a couple of fishermen there,” said Landis. “There’s a gazebo.” The garden opens in May and closes in October. During the regular season, the garden is generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is also open for special occasions, such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Grandparents’ Day. Club member John Buckwalter has done the math to calculate how far the trains travel during a typical season.

changes lives. Memorizing the Bible has changed how I walk with Jesus and the way that I interact with the Lord and others on a daily basis.” Mowday pointed out that memorization of the Bible makes Scripture available when a printed copy or a computer is not. “The more Scripture you can get into your mind, the better focus you’re going to have on living your life for Jesus,” he said. Piercing Word will be back at WordUP with its “Christmas Through the Ages” performance on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6 p.m. Earlier that day, WordUP members will be involved with the Gap-area Wreaths Across America effort with a ceremony at Salisbury Park and the placing of wreaths on veterans’ graves at area cemeteries. It’s an opportunity to come, to sit, to enjoy and let the Holy Spirit fill your heart.” “Parables of Jesus” features a cast of four performers plus a drummer. “It’s an African-inspired telling of the stories Jesus told, so it will be a very fun, highenergy performance,” said Piercing Word executive director Aaron House. “It’s very imaginative in the way it’s portrayed.” The script is directly from the Bible, using excerpts from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. “In seeing the parables of Jesus come to life on stage, I think the audience will find a new appreciation for the parables, even the reason for the parables,” House explained. “There are lots of opportunities for humor, as well as conviction in seeing the truth in the parables, and, as always, we give the challenge to memorize God’s Word.” Promoting the memorization of Scripture is the mission of Piercing Word. “We don’t just perform Scripture; we challenge everyone everywhere we go to memorize Scripture for themselves. That’s always the goal. Our mission statement is to ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church,” House said. “Jesus

226 Highland Rd., Atglen, PA – doors open at 6:00pm Tim Tebow was a beloved college football champion, Heisman trophy winner, media sensation, and best-selling author drafted in the first round in 2010. He had a miracle playoff run with the Broncos before being traded to the Jets. After one season, he was cut. Next, he was signed by the Patriots then let go after training camp, a scenario that repeated itself the following summer with the Eagles. Tim Tebow has achieved big victories and plunged the depths of failure, all while never letting go of his faith, even in the face of doubt and disappointment. He’ll share why neither the highs nor the lows of his life can define him—and how you can find confidence and know who you are.

The POINT from pg 6 He established the Tim Tebow Foundation in 2010. The foundation helps make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses, builds “Timmy’s Playrooms” in children’s hospitals and provides life-changing surgeries to children of the Philippines through the Tebow CURE Hospital. The foundation also sponsors Night to Shine, prom-like events that are held worldwide on the same evening each year for people with special needs. Throughout the evening, Tebow makes special guest appearances at Night to Shine events around the world. Locally, a Night to Shine event is sponsored by Freedom Life Church. All proceeds from the upcoming fundraiser will benefit The Parkesburg POINT youth center, which provides programs for boys and girls ages 8 to 18. The POINT is designed to be a safe place where youths can spend time in a faithbased environment. The POINT works in partnership with more than 20 local churches to provide a healthy meal for students on Mondays through Thursdays at 6 p.m., year-round. After-school homework help is also offered. Youths who visit The POINT can enjoy games, video gaming, sports and academics. The POINT also offers workshops where young people can learn practical skills such as woodworking, electrical repair and bicycle repair, with an eye toward future careers. Tickets for the fundraiser are currently available at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “Get to The POINT: An Evening With Tim Tebow.” A link to purchase tickets can also be found at www.parkesburgpoint.com. Tickets will not be sold at the door. There are separate prices for adults and for children age 16 and under. Those interested in sponsoring the event are asked to contact Shupp at dshupp@parkesburgpoint.com or 610857-3393, ext. 102. For more information about The POINT, located at 700 Main St., Parkesburg, readers may call 610-857-3393 or visit The POINT’s website or www.face book.com/parkesburg.point.

Pequea Valley’s Caroline Bragg, left, and Kiersten Ann Winey paired up to defeat Elco’s Julia Gettler and Julia Badolato, 8-1, at number three doubles to help the Braves to a 6-1, Section Three win at home last Monday. by Ara Grigorian
The Pequea Valley girls’ tennis team split its two matches, both of which were against LancasterLebanon League opponents this past week. The Braves poured it on against Elco on Monday afternoon, posting a 6-1 victory. Two days later, again playing on their home courts, they fell to Lancaster Catholic by a 5-2 margin. With the loss to Catholic, the Braves fell to 2-1 in the league while suffering their first loss of the year (61 overall). The Crusaders stayed unbeaten (5-0) in league play Kiersten Ann Winey and Caroline Bragg topped their opponents at number three doubles by an 8-3 margin for one of PV’s two team points. Jessica Hurst won her singles match over Katie Hollister 6-1, 2-0 (retired) for a point there. Despite the 6-1 margin of victory over Elco, the Raiders put up a good fight in that match. The first doubles went to Adalie Clemmer and Hope Fisher of Pequea by a close 8-5 score. Hurst and Kalexsia Lassak won the second doubles 8-4 while Winey and Bragg cruised to an 8-1 win. At number one singles Grace Grinder grinded out a tough victory for Elco’s lone team point. She eked out a win over Clemmer 7-5, 3-6, 11-9. Lassak’s victory wasn’t easy, batPhoto by Bob Diller Pequea Valley’s Kyle Ebersol carded a round of 92 to finish 11th tling Ali Bender for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the individual scoring and help the Braves to a first-place fin- comeback win. Winey (6-1, 6-2) and Hurst (6-0, ish in last Tuesday’s Section Four match Royal Oaks.
6-3) won in straight sets. Scoring for the Braves against the Crusaders was Winey and Bragg with an 8-3 doubles win and Jessica Hurst, who was up 6-1, 2-0 when Katie Hollister retired. GOLF At Honey-brook last Tuesday, Pequea’s Josiah Nissley fired the lowest round of the day with a 73. Their 331 team score, however, was four strokes behind Lancaster Mennonite but good enough to defeat AnnvilleCleona (373), Lancaster Country Day (379), Lebanon Catholic (998) and Lebanon (999), moving their section mark to 21-4. The Blazers, who had three of the top four scores of the day,
sit on top at 23-2. Backing Nissley was Tyrell Stoltzfus (80), Parker Allain (85) and Kyle Ebersol (93). BOYS’ SOCCER With only two goals allowed in six matches, the boys’ soccer team has stayed in first place atop the standings of Section Four. This past week the Braves (6-0-0) blanked both Annville-Cleona and Lebanon Catholic, improving their goals for/goals against ratio to 43-2 on the year. Goalie Nehemiah Glick has enjoyed watching his teammates score so many goals while he has recorded four shutouts. “He has had the majority of the minutes in goal,” said head coach Peter Bennett. “Last year was his first year playing goalie. Our hope is that he keeps improving as a junior. I think the fact that the defenders in front of him are so experienced gives him a lot of confidence.” Speaking of experience, the Braves
are returning a number of players from the 2018 squad that went 14-42 and qualified for the District Three Class-AA playoffs. “We have nine starters back from last year’s team,” Bennett pointed out. “We have 11 seniors on our roster and they bring a lot of maturity and familiarity, which are paying off for us this year. “They know each other’s habits and tendencies. They work well with each other. It makes my job easier, so we talk tactics and strategy for who we’re playing.” The comfort with which they play on the pitch led to a 6-0 victory over Annville-Cleona on the road Monday afternoon. Bennett said that despite the strong start, he and the Braves were not taking this Section Four opponent lightly. “They had actually lost to Lancaster Catholic 1-0 in overtime a few days before we played them,” he explained. “We wanted to get in there and play our game, take care of

to 3-1-0 (3-0-0 league). Just like the Braves versus Beavers boys’ match, the game was 7-0 at the half. The big scorer on the day was Kayla Keen, who not only scored three times, she dished out three assists as well. Megan Yoder and Alison Hershey each tallied two goals. Elena Esh, Sierra Fisher and Jenna Rishel, who also had an assist, netted one goal each. Maria Weaver chipped in with an assist as the Braves finished with 16 shots on goal. FOOTBALL In a Friday night Section Four clash at Kinzers, the Braves’ offense was unable to get in the groove as the Cedars earned a 45-0 victory, dropping the Braves to 0-3 on the season. Isaiah Rodriguez tossed a pair of touchdown passes as he completed eight of 14 for 132 yards. The Cedars’ signal caller also scored three rushing touchdowns as he gained 35 yards on three carries. The Cedars put up 20 points in the first quarter. Rodriguez lunged across the goal line from one yard out; Joe Mejias Rios scored from nine yards out; and Rodriguez tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Alex Rufe. Rufe also caught a 29-yard scoring pass from Rodriguez in the second quarter. Miguel Mejias-Knox ran back an interception 60 yards to make it 33-0 at halftime. The Braves offense did pick up eight first downs on the night. The passing game featured Collin Bailey completing eight passes for 74 yards. Jonathan Carter was the receiving end of two Bailey passes for 40 yards. Andrew Weaver caught a 23-yard pass.

Elijah Elkins made it 3-0 before halftime. Nevin Stoltzfus came in and added two more goals in the second half. His goals were sandwiched around one by senior Josh Gingerich, who also had two assists on the day. “Nevin Stoltzfus scored two goals,” Bennett remarked. “He’s one of our first guys off the bench. He has a good work ethic and has great speed. He fits in well as a sophomore, where it might be intimidating coming in with all the seniors.” Also getting into the scoring was sophomore Dylan Ratjavong with an assist. Two days later, the Braves dominated Lebanon Catholic 10-0, recording 18 shots on goal. It was a 5-0 match by the 12-minute mark. Hershey had two goals plus an assist. Gingerich, Ratjavong and Elkins, who also had one assist, scored early goals also. Johan Gomez-Mendez and Jeriah Peterson scored one goal each, making it 7-0 by halftime. Mason Smucker and Christian Zapata each tallied one goal while an own goal by the Beavers padded the PV scoring. Wade Stoltzfus and Ryan Stoltzfus were each credited with an assist. Itegi Jazae played goalie in this one, making two saves in the shutout. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Pequea girls came off the pitch having convincingly defeated Lebanon Catholic 10-1 on Wednesday. for use in his camps. While giving a nod to the past, Luttmann said the program will also look at the present and exploring new avenues God is providing for BVI in ways to adapt materials. “A woman contacted me saying she would like to create a podcast using our stories,” he said. “God is giving us an opportunity to reach more children with the Gospel with all the ways we have of communicating today. We are exploring those opportunities, but with the consistent message that there is one way to salvation - through Jesus Christ.” BVI is a nonprofit organization overseen by a nine-member board. Readers who would like to attend the banquet may register at www.biblevisuals.org/banquet or call 717-859-1131. There is a nominal cost for those age 4 and up to attend the banquet. Banquet sponsorship opportunities are available. BVI asks those who would like to attend to register by Thursday, Oct. 10.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will join Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day on Saturday, Sept. 21, where participating venues will open their doors for free to those who download a branded ticket. The theme of this year’s event is the Smithsonian Year of Music, an institutionwide initiative celebrating the Smithsonian’s musical collections and resources, as well as music-related programming. The Smithsonian Year of Music crosses disciplines, bringing together music-related resources in art, history, culture, science, and education. Those wishing to attend Museum Day may learn more and download a Museum Day ticket at www.Smithsonian.com /MuseumDay. Each ticket grants the ticket holder and one guest free access to any participating venue on Sept. 21. One ticket is permitted per email address. The list of the more than 1,500 participating museums, zoos, and cultural centers from across the United States may be found at www.smithsonian.com/museumday/search. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to a collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a vast library and archives, a working restoration shop, an education center and programs, a museum store, and special events and exhibits. A Smithsonian affiliate, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History, with the active support of the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
