Girl Scouts Thrive In PV BY ANN MEAD ASH
“This is the first year in a while that we’ve had a Junior level, which is great because we are growing and girls are staying in the program,” said Katie Knaub, who leads Girl Scout troops 70520 and 70521 in the Pequea Valley area with Mel Infantolino. On Aug. 8, a number of girls in the troops bridged to the next level, using the bridge at Denlinger Pond, adjacent to the Paradise Township Building on Route 30, Paradise. Knaub noted that although not all the girls bridged to another level, they all participated in the celebration by receiving their end-of-year awards. Girls participating in the ceremony were Chloe Wilson, Ellie Knaub, Juliana Fieldsa, Cora Knaub, Keiryn Shaffer, Kailey Lee, Morgan Roten, and Riley Infantolino. This is Knaub’s fourth year overseeing the troops. Currently, Knaub works with Troop 70520 made up of Daisies, who are in kindergarten and first grades, See Girl Scouts pg 5

PTO Plans Third Annual Mum Sale BY ANN MEAD ASH
wo years ago, when Paradise Elementary School PTO held its first mum sale, the group purchased 100 plants to sell. In 2020, the group increased that number to 250 and sold them all. This year, the PTO plans to purchase 300 mums in a variety of colors. “We will have burgundy, red, orange, yellow, purple, and white,” said PTO president Christy Fieldsa. The third Paradise Elementary School PTO mum sale will take place
T
on Friday, Oct. 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9 to 11 a.m. Plants will be available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Mums will be sold at two locations along Route 30. One will be the semi-circle driveway in the front of The Factory Ministries at the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The second location is a lot adjacent to the pond at the Paradise Township Building, 2 Township Drive, Paradise. PTO vice president Katie Knaub encouraged those wishing to
purchase flowers to come early to obtain the colors they are looking for. Fieldsa noted that many customers have a color preference based on the hues of their house or landscape design, so sale organizers work hard to provide a number of colors from which to choose. The plants will be tagged with the name of the color and in pots and ready to plant. The PTO sets a nominal price for the plants and makes just under $2 on each pot it sells. The group is hoping to raise more than $500
from this year’s sale. Funds will be used to help cover the costs of classroom supplies, field trips, and family fun nights, which are offered free of charge to the families. Fun nights might include movies and hot cocoa, crafts, or roller skating. Other Paradise Elementary PTO officers include secretary Shanon Passmore and treasurer Krystle Shaffer. Readers who would like to know more about PTO activities may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on “PTO” on the “Parents & Families” tab under “Paradise Elementary.”

and we are looking forward to large, safe crowds,” said Overly, who noted that the best part of her work with the fair is seeing children and others earn prizes. “When the kids work on something - a craft, Legos model, or raising an animal - and they bring it to the fair … (and) when they get a prize, it is so rewarding for us to see,” she shared. The 2021 New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 2, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. which will begin at 7 p.m. The Spectacle of Bands competition, which is part of the parade, will be held, with the 2019 Cup of Honor winner Downingtown High School leading the parade. The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, a long john eating contest, a horseshoe pitching contest, a pedal power contest for children, pet and baby parades, games, and a variety of food vendors. The animal competitions will be held in the tents on Fulton Street. Swine will be judged on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 5:30 p.m. Goats will be judged at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, and sheep will be judged the same day at 4 p.m. The competition is open to 4-H and FFA members from Lancaster County. Safety will be a priority for this year’s Farmers Fair. “We want to encourage people to
be respectful of others’ space,” said fair president Paulene Redding. Overly added that the number of sanitation stations available at the fair will be increased. She also requested that those bringing exhibits to the New Holland Farmers Day Association building, located at 101 W. Franklin St., New Holland, do so between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sept. 28 to help avoid crowding. Redding has been handling the parade for five years. This year, she is changing up the lineup based on requests from high school bands that travel to take part. “It’s late (when the parade is over) for high school kids that come from a great distance,” explained Redding, who will intersperse high school bands with floats and other participants in the first half of the parade. Both Redding and Overly noted a need for volunteers for the event. “A significant

and Brownies, who are in second and third grade. Her troop meets on Tuesday evenings at the Girl Scout Cabin in Paradise Park, 6 London Vale Road. Infantolino works with Troop 70521 consisting of Juniors, who are in fourth and fifth grades, and Cadettes, girls in sixth grade, on Monday evenings at the cabin. Knaub said that multi-level troops allow Scouting organizations to utilize the volunteers they have more efficiently. Knaub plans for her group to participate in programs with the Lancaster County Parks Department. Badges she hopes to focus on will concern ecology and hiking. Girls who have reached the Junior and Cadette levels work with their leaders to plan their own path. “They will be brainstorming their own activities,” said Knaub. “Girls Scouts have just come out with new badges,” she added, noting that Math in Nature is one of those. “They might have interest in exploring new badge opportunities,” she said. In addition, the troops will take part in a special event with other troops from the surrounding areas. “Our service unit, which is a conglomeration of troops in Conestoga Valley and Garden Spot, along with Pequea Valley, will hold a camping day in Paradise Park at the end of October,” said Knaub, who noted that activities will include the basics of setting up tents, starting fires, and knowing what to take along. “We typically plan a large encampment, but that was canceled,” explained Knaub, who added that leaders wanted to give the girls a taste of what real camping is like.

torical Society was held in May 1958. Eleven years later, the society purchased the Hans Herr House. Built in 1719 by Christian and Anna Herr, the Herr House is not only the oldest surviving house in Lancaster County, but it is also known as the oldest original Mennonite meeting house in the Western Hemisphere. Restoration and archaeological excavation on the house began in 1971, and the site was officially opened to the public in 1974. Since the 1990s, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has hosted an annual Maize and Snitz Festival at the Herr House & Museum. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at the museum were able to take a year and a half to redefine the 2021 Maize and Snitz Market Fair. The idea for the upcoming event is to offer attendees a more complete understanding of what Colonial life would have been like for the Herr family. “This is part of the Herr family’s story, but this is also part of the story that related to hundreds if not thousands of people when they came to America,” explained Jason Stetler, digital and communi-

Pequea Valley’s Wade Stoltzfus fends off Trinity’s Seth Pastor as he takes control of the ball for the Braves during their 1-1, nonleague tie at home on September 9.
The Pequea Valley golf team improved to 14-2 on the year with an impressive victory at Crossgates on Thursday, September 9. The Braves defeated Lancaster-Lebanon League foes Annville-Cleona, Lancaster Country Day, Lancaster Mennonite and Lebanon. The Pequea putters posted a 332 score - a decisive 37 strokes ahead of second-place Annville (369), despite Annville golfer Reagan Flynn finishing with the best indi-
vidual score of 78. LCD finished at 374 while Mennonite (397) and Lebanon (493) rounded out the rest. Kyle Ebersol and Matt Lapp led the Braves, both finishing with 79’s. For Lapp, the 79 was a season best so far. Cole Stoltzfus also had a season best, shooting an 82 to finish fifth overall. Pequea senior Easton Herr recorded a 92. Pequea Valley’s Kyle Ebersol (left) and Matt Lapp both carded rounds of 79 to finish tied for second place in the individual scoring and lead the Braves to a 4-0 sweep in the Section Four match at Crossgates on September 9.
“For a while we were in control,” said Bennett. “Legs got heavy for the last 10 or 15 minutes - probably from the Trinity game going double overtime. Wyomissing scored two late goals for the win. It was a good end-to-end match.” The Braves upped their record to 3-1-1 and to 1-0 in the league with their Section Four triumph over Northern Lebanon on Monday, September 13. Ratjavong scored two goals within a span of five minutes in the second half, giving PV a 2-0 victory. The Brave’s goaltending has been primarily handled by senior Jazae Marina-Itegi “Jazae got some experience as a sophomore, but not that much last year,” Bennett explained. “Gabe McDonald has been getting some time as well.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The Braves’ tenacious efforts netted a 1-0 Section Four overtime victory on Monday, September 13, at

to 3-1-1 on the year, including an LL League victory on Monday, September 13. On Thursday, September 9, the Braves played to a 1-1 draw with Trinity on the road. Nevin Stoltzfus scored with five minutes left in regulation to draw the count even. The two teams played the extra periods with no scoring. Pequea was coming off a 5-0 victory at Eastern York - an early-season non-league victory on September 4. In that high-scoring contest, Nevin Stoltzfus finished with four goals. Peyton Leitch added a pair of assists. Dylan Ratjavong also netted one goal while Sam Arena and Joey Pereira each recorded an assist. “Dylan Ratjavong has been great for us, turning defense into offense,” said head coach Peter Bennett. “We’ve used him in the middle as well. “Peyton Leitch came back from a broken ankle last season,” continued the coach. “He’s a center midfielder, but we’ve used him up with Nevin to support him.” Whether, Leitch, Stoltzfus or Ratjavong were involved, there was plenty of scoring in Saturday’s nonleague match with Wyomissing. The Braves came up on the short end of a 4-3 final on the road. “It was a good match between two teams that qualified for district playoffs for the past two seasons,” Bennett said. “We got out to an early lead - Peyton scored off a rebound. They went up 2-1 with two quick goals. “Nevin scored two minutes before the half,” Bennett added. Stoltzfus had provided the assist on Leitch’s goal while Ratjavong assisted on the equalizer by Stoltzfus. Leitch gave the Braves the lead 15 minutes into the second half.

of their goal. The ball came out and Caroline Fisher played it in toward Sierra Fisher, who put it in for the score.” The Braves were coming off a forgettable loss to Wyomissing two days earlier. The Spartans posted an 8-1 victory. Morris addressed the level of play in the Northern Lebanon game as a positive response to the lopsided defeat. “After the Wyomissing game, we were back to what I’ve been expecting from the team,” he commented. “I really hope that gets us going again.” The victory ended a two-game losing streak, which began with a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to Trinity on September 9. “We played very well against Trinity,” Morris said. “They’re always a strong team. “We were winning 1-0 with about nine minutes left,” he continued. “They scored a tying goal and another goal with a second left.” Caroline Fisher scored Pequea’s goal with an assist from Morgan Graham. Morris was asked about the contributions on the defensive end of the pitch. The team did lose junior Brooke Graham to a serious injury. “She had been a starter since her freshman year,” Morris noted. “That was a tough injury. But Breanne Beiler, a sophomore, has stepped up and done really well. Deena Stoltzfus, another senior, is a strong center back who’s a fouryear starter.” Speaking of experienced players on defense, the Braves return senior goalie Madison Weaver. FOOTBALL In a high-scoring non-league game at home, the Pequea Valley football team lost to Kutztown 7637 on Friday, September 10. Peyton Temple showed off his skills again, throwing for three touchdowns as he completed eight passes for 171 yards. The Braves (0-2) in fact grabbed an early lead as Temple connected with Dominic Wallace for a 47-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Temple himself converted on the two-point conversion. Kutztown scored 24 unanswered points on three touchdowns, each with a two-point PAT’s, to make it 24-8. The Braves responded in the first quarter with an Orlando Stoltzfus rushing touchdown and Jonathan Carter’s PAT kick to cut the deficit to 24-15. Kutztown went on to score 28 unanswered points before Temple’s 17-yard scoring toss to Wallace stopped the bleeding. The Pequea defense was victimized by a 50-yard rushing touchdown, but the special teams gained the points right back on the 55-yard kickoff return by Stoltzfus, who ran in the twopoint PAT himself. Carter also caught a 50-yarder from Temple and watched as the quarterback scored the two-point PAT.
