Covering Each School In Prayer BY ANN MEAD ASH

If the words “moms in prayer” call forth a picture of mothers of schoolage children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, & Berks Counties Moms in

Prayer International. Forry went on to note that groups are not necessarily church based. “We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. As schools begin to open up again - in a variety of formats, including public, private, cyber, homeschool, and hybrid models - Moms in Prayer groups are finding creative ways to meet - virtually or together with masks and social distancing or in See Moms In Prayer pg 10

Paradise Elementary School PTO president Christy Fieldsa will oversee the group’s annual mum sale on Oct. 2 and 3.

Paradise PTO Plans Mum Sale Christy Fieldsa, Paradise Elementary School PTO president, knows a bit about plants, and she is utilizing that knowledge to help out with the PTO’s second mum sale. “We will have pink, orange, and yellow, and we will have both early and late blooming plants,” explained Fieldsa. The second Paradise Elementary School PTO mum sale will take place on Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. Plants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Last year, the mums were sold at the school, but logistics made that difficult this year, so two nearby locations along Route 30 were selected. “The Factory Ministries has graciously allowed us to use their front lawn,” said Fieldsa. The Factory is located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The semi-circle driveway in the front will make it easier for

those purchasing mums to pull in and out. The second location is a lot adjacent to the pond at the Paradise Township Building, 2 Township Drive, Paradise. Based on the 2019 fundraiser, Fieldsa anticipates more sales this year. “Last year, we put it together a week ahead of time,” she said. “We had 100 mums, and we sold them all.” This year, with more advance notice, Fieldsa plans to have at least 200 plants available. “When we get them they’re not quite opened,” Fieldsa said of the mums. “They’re just starting to open.” Fieldsa said the plants are also tagged with the name of the color and in pots and ready to plant. The PTO sets the plants at a nominal price and makes $2 on each pot it sells, and the group is hoping to raise $400 this year. “We purposely do it early enough so the buds aren’t open yet so the people get the whole range of the flower,” she said. “We did not want to sell

mums with buds that are already open that won’t last (as long).” The mum sale raises funds for the PTO, which then helps cover the costs of classroom supplies and virtual field trips, among other expenses. Paradise Elementary principal Rick Esche said that school began at the end of August, with students in the building five days a week. Currently, the school is at about 60% student capacity, with the other 40% taking advantage of one of several other options. “There’s a hybrid option online with teachers here (at the school),” said Esche, “and a virtual option that’s more like a cyber school.” Other Paradise Elementary PTO officers include vice president Katie Knaub, secretary Shanon Passmore, and treasurer Broc Passmore. Readers who would like to know more about PTO activities may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on the “PTO” tab under “Paradise Elementary.”

Area Moms in Prayer International coordinators are Lynn Herr (left) and Mary Beth Will (center) gather with regional coordinator Sue Forry (right). Moms in Prayer groups meet all over the county to cover schoolchildren in prayer.

On-course refreshments will be served throughout the day and door prizes will be offered, including gift cards to Walmart and Dutch-Way Farm Market and Restaurant in Gap. “We have a lot of gift certificates for hair salons and eating places,” said Esworthy, adding that one of the prizes will be a television. This year’s goodie bags will feature some additional gifts. “We always give a goodie bag to each golfer. This year, it will contain a mask (made of) material with a golf pattern and a bottle of hand sanitizer,” Esworthy said. “There is always a towel and a sleeve of balls and hard candy to (enjoy) while they (play).” Prior to scheduling this year’s tournament, organizers wanted to make sure that the event would be safe for all golfers. “We made a trip over to the golf course and talked to the manager,” Esworthy reported. “There were golfers there, and (the golf course staff members) are following all the guidelines that are given to them by the Department of State.” She said that organizers expect a good turnout for this year’s event. “We usually have around 45 golfers and we are already up to 40, and we are happy about that,” noted Esworthy. The upcoming tournament is for amateur golfers only. No prizes will be awarded to professionals. Proceeds will go directly to See Library pg 5

EPC has not been immune to the tough decisions that we’ve all had to make during this pandemic. With our highest priority being to maintain the best local news coverage, we have made some changes that you will begin to see starting this week. To that end, this community paper will be distributed to your household every two weeks, encompassing the entire coverage area. While you will not receive the printed edition each week, we invite you to visit us online at townlively.com/read and sign up for our weekly email newsletters for fresh content EVERY WEEK. It is absolutely paramount that we support our local businesses by shopping locally, eating locally, and utilizing our local service industries. Additionally, our nonprofit organizations play a pivotal role in filling the needs within our communities. A Taste Of New Holland BY ANN MEAD ASH

ELANCO-area residents were understandably disappointed when the New Holland Fair was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions; however, a few resourceful citizens have organized outdoor events that can be held safely at the time the fair is usually held. Nick Good, office manager with Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR), began talking to GSFR director of development Daryl Groff, along with Mitch and Gina Dissinger, owners of Lickity Split in New Holland. “It started as an idea to bring the community together,” shared Good. “We can’t have a fair this year, but we would like to do something.” That something will be Taste of New Holland Food Fest, a food truck gathering that will be held in the parking lot at 328 E. Main St., New Holland, the new facility for JM Lapp and The Silk Mill on Main. The twoday extravaganza will take place Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event planning committee includes Good, Mitch and Gina, Katie Adams, Steve Loewen, and Bryant Glick. Danielle Landis created the logo. “We have a pretty good list of (vendors),” reported Good, who noted that the GSFR trailer will be there to sell oyster sandwiches. He also listed Hen House Grilling, Nice Size Fries, the local hot dog cart called the Crazy Train, and Meadow Creek Barbecue Supply. “The Lions Club will sell ham sandwiches, and Yoder’s will sell whoopie pies,” added Good, who noted that Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Lorah’s Chocolates from Bowmansville will also be offered. The New Holland United Methodist Church will have a table, and Lickity Split will sell

Forry’s favorite format, porch praying. “ We do social distancing on a porch, and we gather and pray,” explained Forry. “We are just about prayer,” she added. “Our vision is to see every school in the world covered in prayer.” Forry explained that meetings are one hour long and follow a schedule. “We start on time, and we end on time,” said Forry, who noted that a designated format helps keep groups on task. “We call it the four steps of prayer,” she explained. “It begins with praising God for who He is.” Forry said that time is followed by silent confession and then a time of giving thanks to God for what He has done. Lastly, there is a time for intercession, where moms pick one child of their own to pray for, but the group also prays for teachers, school concerns, and the Moms in Prayer ministry. “I told my ladies last week that perhaps the most important part is at the very end when the prayer sheet says to remember that what is prayed in the group stays in the group,” shared Forry. “We absolutely stress confidentiality.”

Moms in Prayer meets safely and in keeping with social distancing guidelines on porches to pray for children in a variety of circumstances.

Moms in Prayer began in California in 1984 and is now active in 140 countries. Forry believes groups in Lancaster County have been active for at least 30 years. “It was formerly called Moms in Touch, but they had a name change because when you try to translate Moms in Touch to other (languages) it does not translate well,” said Forry, who added that the group is not just for mothers of school-age children. “We are a women’s ministry, so this is also for aunts and grandmas, and for any woman who feels compelled to pray for women in schools to impact them for Christ,” she said. According to Forry, Moms in Prayer International has several levels of leadership, including a state coordinator, regional coordinators, and area coordinators. In Lancaster County, Mary Beth Will oversees Warwick, Manheim Central, Donegal, and Elizabethtown school districts, while Lynn Herr oversees Columbia, Hempfield, Penn Manor, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Solanco school districts. Forry oversees any districts that do not have an area coordinator, working with local leadership in that area. “We are praying for God to raise up more area coordinators to fill in the areas that have none,” said Forry. The traditional Moms in Prayer group prays for a single school, but there are also grandma groups, churchbased groups, homeschool groups, military groups, prison-focused groups, and working moms groups. There are also language-based groups that speak a language other than English. “We want women to be able to pray in their native language,” said Forry. Another group focuses on prodigal children. “A huge See Prayer pg 11

ice cream creations. Good said that organizers focused on local vendors. “We started with New Holland and then reached out to the general ELANCO area,” he said. “It’s a great community event, and we want to support the community businesses.” The first-time event has been planned with safety in mind. “We encourage masks and social distancing,” said Good, noting that the choice of a large parking lot was intentional. “We feel good about that,” he said. Because it is inevitable that area seniors and others may want to sit to eat, Good said organizers hope to have four or five tables, with local Scouts or youths from another organization available to disinfect tables after each use. “With (seniors), we want to make

sure there is a place to sit, and we want to follow the rules,” said Good. “We don’t want to encourage too much socializing.” Portable toilets with adjacent handwashing stations will also be on site. Organizers wanted the Food Fest to benefit a local nonprofit, and the issues associated with COVID-19 had caused GSFR difficulties with fundraising. “We’re going to make this a fundraiser for the fire company and an event that everybody can come out to,” said Good. “(Attendees) can enjoy food and the profits and nonprofits can all put money back in to benefit the fire company.” Good explained that each vendor was asked to contribute 15% from the profits of the event. Nonprofit organizations that take part will be asked to put out a boot or

helmet to accept donations. “If anyone wants to donate more, that’s fantastic, but we realize that other businesses are hurting as well,” said Good. The event was timed to cover two of the nights when the fair would have been held and to coincide with the New Holland Youth Livestock Exposition on Oct. 2. “We have been pleased with the community response,” said Good. “A lot of people have said they’d like to get out for a little bit and enjoy some good food and do something different than the routine they have been following,” he added. Readers who would like to know more may search for “Taste of New Holland Food Fest” on Facebook.

Prayer from pg 10 part of our ministry is supporting women who are standing in the gap and interceding for their children,” said Forry. Women who are interested in joining a local group should visit www.MomsInPrayer.org and click on “Get Involved” and then “Join a Group.” From there, Forry says to click on “USA” and then complete and submit the form so a leader can get in touch.

At the beginning, the problem was transportation. Rita Boer, practice manager for Community Services Group’s (CSG) Lancaster and Dauphin outpatient programs, said that transportation to mental health services in Lancaster was identified as an issue in Paradise prior to 2016 and in New Holland during the next few years.

“Our main office is in Lancaster, and we were hearing how (transportation) was a barrier for people who don’t live in the city … and some were not comfortable coming into the city because they were more familiar with their own communities,” explained Boer. “We were hearing that was a barrier … and that there was a high demand and high need for mental health services, so we said, ‘Let’s do what we can to bring

Preheat oven to 350o F. Prepare a 9x13” pan with parchment paper, sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. Spread oats (and if using nuts) on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes or until toasted, stirring halfway through for even toasting. While oats are in oven, in a saucepan over medium heat, add butter, brown sugar, honey, and peanut butter. Stir occasionally until melted and sugar is dissolved. Take off heat and add in vanilla extract and salt, stirring until combined. After oats are toasted, pour them into a large bowl. Add shredded coconut to the oats. Pour hot butter/sugar mixture over top and stir to combine. Let set for 10-15 minutes before adding in chocolate chips. Stir in chocolate chips and pour mixture into prepared 9x13” pan. Using the back of a measuring cup, press mixture into pan. Place in refrigerator until hardened and cooled. Once cool, cut into bars. services into these communities.’” In Paradise, the Together Initiative Network (TIN) had identified the need for mental health services to be provided in the area. “TIN looks at whole community, and that group saw a need for mental health services,” said Boer, who noted that office space was available for a counselor to meet with patients in the Together Community Center (TCC). In New Holland, CrossNet executive director Meredith Dahl first contacted CSG when area students were waiting up to six months to receive services. Leanna Hassler, who received her master’s degree in clinical counseling from Alvernia University, was the first CSG employee to provide mental health services at TCC. Hassler, who has worked with children and families using ecosystemic structural family therapy, worked closely with the advocates at The Factory Ministries, which is located at TCC, to connect with patients. In 2018, Hassler brought those same services to CrossNet, but she was soon joined in working outpatient settings by a second therapist. “We needed part of our clinicians time to be in the main office to help keep them connected to what we were doing in the larger clinic,” said Boer, who noted that about six
