Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) marching band featured twirler Emilie Thibeault likes to keep her competitive edge sharp. To do that, she practices almost daily, works weekly with her coach, and tries to take part in at least one competition per month. Emilie’s most recent achievement occurred when she brought home four gold medals, a silver medal, and two bronze medals from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics held in Greensboro, N.C., from July 26 through Aug. 2. Emilie won gold in the showtwirl; two-baton competition, for which she

qualified one day and competed the second day; the three-baton competition; and a multi-baton category, where she was required to start with one baton and then pick up a second and a third. The multi-baton routine is also called a feature twirler solo. Emilie’s silver medal was awarded for All-Around Twirling Champion, and she received a bronze for a solo performance and another for a strut routine where she was not allowed to release the baton at any time. “Strut is like a dance based on a (configuration) on the floor,” explained Emilie. Emilie’s mother, Heather, explained that Emilie won two of her gold medals for performing her 2018 PVHS marching band routine. That routine is choreographed by her coach, Wendy

Rhoads of Ab-Salute Twirling. Her music for that event is coordinated by Pequea Valley Middle School band director Jim Ackerman, and she is introduced at the beginning of the recording by announcer Kent Haberern. Emilie and Heather noted they are especially thankful for Ackerman’s help with the music. The routine she has been performing at competitions is based on music from the 2018 marching band show. “Ackerman created a mix of ‘Shrek’ and some of the stand tunes,” explained Emilie, who added that the competition specifies certain music requirements, including the school fight song. The coordinated music must also be set up to meet time requirements set by the competition. Emilie also triumphed in two-baton See Champion Twirler pg 2

in a Pennsylvania state competition held at the California University of Pennsylvania, where she was named champion in May. She was named North Atlantic Regional Champion in two- and threebaton at Beaver Valley Falls, also in May. In July, she was the Twirling Unlimited International two-baton champion in Canton, Ohio. She was named Miss Summertime at the same competition. Emilie has begun practicing her routine for the next round of competitions. She will be marching and performing with the band during the fall months, with her first competition of the upcoming season in December. She hopes to perform the new competition routine during the halftimes of PVHS basketball games to give her a chance to practice the routine in front of an audience. In February 2020, Emilie will take part in the High School Classic at Twirl Mania, which will be held in the ESPN building at Disney World in Orlando,

a competition she won in 2016. As a junior at PVHS, Emilie is starting to look ahead to higher education. “I want to twirl at my college,” she said, noting she is considering several vocations in the medical field. She and Rhoads have begun discussing colleges that would fulfill her needs. Heather noted that both partial and full scholarships are awarded to twirlers. Heather noted that the family is thankful to all those who support Emilie in her twirling endeavors as she and Emilie’s father, Kevin, coordinate Emilie’s schedule and transport her to competitions. “She couldn’t do this without … Wendy and Mr. Ackerman,” said Heather, noting that specialty coaches, relatives of other twirlers who cheer Emilie on, and other community members have all made contributions in some way. “It makes (Emilie) a stronger twirler,” noted Heather.

Large items and specialty items will be sold at 10:30 a.m. Homemade bread will be sold at 10:30 a.m. as well. Baked goods made by children who attend the fair may be entered to win a cash prize. Children may enter a cookie, a cookie bar, a pie, or a cake between 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. to be judged and then auctioned at 11:30 a.m. The special baked goods sale gives children who attend camp at Woodcrest a way to help support the ministry. Gift certificates will be auctioned at 2 p.m., and remaining food will be auctioned at 3 p.m. Kids Camp Bonanza activities will include a chance to try a sling shot, archery, wood burning, rocket launching, and more. A doughnut-eating contest will be held at 11 a.m. A nominal fee will be charged to ride the barrel train. A bounce house will be on-site throughout the event. Breakfast items will be sold beginning at 8 a.m. Bidders who register prior to 8:45 a.m. will receive a free cup of coffee

and a doughnut. Other breakfast items will include pancakes, sausage, quiche, and juice. At 11 a.m., lunch items including barbecued chicken, a baked potato bar, cheeseburgers, french fries, ice cream, beverages, and more will be available. This year, organizers will offer an opportunity to help raise $7,000 for auction special projects, including a Steiner mower, computers, and a post hole digger. The annual benefit auction attracts hundreds of visitors. Funds raised by the auction are used to offset expenses and help keep camp fees affordable for families. All families that send their children to Woodcrest will benefit from the fundraiser because summer camp prices are set at 75 percent of actual costs. Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides summer camp experiences yearly for more than 1,500 children on 110 acres of woodland. A family campground and yearround retreat facility are also available. Readers who would like to donate to the auction may call 717-738-2233. Donations will be accepted until the day of the auction. Cash donations will be accepted as well. More information about the camp may be found at www.woodcrestretreat.org.

Many of the churches of LampeterStrasburg (L-S) School District have combined forces to host two special events in previous years. Now, they have further collaborated to make Strasburg Day and CommUNITY 5K one great affair. “We’ve combined two events, and that’s very cool, said Bob Bronkema, pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. Willow Street Mennonite Church member Karen Bender, who has helped to organize the 5K race, noted that both events fell on the same day last year. The race was held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren (LCB), and Strasburg Day took place at the Strasburg Jaycee Park. Many people who participated in the 5K also planned to attend the Strasburg event. “During that day, the conversation started, Bender said. “It just made a whole lot of sense. The CommUNITY 5K was launched six years ago to raise money for the L-S Homes of Hope program. LCB has hosted the race for the past five years, and while the committee is sad to leave the 5K’s first home, it is excited to offer race participants a different course with new challenges. The sixth annual CommUNITY 5K and third annual Strasburg Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St., Strasburg. Registration for the 5K will be open from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and the race will start at 9 a.m. The course will primarily follow paved roads throughout the park and the borough and will be stroller-friendly. A cost has been set to participate in the 5K, with discounts for multiple people and for registering by Tuesday, Oct. 1. Registrations received after Oct. 1 will not be

guaranteed an event T-shirt. The proceeds from the 5K will be used to fund the continued operation of the house that opened since last year’s race. Homes of Hope provides transitional housing for families at risk of homelessness. “We have a house, and we put our first family through, Bender said. “We spent the first five years of the 5K preparing for this. Bender noted that the initial family has moved on to permanent housing and the organization is now seeking a second family. Refreshments and door prizes will be distributed after the race. The top male and female runners will receive gift cards, and the first finisher in every age group will be given a commemorative beverage glass. Race participants and spectators will be encouraged to stick around for Strasburg Day, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature children’s games, a bounce house, face painting, and a cornhole tournament. Piercing Word will give several performances of Scripture, with the first at 11:15 a.m. A chicken barbecue meal will be served at 11:30 a.m. and continue as supplies last. The organizers are planning for at least 450 people. Everything will be free of charge, and door prizes will be awarded. “The churches (of the Strasburg Ministerium) are able to bless the families and folks of the Strasburg community, said

After a long absence, the Soap Box Derby will return to Christiana on Saturday, Sept. 28. This year, young drivers ages 8 to 14 will race downhill on North Bridge Street in Christiana Borough. The event is being organized by several community organizations, including the Christiana Fire Company, as well as past participants. “There were a few members in the community who asked to bring it back because there were kids interested in doing it again,” race director John Moore said. “It’s a day for the kids. We’re going to have fun.” The race will involve closing North Broad Street from 6 a.m. to about 5 p.m. Action will start in the morning, with practice runs at about 9 a.m. There will be food available at the Christiana Lions Club Park, along with bounce houses and other attractions.

The race involves many volunteers, which was one reason it was discontinued after running from 2004 through 2010 with Jim Groff as race director. “I’m glad to see it coming back. It’s a great sport,” Groff said. This year some past drivers will come back to help with the event. One of them is Zachary Vandenbosch, who raced the Christiana Lions Club car in 2007 at the age of 11. “My big memory is putting (the race car) together with my dad. It really is a great family sport that brings everyone together,” Vandenbosch said. “I knew it was going to be hard for me to win because I was so big. I had a hard time getting down in the car.” Past races were qualifiers for the AllAmerican Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, but the cost of going on to the championship race proved to be prohibitive. year, the derby in Christiana is an independent race just for the fun of participants, and it will follow All-American rules. One of this year’s racers will be Joel Moats, who will turn 8 on race day. “I was thinking of a lot of birthday ideas. My mom thought of a great one, and it was this,” he said. “I want to have a good time doing the race.” The Moats family lives on Bridge Street at the bottom of the race course. “I feel that it is an awesome thing to bring back to Christiana. I’m so happy it is back,” said Joel’s mother, Holly Moats. Another racer is 8-year-old Bradley Gift, who likes the idea of going fast down the hill. “I feel like it’s just going to be fun,” he said. An awards banquet will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Christiana Fire Hall, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana. All drivers will receive a special recognition for their racing achievements. Specific details will be announced at a later date. Sponsorships are welcome. For more information, readers may contact Kim Moore at kmoore@christianafire.com.

“Night of Worship in the Park” is being offered by the World Mission Café, an outreach of Gap Community Church (GCC). The café is a nonprofit organization that serves beverages and snacks with all proceeds going to local and global missions. “We want to include the community and let them know who we are and what’s going on at World Mission Café,” said Monique Moreno, culture and events coordinator. “We just want to include everyone.” World Mission Café typically holds a worship service on the final Friday evening of each month at the café. The outdoor event this month is an effort to reach out to more people. “We do a night of worship here in the café monthly,” said Nate Hoskins, media coordinator. “It’s a part of what we do here in the café that we’re excited to take out into the community.” The evening will begin with games and free food, including hot dogs, chips and beverages, at 5 p.m. There will also be door prizes donated by local businesses. The worship portion of the program will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and will include music from GCC’s worship band and at least one other local band. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. “We’ll have a time of worship, a time of prayer and a time where we will be explaining some of the things the café does,” GCC pastor Cody Hall said. The evening will include information on the missions that World Mission Café supports locally, in the United States and

overseas, including missionaries in Kenya and the Middle East. Locally, café administrator Alli Zimmerman is a Young Life leader at Octorara Area Junior-Senior High School. Young Life is a Christian-based club offered for youths at the school. “It’s a ministry to reach high school kids, to be there for them when they need somebody and mentor them,” she said, adding that Young Life has been a beneficiary of the café’s proceeds. “The money we sent to Young Life was used to send 53 kids to camps over the summer.” World Mission Café, located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Starting in October, World Mission Café will expand its hours to also be open Wednesdays. Menu items include coffee, tea, specialty beverages, bagels, pastries and salads. There are no set prices, only suggested donations. Patrons are free to pay what they feel is appropriate, knowing that proceeds will go to mission projects. They are also encouraged to talk with café staff members about missions or make prayer requests. “We are tucked away back here, so we want to make people more aware of what we’re doing and what God’s doing,” Moreno said. For more information on World Mission Café, readers may visit www.facebook.com/worldmissioncafe or www.worldmissioncafe.org. More information on GCC can be found at www.gapcommunity.church.

Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Slated The 43rd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, known as the largest disaster relief auction in the world, will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $16 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate

relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding in response to disasters ranging from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. Pequea Valley Tennis Improves to 9-1 by Ara Grigorian

Pequea improved to 9-1 on the year with a pair of non-league victories as well as a 7-0 defeat of Section Four foe Columbia in girls’ tennis action. Coming off a 3-2 defeat of Penn Manor the previous Friday - a match in which Pequea won both doubles matches and saw Kiersten Ann Winey post a 62, 6-4 singles victory, the Braves visited Columbia on Monday afternoon. Juanita Reyes and Rebecca Cox cruised past Melanie Cruz and Rose Misciagna by an 8-0 score at first doubles. Adalie Clemmer and Hope

Fisher won their doubles by the same score. In singles, Maya Jaclyn Fritz (6-1, 60), Kalexsia Lassak (6-0, 6-0) and Caroline Bragg (6-0, 6-0) won the first three matches. Adalie Clemmer won 6-2, 6-1 and PV won the other match by forfeit. The Braves continued their winning ways with a Wednesday afternoon win at Linden Hall. In the nonleague match, Fisher and Jessica Hurst grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 win at first doubles. Bragg and Fritz went on to win 6-2, 6-1. Clemmer won the number one singles 6-4, 6-1 while Lassak fought a tough fight in the second singles, losing to Abrielle

Meckay 6-3, 6-4. The same was true with Winey’s effort at number three singles, finishing on the short end of 6-4, 7-5 sets. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Pequea Valley girls’ soccer team extended its winning streak in Lancaster-Lebanon League games to five with a 4-0 shutout of AnnvilleCleona on Tuesday. It was the Braves’ second shutout of the week as they improved to 5-0-0 in the L-L League and 5-2-0 overall. “So often when you look at statistics, you look at goals and assists,” said head coach Steve Morris, said when asked about the tough defense. The young defensive corps is made up of sophomore Liana Rogers, junior Abigail Stoltzfus, her sophomore sister Deena Stoltzfus and Brooke Graham. “Brooke is a starting freshman,” Morris said. “These girls have been doing well with Brooke and Abi in the middle. They’re all young and playing very well. That’s exciting because we have them for a few more years.” Wednesday’s Section Four win was 1-0 at halftime with Caroline Fisher’s goal late in the first half. Baleigh Henshaw’s two second-half goals were sandwiched around Megan Yoder’s goal the 63rd minute of the game.

Also contributing to the scoring were Kalyn Keen and Emily Diller with two assists each. “Kalyn Keen is a four-year starter,” Morris noted. “She is very communicative on the field. She’s a strong presence in the middle. “She’s tied with Henshaw for most goals,” he added. “We don’t have just two or three people on the team to carry us. We win as a group, a collective win front to back.” Maddy Weaver notched a shutout, making six saves in the game. Though the Braves were coming off a 4-0 loss to Wyomissing, they had wrapped up the previous week with a 1-0 shutout of Lancaster Country Day in a match that Morris said was controlled much more by PV than the score indicated. In fact, the Braves out-shot the Cougars 11-3. “The score made the game look closer than it was,” he said. “I think we had better play the whole game. We had more opportunities but didn’t finish them like we should have. We dominated in the second half yet it didn’t reflect in the score.” Weaver made two saves in this shutout. In an intense battle for first place Thursday night in Kinzers, Weaver compiled 14 saves. The Braves and the Crusaders played to a scoreless draw,

The Spartans were able to only get one shot past PV keeper Nehemiah Glick (7 saves) in a 1-0 victory. Nicholas Dowling scored in the 68th minute of the match, dropping Pequea to 7-1-0 overall. Glick had five saves in the game against LCD the previous afternoon. The Cougars clawed ahead for a 1-0 lead and held it until the midway point of the second half. Bennett Nordhoff scored the equalizer 21 minutes into the second half and gave the Braves a 2-1 lead eight minutes later. T.J. Hershey, who had scored in every game until the shutout at Wyomissing, sealed the victory in the 75th minute. “T.J. Hershey is our work horse up front for us,” head coach Peter Bennett said. “He has great speed and we’re able to play through balls to him. He brings good energy up top. Guys feed off his energy. Everyone up front is scrappy and they get after it.” Hershey scored the third goal of the game on Thursday as the Braves defeated the previously unbeaten Crusaders in a Section Four showdown. Pequea topped Lancaster Catholic 3-0 as Kyle Diller and Nevin Stoltzfus also scored. Glick earned another shutout with two saves on the night. Pequea improved to 6-0-0 while Catholic fell to 5-1-0. Village To Host Water Testing Program Announced Fall Fest

R048054

PUBLIC AUCTION COUNTRY BRICK 4 BDRM. DWL.

The Stoudtburg Village Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at South Village Circle, Reinholds. The event will include baked goods, games, story book characters, stage performances, face painting, a children’s costume contest, a bounce house, a scavenger hunt, and food. Attendees may visit the Stoudtburg Village Shops, Tiny Bites, and Village Haus Restaurant. The event will be co-hosted by Keystone Custom Homes and French Twist Events.

Penn State Extension has received funding from the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide no-cost drinking water testing to a limited number of homeowners in Lancaster County who use private water wells, springs or cisterns. The testing is for private water supplies that are actively being used for drinking water in the household or rental unit. Camps or seasonal households that are not continuously used are not eligible for this program. This testing is limited to the first 45 households using a private well, spring or cistern that register by visiting https://extension

.psu.edu/safe-drinking-water-workshop or by calling Penn State Extension toll-free at 877-345-0691. Once families register, they may pick up drinking water test kits at the Penn State Extension office in Room 140 of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Instructions on how to collect the water sample are included in the kit. The kits must be dropped off at the Extension office between 8:30 a.m. and noon on either Monday, Sept. 30, or Monday, Oct. 14. The exact drop-off date will be provided in the test kit. Individual water samples will be analyzed for numerous drinking water parameters, including total coliform bacteria,

E. coli bacteria, pH, total dissolved solids, hardness, alkalinity, corrosivity, nitrate, arsenic, copper and lead. Results will be available during two separate one-hour workshops to be held at 2 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Penn State Extension office in the Farm and Home Center. Participants will be asked to attend one of these workshops to get their water test results. A 30-minute presentation will also be given, including professional interpretation of results and information on how to solve drinking water problems. For more information, readers may contact the Lancaster Extension Office at 717394-6851 or lancasterext@psu.edu.
