A taste of ABBA
Choral benefit concert planned
BY ANN MEAD ASHThe interest of area residents is important to Sean Ammon, treasurer of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) choir. “Everyone loves to support what we do ... and that support gives us so many opportunities,” said Sean.
Each year, that support is evident when the family and friends of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) choir members attend the free yearly PVHS choral benefit concert. The 2023 event will be held at the school, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Sunday, Oct. 1. The event will feature food trucks, including Nano Burger and D&K Smokin’ BBQ, which will open at 5 p.m. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. A variety of prizes and giveaways will be featured throughout the evening.
For this year’s concert, director Nathan Bankert has chosen to spotlight “The Music of ABBA,” highlighting the Swedish pop group that formed in the 1970s. “I always try to pick a theme that will
be enjoyable, laid-back fun,” said Bankert, who noted that he believes the music will appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners. The first half of the concert will feature soloists, duets, and trios singing ABBA hits. The second half will present the full concert choir doing a 15-minute medley of songs from the show “Mamma Mia!” Among
A ride to work
BY ANN MEAD ASHAbout 200 individuals with disabilities participate with Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS), 144 Orlan Road, New Holland. Of those, 150 require transportation from multiple areas of the countyfrom Manheim to south of Quarryville. Organizing all those rides to work is Sandy Miller, transportation coordinator for LVS. The organization provides vocational services for individuals with disabilities.
About a year ago, Brian French, LVS director of programs, approached Miller with a request. “He said, ‘We are ramping up our program, and we need more cars,’”
recalled Miller, who has a connection to Concordville Nissan in Glen Mills.
Miller’s first move was to purchase three Rogues, but she went on to purchase a total of 12 vehicles to help participants to go into the community to work. “We have received grants for all these vehicles from multiple areas,” said Miller, who noted individual in grants of $25,000 helped her to purchase pre-owned certified vehicles.
“Concordville Nissan believes in what we do,” explained Miller.
“They work with us to keep (a vehicle purchase) within our grant budget.”

the students who will perform solos during the first half of the concert are choir secretary Madeline Heverin, who will sing “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do,” and choir president Nick Ammon, who will sing “The Winner Takes It All.”
Giveaways and prizes that will be available for participants to win include theme baskets made by
choir members. According to choir librarian Savannah Thomas, the sopranos are creating a European culture basket. The alto section is making a fall-themed basket, and the tenors are making a coffee basket. In addition, one of the sopranos will donate jewelry from her business. The bass section is appropriately creating a fishing
basket. Other prizes will include a hot air balloon ride, a weekend getaway, an archery class for two, an artificial flower arrangement, and a painting on canvas. Gift cards have been donated by local restaurants and businesses such as Stoltzfus Meats, Weis Markets, Shady Maple, and Escape Room. Past concerts have raised $2,500, See PVHS pg 2

but this year, Bankert would like to see the event bring in $3,000. “The funds raised will help offset costs for choral festival fees, field trips, and will help provide many other extraordinary musical experiences for every choral member,” he said.
The concert benefits choir members, but officers in the organization noted that they benefit from participating. Annika Hofstetter, vice president of the 90-member choir, said that she has been impressed with the effort her fellow choir members make. “The kids here have a passion and dedication to music you don’t see everywhere,” she said.
Heverin noted that the rewards of those efforts are realized gradually throughout the school year. “I like hearing growth in the choir as we continue,” she said. “It’s interesting to hear the difference from the benefit concert to the winter concert.”

nerstone’s executive director. “We have professional referees that come in, and our board members will set up the field.”
She noted that the Walk-Pull for Life formerly included a walk and a tug-of-war, but that evolved into a flag football event. “(Organizers) wanted to do something unique. You have to ‘pull’ the flags off to play flag football,” Martin explained.
Registration for the 5K walk will open at 8:30 a.m. Same-day registrations will be welcome. There will be an opening prayer by Adrian Young, board president, and a brief presentation about Cornerstone and its services. The walk, which will be contained within the
boundaries of the park, will begin at 9 a.m.
The 5K route is paved and stroller friendly. Prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and team of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships.
The chicken barbecue will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Meals will consist of a halfchicken, a roll with butter, applesauce, chips, a beverage and a cookie. There will also be a chicken-only option. The deadline to preorder chicken is Thursday, Sept. 28. Chicken will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day of the event.
A free Kids Zone will include barrel train rides, face painting and a balloon artist. Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary will present a show at 10 a.m.
Cornerstone serves as a resource for women experiencing unexpected pregnancies. It offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasound and prenatal and parenting incentive programs, among other services.
“We have rebranded,” said
Martin, noting that the announcement about the name change was made in July along with the unveiling of a new logo. “Our services have changed and evolved over the past couple of years. We felt that reproductive health encompasses everyone and more services rather than just pregnancy resources. We wanted it to be a little more medically focused and encompass more services and include men.”
The agency is currently building a mobile medical unit. “It’s like an RV with a doctor’s office in it - about the size of a UPS truck,” Martin noted. “It will offer the same services we offer (at the office), including pregnancy confirmation and ultrasound.”
To register for the walk or flag football tournament, visit www.pacornerstone.org and choose “About” and then “Events.” The deadline to enter a team into the tournament is Sept. 28. “We have Small Group Employment (SGE),” said Miller, who noted that the program takes a group of participants to perform tasks such as cleaning at a local business such as Conestoga Wood Specialties, Signature Custom Cabinetry, or Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. She added that LVS is looking for more local businesses to take part in this program.
A second program is called Community Participation Specialists (CPS). In CPS, participants visit nonprofits such as CrossNet, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, and Unto in Mount Joy. A group of participants called SHINE - Sharing Hope In Neighborly Encounters - makes lasagna in local church kitchens and then delivers meals to area residents who are struggling in some way.
“We need drivers,” noted Miller, who added that the ratio of one staff member to three participants is the norm. Drivers may start picking up participants as early as 5:30 a.m. “It’s not just driv-
ing,” noted Miller, who drives participants herself. “(A driver) may have to help the participant in, and buckle the seatbelt,” she said. “Some participants do not have the dexterity in their fingers (to fasten the belt).” LVS has two wheelchair buses, as well.
LVS is looking to expand its Strengthening Pathways program, which offers diverse adult education opportunities for the enhancement of individuals’ skills and quality of life. “We have a waiting list for participants,” said Miller, who added that the vocational rehabilitation program is expanding into Chester
County, as well. “Two of the cars travel to Chester (County) to work with participants at jobs,” said Miller, whose affinity for the transportation piece is related to her work scheduling vehicles, checking pre-trip inspection reports, scheduling maintenance and inspections, and dealing with mechanical issues.

Church sets spaghetti meal
The community is invited to a free hot meal, to be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, at Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3183 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The
meal will be hosted by the church’s mission committee.
The meal will consist of spaghetti, meatballs and sauce, a tossed salad, garlic bread or plain bread, apple-
sauce, and a dessert. The meal will be served in the handicapped-accessible Smith Fellowship Hall. Readers may call the church at 717-687-6619 for additional information.
WordUP Ministries to host movie screening
BY FRANCINE FULTONAs part of an effort to offer informative and entertaining events for the community, WordUP Community Ministries will present a showing of the movie “Fireproof” on Saturday, Oct. 7. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the movie will start at 5 p.m. The movie will be screened on two 65inch television screens at WordUP, a nondenominational church located at 160 Route 41, Gap, in the Dutchland Inc. building. Free bottled water, popcorn and candy will be available.
“Fireproof,” which stars former child actor Kurt Cameron, tells the story of firefighter Caleb Holt and his wife, Catherine, whose marriage is falling apart after seven years. As the couple prepares to begin divorce proceedings, Caleb’s father challenges his son to commit to an effort he calls “The Love Dare.”
“This Love Dare challenge is a 40-day challenge. In the movie, he does it for his wife,” explained Buck Mowday, WordUP pastor. “(The challenge requires that) every day you do something for your wife. Maybe one day you send flowers or make her a meal.”
Mowday noted that two Love Dare journals will be given away on the night of the movie through a random drawing of tickets. The Christian devotional offers daily entries that include a passage from Scripture, a journaling area, a check box to chart progress and the day’s “dare,” such as calling your spouse at work to see how his or her day is going.
“This movie is an old movie, but I think there are a lot of younger people who
have not seen it,” noted Mowday. “We are big on marriage and supporting marriages. If you are dating or planning to date or engaged (or) if your marriage is great or isn’t so great, I think it would be beneficial to see this movie.”
Additionally, WordUP has partnered with A&J’s Twisted Kitchen, 3572 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, to offer a special program for movie goers. Those who dine at the restaurant on Friday, Oct. 6, or Oct. 7 and mention that they are going to see “Fireproof” will be given a ticket to enter to win a $50 gift certificate. At the conclusion of the movie, a winner will be selected through a random drawing.
“Everybody who eats there will get a ticket as long as they say they are coming to the movie. There will be one ticket pulled that night,” said Mowday.
Mowday emphasized that the upcoming movie night is designed for couples to enjoy together. No babysitting will be provided. “This will be a date night. Take your wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend,” said Mowday. “(Everything) will be free. We want to give back to the community. That is what WordUP does.”
WordUP offers an in-person Sunday worship service at 10:45 a.m. The service is also livestreamed on www.youtube.com. The Sunday WordUP cafe, offering coffee and snacks, is open prior to the service at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.wordup communityministries.org or www.facebook.com/WordUP CommunityMinistries.
