Local Author Debuts “Fruit Fables” BY ANN MEAD ASH

On her website, Shelleen Weaver describes herself as an author, speaker, singer, songwriter, wife, mother, friend, and daughter. She is also a New Holland resident and one who loves the Word of God. On Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m., Weaver will launch the first installment of her children’s series “Fruit Fables,” published by her own Haste Laud Press, the company she founded to help her share the stories she was telling her own children. “Love Bird,” recommended for children ages 4 to 8, will be the

first book of nine based on the biblical Fruits of the Spirit. It tells the tale of a squirrel family that notices a new neighbor above their home in the oak tree. When they go to introduce themselves, the neighbor, who is a bird, rudely chatters right back at them. During the night, the family hears the bird offending all its neighbors. Quickly, a meeting is called, and the animals decide to only speak kind words to the offensive bird, causing him to return kind words back to them. “When you choose to love this way, you may see it returned to you,” said Weaver, who added, “(The

book is) teaching that love is sometimes a choice you will yourself to carry out. It’s an action, and it’s hard work.” Weaver explained that the stories are meant to teach. “Because I am a mom, the moral of the story is ... if I am going to work to be creative like that, you’re going to get a lesson,” she said. Each book will end with a section called “Let’s Chew on It.” In “Love Bird,” that section includes seven questions, such as “How would you feel if someone was rude to you?” and “The next time someone is unkind See Local Author pg 7

Pequea Valley Tennis Evens Record at 3-3

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Among the Pequea Valley athletic programs which wrapped up the 2019 season with high expectations for 2020 was the girls’ tennis team. The Braves opened the season with 4-3 and 7-0 victories over Lancaster-Lebanon League rivals Lancaster Mennonite and Annville-Cleona. Following setbacks against Elco (4-3) and Lancaster Country Day (6-1), the Braves played a close match against Section Three rival Lancaster Catholic on Monday, September 21, bowing out 4-3, and went on to blank Columbia on Wednesday afternoon 7-0. In the doubles competition against the Tide, Kiersten Winey and Maya Jaclyn Fritz paired up for an 8-0 win. Josephine Newnam and Rebecca Cox did the same at second doubles. It was PV’s second shutout of A-C on the year as the Braves evened their record at 3-3. In singles competition Fritz and Newnam won the third and fourth singles, respectively with Newnam winning on a forfeit. Adalie Clemmer claimed number one singles and Michaela Sheets won the second singles 6-0, 6-0. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Braves opened the season at Northern Lebanon. The Vikings scored two first-half goals and despite Pequea cutting the lead in half following intermission, Northern Lebanon capitalized on a couple of opportunities to post a 4-1 win. “We had the better play in the early part of the second

half,” commented head coach Steve Morris. “They ended up getting a penalty kick, which they converted, to make it 3-1. They also converted on a direct kick from outside the penalty area. So, even though we got close, the penalty hurt us. “It was certainly not the outcome we were hoping for,” he continued. “But it gives us some things to work on.” Sophomore Elena Esh scored the Braves’ lone goal early in the second half. The Braves are coming off an 8-9-1 season which started off much more promising than the way it ended in 2019. “We were tied for first in our section and ranked fourth in the district at the halfway point of the season,” Morris recalled. “We had a couple of key injuries and lost some games 1-0 or 2-1 down the stretch. But for a young team, we were looking great last year. “This year, we have maturity and experience,” continued the coach. “I have a big junior class. Madison Weaver is our starting goalkeeper. She was second team league allstar as a sophomore. That’s quite an honor for a sophomore.” Senior Baleigh Henshaw will be looked upon for converting scoring chances. She was a first-team all-star forward as a junior. “She had nine goals and several assists last year,” said Morris. “We expect big things from her.” On defense, the entire back line is returning with senior Abi Stoltzfus, sophomore Brooke Graham and juniors

Deena Stoltzfus and Liana Rogers. BOYS’ SOCCER The Braves opened with a 2-0 victory at home over Northern Lebanon, scoring two late goals to notch the L-L League win. “It felt like a first game,” said head coach Peter Bennett. “It took a while to get into the flow and overcome the first game jitters.” With only five minutes remaining in regulation Josh Jarvis broke the scoreless tie on an assist from Landon Fisher. Three minutes later Ryan Stoltzfus scored off a Nevin Stoltzfus assist. “In the second half we really tightened it up. They weren’t threatening in the second half. Our defense stepped up and shut things down,” said Bennett. FOOTBALL Pequea Valley football coach Jeff Werner feels that the right edge his squad needed to overcome challenges in 2019 is already part of the players’ makeup for 2020. “We pretty much laid the groundwork with our players to have a ‘never quit’ attitude,” he explained. With this determination, the Braves visited Nativity BVM at Pottsville for their season opener on September 18. The “never quit” was tested early as BVM got out to a 14-0 Photos by Cheri Sine lead in the first quarter. Nativity quarterback Cody Miller ran one in from 24 Pequea Valley’s Michaela Sheets (left) and Adalie Clemmer paired up at number one doubles and dropped an 8-3 decision to the Crusaders’ Anna Millen and Alexis Morgan in the Braves’ 4-3 loss in yards out. Stephan Spolski made it 14-0 on a two-yard last Monday’s Section Three match at Lancaster Catholic. carry later in the first.

“Our kids kept their composure and did what they had to do,” said Werner. The Braves cut the lead to 14-7 before the half as Nate Fisher connected with Carter Rohrer for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Fisher’s nine-yard rushing TD made it 14-13 early in the second half. Just when it seemed the game was slipping away with two more Nativity touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the Braves inched closer and made it 27-23 on Collin Rohrer 41-yard pass from Fisher and Xavier Padilla’s two-point conversion rushing score. The game ended with that 27-23 final despite a final push from the Nativity 40-yard line with less than a minute to play. “We had no timeouts,” explained Werner. “We took a couple of shots and a pass was intercepted.” One of the best performances on a football field belonged to Tony Lazar. The Braves’ tailback carried the ball 17 times for 190 yards. “He’s a returning starter,” said Werner. “He’s a tough runner and tremendously quick. He really wore that team down. “Our offensive line played extremely well,” added the coach. GOLF Kyle Ebersol had averaged 78.8 on the links in the Braves’ first four games and sophomore Matt Lapp had an 86 going into the league playoffs on Monday, September 21. In the league tournament at Meadia Heights, Ebersol led the PV boys with a 10-over-par 81 as he finished in a seven-way tie for fifth place. He was one of three Class-AA golfers with a score of 81 as he qualified for districts. In a five-way tie for 18th place, Lapp scored 85 on the day while Cordell Beiler shot a 105 and Easton Herr 108. On the girls’ side, Megan Yoder shot a 118. As a squad on the regular season the Braves faced league foes Lancaster Mennonite, Lebanon, LCD, and Annville-Cleona five times each, finishing second in team scoring in all five meetings while A-C finished on top.

ROAST BEEF SUPPER Paradise Elementary School PTO president Christy Fieldsa will oversee the group’s annual mum sale on Oct. 2 and 3.

The mum sale raises funds for the PTO, which then helps cover the costs of classroom supplies and virtual field trips, among other expenses. Paradise Elementary principal Rick Esche said that school began at the end of August, with students in the building five days a week. Currently, the school is at about 60% student capacity, with the other 40% taking advantage of one of several other options. “There’s a hybrid

option online with teachers here (at the school),” said Esche, “and a virtual option that’s more like a cyber school.” Other Paradise Elementary PTO officers include vice president Katie Knaub, secretary Shanon Passmore, and treasurer Broc Passmore. Readers who would like to know more about PTO activities may visit www.pequeavalley.org and click on the “PTO” tab under “Paradise Elementary.”

Local Author from pg 1 to you, how could you respond?” The book also includes a Bible verse, a short prayer, and a theme song. The “Fruit Fables” series was written with encouragement from Weaver’s brother, who overheard her telling her then 3year-old son Tyler a bedtime story. Some time later when she was caring for a nephew who had cancer, she found herself exhausted, but struggling to sleep. “I couldn’t turn my head off,” recalled Weaver, who began writing stories to help herself calm down. After her nephew passed away, Weaver looked over the stories she had written. “They were all using animals to unpack a lesson,” she said, adding that she realized she had the makings of a series on the Fruits of the Spirit. Around the same time, she began talking to other local writers, and she attended a 2015 Christian writers’ conference in Hershey. Following the conference, she took a year to work on other projects, but in 2016, she returned to pitch the books for publication. Although Weaver had interest from a publisher, she ultimately decided to publish through her own company, which she

named Haste Laud based on the words in the song “What Child Is This?” “Jesus said, ‘If I am lifted up, I will draw men unto Me,’” explained Weaver. “That’s our job. The whole point is to bring Him glory, and He will do work in people’s hearts.” To illustrate the book, Weaver turned to a childhood friend she knew was a capable artist. “I met my illustrator at church camp when I was 11,” recalled Weaver. “I hired him not seeing anything he had done since middle school.” Cody Wood is known as an animation artist, and he has been featured on Cartoon Network, but he switched hats for his first book illustration, winning Weaver’s praise. Weaver plans to feature herself and Wood on her website, where they will read the book together, talk about the questions, and even sing the song. “Isn’t that fun?” Weaver asked. “People can meet the author and the illustrator on the site.” Weaver agreed that the appeal of the book is broader than the Christian market and that the lesson of kindness is especially timely. “We learn through stories,” she said. “We are opened to truth through stories.” More information about “Fruit Fables” is available under “Books” at www.shelleenweaver.com.

Christy Fieldsa, Paradise Elementary School PTO president, knows a bit about plants, and she is utilizing that knowledge to help out with the PTO’s second mum sale. “ We will have pink, orange, and yellow, and we will have both early and late blooming plants,” explained Fieldsa. The second Paradise Elementary School PTO mum sale will take place on Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. Plants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Last year, the mums were sold at the school, but logistics made that difficult this year, so two nearby locations along Route 30 were selected. “The Factory Ministries has graciously allowed us to use their front lawn,” said Fieldsa. The Factory is located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The semi-circle driveway in the front will make it easier for those purchasing mums to

pull in and out. The second location is a lot adjacent to the pond at the Paradise Township Building, 2 Township Drive, Paradise. Based on the 2019 fundraiser, Fieldsa anticipates more sales this year. “Last year, we put it together a week ahead of time,” she said. “We had 100 mums, and we sold them all.” This year, with more advance notice, Fieldsa plans to have at least 200 plants available. “When we get them they’re not quite opened,” Fieldsa said of the mums. “They’re just starting to open.” Fieldsa said the plants are also tagged with the name of the color and in pots and ready to plant. The PTO sets the plants at a nominal price and makes $2 on each pot it sells, and the group is hoping to raise $400 this year. “We purposely do it early enough so the buds aren’t open yet so the people get the whole range of the flower,” she said. “We did not want to sell mums with buds that are already open that won’t last (as long).”

High View Welcomes New Pastor, Offers Community Meals

R063675

BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

A lifelong member of Assembly of God (AG) churches, Mark Thiboldeaux never expected he would pastor a congregation in a different denomination, but the Lord has a way of surprising people. Mark grew up in north Philadelphia and earned a bachelor’s degree in Bible from Valley Forge Christian College. He held youth pastor positions in New Jersey and in Berwick before accepting the role of senior pastor at Strasburg Assembly of God. “When I took it over, it was getting ready to close. I built it back up, but life happened, and we didn’t recover from the 2008 recession,” Mark said, adding that the last year was particularly difficult. The church held its final worship service in May 2019. For the rest of 2019, Mark wrestled with what to do next. He considered taking a break from pastoring, and he and his wife, Julie, discussed moving to Israel so he could concentrate on the teaching tour business he joined in 2017. In December 2019, a colleague at the Charles Snyder Funeral Home, where Mark has worked as a chaplain since 2010, suggested he consider applying to fill the pastoral vacancy at High View Church of God (COG), 2470 Leaman Road, Strasburg. Mark declined the candidacy but agreed to serve as interim pastor. “There were too many doctrinal hurdles and the worship styles were too different,” Mark explained. Two days after Christmas 2019, Mark and Julie left for Israel, spending two weeks relaxing and discerning God’s will. When they returned to Strasburg, Mark began working at High View, primarily just as a preacher for worship services. In April, the pastoral candidate the church was pursuing withdrew his name from consideration, and the church board asked Mark if he would consider staying. To abide by COG regulations, the congregation filed for a waiver so the interim pastor could See High View pg 12

Prior to the installation of the marker, Randolph “Randy” Harris and Joshua Schultz, consulting historians, prepared a 20-page illustrated history of the site. According to the written document, the rail line between Columbia, Lancaster County, and the port city of Philadelphia was historically significant not only as the second railroad in

Mark and the elders also had a long conversation about beliefs and traditions, and he ultimately traded his AG pastoral credentials for COG credentials. “We decided that we would focus on the things we agreed upon,” Mark said. Mark enrolled in a religious global studies program at Liberty University School of Divinity in January. As part of the master’s degree work, he was required to evaluate church life, so he looked at High View. “I saw some very excellent foundational things at the church, but outreach was a gap. They really wanted that to change,” Mark recalled. A prime opportunity was presented with the arrival of the novel coronavirus. Church members dropped off meals to people affected by the virus, whether physically or economically. Then a friend of the church gave a significant financial gift that the church has opted to use to support community meals. Beginning on Oct. 7, the meals will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. free of charge. Registration is not required. Although the church lacks a commercial kitchen, the meals will be prepared under Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture guidelines and will include catered aspects from a local restaurant. A “parenting toolbox” class will follow the meals at 7 p.m. Child care will be provided. Everyone who attends the meals may receive bags of nonperishable foods and gift cards to a local market. The new outreach is a practical way that High View is carrying out the message of Matthew 25, which Mark is currently preaching through. “It’s a basic way of caring for those who are hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison, or foreigners,” he said. Worship services are held on Sundays at 10:15 a.m., Sunday school meets at 9 a.m., and Bible studies take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Prerecorded audio messages for worship at home are posted at www.hvcog.org. For more information about High View and the community meals, readers may call the church at 717-687-0523.
