Ziglar, soprano; Hanne Ladefoged-Dollase, mezzo; Brian Ernstes, tenor; and Justin Beck, bass. Berdos noted that Ziglar and Beck are soloists at the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, with which Berdos is also involved. Earlier this year, Berdos hosted rehearsals for a mass choir that performed at Ocean Grove. “I pulled people that I know (as soloists). Since I’m new to the area, I don’t know soloists here,” Berdos said. “I’m putting out an appeal to local people to join us in the chorus, and in the process, I’ll get to know new soloists.” He added, “It gives audiences new voices to hear, and that’s good too.” Some singers who have participated in Berdos’ previous

“Messiah” productions will join the chorus for the performance at Memorial UMC, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m. “(They) are coming from New Jersey and making a weekend of it,” Berdos related. “It’s high quality, a real accomplishment for the people who participate, and they love it.” Auditions are not required to join the chorus. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from Oct. 2 through Dec. 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. at. No rehearsal will be held on the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, Nov. 27. Additional rehearsals will include noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, and the dress rehearsal from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15. Participants are asked to attend as many rehearsals as

but that will depend upon the success of this performance. “I’m hopeful this will make their Christmas special - both performers and audience members,” Berdos said. “(I hope they) make it part of celebrating Jesus the Messiah in their own lives and in their own churches. We’re a church that wants to bring glory to God. We’re excited about it, and we’d like to offer it to the community.” Tickets for the performance will go on sale on Friday, Nov. 1. They may be purchased by visiting www.quarryville.church or by calling the church at 717786-2941. Seating in the auditorium will be limited to about 300 people, so Berdos advised purchasing tickets early. Singers who would like to join the chorus or need information may email Berdos at tom@ quarryville.church.

The concert will focus on Part One of “Messiah,” with the addition of the “Hallelujah” chorus and the final “Amen.” Berdos anticipates working through three choruses at each rehearsal. He is prepared to work with singers with a range of experience. “My job is to find the sweet spot so that everyone leaves the rehearsal having accomplished something and feeling good about it,” Berdos remarked. “I do try to keep the rehearsals upbeat and enjoyable. Yes, it’s complicated classical music, but we have enough time to learn it.” Berdos would like to make this production an annual event,

choral students. Donations of prizes may include paintings; furniture; a fall planter; an item from Thirty-One Gifts; gift cards to restaurants and shops, including a salon gift card; and tickets to the Fulton Theatre. According to Kolby Bills, vice president of the choir, each section of the choir is required to create a themed basket. The tenors will create a baking basket, and the altos will do a fall themed basket. The sopranos are putting together a spa themed basket that will feature soaps and other personal care items, and the bass section is considering making a camping themed basket. Other donated baskets will include a Mary Kay basket, a pasta basket, and a “Lion King” themed basket. Bankert said the concert offers a number of benefits to PVHS choral members by offering them additional musical opportunities. “(Previously) they would start school in August and be learning holiday concert music right away with the first concert in December,” said Bankert. “Now (the benefit concert) exposes them to different types of music and a different concert,” he stated, adding that

for children in need. One adoptive mother told BCS, “My husband and I found the program to be very empowering for us. The information helped us to understand the ‘Why?’ of our son’s behavior, and it gave us the tools we need to help our son.” BCS is founded on the belief that by working together for families, the world can be changed. The organization serves children and families by providing support to overcome adverse life challenges. Readers who would like more information about the Fall Festival may call 484-335-2705.

the students bring their own song ideas for solos, duets, and trios for the first half of the concert and then perform under his supervision. Choir secretary Maggie Johnson said that she enjoys learning the songs for the benefit concert. “I love that we get to learn a variety of music,” she said. Choir librarian Faith Strenck added, “It’s cool that every year we get something new. Broadway is a big term, and you can do a lot with that.” The event is an important

fundraiser for the PVHS choir, which, according to choir president Elijah Elkins, represents a quarter of the school’s population. All the funds raised by the concert will be used for the choir. “This helps to fund attire, sheet music, performance equipment, field trips, transportation costs, festival fees, concert piano upkeep, and guest clinicians,” said Bankert. Past events have raised up to $3,000, and Bankert said he would like to see the concert meet or exceed that number this year. PENNYSAVER

In celebration of Physical Therapy Month, HARTZ Physical Therapy will host the 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk on Saturday, Oct. 5, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting Off the Streets Lancaster, a nonprofit charitable organization. The flat and fast 5K race will be held at Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz, at 9 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners, and customized prizes will be given to the top finishers in each age bracket. A discounted entry fee

is available for teams of five or more participants. In addition, the family-friendly event will feature a children’s fun run (with various distances), fall crafts, post-race food, and music throughout the morning. For additional information or to register, readers may visit www.hartzpt.com. Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster is a volunteer-run charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. Since originating in Lancaster County in May 2013, OTS Lancaster has placed more than

2,000 men, women, and children. According to Lena Hohenadel, grants coordinator for OTS Lancaster, the funds from the Fall Blast 5K will directly help between 15 and 20 families that are experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County to secure a home. Requests for help increased 36% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is expected in 2019. As a Lancaster County-based, family-owned business, HARTZ Physical Therapy has raised more than $200,000 for various local charities through the Fall Blast

and other events over the past 15 years. It has clinics in Lititz, Mount Joy, and Ephrata, as well as two in Lancaster. The signature sponsor is Environmental Recovery Corporation (ERC), and elite sponsors include Apex Realty of Lancaster, Versatek, Roseville Wealth Management, Hajoca of Lancaster, Airport View Self Storage, Emerald Advisors, PNC Bank, Tiger’s Eye, and Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL).

A number of volunteers helped out during the Fall Blast 5K in 2018. Hosted by HARTZ Physical Therapy, this year’s race will raise funds for Off the Streets Lancaster. Several other teachers at the school are also doing this.

Christy Brown, second-grade teacher at Paradise Elementary School, reached out to friends and family members and raised enough funds to buy each child in her class a book from Scholas-

tic for every month of the school year. This is a way to help the students build their home library and to make sure no one feels left out when the Scholastic box arrives at the school.

New teachers include Sophie Dodge, second-grade teacher at the New Danville campus; Emily Grimes, music teacher and Campus Chorale touring choir director at the Lancaster campus; and Heather Ruark, first-grade Span-

She is a graduate of Allegheny College with a Bachelor of Arts in community and justice studies, education studies and communication arts, and she received her Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in the Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program. In Philadelphia, she student-taught in two public schools while taking courses for her certification and degree. She attends Ephrata Grace Church. Grimes has a Bachelor of Arts in music from Goshen College. Before coming to LM, she was the music director at Western Mennonite School in Salem, Ore., and the music department chair at Dock Mennonite Academy in Lansdale. She has been the worship band leader at Mennonite Church USA Conventions in 2017 and 2019 and the Mennonite World Conference in Harrisburg in 2015. She was also a member of the Hymnal Review Committee for the new Mennonite Church Hymnal, which is scheduled for release in 2020. She attends Salford Mennonite Church. Ruark has a Bachelor of Arts from Goshen College and just finished her master’s degree in education with a concentration on bilingual education from the University of Texas. She began her teaching career at an international elementary charter school in Atlanta, where she worked with refugee children. Ruark has spent most of the past 13 years teaching at two different bilingual elementary schools in Mexico. She has also studied and has done volunteer work in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Cuba and at the Texas-Mexico border. She taught third grade at LM’s Locust Grove campus a few years ago. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9x13” pan with coconut oil or nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium-sized pan (or mediumsized bowl in microwave), melt coconut oil on low heat. Add in sugar and stir for a couple minutes to dissolve some sugar (all sugar will not be dissolved...be sure to not overcook). Take off heat and pour mixture in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and vanilla. Whisk in eggs, until smooth, then add the flour and chocolate chips, stirring to combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. (I used a stoneware pan to bake, so I baked mine on the longer side--32 minutes.) She considers herself cured. “Epilepsy is a spectrum disorder,” Michnya explained. “It looks different and treatments are different in each person.” Navigating life with epilepsy is challenging, the trio agreed. “There didn’t seem to be a lot of resources available,” Wingert said. “I saw my neurologist every six months, but they couldn’t help with the emotional aspect.” Thankfully, he said, he discovered the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern Pennsylvania (EFEPA) through social media a few years ago. Epilepsy has two sets of specific challenges, Wingert suggested: the seizures themselves and the side effects of the treatments available. The uncertainty of the disorder, the restriction from driving and from certain occupations, and the financial costs of medication, ambulance rides, and hospital stays can create a lot of stress. For people like Wingert who have idiopathic seizures,

stress can trigger more seizures. Thus, having a community of understanding people is hugely important. Michnya is EFEPA’s Lancaster County resource coordinator. She coordinates a support group and other programs to ensure people with epilepsy have the encouragement, guidance, and information they need. “My job allows me to give back,” she said. “I feel really fortunate.” Michnya is also helping to coordinate Lancaster County’s inaugural Walk to End Epilepsy along with Wingert and DeBalko, who are both volunteers. Wingert had attended a version of the event in Philadelphia and was so impressed by the camaraderie and sense of community among the participants that he suggested that it be brought to Lancaster. “It was more than time to have it here,” Michnya said. “It sends a great message: You are not alone in your diagnosis.” The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held at the Lancaster

Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Saturday, Oct. 12. Registration will open at 9 a.m., the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will conclude by noon. Both DeBalko and Wingert are slated to speak during the opening ceremony. The walk will mimic Philadelphia’s event by taking place inside the stadium. “It really brings the community together,” Wingert said of keeping the event contained. The event is family focused, so there will be activities for children throughout the morning. These include entertainment by a magician, face painting, balloon sculpting, and play on an inflatable slide. Refreshments will be provided at the event, and an afterparty will be held at Yorgos, 66 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There will also be opportunities to win gift cards and other prizes at the walk. Additionally, vendors will be on hand to offer information about pharmaceuticals, CBD, and more. The Walk to End Epilepsy will be held rain or shine. There is no charge to attend the event, but fundraising is encouraged. A minimum fundraising amount has been set to receive an event T-shirt. Proceeds from the walk will fund research into treatments and cures as well as resources for people with the disorder. Event sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information or to register for the walk, readers may visit www.EpilepsyWalkPA.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Oct. 11. Individuals may also register at the event. Michnya may be reached for questions at kmichnya@efepa.org or 717449-1872.

Junior Achievement is seeking volunteers for its programs. Junior Achievement is a worldwide nonprofit organization that presents life skills through hands-on educational materials focusing on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness. Junior Achievement projects it will reach more than 100,000 students this school year, which will require more than 8,000 volunteers. The organization’s programs are as follows. REAL Life is a daylong program designed for students in 11th or 12th grade. Held at local high schools, REAL Life consists of a series of activities intended to help students gain an appreciation for good financial decision-making. Five sessions are held throughout the day. STEM Summit is a daylong program held at local high schools for ninth- or 10th-grade students. This program includes nine 30-minute sessions that include science experiments, technology, engineering, math competitions and trades modules. Volunteers will seek to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Each volunteer will work with nine different groups of students throughout the event. YES! (Your Economic Success) is a half-day morning program held at middle schools. All students in the building participate in the program at the same time. It consists of a series of activities intended to help

students realize the importance of financial and career decisions. Each volunteer leads one activity with four different groups of students. At JA BizTown, fifth- and sixthgrade students become JA BizTown “citizens” for a day. The students work in one of 14 businesses, manage their personal and business finances, develop and sell products, hold business meetings, pay taxes and donate to charities. Business and community volunteers assist the students. Junior Achievement offer classroom programs consisting of five sessions, each 30 to 55 minutes in length. Volunteers lead the pre-written, activity-based sessions, which introduce students to topics such as wants versus needs and how to write a check. Students also learn about career options. The Symposiums are one-day workshops of mentoring, motivation and opportunities for high school sophomores and juniors who are nominated by their schools. A typical Symposium includes presentations and speakers, mentoring sessions and activities designed to help students gain personal and career success skills. Students explore a variety of opportunities available to them after high school. To sign up for an event or for more information, readers may contact Lisa Vaughn, volunteer engagement manager, at l v a u g h n @ j a s c p a . o r g or 717843-8028.
