Preserving the past through plumbing
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, likes to tell a story about his first tour of the former Paradise Elementary School building where the ministry is housed. “I thought the bathrooms were awful,” recalled Nagle. To his amazement, a female friend who toured at the same time came out of the women’s room and said, “Adam, these bathrooms are awesome.” Nagle responded, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Nagle quickly learned that the bathrooms differed somewhat and that his friend was admiring the soap stone stall walls, tile, and other features that harkened back to the building’s construction in 1927.
Unfortunately, the bathrooms needed to be updated in several ways.
“Currently, not one bathroom in this building is ADA compliant,” said Nagle. To change that, The Factory obtained a Community Development Block Grant funded by HUD with the

goal of updating the bathrooms while, as Nagle says, “maintaining the integrity of the things (many women) have commented on.”
Currently, Beechdale Builders employees and subcontractors are at work on the multi-stall bathrooms located between the gymnatorium and the large pillars that frame the front door. “What we have chosen to do is overhaul them leaving the soap stone there, and we will build stand-alone ADA units to the one side,” explained Nagle, noting that a shower facility will be added for Factory participants who are struggling and may be living out of their car and for staff members who like to exercise on work breaks.
“The only thing that will feel different from the current look is the tile on the walls will be replaced with a smooth surface used in most commercial bathrooms that is easy to clean and maintain,” said Nagle. Floor tiles, stalls, sinks, and mirrors will remain, but new lighting will help visitors to appreciate the historic details.
Functional, beautiful, and historic Organizations partner for Lancaster County Barn Tour
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Elaine Bowman, board member with the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV), and a member and former executive board member for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County (HPT), had an idea. Having worked on a few church tours with HSCV about a decade ago, she thought she could bring the two organizations together to create a tour of local outbuildings. “I thought,‘Wouldn’t it be fun to hold
a barn tour?’” said Bowman, who mulled the idea over for a bit before bringing it to both organizations in late 2022.
Bowman called together a committee that began meeting monthly in January. Members contacted Lancaster County historical societies and municipalities, along with some interested citizens for nominations of barns, and they received more than 100 nominations. “We were looking for not just historical aspects but architectural

Nagle lauded both Beechdale and the subcontractors for taking on the job which must be completed by November to satisfy the grant requirements. A complicated bidding procedure combined with inflation and the timing of the grant all contributed to pushing the project into crunch time. “Beechdale agreed to do it, but it must be done by the first week in November,” explained Nagle, who sat down to talk with Beechdale owner Sam King and project manager Matt Graham before work began in early September. “They bent over backward to restructure some things to get this done for the community,” Nagle reported. “It has been a gift.”
Nagle added that it is always a plus to be able to use grant money for a building project. “It’s cool to be able to get it done in this capacity so that donor dollars can go toward operational ends,” he said.

“The library will have a table with grab bags for the kids with coloring books and crayons,” noted Shawnie Betts, a member of the Christiana Lions Club and one of the car show organizers. The fire company will provide attendees with an opportunity to win prizes, and representatives from the Lions Club and the historical society will be on hand throughout the day.
Betts said that all makes and models of vehicles are welcome at the first-time event. “We would love to have tractors or old fire trucks,” she said. “We will have an ugly duckling prize and a fan favorite (as voted on by attendees). “Christiana Mayor Mark Carner does custom interior work,

and he is sponsoring a prize for best (car) interior.”
Music will be provided by The 45 Guy. “He will spin vinyl records, and he’s a car guy,” said Betts.
Food trucks that will be on hand include Butch’s BBQ, which will offer hamburgers, french fries, sausage sandwiches and pork barbecue sandwiches, and the Softie Whirl ice cream truck.
Betts explained she came up with the idea to hold a car show after visiting with Christiana borough manger Bobbi Maser. “Bobbi said we should offer more (activities) for the community,” said Betts, who is the manager of Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard. “We brought the idea to the mayor and borough council for approval. They thought it would be good use of the space.”
An organizing committee has been planning the event for the past several months. Jenn Semple, the borough’s administrative assistant, designed the car show poster and helped with fundraising.
Vehicle owners who register in advance will receive a discount. Registration forms are available at the Christiana Borough office, 10 W. Slokom Ave. Sameday registrations will also be accepted.
Betts said that community events are what make small towns so attractive to residents, citing the annual Christmas in Christiana event. “That is what sold me on this town. I love a closeknit community,” she said. “With Christmas in Christiana, (it makes) you believe in Santa all over again.”

components that make that barn interesting,” said Bowman.
After narrowing down the nominated barns, the result is a booklet Bowman calls “a drive-by tour.” “It is timeless,” she noted, adding that more than 50 barns are included in the self-guided journey. For each barn, there’s a photo of the outside and the inside and a writeup about the history.
“Greg Huber, a Berks County barn expert, is doing the architectural writeups for us,” said Bowman. The full color, 8.5-by-11 inch books will be introduced for sale on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Musuem Firehouse, 2451

Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. The event will also include speakers, and ginger snaps and cider will be served. Sales of the book will benefit both HPT and HSCV.
As a former school principal, Bowman is excited to offer the learning experience to area families. “We are looking to educate folks on our history, our culture, and architectural features of the barns,” she said, adding that fall is the perfect time to meander through the back roads of Lancaster County.
“You can look at 10 over a
weekend and three months later (look at) more,” she noted.
Danielle Keperling, HPT executive director, was excited that the two groups partnered for the project. “It works well because it brings the strengths of both groups together,” she said, noting that the booklet will raise awareness of the importance of local barns. “The outbuildings on a farm – once you stop farming –are the most endangered,” she explained. “From a preservation standpoint,
that is good to highlight.”
In addition to Keperling, members of the barn tour committee are HPT manager Kristi Stoehr, HPT executive commmittee member Jordan Zimmerman, HSCV vice president Angela Stewart, HSCV treasurer James Brubaker, HSCV researcher and librarian Cynthia Marquet, and HSCV member Brian Chelton with help from Diane Fichthorn.

What certain noises may indicate about your car
Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago. The cars of today are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car. Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.
- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in
the pockets. That mistake is immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.
- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the uni-
versal joint, often referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. U-joints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the U-joint needs to be addressed immediately.
- Squealing sound: A highpitched squealing sound typically means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.
How to conserve fuel without giving up driving
In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as
Performance issues that can affect older cars
- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.
Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.
Modern cars have much longer life spans than one may expect. Not too long ago, drivers often commemorated the milestone of their vehicles reaching the 100,000-mile mark. However, data from Car and Driver indicates the average vehicle now lasts around 12 years or roughly 200,000 miles. More advanced electric or hybrid vehicles may be able to go even farther, with some capable of reaching as many as 300,000 miles.
Thanks to advancements in technology, cars are more durable than ever, but that doesn’t make them immune from breakdowns or the need for repairs. A report from AAA found that more than twothirds of service calls were for vehicles a decade or older. Here’s a look at some of the problems that can affect older vehicles.
of springs, tires, shock absorbers, struts, anti-sway bars and other parts that connect the vehicle to the wheels. Suspension systems regulate the amount of bouncing in the vehicle while on the road and make it manageable. Eventually, all suspension systems wear out, and parts need to be serviced or replaced.
Evaporative emissions are another challenge. The evaporative system consists of a network of hoses, canisters and valves, and it helps vent pressure in the gas tank. An older vehicle may end up with a cracked hose that can cause a fuel leak. Hoses also may be compromised elsewhere in vehicles, so these points should be checked during routine maintenance.
rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes. Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.
Consider whether to use
air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag.
Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.
Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many
modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.
Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption. Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel. These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.
Among the problems older vehicles face are battery issues. The average car battery lasts between three and five years, according to Auto Zone. Batteries tend to show signs of wear at the fouryear mark on average. Corrosion or dirt on battery terminals also can affect battery performance.
Older cars may also experience electrical system problems, caused by anything from burnt-out car fuses to bad or faulty electrical connections and contacts. Corroded or loose screws, nuts and wires can cause electrical issues, which may be more common in older vehicles that have significant mileage on them.
Vehicles may also have trouble with their suspension system, which consists
As with other moving parts on a car, the brake system wears down over time, and parts need to be replaced. Squealing, squeaking or a soft brake pedal are indicative of braking system issues and should be looked at by a mechanic promptly.
Modern vehicles are increasingly being controlled by computers. These computers handle a variety of features, including navigation and pairing to mobile phones, among others. Over time, systems may no longer work if there are no computer updates available. That means Bluetooth pairing may no longer function, or maps may not be current for GPS systems.
Due to technological advancements, cars and trucks have longer life spans than they used to. However, age is still a factor in the deterioration of vehicle systems.

William Penn was granted land in the American colonies by King Charles II of England in 1681. Penn and his companions explored the area and made treaties of peace with the indigenous people.
By 1701, European pioneers had established firm routes to the unknown lands of what became Lancaster County. Penn felt the need to reestablish a firm relationship with the Delaware branch of the Susquehannock Native Americans, which had settled in what is known today as Columbia. Penn travelled west on the Minquas

Trail from Philadelphia. There is a sign in Gap that commemorates the trail. (The sign is near McDonald’s on Route 30.)
The east-west Minquas Trail and its intersecting Octoraro Trail had been travelled for hundreds of years. Tribes often came together there for events. So popular was this area as a meeting place, the local tribes established a small garden of squash, corn and beans, which served as a base for meals for those who rested here. It became a natural travel lane for the immigrating European pioneers who called it Gap-in-the-Hills.
Penn and his party were greeted there by several high ranking members of the Delaware tribe whose intent was to escort Penn’s party to Columbia. The tired travelers are reputed to have camped the night near where the Gap Post Office is today. Legend says their native hosts served a meal from the garden nearby. Entertainment for the night would have been Native American
dancing, which Penn is reported to have joined. The cave Penn presumably slept in that night was covered up when Chestnut Street was paved in the early 20th century.
In the morning, before heading for Columbia, Penn and the chiefs signed a parchment peace agreement and Penn was presented with a belt of promised loyalty. It is believed that the flat rock on which that treaty was signed is today called Penn’s Rock and stands at the south end of Chestnut Street.
Traditionally made of purple quahog clam and white mollusk shells tumbled by the sea into round bead-like form, the beads on the belt were woven together in a set pattern to signify strength and friendship. The original belt presented to William Penn in 1701 is carefully preserved in the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg today.

At the event, a representative of the Susquahannocks presented him with a belt. This time, the belt was a replica. The original 1701 weaving was made of leather strips instead of today’s thread, and the beads were more cylindrical. The belt and the accompany-

The belt is now in the Historical Society of Salisbury Township’s artifacts collection.
