Upward Basketball To Return BY ANN MEAD ASH
ammy Shondelmyer, director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, is happy to invite area children to take part in Upward Basketball during the fall and winter of 2021-22. “We strive to engage in fun competition that provides instruction for kids with all levels of experience,” said Shondelmyer. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program for students in grades one through seven provided through sponsoring churches. At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. “If your child is an experienced player or brand new to the game, Upward is a place where their skills will improve with practice and encouragement,” Shondelmyer said.
T
form drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for competition. First- and second-grade boys and girls play together on coed teams. See Basketball pg 5
Pequea Baptist Church will host Upward Basketball.
Advocating For Adults BY ANN MEAD ASH
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Anna Beasley, director of adult advocacy with The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, explained that causes of poverty work kind of like a game of dominoes. “We believe poverty is a lack of resources,” stated Beasley, who listed the six areas of resources as intellectual, emotional, relational, financial, physical, and spiritual. “When you knock one of those down, they all fall down,” she explained. It is part of Beasley’s job to help Factory participants see that while it’s hard to stand all the dominoes
Heather Furlong, who taught at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) for the past eight years, began her new job as school principal on July 1. She recently talked about the transition from teaching to administration. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : W hat made you apply to become school principal? up at the same time, focusing on one can often help right the others. To that end, Beasley and other advocates at The Factory work to connect participants with resources and set goals. “We are relationally based, so we provide a lot of relational support through the process,” Beasley said. The Factory also offers learning tracks to help develop a future orientation. “(We help them see) that decisions (made) now affect them down the road,” said Beasley, who noted that sessions may include discussion of ways to earn money or budget while setting up to connect participants with resources.

Freedom Life Church invites the community to participate in the seventh Freedom 5K, as well as a fun run, on Saturday, Oct. 9. The events will take place at Salisbury Township Park, also known as Gap Park, located at 750 White Horse Road, Gap. All proceeds, including registration fees and sponsorship donations, will benefit the A21 Campaign, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reach, rescue and restore individuals affected by human trafficking in the Unites States and worldwide. Organizers are eager to have the fundraiser in person this year. “In 2020, it was a virtual event; people just signed up and ran on their own,” said Angie Dearolf,

Freedom Life communications director. “We want people to come together for a good cause and to enjoy community again.” Registration for the Freedom 5K will open at 7:45 a.m., and the timed 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in various age categories, based on a chip timing system. A modified fun run will follow the 5K, and it will not be timed. The 5K course, which will follow a trail around trees and ballfields in the park, is paved and will include low-grade inclines and declines. “The run/walk stays in the park,” Dearolf explained. “The trail around the park is over threequarters of a mile, so they do that four times and that equals the 5K. The fun run will be one lap.” Walkers are welcome to take part in both the fun run and the 5K. “We often have people come with their strollers, (but) in Gap Park, they do not permit pets,” Dearolf noted.

Meet The Goldens Event Scheduled Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue will hold its monthly Meet and Greet the Goldens from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, on Saturday, Oct. 9. The public is invited to meet and greet the golden retrievers and other dogs that are available for adoption. Admission is free. Connecting participants to resources, which are often located in Lancaster, in a manner that is comfortable is important to the advocates. Whenever possible, participants are given a warm handoff via a joint meeting or other type of introduction. “It’s very overwhelming for those in a rural area to deal with resources in the city,” explained Beasley. “ We want to bridge that gap as best we can.” She noted that a bus from the city does stop at The Factory to facilitate transportation needs. In addition to providing relational services through advocates, Beasley said, programs such as the Community Care Team that meets at 2 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month help clients to build

So far, the club has held a chicken barbecue, as well as a Christmas bazaar at the Gap Fire Hall. Most recently, it held a food distribution for people in need this past spring. During the event, held at Salisbury Township Community Park, Lions Club members distributed about 160 boxes of food in a drive-up format. Tennis Teams Posts 5-2 Win Over N. Lebanon
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Pequea Valley squad served up a 5-2 L-L League victory over Northern Lebanon on Monday, September 27. It was the Braves’ first league victory (1-3) as they improved to 1-5 overall. Kyleigh Jarvis not only cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number one singles, she and Sanjurjo battled to a 9-7 win at number one doubles. Sanjurjo was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number two doubles. Kylie Stoltzfus helped win another team point. She and Denny were 8-1 winners at number three doubles. FOOTBALL The Braves’ offense was unable to put any points on the board in Friday night’s loss to Garden Spot in non-league gridiron action. In a 56-0 victory on September 24, the Spartans claimed their first win of the year (1-4). The Braves, who had picked up their first win the previous week, fell to 1-3. A defensive touchdown and another score had the Braves trailing by only two touchdowns after the first quarter. But a dominant rushing game - 284 yards on 45 attempts - helped Garden Spot dominate time of possession and subsequently the scoreboard. The Spartans put 35 more points on the board before halftime. September 27, at Honeybrook Golf Club. Matt Lapp of Pequea Valley finished in a tie for eighth place as he shot a 6-over-par 76. Senior Kyle Ebersol shot an 82 and ended the day in a six-way tie for 20th on the leaderboard. The scorecard for Manheim Township’s Emmett Kappesser featured a 1 under 69, earning him the boys’ individual title. In the team standings, Lampeter-Strasburg ended Township’s 11-year reign by edging the Blue Streaks 308 to 309. BOYS’ SOCCER The Braves defeated Dayspring

The Braves are sitting atop the Section Four standings - tied with Annville-Cleona at 2-0-0 in league play. “We have had a good strong defense and good goalkeeping all year,” Bennett said. “We’ve been fortunate to have some good goal scorers too. In the second half of the season, word gets out and teams make adjustments. I’m glad we are able to try different things.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Following back-to-back 1-0 matches, the Pequea girls’ soccer team broke through with three goals in a 3-1 non-league victory at York Suburban on Monday night, September 27. That offense came alive in the first half as Morgan Graham scored 15 minutes into the match followed by two more goals by Elena Esh. Both goals by the junior came within eight minutes of one another. Emily Diller, Caroline Fisher and Jenna Rishel were each credited with an assist in the win while on the defensive side, Maddy Weaver made four saves. The Braves (7-4-0) were coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Octorara. In the home game on Saturday, it was the visiting Braves who left the field victorious, defeating Pequea 1-0 in overtime. Sidnie Althouse gave Octorara the win with Gianna Georgette providing the assist. Weaver showed her usual dependability throughout regulation and into overtime, making six saves. She had four saves and registered a shutout on Thursday, September 23 in a 1-0 L-L League win at home over Lancaster Catholic. Christian Academy in a nonleague afternoon game on Wednesday, September 29. The win improves the Braves’ mark to 9-1-1 overall. In the 2-0 victory, the Braves started out slow yet patient, according to head coach Peter Bennett. “They were a very defensive minded team,” he said of Dayspring. “We were playing on a grass field, which was slower for us. We needed to stay persistent. “I’m glad that we stayed persistent and were rewarded,” continued the coach. “I was glad to see us try some different things taking what we talked about at
halftime and putting it to work.” The Braves scored the game’s first goal on a laser off the foot of Dylan Ratjavong from right inside the 18 (Regan Thomas assist). Nevin Stoltzfus took a feed on a breakaway, taking an assist from Ratjavong, and touching it past the goalkeeper. Speaking of goalkeepers, Jazae Itegi had to only make two saves to claim his fourth shutout of the season. “We’ve had seven shutouts,” Bennett explained. “In three of those, Jazae split time with Gabe McDonald.” The Braves’ prior game was a 2-1 triumph over Octorara on
Saturday, September 25. Jamison Castor of Pequea and J.D. Mickel of the Octorara Braves both scored a goal in the first half, making it 1-1 at intermission. Castor scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. “It was fast-paced and exciting,” Bennett said. “We were fortunate enough to get a second goal with about three or four minutes left in the game. “Every time we play them, it’s a tough match,” Bennett said of Octorara. “For as long as I’ve coached, this backyard rivalry has always been hard-fought end-toend games.”
