Tattoos And Testimonies
David Ring (left photo) will be the featured speaker and Jameson Road Band (right photo) will play when Restart Training Center Ministry holds its annual fall banquet at Shady Maple Banquet Center on Nov. 5. By Ann Mead Ash
Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), has known speaker David Ring for more than a decade. “I met David Ring in 2005 at the
Sanford Teen Challenge in Sanford, Fla.,” recalled Santiago. “I was the director of education there when he came to speak.” Santiago had heard of Ring through the church community, and he was so impressed with Ring’s story that he remembered it and kept Ring in mind
when he was in need of a speaker for the third annual RTCM fall banquet on Monday, Nov. 5, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open for fellowship and appetizers at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. See Restart Banquet pg 8
Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. See Story Marks pg 4
STAGE ADAPTATION
665 W. Main St., New Holland, will present “Tilly,” a stage adaptation by Henry O. Arnold of Frank Peretti’s novel of the same name, on Fridays, Oct. 12 and 19, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Oct. 13 and 20, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays, Oct. 14 and 21, at 4 p.m. A portion of all ticket sales will go to Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services. The organization’s purpose is to declare and demonstrate the transforming power of Christ and the sacredness of human life. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.cavodacademy.com or call 717-354-3355. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door. NEW BUILDING
Forgiven Worship Center, formerly located in the Intercourse Fire Company, will hold a grand opening at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, in the church’s new building at 325 W. Main St., New Holland. Readers who would like more information may search for “Forgiven Worship Center” on Facebook.

In 1998, Kim Jureckson was asked to teach a modern dance class to adults, and she had an epiphany. “I looked around, and there were beautiful dancers in this class,” recalled Jureckson. “They all had professional (dance) training … and I thought there should be opportunity for these people other than coming once a week to take a class.” Jureckson’s revelation eventually became Grant Street Dance Company, a multigenerational organization especially for sincere dancers who have not chosen dance as a career. “Once you pass 21, what does a dancer who has had serious training and chosen not to pursue that as a career do? You danced all your life
One aspiration of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster chapter is to
make inclusion a priority of the program. “Our goal is to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school,” explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community See Fall 5K pg 7
Dancer Marian Veilleux will be one of 10 performers to participate in the Grant Street Dance Company concert titled “No Strings Attached “to be held at The Trust on Oct. 20 and 21. and you love it. You are trained. You have ability,” noted Jureckson. See Grant Street Dance pg 8
Girls from every school district in the county are preparing to take part in the Girls on the Run 5K, which will be held at Millersville University on Nov. 10. The untimed 5K is open to area runners who would like to participate.

is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I
understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.” One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other,” she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus.” Other members of the Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster Christian Women’s Club hub who are organizing the event include Linda Johnston, Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Marlene Hall, and Joleen Yunginger. There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who

The 5K and Fun Run/Walk will take place Friday, Oct. 19, starting at 5:15 p.m. Registration will begin at 4 p.m. on race day, or participants may preregister by Tuesday, Oct. 16, at www.wfcs.org/5K. All 5K entrants who preregister will receive a T-shirt and a fast-food chicken sandwich at the completion of the run. Fun Run participants have the option to preorder a sandwich when they register online. Individuals who are not participating in the run or walk may call the school office to preorder a sandwich for a fee at 610-593-5011. Those who
register on race day for either event will receive T-shirts while supplies last. No sandwiches will be available unless preordered. The 5K will be an out-andback course on the road, with two slight hills and rural scenery. There will be awards for the topfinishing male and female, as well as awards for seven different age groups. The Fun Run/Walk will take place on campus. No pets will be permitted; however, children in strollers equipped to travel on grass are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Academy at WFCS, a high school program that currently serves students in grades nine through 11 with a college-style program of classroom courses that supplement and support homeschooled students. This year, the Academy has added

electives and a Spanish course. “(The Academy is) not as well-known as the school, so this is an opportunity to get some exposure for the Academy. It’s also drawing the community in as well as our patrons and alumni, said Academy teacher Kendra Ridgway. “Not everyone can do a 5K, but almost anybody can walk a mile or push a stroller. It’s meant to be a fun family evening that everybody can be part of. Oct. 19 will also offer an opportunity to preview auction items that will be offered for sale the next day and to bid on a selection of silent auction items. “(The 5K) is a kickoff for the auction as well, said race director Janice McIntyre. “I like the fitness component of it and the fellowship component of it and the fundraising. We thought it would be a good way to bring people in who would not normally come to our campus, and they can preview the auction at the same time. “ We’re trying to provide a wider net to invite people in from our community in order to see where we are and, probably more importantly, who we are, added WFCS principal Robbie Martin. “Most of the time, when you come here and visit and interact with staff and our patrons, you will find this is a special place. Activities on Saturday, Oct. 20, will start with an all-you-caneat pancake breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m., made and served by members of the school’s eighth-grade class and their parents. The menu will include pancakes, sausage and beverages. The eighth-graders will also help with the day’s children’s activities. Supervised child care
for children in prekindergarten through third grade will be provided at a nominal fee from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from both the breakfast and the children’s activities and child care will support the eighth-grade mission trip to West Virginia. The auction will begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 20. Featured items will include handmade quilts, artwork, vacation and travel packages, indoor and outdoor furnishings, sports tickets, collectibles, nursery stock, home and garden items, gift baskets and more. “ We have lots of Eagles authenticated items this year, WFCS public relations director Kim Hoffman said. “ We also have a lovely quilt that was pieced together by a great-grandmother from the second-grade class last year. Food will be available, including soup, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos, pizza, burgers and soft pretzels. There will be a baked goods table with homemade cakes, pies, apple dumplings and more. WFCS is located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may call the school office at 610-5935011 or visit www.facebook .com/westfallowfieldchristian school or www.wfcs.org. Pictured on front:

the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe. Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on Saturday morning,” Wilson said. “As all the girls are running, (the Millersville students) will be cheering at the tops of their lungs or forming tunnels with their hands for the girls to run through or creating a high-five line (for the runners).” Wilson noted that the Millersville students can provide a real boost. “A girl who is struggling with motivation will turn the corner and see that team and take off,” said Wilson. “It lifts the spirit.” Johnson noted that in addition, members of area high school clubs volunteer at the 5K. Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited

Fall 5K from pg 1 organizations like Boys and Girls Club,” said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team.” With that in mind, a team of nine girls from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club began meeting on Sept. 10, and the group will take part in its first 5K when GOTR Lancaster holds its fall run at Millersville University on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration for the untimed run in the Pucillo Gymnasium will begin at 7 a.m. GOTR kicked off its fall season on Sept. 4 with 61 teams and 800 girls meeting in every school district in the county. Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K,” said Wilson. ongoing flowing kind of experience with the underlying theme of human connection.” Jureckson added that this connection will be displayed physically in dancers’ bodies actually sharing weight or in focus with dancers looking at each other in a way that conveys a message. Jureckson pointed out that dance plays an important role in an age where communication is easier than ever but real human connection is not necessarily in abundance. “Dance is an art form that you can’t phone in,” Jureckson commented. “You have to be in the same room with someone to dance with them.” Calling dance personal and genuine whether two people are dancing or two
Restart Banquet from pg 1 Ring, who was born with cerebral palsy, became an orphan at the age of 14. He endured ridicule and embarrassment because of his disabilities, but Ring found acceptance and self-respect after beginning a relationship with Christ, which has sustained him and allowed him to overcome in spite of his circumstances. Ring has shared his story with thousands of people since he began speaking in 1973. Santiago has heard Ring speak several times now, and he recalls points from the story that continue to resonate with him. “When (Ring) was born, he didn’t breathe,” explained Santiago. Medical personnel, believing Ring was dead, ignored the baby for nearly 20 minutes. “That’s a miracle,” said Santiago. “Who doesn’t breathe for 20 minutes and lives?” When Ring was orphaned, his older sister took him in. “(Ring’s) older sister was a believer, and she introduced him to

On Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m., 10 members of the Grant Street Dance Company will present “No Strings Attached” at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. According to Jureckson, “No Strings Attached” was created from her wish to approach this performance from a fresh perspective. She has chosen music that will range from classical to distinctly German sounds, and guitarist Chris Keeney will accompany one section of the performance. “The other goal I had in addition to breaking strings was to see if I could blend a group of unrelated dances together in a seamless performance,” said Jureckson. “It’s an

RTCM, located at 2324 Leaman Road, Lancaster, strives to help men who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 students since February. At this time, six students live in the facility along with two graduates who are serving as interns and four live-in staff members. The facility can accommodate up to a dozen students. Santiago noted that one way the ministry helps students to beat addiction is through significant amounts of Bible study and training. “We have a track record of working toward a minimum of 20 hours a week of either spiritual or life skill classes with the men in this house,” said Santiago. “In a

“ We were the resident dance company,” recalled Jureckson. “We had a home and a rehearsal space.” When the New Movement Center closed and Grant Street lost its rehearsal space, Jureckson thought that season of her life might be over. “The dancers were not about to let the company fall apart,” said Jureckson. “Grant Street was too important to them.” Jureckson said in the last 10 years, the company has not done full concerts. Rather it has done small performances in other shows. The anniversary event will be a celebration of the 20 years Grant Street has been creating dance experiences for dancers and audiences. dozen are taking the stage, she added, “When you’re dancing together, it’s an authentic connection.” Making connections during rehearsal is not always easy, according to Jureckson, who is working with all women for this show. “Working with dancers of different ages and backgrounds is not always smooth, but it is real connection,” Jureckson relayed. “It is a collaborative effort (where) we all come together as professionals, and we have to keep lines of communication open. I find that beautiful (and) challenging and a refreshing change.” For the first 10 years of its existence, Grant Street self-produced a yearly concert under the umbrella of the New Movement Center of Lancaster, which was a local nonprofit organization.

Lady Braves Blank A-C, Currently 5th in Districts by Ara Grigorian
With a scoreless draw and a 6-0 victory, the Pequea Valley girls’ soccer team improved to 6-3-1 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League and upped its record to 10-3-2 overall. The Braves head into the final week of the regular season, battling for second place in a tough Section Four. Lancaster Catholic (10-0-0) has clinched the section while AnnvilleCleona is one game ahead of the third-place Braves. Regardless of how things shape up for the league playoffs, Pequea Valley finds itself fifth in the District Three Class-AA power rankings while Eastern Lebanon County and Lancaster Catholic - two unbeaten teams occupy the top two spots. The Braves faced Annville-Cleona on Monday. Despite 80 minutes of play in regulation time plus two overtime periods, neither side was able to score. The Braves registered 24 shots on goal and Dutchmen goalie Alyssa Ulrich turned away all 24. Meanwhile,
Krystin Jarvis needed to make only four saves to keep the opposition scoreless as well. Instead of 24 shots all being for naught, the 23 shots on goal at Lebanon Catholic on Wednesday afternoon netted six goals for the Braves. Alyssa Yoder scored two of those goals while fellow seniors Katelyn Keen and Lindsey Hoover as well as sophomore Megan Yoder each registered one goal and one assist. Megan Rogers also scored while Baleigh Henshaw chipped in with an assist. For Jarvis, the job was even easier in this match as she snagged one save for a shutout. The Braves improved to 13-1-2 overall (9-1-1 league) by wrapping up the week with a 5-1 victory at Lancaster Country Day. “We’ve been focused on each game and have had success so far to have us in line to win the section,” head coach Peter Bennett said. “We’re pretty much tied with Lancaster Catholic who’s 8-1-1.” Glick had four saves in the Annville-Cleona game on Monday and needed to snag only one shot away from the crossing the plane in Wednesday’s home game. “We’ve been trying a couple of new things offensively, but you have to make sure your defense in order,” Bennett said. “It’s going to get tougher from here on out.” On offense, T.J. Hershey scored twice at A-C, registering both of his goals before the match was five minutes old. He went on to assist on two more goals as Elijah Elkins, Josh Gingrich and Nevin Stoltzfus each scored once - all of which came in the first half. Bennett Nordhoff registered an assist. Johan Gomez-Mendez each had one goal and two assists while Josh Bailey scored twice - once in each half. “Johan is one of our junior varsity players,” Bennett explained. “We’ve been having enough success to have our jayvee guys get some experience here and there. You need to rely on that depth as you’re getting into the post-season.” Hershey, Josh Heirich and Evan Johns each had one goal and one assist while Dylan Ratjavong chipped in with one assist. With a 3-0 halftime lead in Friday’s match, the Braves cruised to a win at LCD. Hershey scored early in this game also, putting PV up 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. He scored again at the midway mark of the first half. Bailey scored a quick two minutes following Hershey’s second goal while Heinrich added two second-half goals. He and Bailey each notched an assist as well. It was senior Rafael Juarez keeping the Cougars in check. The goalie recorded two saves in the win. PENNYSAVER with an 8-1-1 league mark and are on Pequea’s heels. Also, as the post-season draws closer and closer, the Braves find themselves fourth in the District Three Class-AA power rankings behind Lancaster Mennonite, Greenwood and Fleetwood while Lancaster Catholic is eighth. FOOTBALL Pequea Valley hosted an AnnvilleCleona football team that had outscored its opponents 212-109 in its previous six games, compiling a 4-2 record (2-1 in league). The Little Dutchmen had also been involved in a few high-scoring contests and Friday’s Section Three game was another one in which they succeeded in doing so, defeating the Braves 54-18. Pequea Valley fell to 0-7 on the year (0-6 in LL League) while the Dutchmen improved to 5-2, 5-1. Annville-Cleona quarterback Jeremy Bours ran for two touchdowns, gaining 77 yards on the ground Friday night, while completing seven passes for 105 yards. Caleb Tuner was the game’s leading rusher with a 100 yards and scoring twice. “What makes them explosive is that they’re good in all phases and their precision on offense makes them tough to play against,” said head coach Mike Choi. “You have to play disciplined football. You have to know what you’re looking at in order to play at a high level.” As is often the case in high school
football, a momentum swing just before halftime becomes a critical turning point. This was the case with A-C ahead 26-6 following Macrae Plummer’s second field goal of the game, the Dutchmen kicked off with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter. The Braves’ miscue on the return attempt, however, turned into the break the Dutchmen needed to ride the wave of momentum into the locker room. “They kicked the ball off with less than a minute left and we fumbled it,” Choi explained. “They got a short field and scored a back-breaking touchdown. It took the momentum away from us. “We had made some adjustments on defense and thought we would get out of the half down 26-6,” he added. On the second play of the short drive, Bours scored with a two-yard quarterback keeper, making it 33-6. Choi started Colin Bailey at quarterback. He connected with Dalton Temple on a 50-yard touchdown pass for the Braves’ only touchdown of the first half. Dylan Jackson, who finished with 81 yards rushing on 10 carries, scored twice in the second half, including a 56-yard dash. “Colin Bailey started and called a really good game for a first start,” Choi commented. “We had another near miss where if we had gotten the play off, we might have had a touchdown. But one of our guys was called

Since its genesis in 2010, Prima, a contemporary theater organization in Lancaster, has performed at more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Being nomadic has limited performance dates, consumed nearly one-third of the organization’s annual budget, and depleted nearly 40 percent of staff time, while also inconveniencing audiences. To address this challenge, Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, as well as Sequinox, has made visionary investments toward Prima acquiring a home in the western part of Lancaster city. Formerly known as the Hamilton Ballroom, the new Prima venue, located at 941 Wheatland Ave. in Lancaster, offers 125 free parking spaces with a 200-person capacity. The space will offer flexible seating and staging arrangements, including in-the-round, thrust, and proscenium setups. With the design and construction leadership of TONO Group, Prima’s new home is undergoing a

Contributions are now being sought for investments in furthering the Prima experience for the Lancaster community. Gifts to FWD will expand artistic programming and support artists, including student internships and local performers. Prima launched the announcement of the new venue with a music video. To view the video or to donate, readers may visit www.primaFWD.org.

Cemetery Plans Volunteer Trainings The historic Lancaster Cemetery, 205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, will hold Collaborate for a Cause from Monday to Wednesday, Oct. 22 to 24. Volunteers, preservation advocates, and conservation specialists will have the opportunity to share their time, talent, and skills to make a difference at Lancaster Cemetery. Like many graveyards, Lancaster Cemetery relies on volunteers to assist with beautification, cleanup, and grave marker repairs. Under the direction of conservator Robert Mosko, volunteers will be introduced to the baseline knowledge, theory, techniques, and materials that underpin gravestone preservation. Volunteers will receive free hands-on training in cleaning headstones, repair practices, and resetting fallen monuments. Enthusiasts will also be introduced to basic grave marker documentation, cleaning solutions and work practices. People of all skill levels may participate. The daily training sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Oct. 22, Mosko will lead a full-day lecture and classroom instruction addressing cemetery safety, subsidence and erosion, landscape restoration and maintenance, types and styles of gravestones, weathering and deterioration processes, and condition assessments and documentation practices. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Oct. 24, Mosko will guide participants through the handling, moving, and resetting of historic gravestones including basic engineering and rigging, raising and lifting sensitive markers, setting techniques, and setting materials and compounds. Assisting Mosko in the workshop will be Robert Myers from Grave Keepers, located in Jeannette. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves and wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for varying weather conditions. Participants are also responsible for providing their own meals, lodging, and transportation to and from Lancaster Cemetery. Mosko has worked in more than 78 cemeteries across the country, restoring, repairing, and preserving more than 7,000 gravestones and monuments. Participants may register for one, two, or all three workshop days. For more information and to make reservations, readers may contact Jerry Smoker at jsmoker@msn.com or call 717-490-2001.

School Safety Grants Posted The new School Safety and Security Grant Program - established as part of the 2018-19 state budget package - is now open for applications. Schools interested in applying for grants to help with safety equipment and resources should submit applications by Friday, Oct. 12, to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, which administers the new program. A total of $52 million in grant funding will be provided to school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools, charter schools, and private residential rehabilitative institutions for a wide variety of projects to improve school safety. The grants can be used for any of 22 specific school safety initiatives listed in the legislation, including such things as hiring school security officers, purchasing securityrelated technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students, and other programs and services to protect students. The grant money will be distributed geographically, with no school district receiving more than 10 percent (but eligible for at least $25,000) of the available funds. The money is expected to be distributed by March 2019. To apply or for more information, readers may visit www.pccd.pa.gov and look under the Funding tab for Current Open Funding Opportunities.

At the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) board of trustees Aug. 21 meeting, longterm president Dr. Peter W. Teague announced his plan to retire from the presidency on Aug. 1, 2019, upon completion of his 20th year as lead servant of LBC. He is the third longestserving seated president of the 97 independent colleges and universities in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During Teague’s presidency, Lancaster Bible College tripled in size, now offering three doctoral programs; seven master’s programs, including a seminary program; and 25 undergraduate majors. The college has grown from its main Manheim Township
location to five locations in four states and an initiative in Uganda, and it has expanded the main campus with 17 major building projects including a learning commons named in Teague’s honor. LBC has also launched online education programming. Having achieved national recognition from the Association of Biblical Higher Education and The Wall Street Journal, LBC has emerged from a quiet existence to one of growing prominence. Teague and his wife, Paulette, have four children and 10 grandchildren. The board of trustees has established a presidential search committee as the college seeks its next president.

Recycle-Bowl Competition Posted Registration is open for the 2018 Recycle-Bowl. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful encourages educators in Pennsylvania to get their students involved in Keep America Beautiful’s Recycle-Bowl competition, which is a program designed to revitalize student participation in recycling through a national recycling competition for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The objectives of the competition include the establishment of new recycling programs within schools, the increase of recycling rates in schools that currently recycle, and the provision of teacher/student educational opportunities about recycling and waste reduction. The Recycle-Bowl competition will run from Monday, Oct. 15, through America Recycles Day, Thursday, Nov. 15. In 2017, Albert M.
