Local Author Publishing Two New Books BY ANN MEAD ASH

J.

Arthur Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” has recently published his first new book in six years, and he plans to have another book out later this fall. “West to Freedom,” which was released in September, is the story of best friends who in 1862 embark on a journey to free one of them from the bonds of slavery. “Summer in Stewart Creek,” due out by early November, transports a young man from his hometown of Baltimore to the fictitious town of Snow Shoe, W.Va., in the summer of 1879. “West to Freedom,” was written prior to 2010. Moore called the 56page story more of a novella or extended short story than a book. Set in northwest Arkansas, the tale follows Thomas Reynolds and his best friend, Daniel Russell, who was born into slavery. W hen Thomas learns Daniel is in danger of being sold, he and his father plan to help Daniel escape west to the Cherokee nation. “The story is

totally fiction and the only thing I have ever done that directly involves slavery,” said Moore. Moore taught school for more than 40 years, and his students who were photographed for the cover art for “West to Freedom,” John Rivera as Daniel Russell and Thomas Ristine as Thomas Reynolds, are now grown. “Summer at Stewart Creek,” which is more than 100 pages, is based on campers Moore met at a camp on Cape Cod in 1979. “This book is totally unrelated to anything else I have done,” mused Moore. A model railroad enthusiast, who serves as vice president of the Short Line Club in Ephrata, Moore based the setting on the layout in his basement, using realistic-looking photos at the ends of chapters. “All (the story) is imaginary,” said Moore, “including the Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia.” “Summer” is the story of 12-yearold Brett Tompkins who finds himself in West Virginia when his father, a banker, takes over the

Entering the Bench Mark facility on East Liberty Street in Lancaster is a little like entering a secret club. A short hallway leads to a door that opens into a room filled with serious weightlifting equipment. The brightly colored walls are covered with graffiti-like artwork paying homage to superheroes.

The pandemic has resulted in a significant increase in families looking into and plunging into camping during the summer of 2020. For fall, that trend does not seem to be slowing much, and fall weather is often ideal for camping activities. Scot Ash, general manager of Shady Maple RV in East Earl, has seen a 50% increase in sales over 2019, and he said that the majority of those sales involved first-time buyers. “RVing is an alternative

“Family History Heyday Planned

Church Slates Freedom 5K

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) will hold a Family History Heyday, a new, one-day virtual experience for both curious hobbyists and committed researchers. Guests may take in one or both of the online sessions offered on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

In the past five years, Freedom Life Church has raised more than $30,000 through the Freedom 5K, proceeds of which were donated to A21, a nonprofit organization working to end human trafficking.

Darvin Martin will start the event with “Using Ancestry.com’s Newest Feature DNA ThruLines to Enhance Family History. The ThruLines tool compares an individual’s family tree with the results from his or her DNA matches and finds potential additional ancestors. The afternoon keynote by John Brown

will delve into “Little Known Facts About Colonial Lancaster County. Brown will focus on the diversity of the early settlers who sought religious freedom in Lancaster County. There is a cost per livestream. Readers may register at www.bit.ly/Family HistoryHeyday or call 717-393-9745.

GIRLS’ TENNIS In a Section Three battle, it was the Braves of Pequea Valley defeating the Octorara Braves 7-0 on Friday, October 2. Pequea improved to 6-3 (5-3 league) while Octorara fell to 2-2 (2-2) It was a total team effort by Pequea, including contributions on both singles and doubles competition by Adalie Clemmer, Michaela Sheets, Rebecca Cox and Kiersten Ann Winey. At number one doubles, Sheets and Clemmer combined for an 8-4 win - the same margin of victory for Maya Jaclyn Fritz and Josephine Newnam at third doubles. Winey and Cox claimed the number two doubles by an 8-1 score. Clemmer and Winey took the number one and number two singles, respectively, in straight sets, Clemmer winning 6-1, 6-0 and Winey going 6-2, 6-2. Sheets had a tough third singles, prevailing with 7-5, 6-4 scores. Cox wrapped up the shutout with 6-3, 6-0 victories. FOOTBALL The Elco Raiders’ offense proved to be highly explosive on Friday, October 2 in a road game for Pequea Valley’s football team. The Raiders, coming off a 40-point output the previous week, outscored the visiting Braves 53-14. Jake Williams scored two rushing touchdowns and Luke Williams added two more, pacing the Raiders (3-0; 2-0 league). Luke Williams also caught an 85-yard touchdown pass from Braden Bohannon. It was his only pass attempt of the night. The Elco quarterback also ran for a pair of

As for the appreciation of good soccer regardless of capitalizing on scoring opportunities, Bennett said, “Aside from the scoring, it was the best soccer we’ve played this season as we continue to progress. “I’m pleased that with only four games in, we have a group that has nine new starters and is starting to gel and play as a team,” continued the coach. “Our rivalry with Lancaster Catholic has produced a number of tight games in recent years and this was no exception. This says a lot about the coachability and character of this group. “Josh Jarvis and Dylan Ratjavong played well in the center midfield and helped create a number of opportunities for our attack,” Bennett added. Going the distance in this marathon match was Nehemiah Glick in goal. He made 10 saves. “Nehemiah had one of his strongest games in goal and really took command of the goal area by coming out for crosses and making himself big, which gives our defense a lot of confidence,” Bennett said.

The Pequea girls’ soccer team played to a scoreless draw on Saturday, October 3 in its nonleague match with Lancaster Mennonite. The Monday match with Lancaster Catholic also went scoreless for the first 40 minutes. Freshman Kendyl Keen changed the course of the game 10 minutes into the second half, giving Pequea Valley a 1-0 lead. Caroline Fisher scored in the 72nd minute of the 2-0 victory, improving the Braves’ record to 2-1-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (3-2-1 overall). “It was scoreless at the half and LC was strong at the back,” head coach Steve Morris explained. “We got a crossing ball through the box which Kendall finished for her first varsity goal.

“We had an excellent game against Lancaster Catholic,” added the coach. “All of the girls contributed to a great win. Our defense was really on their game, backing up and supporting each other all night.” Maddy Weaver, who recorded two saves in the scoreless tie, grabbed four saves in the LC shutout. BOYS’ SOCCER The sport of soccer is a peculiar one. It isn’t for everyone to understand and appreciate if one is merely looking for rapid scoring. An aficionado of the sport can appreciate the methodical ball control, great goal tending, the precision of corner kicks and the exciting build up for scoring chances about as much as the goals themselves. That was the case of the Section Four boys’ soccer game played at Pequea Valley between the Braves and the visiting Crusaders of Lancaster Catholic. The match went into double overtime before the Crusaders (4-1-0; 4-0-0 league) scored in the final minute for a 1-0 victory. “We had some really good opportunities to win it before losing the way we did - the last thirty seconds of the second overtime,” head coach Peter Bennett commented. “Their goal to win it came off a redirected free kick.” The Braves suffered their first loss as they fell to 3-1-0 (2-1-0 league).

As the keynote speaker, Dow will reflect on the challenges MCC has experienced over the past 100 years and the strengths God developed in the organization as a result. With inspiration from Scripture, he will encourage MCC to use its best self to step boldly into the next century of ministry. Dow is a former MCC staff member and board leader. MCC began in 1920 when groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development, and strengthens peacebuilding initiatives in more than 50 countries. To coincide with the celebration, MCC is inviting congregations to receive a special offering to support MCC’s ministry. Congregations are welcome to plan offerings at their convenience. More details are available at www.mcc.org/centennial /offering. To learn more and sign up for a calendar reminder, readers may visit mcc.org /celebration-2020.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the U.S. invites its supporters and the public to join a livestreamed celebration of its 100 years of ministry on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:50 p.m. Celebration 2020: MCC at 100 will include videos, storytelling, music, and a message from longtime MCC leader and pastor Leonard Dow of Philadelphia. The celebration also will include stories of MCC’s history told by storyteller Ken Sensenig, who is assistant director of MCC East Coast. Marcella Hostetler of Lancaster, who taught music in schools and directed music in churches for 30 years, is coordinating musical performances for the event in cooperation with a variety of musicians. This event replaces an inperson, multi-day celebration that was originally scheduled for June in Lancaster County. That event was postponed due to the pandemic and is now a livestreamed service only. Participants can join the celebration at www.mcc.org/ celebration-2020. Video recordings of the event, subtitled in English and Spanish, will be posted at the same link a few days after the event.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. Get registered to vote. If you’re registered already, decide how you’ll vote. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

However, the safety factors and other benefits of camping can be achieved without “glamping,” as RVing is sometimes called. ELANCO-area residents and hiking buddies Laura Zimmerman and Jessica Zimmerman, who are related through Laura’s dad and Jessica’s grandmother, do not hesitate to hit the trail for as long as 10 days with up to 35 pounds of clothes, food, water and other supplies, including a tent, on their backs. The young women often camp well into the fall and as early as April, braving temperatures that can drop into the teens. Laura noted that to keep the food supplies light, they take along a lot of pasta and rice, and they carry dried beef. Laura uses a dehydrator to prepare food ahead for them to take along. Jessica noted that enjoying the journey in nature is a focus of the hiking trips. “When I am out backpacking, it would be a disappointment if I went home without seeing any wildlife,” said Jessica, who notes she is especially on the lookout for rattlesnakes and copperhead snakes, but
