Holiday Bazaar Will Support Local Organizations By Ann Mead Ash

PEQ

In the past, the mission committee of Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church has sent church members to perform mission work in Jerusalem, Guatemala, and Waxhaw, N.C., the home of JAARS, Wycliffe Bible Translators, and SIL International. This year, when the church holds its annual bazaar, the funds that are raised will be designated for local ministries and

organizations. The 2019 holiday bazaar will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The bazaar will feature food and more than 20 vendors selling craft items and products offered by home-based businesses. Among the many vendors at the bazaar will be those that sell makeup, personal care items, cooking utensils and accessories, children’s books, food See Holiday Bazaar pg 2

Betty Snyder (left) and Margaret Sensenig are working to organize the annual holiday bazaar at Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church. This year’s event, which will raise money for local organizations, will be held at the church on Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Friday, Oct. 18, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) will hold its annual homecoming celebration. The 2019 homecoming queen will be crowned during halftime of the varsity football game against Donegal High School, which will begin at 7 p.m. The 2018 homecoming queen, Ellie Bryce, will crown the 2019 queen at the conclusion of the ceremony. A homecoming dance will be held at the high school on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. The 10 LCHS homecoming queen candidates are Nuo Chen, Bedei Gibala, Sydney Kirchner, Claudia Linkey, Zoe Orihuel, Sommer Reeser, Kelixa Rivera, Kat Sahd, Angelle San Jose, and Hannah Schmidt. Creating Comfort And Warmth For Veterans By Ann Mead Ash

The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans do not meet on a regular basis. The two women who oversee the program, Jean Summers and Kathy Baker, coordinate picking up quilts and afghans from members and then see that the comforters are delivered to one of four area hospice centers to be distributed to veterans. However, on a summer morning, 14 members of the group gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Holland to get better acquainted and discuss a possible future fundraiser that is being planned with the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA), which helps to support the group. During the meeting, Baker and Summers explained briefly how the organization started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. See Patriotic Stitchers pg 4 The

The small cast, which includes fewer than 20 students, has meant the actors and crew have had a chance to develop camaraderie. “It’s fun to interact with each other on and off stage,” said Megan. “We are pretty tight knit.” Schnabel said that overall, the tragedy has been a challenge to stage but that he feels a sense of accomplishment. “When a scene is over, it’s a relief … you’re tired,” he said. “It was really tough, but I am glad I did it.” Tickets for the play may be purchased at www.lancaster mennonite.org under the Fine Arts tab or by calling 717-7402456 or emailing boxoffice@ lancastermennonite.org. “Don’t do stuff behind your parents’ backs. This is an example of how tragically wrong that can go.” Josiah agreed. “(Romeo and Juliet’s) problems snowball throughout the show,” he said, warning, “Problems can snowball if you don’t address them.” The cast members are also having fun preparing to stage the show, which will be presented in a canyon format, with the audience on stage with the actors. “The nurse is an extreme character,” explained Megan. “She doesn’t have a setting between really happy and really upset, so I have to get into the character before I enter the scene and then hold an extreme emotion during the dialogue.” “I am getting really immersed in the play,” said Josiah. “We get to know the play really well, and

When director Dean Sauder chose “Romeo and Juliet” as the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) fall play, he wanted to present the show to audiences who may have never seen the entire play, and he set it in the present with contemporary scenes of students in high school using cellphones. Megan Esch, who plays the Nurse, has caught Sauder’s vision. “I feel a lot of people (think) Shakespeare is old and boring, but a lot of this show is really funny,” she said. “I want people who come to see it to have a new understanding of Shakespeare.” “Romeo and Juliet” will be staged at LMHS in the Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17; Friday, Oct. 18; and Saturday, Oct. 19. A matinee performance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Leads in the tragic tale of starcrossed lovers from feuding families will include Noah Schnabel as Romeo and Noelle Stringer as Juliet. Josiah Esch will play Friar Lawrence. Cast members began working on memorizing their lines early in the summer, and Schnabel said he was concerned that audiences might be confused by the original Shakespearean dialogue in a modern setting. However, once rehearsals began, the depth of the subject matter moved to the forefront. “A lot of wrong choices are made,” noted Megan, adding that

Both Baker and Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Each woman who attended the meeting was asked to introduce herself to the others and tell how she became involved. Ronnie Miller told the group that she quilts and was working with another group called Cradle Stitchers. “I have made 35 quilts for veterans,” she noted. Baker and Summers said that they will keep track of the number of pieces each group member turns in. Barbara Schrodi said that she has been making blankets for

veterans for two years. “I find it very relaxing,” she said. “It’s creative, and you’re doing it for a good purpose.” Other members of the group noted that they love to crochet and that making the blankets is a nice pastime. Each of the women brought a recently completed quilt or afghan to be given to a veteran. Each piece incorporated red, white, and blue in some way. When a blanket is donated, Baker or Summers affixes a label to it that reads: “Thank you for your service to our country. Made for you especially by,” followed by the maker’s first name and final initial and then the group’s name. Each blanket is photographed when it is

received, and the photo is placed in an album. The organization now boasts about 35 volunteers, mostly recruited from area churches, but they are always in need of more volunteers who can crochet, knit, or sew. When the organization first began donating blankets, the creations went to one hospice in Lancaster and the Lebanon VA Hospital. Currently, the Stitchers are taking blankets

to AseraCare Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Services, and Hospice and Community Care. Group members are grateful for the help they receives from ULTWMA, but they will accept monetary donations and donations of red, white, and blue fabric or yarn, batting, or other material. Readers who would like to donate stitching time, funds, or material to the group may call 717-553-3161 or 484-888-3772.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9x13” pan with coconut oil or nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. In a medium-sized pan (or mediumsized bowl in microwave), melt coconut oil on low heat. Add in sugar and stir for a couple minutes to dissolve some sugar (all sugar will not be dissolved...be sure to not overcook). Take off heat and pour mixture in a medium-sized bowl. Stir in cocoa powder, salt, baking powder, and vanilla. Whisk in eggs, until smooth, then add the flour and chocolate chips, stirring to combine. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean. (I used a stoneware pan to bake, so I baked mine on the longer side--32 minutes.) Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, will host fundraisers for collective and personal causes, as well as several other events. A chicken potpie dinner will take place on Friday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall, 46 W. Main St., and a benefit for a church member with leukemia will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 5 to 10 p.m. in the pole barn behind the church. A vendor, craft, and antique show has been set for Saturday, Nov. 23, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Oct. 25 dinner will feature “real, Lancaster County potpie,” said church member Kay Graybill. “With noodles. It’s not a pie,” added church member Wanda Albright. Diners will also be served peas, coleslaw, rolls, and assorted desserts. In lieu of an admission price, donations will be accepted for the meal. Quarts of potpie will be available for takeout at a set cost. Readers with questions about the dinner may call Albright at 717-786-4735. The proceeds from the potpie dinner and the vendor, craft, and antique show will support the “Raise the Roof ” campaign, which will pay the cost to replace the rubber roof on the fellowship hall, which Graybill estimated is at least 20 years old. The church is also starting to increase its capital fund. Graybill noted that the church building was constructed in 1894 for the cost of $12,500 and without taking on debt. “We would like to be debt-free (on future projects),” she added. Anyone who would like to be a vendor at the Nov. 23 show may call Graybill at 717-371-8753. The Nov. 2 event has been organized by church member Vickie Buller to benefit Mike and Candi Oster, Wesley members and active philanthropists. “She has helped with lots of other fundraisers in Lancaster County over the past 10 years,” Buller said. “Now it’s her turn (to feel the support).” Candi was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, but while medication controlled it, the disease changed in March this year. Her best hope for survival and remission is a bone marrow transplant from her brother, and she was set to undergo the procedure on Oct. 8 in Philadelphia. Even if her recovery goes as planned, Candi, who is employed by the Conestoga Valley High School, will be out of work for a year. In order to help lessen the financial burden, church members have organized a family-friendly fundraiser on Nov. 2. A small cover charge may be paid at the door, which will give attendees access to music, dancing, billiards, air hockey, and prize drawings. A children’s area will offer crafts. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, and the menu will include meatball sandwiches, hot dogs, fried chicken, Spanish rice, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, and desserts. PV Boys’ Win Section Four Soccer Crown by Ara Grigorian

The boys’ soccer team clinched the Section Four crown before the muchanticipated regular season finale at home against Lancaster Catholic - the second-place team in the section. The Crusaders did win in convincing fashion against two L-L League opponents by a combined score of 10-0 down the stretch and lost a non-league match to Wyomissing. However, the Braves’ victory over Lancaster Country Day on October 4, raised the team’s mark to 11-0-0 in the league while Catholic entered that regular season finale with a 9-1-1 league record. On the same day that the girls’ team lost a heartbreaking overtime game to Lancaster Country Day, the boys’ team topped the Cougars in the same fashion. Brandon Ratjavong scored three minutes into overtime off a Nevin Stoltzfus assist for the 1-0 win. The Pequea defense held the Cougars to only one shot on goal - a shot Nehemiah Glick handled easily. Mike Korenkiewicz had three saves for LCD. In a double overtime game on Monday, October 7, Lancaster Mennonite slipped past PV by a 2-1 marPhoto by Bob Devonshire gin. That was when Owen Nell scored his second goal of the game to finish a comeback win for the Mennonite side. The Blazers had tied the game with only three minutes left in regulation. The Stoltzfus-to-Ratjavong connection was the scoring play for Pequea in the 33rd minute - a lead that held up for 44 minutes. The Braves fell to 14-3-0 overall and were fifth in the District Three Class-AA power rankings heading into Thursday night’s match with Lancaster Catholic. On Wednesday, the Braves wrapped up an unbeaten (12-0-0) regular season campaign against league opponents by defeating Lancaster Catholic 3-1. With the section crown already secured, the Braves did not coast through the season finale. It was a close match, with Danny Biodolillo’s goal tying the score for Catholic four minutes into the second half. The Crusader goal came only one minute after Josh Gingerich had given Pequea Valley the 1-0 edge. The Braves, behind the solid goalkeeping of sophomore Jazae Maina-Itegi (4 saves) held on until Josh Bailey scored the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute. Stoltzfus made it 3-1 two minutes later. Ratjavong and Bennett Nordhoff each notched an assist. FOOTBALL Trevor Porche proved to be a testament to the nostalgic movie line touting the eponymous sports car. “There is no substitute.” The Annville-Cleona tailback rushed for 174 yards on 22 carries in the Little Dutchmen’s 45-0 Section Three victory at home over Pequea Valley on Monday afternoon. The game had been postponed from its originally scheduled date of Friday, October 4.

Andrew Weaver rushed for 36 yards for the Braves. Antonio Lazar gained 18 on the ground while Nate Fisher completed three passes for 33 yards and no interceptions. Collin Bailey was on the receiving end of two passes for a total of 30 yards. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Pequea girls’ soccer team suffered a tough L-L League loss on Friday, October 4 as Lancaster Country Day edged the Braves 1-0 in overtime. The Braves out-shot the home team 13-7 over the course of the marathon match. Maddy Weaver was solid between the posts for Pequea. Grace Gardner’s goal off a Julia Mocny assist was the only shot to get past Weaver (five saves). Another tough loss followed with Wednesday’s match at Lancaster Catholic. “We lost 1-0 as they scored with two minutes remaining,” head coach Steve Morris explained after the game. “The girls played extremely well. I’m very proud of their efforts. “The refs missed a major call that should have resulted in a penalty kick for us with about 10 minutes left to play,” Morris pointed out. “But all in all, the girls played well.” Zoe Orihuel scored in the 78th minute with an assist from Maria Martin. It was the only shot to get past Weaver, who made 19 saves in this tough match. “She had a fantastic night and has had a great season,” commented the coach. “She’s only a sophomore.” Pequea fell to 7-4-1 in the league and into fourth place behind the Crusaders (10-1-1), Annville-Cleona (7-3-1) and Northern Lebanon (8-4-0) in the Section Four standings. TENNIS Adelle Clemmer suffered a second-round loss to eventual champion Riley Smith of Lancaster Catholic in the L-L League Tennis Tournament Flight One Class-AA singles championships. She won the first set 6-4 but fell in the next two sets as Ginder went on to claim fifth place. Smith and Angelie San Jose were the Flight One Class-AA doubles champions. Clemmer and senior Hope Fisher withdrew in the second round against the eventual champs. In Flight Two singles, Lexy Lassak doubled up Taylor Douple of Northern Lebanon 6-4, 6-2 but fell to Allie Bender of Elco in a close battle. Bender won 6-3, 7-6 (4). Flight Three singles saw Kiersten Winey cruise into the semis with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Ephrata’s Ashlyn Mazzaocchi and a 7-5, 7-5 defeat of Manheim Central’s Maddie

Moyer. Flight Three champion Sophia Steed of Conestoga Valley halted Winey’s quest in the semis 6-2, 6-2. Lassak and Jessica Hurst were unable to get past the opening round of Flight Two doubles. GOLF Josiah Nissley has been having a fine season pacing Pequea’s golf team. The senior golfer will continue to represent Pequea Valley as the PIAA East Regionals take place thanks to his showing in the District Three Class-AA Championships at Briarwood East on Friday and Saturday, October 4-5. He finished in a two-way tie for sixth place with James Buchanon’s Caleb Reath. Both golfers shot 162 in the 36-hole, two-day championships. Nissley had a 10-over-par 81 on both days.

YWCA Honorees Announced YWCA Lancaster has announced the six honorees for the Women of Achievement Awards Luncheon, and Dr. Tererai Trent will be the keynote speaker. On Aug. 26, Trent was honored as one of the 10 most inspirational women in the world with a life-size statue at the Statues for Equality event in New York City. Trent grew up in a cattleherding family in rural Zimbabwe. She did not have the opportunity to go to school, so she taught herself to read and write from her brother’s schoolbooks. Despite being married young and having three children by the time she was 18, she never lost sight of her dreams of going to America for higher education. She eventually earned multiple degrees, and she has a global platform with world leaders and international businesses and audiences where she advocates for universal access to quality education. Trent has published two books, won the 2018 NAACP Award for Outstanding Literary Work, and improved education for more than 6,000 children. Heart Walk Raises Funds More than 1,000 walkers turned out at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium on Sept. 21 for the 2019 Lancaster Heart Walk, presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LGH). The event raised $243,000 for the American Heart Association.

Local news personality Anne Shannon and event chair Bernadette Taylor, senior executive vice president and chief human resources officer of Fulton Financial Corporation, hosted the opening festivities. Activities included health information, blood pressure checks, chil-

dren’s activities and healthy snacks along the walk route. Among the participants was 3-yearold congenital heart defect survivor Emmett Musselman and his parents, Doriana and Nate, of Lancaster city. Emmett was diagnosed in utero at 21 weeks with a

congenital heart defect called double inlet left ventricle. He underwent a series of three open heart surgeries after he was born, the first when he was just 32 hours old, the second at 4 months old and the third at just over 2 years old. Emmett will have to continue seeing a cardiologist,

DAR, CAR Members Attend Meeting

Local Group Helps International Fight Against Trafficking By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Steve Thurston was riding the subway in Philadelphia when he saw something suspicious. At first, he thought that he was observing a father with his troublesome teenage daughter, but the more he paid attention, the more he could tell his initial assumption was incorrect. The pair left the train heading in one direction, and Steve headed in another. The incident stuck with him, however, and he told his wife, Amy, about it when he arrived home later that day. They agreed that Steve had probably witnessed an incident of human trafficking. “He realized he missed an opportunity (to intervene),” Amy said. At the time, the Thurstons were living in King of Prussia. Steve had a marketing and advertising background. Amy had worked in higher education for 15 years, and she had supported girls who had been raped or abused. The couple decided that together, they could make an impact on preventing human trafficking, particularly by identifying potential victims’ vulnerabilities and bolstering their confidence. The Thurstons moved to Lancast-

er because of the area’s high rate of human trafficking. They established Hope. Inspire. Love. in January 2017 in order to eradicate human trafficking and sexual exploitation. “Freedom is our legacy” is the organization’s motto. Amy has been busy speaking to teenagers aging out of foster care, high school students, parenting groups, and others in order to raise awareness about human trafficking and how young people can be tricked into it. “Teaching children they have a voice is huge,” Amy said. “The more you educate and make (transparency) a part of everyday life, the less they feel they have to keep things secret.” Recently, Amy expanded her scope to include law enforcement at the request of a police chief who said that he did not want his staff to become numb to prostitution. Amy explained that often sex workers wind up in that career because they were trafficked. Hope. Inspire. Love. also works alongside North Star Initiative and other intervention-effort operations to help rescue survivors and connect them with community groups and faith-based organizations that will help them recover.

The Thurstons have participated in the A21 Walk for Freedom in Harrisburg for the past three years. They are launching Lancaster’s first Walk for Freedom on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting from Binns Park, 120 N. Queen St., Lancaster, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and they hope to start another iteration of the event in Reading next year. Walk for Freedom is a global fundraising and awareness event started by A21, an international nonprofit organization that fights modern-day slavery. The walks look similar, no matter where they are held: Participants dressed in black and holding signs walk single file through the host city, distributing flyers containing information about human trafficking and ways to make change possible. Registration on Oct. 19 will open at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 9:30 a.m. The route of a little under 2 miles will take participants around downtown Lancaster. Indi-

viduals who are unable to complete that distance may opt instead to stay on-site at the park and distribute materials to passersby. Everyone with smartphones will be invited to listen to a podcast by Christine Caine that will relate how lives are saved because of the Walk for Freedom. There is no cost to participate, but donations for A21 will be accepted. Hope. Inspire. Love. will have a booth at the park where individuals may learn how they can get involved in local efforts to stop human trafficking and assist survivors. “We want to hear more people reporting (trafficking) and taking a stand so this doesn’t happen to our kids, our neighbors,” Amy said. To learn more about Hope. Inspire. Love. and the Walk for Freedom, readers may visit www.hopeinspirelove.org or email amy@hopeinspirelove.org.

Hope. Inspire. Love. will host the A21 Walk for Freedom starting from Lancaster’s Binns Park on Oct. 19. The event aims to raise awareness of human trafficking and funds for A21, an international organization fighting modern-day slavery.

Members of Lancaster’s Donegal Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), as well as two members who are also senior representatives of the George Ross Society, National Society Children of the American Revolution (NSCAR), attended a Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (PSSDAR) South Central District meeting on Aug. 24. The event was hosted by the Witness Tree DAR Chapter at the Donegal Springs Presbyterian Church Solarium. The PSSDAR South Central District spans 13 counties in addition to Lancaster County, and representatives of DAR Chapters and CAR Societies from the various counties attended the meeting to network as volunteers and leaders. They also sought to raise awareness and funds for the newest PSSDAR state service project: the restoration of the Robert Morris stained-glass window at the George Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. The chapel was built as a living memorial to President George Washington; its art and architecture describe American history. Pennsylvania state regent Elizabeth Watkins, the keynote speaker, shared how water has eroded the chapel’s stone carvings, stained the walls, and damaged the windows. The Donegal DAR Chapter of Lancaster County was organized

Lancaster’s Donegal Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution/Children of the American Revolution leaders who attended a district meeting on Aug. 24 include (from left) Cheri Weakley, Suzanne Landis, regent Sue McClure, Ann Carter, Carol Elfner, and Beth Valentin.
