Eating in the dark can shed light on vision impairments BY ANN MEAD ASH

aradise Lions Club member Heather Valudes is involved in an effort to help people understand different levels of vision impairment. “It’s easier to simulate having no vision,” Valudes pointed out, “but it’s hard to simulate these conditions that degenerate vision and what is the impact of that and how you move through the world with that,” she said. The Paradise Lions Club’s sixth Dinner in the Dark aims to teach attendees about the subject by giving diners a unique opportunity to eat a meal with limited or no vision. This year’s dinner will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m. at W hite Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. In addition to the meal, there will be presentations by VisionCorps, which will benefit from the dinner. A silent auction, which will feature

up to 35 items, will be held during the reception. “A representative from VisionCorps will give an overview of their work,” said Valudes, who noted that part of that presentation will include education about vision loss. “(A VisionCorps representative will discuss) how different vision impairment issues impact people in their daily lives,” she said. Each table will include implements diners can choose from to experience changes in vision. “We have blindfolds for anyone who wants to go for a fully dark experience,” Valudes said, adding that modified safety glasses will simulate a few different types of impairments such as macular degeneration. “(The dining experience provides) a better understanding of vision losses,” Valudes explained. “One simulates a very small field of vision and how that impacts (performing) daily tasks, eating, and moving through space.” She See Dinner in the Dark pg 3

Fall Fun Fest adds food contest and more

WordUP Community Ministries will again present a Trunk or Treat event, rain or shine, on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Dinner will be available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m., and then children will be able to visit decorated cars to gather Halloween candy from 6 to 8 p.m. During Trunk or Treat, which aims to offer a safe alternative to trick-or-treating door to door, children can travel from vehicle to vehicle collecting candy and treats.

Children are encouraged to dress in costume, and attendees should bring their own bags for collecting candy. Dogs on leashes will also be welcome; some cars may even provide pet treats. The D&Bz food truck will be on-site starting at 5 p.m. Food items that will be offered include cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos and beverages. “Tables will be set up so people can come and eat with their families,” said WordUP pastor Buck Mowday. “We encourage them to get supper.” Only cash will be accepted for food purchases. Asked what is new for the 17th annual Fall Fun Fest at Grace Point Church, organizer Kathy Gehman is quick with an answer. “We will have a food eating competition that will feature pie,” she said. “We are also having a costume contest for families and individuals, but no scary costumes or masks, please.” The 2023 Fall Fun Fest will be held at the church, 10 S. Singer Ave., Paradise, on Friday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Gehman reported that last year during the event, 5,000 pieces of candy were given away and 500 meals were served. A free meal will be available for each attendee who visits the welcome table to receive a ticket. See Grace Point Church pg 9 717-768-8811

WordUP Ministries from pg 1 Businesses and organizations are also invited to decorate trunks and promote their products and services or set up a table inside the fire hall. “People can decorate however they want. They can express their creativity,” said Mowday. There is no fee for vehicle owners, but they will be required to supply the candy. People interested in participating and handing out candy may call or text 717-330-0561 to reserve a spot. “We have plenty of room,” said Mowday, noting that registrations will be taken up to the day of the event. He noted that the first year the church hosted Trunk or Treat, activities were moved indoors because of rain. “The first year we had 300 kids come through, and we had 20 tables set up that year,” he said, adding that there is a goal to have additional vehicles featured this year. TWO DAY AND EARN

Church to host Freedom 5K, fun run and Trunk or Treat

GREEN TREE HARDWARE

Freedom Life Church invites individuals and families to Salisbury Township Community Park, commonly known as Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap, on Saturday, Oct. 21, for the Freedom 5K and fun run. Proceeds will support the fight against human trafficking. The morning will begin with the 5K run/walk at 9 a.m., which will consist of four laps on the paved trail around the park that meanders through trees and around playgrounds and athletic fields. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers. During the 5K, a free Kids’ Zone will be open, including inflatables, face painting, crafts, games and activities. Free concessions will be available for runners, walkers and all who attend.

Younger participants are encouraged to register for the fun run. Following the Freedom 5K, the fun run will begin by the pavilion and end between the tennis court and basketball court, which will serve as the entry to a Trunk or Treat hosted by FL Kids. The Trunk or Treat is open to the public, and registration for the fun run is not required. Volunteers will decorate the trunks of their vehicles in child-friendly themes and distribute candy to children. Costumes are encouraged, but not necessary. The Trunk or Treat will open at 10:30 a.m. and conclude by 11:30 a.m. Proceeds from the events will benefit All Things Possible Ministries, founded by Victor Marx.

Grace Point Church from pg 1 “We serve inside, but we have tables to eat outside,” said Gehman. Meals will include a choice of a pork barbecue sandwich or a hot dog, along with applesauce, chips, and a cookie. Additional meals will be available for purchase. As in the past, the emphasis at the fest will be on outdoor activities. Highlights will include inflatables, a petting zoo, live music, and carnival games. Candy is given away at each game station, and bags for candy are provided. The trick-or-treat alternative will also feature carnival games, a coffee bar, a campfire, and s’mores. Milkshakes will be available for purchase. Gehman pointed out that the event offers fun for people of all ages. “Anybody of any age is welcome,” she said. There is no admission fee to attend the event, and parking is free. For more information, readers may call 717-687-7971 or visit www.grace point paradise.com.

Bazaar from pg 4 be present, as will World War II survivor Eleanor Isaacson, author of “Dancing From Darkness,” which tells her story of being abandoned as a toddler in Nazi Germany. Author of “The Compass of the Beatitudes” and educator Terry Webb, who has written both historical fiction and nonfiction books, will also take part. Organizers plan to offer both breakfast and lunch foods for purchase. Individual breakfast casseroles made with potatoes, eggs, ham or bacon, and cheese, along with coffee, will be sold for breakfast. Hot dogs and chicken corn soup will be offered for lunch. Chicken corn soup will be sold by the bowl to eat at the bazaar or by the quart to take out. A variety of baked goods will be available as well. Burns reported that the mission committee members hope the sale will raise $2,000 for local organizations such as Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services as well as international ones such as JAARS Inc., a ministry associated with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-951-9717 for additional information.
