Grace Point Church Slates Annual Fun Fest By Ann Mead Ash
As Grace Point Church, 8 S. Singer Ave., Paradise, prepares to hold its 13th annual Fall Fun Fest, organizers can look back at serving thousands of free meals over the years. “We served 615 last year,” noted Kathy Gehman. Fellow organizer Melissa Zook added that more than 660 meals were served in 2016. Highlights of this year’s event, which will be held at the church on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., will include a 75-foot inflatable obstacle See Grace Point Church pg 7
Dean Sauder, director of the Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) production of “Seven Keys to Baldpate,” is at no loss for words when describing the show. “It’s mystery. It’s comedy. It’s melodrama. It’s farce,” stated Sauder, who added that the 1913 play by George M. Cohan has been on his shortlist for several years. With a cast of 18, an almost completely black-and-white set and costumes, and a couple of unexpected twists near the end, “Baldpate” will play in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25; Friday, See LMHS Play pg 6
HOPE International Breakfast To Have Dominican Flavor By Ann Mead Ash
When Carley Bilindabagabo, events coordinator with HOPE International, was asked about the speaker for the 2018 HOPE International breakfast, she responded with enthusiasm. “We have someone special this year: Alex Nuñez, president and CEO of Esperanza International, our partner program in the Dominican Republic,” said a smiling Bilindabagabo. The 2018 breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 7 a.m., and check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. This year, the event will be held on the same day as See HOPE Breakfast pg 3

“A Waiting Game” Kinzer Fire Company Members Gather To Make Sauerkraut By Ann Mead Ash
Lina, a client of Esperanza International, a partner of HOPE International in the Dominican Republic, runs a colmado, a convenience stand, in a bus station. Lina’s business has allowed her to support her family after her husband hurt his back. The HOPE International 2018 annual breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster.
Dwight Groff of the Kinzer Fire Company knows his sauerkraut. After all, he remembers the first pork and sauerkraut dinner the fire company held on New Year’s Day in 1978. The main purpose of gathering fire company members in the fall is to make sauerkraut for that meal, but the fire company has found that some area residents do not want to wait until the new year to taste the company’s kraut. “We make a total of five 30-gallon drums and five 50-gallon drums,” explained Groff. “We sell all the 30-gallon drums and two of the 50-gallon drums to the public.” The sauerkraut is scheduled to be sold at the fire company, See Sauerkraut pg 8
Dwight Groff of the Kinzer Fire Company is getting ready to put the 2018 batch of sauerkraut to bed. The kraut will ferment at a constant cool temperature for about six weeks, and then the fire company will offer some of it for sale in December and use some for a special pork and sauerkraut dinner on Jan. 1.

young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers. “Inside, we will have lots of children’s games,” said Shannon Martin, one of the committee members organizing the event. Martin listed cornhole, a rubber band game, a football toss game, a duck pond game, a golf putt game, and a lollipop toss game, along with face painting, among the activities that will be available inside the church. “There will be children’s prizes for every game,” she added, noting that pretzels, erasers, and stickers are examples of the prizes children will receive for playing the games. Outside the church, an inflatable obstacle course and a bounce house will be available, along with a corn dig. Live music outside will be provided by church members, and attendees may warm up around one of three fire pits or take part in a hayride.
Free food that will be given away outside the church will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream, and candy. Hot and cold beverages and snack foods, such as chips, will be given away as well. The idea behind the event, which will conclude at 8:30 p.m., is to offer a safe place for families to enjoy fun and fellowship. Costumes are welcome. Organizers noted that the 2017 event attracted 1,000 attendees, based on the number of soft pretzels that were given away. Approximately 150 church members help with the trick-or-treat alternative by working at the event or donating baked goods or candy and prizes. In the case of inclement weather, readers are encouraged to visit www.weaverland.org for information.

County’s largest day of online giving. In the Dominican Republic, where about 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty level, Esperanza provides a branch of HOPE that supports associates as they help themselves in an effort to alleviate poverty. Through savings groups, Esperanza can provide capital in a commitment to end poverty and foster transformation to those the organization serves. Nuñez began serving Esperanza in March 2012, when she became vice president of public affairs and Caribbean investment. Previously, Nuñez worked to coach and educate members of a major defense concern in every facet of business. She has a master’s degree from Belhaven College and bachelor’s degree from Eastern Mennonite University. She graduated from the Lifework Leadership Program in 2012. In the past several months, Bilindabagabo visited the Dominican Republic to see HOPE’s operations there firsthand. She was impressed by the number of women who are clients there. “We visited four clients, and three of the four were women,” shared Bilindabagabo, who especially remembered the story of Lina, a woman who ran a colmado, a convenience stand. “Her (colmado) was in a bus station, so she had constant traffic,”
noted Bilindabagabo. “It was the only place to buy a snack or bottle of water before getting on the bus, which I thought was genius.” Bilindabagabo said that Lina’s story was especially memorable because Lina’s daughter had also started a business, which now employs Lina’s husband, Felix, who had hurt his back and was unable to perform other work. “(Lina’s) daughter realized that her mother’s colmado always needed paper products like cups and napkins,” explained Bilindabagabo, “But it is hard to get them (in the Dominican Republic).” The daughter, wisely, chose to start her own business buying and reselling paper products at a store not far from the bus station. “The story struck me because the daughter decided to start her own business because she saw her mother do it - the generational effects of entrepreneurship,” commented Bilindabagabo. To add a Dominican flair to the breakfast, Bilindabagabo has arranged for the buffet menu to include coffee and juice from the Dominican Republic, along with eggs, sausage, hash browns, and pancakes. To learn more visit www.hope international.org/lancaster breakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Saturday, Nov. 10. Register by calling 717-464-3220, ext. 554, or emailing carley@hopeinternational.org.
Tournament from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a four-team men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III games. The men’s William Marshall Tip-Off Tournament will feature F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. A complete game schedule may be found at www.lancasterrotary.org/event/ basketball-extravaganze-2018. Since 1992, when Marshall
joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. Following the partnership, both organizations worked to grow the tournament, eventually moving to the weekend before Thanksgiving to “tip off ” the college basketball season. The tournament was only for men until 2006, when the Professor Terry Green Memorial Tournament added women’s teams to the mix. Proceeds from the Basketball Extravaganza will benefit the United Way’s Rotary Club of Lancaster Summer Youth Experience, a program that works to keep Lancaster youths engaged and productive. The Summer Youth Experience includes activities that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap,” Carrigan said. As the flagship fundraiser for
the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000. Almost all the funds that are raised are returned to the local nonprofit community. In addition to the Summer Youth Experience, the event has helped to fund International Medical Relief, including eye and dental care in international locations; the Elizabeth Martin Elementary School Park; School District of Lancaster programs that encourage literacy; Rotary Youth Leadership Camp; International Youth Study
Exchange; and a variety of scholarships and grants. Pictured on front: Rotary Club of Lancaster past president Lisa Groff (fourth from left) and Rotary Club of Lancaster/Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza chairman William Marshall (fourth from right) presented a check to Patty Epps (center), director of athletics at F&M, following the 2016 fundraiser. Another challenge was introducing students to comedy and dialogue set in the early 1900s. “Since it written in 1913 some of the lines you would not use today,” explained Schnabel. “It’s hard to say the words and put meaning behind them,” he added. “(It’s important to be) able to pronounce words and (convince) the audience that you know what they mean.” It has been interesting for the students to put on the personalities of over-the-top character roles. Rehearsals have been both fun and challenging, according to Merry Yirga, who plays Edith Quimby, an elderly caretaker. “A lot of us play characters that are very different from ourselves,” she observed. “I play an innkeeper who lives on top of a mountain and flirts with this writer.” Clayton Nafziger, who plays bad guy Jim Cargan, said that he has to think “mean” to get into character. Nafziger, who at 6 feet five inches is making it hard for Sauder to find costumes for him, noted that his size helped him win the part. “I pick up three different people (during the show),”’ said a smiling Nafziger. Willa Beidler, who plays Myra Thornhill, said that the students have been having fun with the outlandish characters and exaggerated scenes. “The character work is (both) fun and difficult,” she noted. “It’s a satirical show, so you’re taking a

Sauder has embraced the challenge of introducing the older-style production to students of the current day. He noted that writing the director’s
note for the show program has been a challenge. “(The play is) typical George M. Cohan, which means nothing to this generation,” said Sauder. “It does now,” quipped a grinning Yirga. Oct. 26; and Saturday, Oct. 27. The plot centers on writer William Magee, played by Noah Schnabel, who enters into a contest with his friend Irene Bentley, played by Grace Reinhart. The competition will have Magee writing a 10,000-word story within 24 hours, with Bentley providing him with a place of total solitude to complete the task. Magee heads to Baldpate Inn, a mountain getaway owned by Bentley. He locks himself in, with the understanding that he holds the only key. Almost immediately, Magee begins experiencing strange visitations. Among the intruders, all of whom seem to have keys to the inn, are a politician, a police officer, a hermit, a reporter, and a number of mobsters. Magee eventually learns that there are actually seven keys to Baldpate, and in the LMHS production, each key is a different rainbow color to contrast with the set and costumes. One of the challenges of staging the show, according to Sauder, was the decision to go blackand-white. “ We need an oldfashioned phone, and we have one, but it is brown,” explained Sauder, who said that his costumer is searching for appropriate clothing, and the crew is painting the set. “The costumes will be stunning,” noted Sauder.

Once the sauerkraut has slept long enough, fire company members remove it from the drums and pack it into two-, four-, and eight-pound containers for sale. “We also sell four-gallon pails,” stated Groff. “But most people buy the four- or eight-pounders.” Sauerkraut that is not sold during December is held for the special dinner that will greet 2019. “We reserve three 50-gallon drums for the New Year’s Day dinner,” said Groff, noting that the dinner will take place on Tuesday, Jan 1, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Groff added that the family-style meal will include mashed potatoes, baby carrots, chow-chow, beverages, and cake and ice cream, along with pork and sauerkraut. The Library System of Lancaster County has announced that this year Brad Rutter, alltime “Jeopardy!” champion, has donated funds that have been used to support Syndetics Unbound, which is an online catalog enhancement tool that is now available. In a clash of two Lancaster-Lebanon League football teams, the Ephrata Mountaineers came out on top Friday night at Pequea Valley, defeating the Braves 45-0. The Mountaineers, who had been in a number of high-scoring games this year, evened their L-L League record at 4-4 and improved to 4-5 overall. The Braves suffered their eighth league loss and fell to 0-9 overall. It was the second game in a row that the Braves were blanked. The previous week they suffered a 34-0 loss that was deceptive in that the Elco Raiders scored 20 of those points in the fourth quarter. “Against Elco, we had three series that were first-and-goal and we didn’t get it done,” noted head coach Mike Choi. The big handicap to overcome against the Mountaineers was the loss of workhorse running back Brandon Hershey, who was hurt prior to the game. “We kept him out for precautionary reasons,” Photo by Connor Hollinger Choi explained. “When you only have 20 players Photo by Connor Hollinger Pequea Valley’s Michael Beals eludes Ephrata’s Owen Morrongiello on a kickoff return on the roster and you’re facing a team with 43 The Braves’ Seth Gray sets up to block Ephrata’s Ethan Cooper during the Braves’ Homecoming game last Friday.

players, then you take a two-way starter out of the game, it’s not like you can just patch things together. It’s tough. “Early in the game we lost Luke Brown, our middle linebacker, and offensive lineman to a knee injury,” he added. “We were really scrambling after losing two two-way players.” The Mounts first scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Caden Keefer to Trent Martin. Two big rushing touchdowns followed - a 35-yarder by Miracle Watto and a 58-yard run by Keefer for the first score of the second quarter. Keefer finished with seven completions for 91 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 95 yards on seven carries. Brandon Walton gave Ephrata 54 rushing yards on 12 carries, including two touchdowns. They carried a 35-0 lead into the second half. Kai Mast, who converted all six of his PAT kicks, added a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Choi was asked to comment on the

mental make-up of the Pequea Valley Braves, who come into games overmatched in terms of roster size and flexibility of personnel. “I wish more people saw how special these kids are,” he said. “They come out knowing they have to play a full 48 minutes on both sides of the ball. Some kids don’t get to come off the field. We even play against some teams with platoons at positions. “When you’re facing a team like Ephrata or Annville-Cleona, you tend to wear down without many people on the sidelines, who are ready to go in,” said Choi. “Our kids are incredible as far as their efforts. You come out for a football team, understanding that there are going to be some challenges. You’re not looking at the scoreboard, the wins and the losses; you look at the efforts they give. They’ve learned a lot of life lessons sticking together and picking each other up on the field.”

The prints are somewhat reminiscent of those tiny candy hearts with the messages that circulate in early to mid-February. The photos line the walls of the gallery at the Emerald Center (The E), each bearing its own words, colors, and expressions. The exhibit is called “The Hardened Heart - Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault,” and it will be on display at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, through Saturday, Dec. 15. Exhibit openings will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. A poster hanging near the exhibit asks “Is your heart represented?” and it is natural for viewers to wander along the wall looking for the heart that bears the color and message they associate with their own. “Life’s

experiences give us each a hardened heart,” said Patricia Leese, widow of David Leese, the artist who created the hearts. “Some (experiences) are negative, but some (hearts) rise above,” added Patricia. “You get knocked down, but you get back up and see life differently.” David was both clever and creative in crafting each of the nearly 40 heart prints in the gallery. “The broken heart is actually two pieces that come together, even part of one of the letters (is split),” pointed out Patricia. Two original plaster of Paris sculptures - “Melancholy Heart” and “Young at Heart” - are part of the exhibit to give viewers a threedimensional understanding of David’s creations. “David designed the lettering for a stencil (depending on the subject) of the heart,” explained Patricia, who noted that the cold heart bears images reminiscent of icicles on its surface, the wounded heart bears a gash, and the “hole in my heart” design has a small, round opening in it. Each heart is painted and coated with varnish. Coupled with another piece titled “Love,” which he completed in 2013, David’s work forms a statement about the ways domestic violence and sexual assault can scar hearts. The “Love” painting, which is 88 by 43 inches, appears to be an ode to the motifs of love, but when one looks closely, the border contains statistics about domestic violence against women, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy, and divorce rates, exposing the truth behind the myth. During the exhibit, community members are invited to visit The E and have a photo taken with posters available near the exhibit. One is of a blue heart that reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from sexual assault,” and the other is purple and reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from domestic violence.” Photos may be shared to social media with the hashtag #nomorehardenedhearts. The posters are for sale, and half of the proceeds from each poster sold will be given to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Acrylic in New York City, among many other locations. Readers who would like to know more about the artist and his work may visit www.david leesestudio.com. More information about The E may be found at https://emeralde.org.

(PCADV). David, who was a graduate of the York Academy of Art, was working on the plaster of Paris decorations that are part of the “Love” painting when he created his first hardened heart. “He had excess plaster, and he was just throwing it in a candy box,” explained Patricia. “When he tore the (box) away, he (noticed) the texture (of the heart). He thought it had character, and he called it the hardened heart.” David served as director of education for the Bradley Academy of Visual Arts and fine art department chair for Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography of York. His work has been displayed at Penn State University campuses and the National Society of Painters in Casein and

For the fifth annual Faith Church Trunk or Treat, organizers have decided to go with a carnival theme for trunks and games. This year’s event will be held at the church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is scheduled to take place both outside and inside the church, with up to 15 cars with decorated trunks located in the parking lot and games and food inside the church. The event will be held rain or shine. The Trunk or Treat is free, and children who attend are encouraged to dress in costume for the festivities. In 2017, about 150 children and their parents attended the event. The trunks of cars in the parking lot will be decorated to resemble carnival games, including ring toss, pick-a-duck, coin toss, milk bottle throw, flying disc, and cornhole. Participants will receive free candy, and they will have opportunities to win tickets for additional prizes. See Faith Church pg 17
