PVHS Prepares To Present “Pieces BY ANN MEAD ASH
licia Trescavage, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) presentation titled “Pieces, would like to see audiences enjoy the show, appreciate the acting and comedic skills of the students, and relax. “I want them to leave thinking that was a lot of fun, she said. “The kids are giving the audience the gift of relaxing and enjoying. “Pieces, which will consist of a selection of monologues, short scenes, and a one-act comedy called “12 Incompetent Jurors, will be presented at PVHS, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Friday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 and 7 p.m. Audience members are required to wear masks as per state and school guidelines. “The whole show is called ‘Pieces’ because basically we are piecing things together, said Trescavage. “There’s nothing that
Three short scenes will be performed, as well. “One of the scenes is called ‘Romeo and Juliet - Sped Up,’ noted Trescavage. “It’s a melodramatic retelling of the story. The students will also perform two scenes from a larger play called “One Stop-Light Town, which Trescavage explained will be published in the next few months. “We will be one of the first schools that does parts of it, she noted. One scene from that show is called “The Big Dance, and it involves two people in a love-hate relationship. The other scene is called “The Drag Race. Auditions for the show were held the week of Sept. 7. Trescavage worked well ahead to face the many challenges of presenting a play while working within COVID-19 restrictions. “The whole approach to how you plan and stage (is a challenge), she noted, adding, “The biggest challenge is myself and the kids being flexible enough to make See PVHS pg 2
Cavod Schedules “Wonder For Christmas BY ANN MEAD ASH
Back in the spring of 2019, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales was thinking about Christmas. “‘The Nutcracker’ is big for the holidays,â€? said Morales. “I love (the show), but ‌ I thought there should be something else for the holidays.â€? When Morales went to sleep one night, she dreamed of a ballet.

has a connection to anything else. The structure of the show and minimal scenery allow for social distancing. In the fall of 2019, the PVHS players tackled the weighty “Radium Girls, based on the true stories of young women who took ill after working in factories where they painted watch dials with paint containing radium. “‘Radium Girls’ was such a serious topic, I promised (the students) I would do a comedy (in 2020), said Trescavage, who chose “12 Incompetent Jurors by Ian McWethy because she so enjoyed directing another work by the author at PVHS several years ago. She added the monologues and scenes to give members of the cast of about 20 “chances to shine individually. Trescavage shared that all the monologues except one were written by students ages 13 to 18. One student is doing a monologue from “Les Miserables.
According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. of the Bible and is accompanied by original orchestrations that underscore key themes throughout the production. The piece revolves around Jesus’ conversation on the Emmaus road, where he explains how all of Scripture points to Himself. With Jesus serving as the main narrator, audiences will witness Bible stories told from the perspective of the resurrected Christ. Piercing Word has been performing Scripture across the country since 2007. The mission of Piercing Word is to “ignite passion for the Word of God in the heart of the church.” The group challenges everyone to memorize the Word of God for themselves and then equips them to do so through memorization workshops and discipleship programs. For more information about the performance at WordUP, readers may call 610-864-5458. More information about Piercing Word is available at www.piercingword.org.

Protect yourself and those around you. This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.

We find ourselves in the middle of another tension-filled election season a at the end of the difficult year that 2020 h has been. That is why we are hosting an Election Eve Prayer and Worship Night, not to endorse a political candidate or party, but to remind us all that no matter the results of the next day’s election, Jesus Christ is still the King of Kings. Join us for an evening of prayer, worship, and a message by Pastor Phil Walck of Mount Airy Church.
Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, cofounded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve greatgrandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was

reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie

undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-today employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. Christiana Lions Collect Supplies For Hurricane Victims In the aftermath of the devastating hurricanes that recently hit Louisiana, members of the Christiania Lions Club immediately leapt into action, collecting much-needed supplies for residents affected by the storms. The Christiana Lions Club and Lion Jim Groff, Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator, have a history of helping victims of natural disasters. In the past, Groff has traveled to help at tornado-devastated Joplin, Mo., and New Jersey towns hit by Hurricane Sandy. “During all of these disasters people want to give and be involved,” said Groff. “You just ask, and people give. It’s been a wonderful experience.” As part of the latest effort, the Christiana Lions Club opened its building on Oct. 4 through 8 to receive donations. Another donation drive was held on Oct. 3 at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap.
“The community is wonderful,” said Groff. “We went to Dutch-Way and we packed five pickup trucks of stuff in one day. We had stuff at people’s houses, in garages and warehouses and brought everything to the Lions building on (Oct. 4) to box everything up.” Working with a Lions Club in Louisiana, the local club was able to put together a list of needed items, which included laundry detergent, bleach, mops, work gloves, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items. All of the donations were sorted and placed in boxes by volunteers. “We used to buy our boxes, but PCA (Packaging Corporation of America) in Lancaster made boxes for us and printed them out with the Lions logo,” noted Groff. The boxes were brought to the Morgantown Lowe’s on Oct. 15 and were then loaded onto a tractortrailer by the Christiana Lions Club, along with Lowe’s employees. The
tractor-trailer then made stops at the Lions Club state office in Harrisburg and in Cranberry Township near Pittsburgh before heading south. The tractor-trailer was “wrapped” with the Lions Club logo and the statement “Pennsylvania Lions Serving Our Communities Since 1923.” “We never had a tractortrailer wrapped with our logo,” Groff pointed out. “It’s like a billboard it’s a moving billboard. It’s a great idea and good way of promoting Lionism.”
The tractor-trailer that transported the goods was provided by A&S Kinard Trucking in York. “After Hurricane Harvey (in 2017), we took four tractor-trailers down there and we found companies willing to donate time and fuel. I knew that would not be the case every time,” Groff explained. “My goal after Hurricane Harvey was to find a trucking company and A&S Kinard Trucking stepped up to the plate.” The supplies, as well as two disaster response units, arrived in

“(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. “I put it all together and brought it to Connie (Dienner, director) at Cavod (Academy of the Arts),” recalled Morales. “Our mission (at Cavod) is to create with purpose, so we wanted to offer (a holiday ballet) that would show that to our

students.” Dienner agreed with Morales, and the result was “Wonder,” an original ballet choreographed and directed by Morales. The show premiered at Cavod in late 2019. This year, “Wonder” will run from Friday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. The Nov. 13 show will be at 7 p.m. The Nov. 14 and 15 shows will play at 2 and 7 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to wear masks, and theater seating will be at 50% capacity to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. “Wonder” is the story of Gracie, played by Lilly Spolum, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights, Twinkle, played by Jada Correll; Flicker, played by Emma Myers; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder,” the children visit the Toy Shoppe, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from
being loved. Auditions, which were open to the community, were held at the end of August. Morales said the cast of 30 will include two adults this year, who will portray Ma and Pa Winters. Ma Winters will be played by Kelly Manana, and Pa Winters will be played by David Spolum. “This year, we are adding a sweet shop, which will be brand new,” reported Morales. “In the sweet shop we have a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5- to 7-year-olds. We have hot chocolate and gumdrops and

Lady Booters Win Two, Improve to 5-4-1 Overall
The Pequea Valley girls played four soccer matches in a span of six days, winning two in convincing fashion. With those two wins, the Braves improved to 5-4-1 and 3-3-0 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. “This week’s schedule was a challenge,” stated head coach Steve Morris. Coming off a 1-0 loss to Lancaster Catholic on Saturday, October 17, in what was the Braves’ first game in nearly two weeks, an unfortunate own goal gave Catholic the slim margin of victory while PV goalie Maddy Weaver played a strong match, making four saves. Following a 4-0 loss to Northern Lebanon on Monday, the Braves played host to Annville-Cleona the following afternoon. On senior night, Pequea’s offense caught fire, sparked by senior Megan Yoder’s hat trick. “She played especially well in the middle of the field,” Morris said. “She made the most of her opportunities.” She scored twice in the first half. Caroline Fisher’s goal in the 26th minute made it 3-1 going into halftime. Yoder notched the hat trick 28 minutes into the second half. Senior Baleigh Henshaw and sophomore Elena Esh each dished out an assist while Weaver’s winning effort included two saves in goal. You want hat tricks? Pequea has hat tricks. Esh recorded one in the 6-0 defeat of Lebanon on Thursday. It was Henshaw’s goal that got things started eight minutes into the game. Avery Fisher made it 2-0 at the 30-minute mark. Caroline Fisher scored 10 minutes into the second half - five minutes prior to Esh making it a hat trick. Esh, Deena Stoltzfus and Shania Stoltzfus each claimed an assist.

Louisiana on Oct. 17. Groff explained that, once emptied, the pods are used as temporary housing for volunteer workers who are helping with relief projects. Groff noted that this year tropical storms and hurricanes, which included Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta, have been particularly devastating. “Delta was 15 miles from the first one,” Groff said. “Those people were rebuilding, and when (Delta) hit, they lost what (progress they had made). They definitely need help and supplies.” The Christiana Lions Club community building/clubhouse is located at 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana. Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Women Invited To “For Such A Time As This” BY ANN MEAD ASH
Emma Mae Jenkins, author, speaker, YouTuber, blogger, podcaster, and Liberty University student majoring in women’s Christian leadership, will speak at the For Such a Time as This Virtual Women’s Conference, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. The livestreamed event will also feature Emily Ann Roberts, a finalist on Blake Shelton’s team on season nine of “The Voice.” The conference will be hosted by This Day Music and Media Management. “I hope women who attend feel their calling and purpose from this event,” said Megan Feveryear, founder and owner of This Day. “2020 has
been known for a lot of things, (but) our goal and purpose is to make 2020 known for something more (because) there is a purpose for each one of us.” Feveryear, who is a senior at Liberty, plans to share Jenkins’ message of encouragement and purity in a conference with a theme based on the book of Esther. “A lot of her messages are about how we as women of faith and young ladies in Christ can just shine and be true to our beliefs,” said Feveryear. Jenkins has said that her vision is to lead her generation into authentic relationship with Christ to experience joy, peace, hope, and confidence. Known for her passion in helping others to grow their faith,
Jenkins has a focus on teens and young women. Roberts, who was a high school student when she appeared on “The Voice,” now lives in Nashville. She took part in the 2017 tour called “The Gospel Through Girls & Guitars,” releasing her first album, “Bigger Than Me,” that same year. In 2018, she signed with Starstruck Records. She has released several singles. “(Roberts) performed with Abraham Productions on the Beyond Amazing tour,” reported Feveryear. “She spreads a message through Christian country music … about how she can be on television and still exemplify Christ.” Although the conference is
geared to women in their teens through 30s, Feveryear noted that there will be topics that appeal to older women as well. Those who purchase tickets will be able to view the conference for 24 hours following the event. More information about the conference may be found by searching for “This Day” on Facebook, selecting Events, and clicking on “For Such A Time As This Virtual Women’s Conference.” Readers who wish to purchase tickets may visit w w w. i t i c k e t s . c o m / e v e n t s /449219 or call iTickets at 800-965-9324. A tiered ticket structure, featuring VIP admission, single online admission, family tickets, and watch party tickets, is available.
