Murder … mystery … laughter PVHS to stage “Play On” BY ANN MEAD ASH
ffering a bit of fun to students of Pequea Valley School District schools was at the forefront of director Danielle Peifer’s thoughts when she chose “Play On” for her first Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) production. “I love that it’s comedy,” said Peifer. “High school kids have such fun with that.” But it is not just her cast members that Peifer has in mind. “I think (adult) audience (members) and younger kids can follow and laugh at some of the silliness (too),” she added. “Play On” will be presented at PVHS, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. “Play On” is a play within a play detailing a community theater’s attempt to produce a show written by novice playwright Phyllis Montague, played by Annika Hofstetter, called “Murder Most Foul.” The new murder

mystery coincidentally has the same title as an Agatha Christie novel. Director of the play within a play Geraldine “Gerry” Dunbar, played Madeline Heverin, jumps at the
idea of putting on the play because the playwright agrees to allow the performance at no charge. Unfortunately, the plot is lacking an actual murder, and the
playwright keeps showing up at rehearsal to make changes with only a few days before opening night. The small cast also includes Grace Melson as stage manager
Aggie Manville, Sean Ammon as Henry Benish and Lord Dudley, Naomi Brumbach as Polly Benish and Lady Margaret, Liv Hofstetter as Marla “Smitty” Smith and Doris the maid, Nathan Sensenig as Saul Watson and Dr. Rex Forbes, Robert Forsythe as Billy Carewe and Stephen Sellers, Tori Beiler as Violet Imbry and Diana Lassiter, Landyn Waters as technical director Lou Peary, and Gabrielle Troupe and Spencer Groff as Lou’s stage crew. Peifer said that the show is packed with circumstances that lend themselves to comedy. “Four days before the (opening night), they have never done the third act because (the playwright) keeps changing it,” Peifer noted, adding that the writer also accidentally erases information stored in the sound board. “(When) they run the show, it’s a comical series of events.” Peifer relayed that the student actors are “cracking themselves up”

The swing dance will take place in the Rolling Stock Hall of the museum, and it will include live entertainment from Moonlighters Big Band. The Lititz-based musical group performs songs of popular big band artists such as Glenn Miller and Les Brown. Moonlighters Big Band will play music for attendees to boogie to for the duration of the evening, save for a few breaks. During each break, members of the Victrola Dance Hall will demonstrate moves that first-time swing dancers can try out when the music starts back up. Light refreshments will be available during the event. On the same weekend as the swing dance, the museum will host its Trains and

Several exhibitors will set up displays to discuss American military conflicts that were heavily impacted by railroads, from the American Civil War to the early days of the Gulf War. Many exhibitors will bring military vehicles to display at the museum, and the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard will present a ceremony to salute veterans at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Margaret’s convictions about the essentials may be traced to her mother, Zelma Martha Zander, who attended Sunday school at Bellevue as a child, even though her parents did not attend church. Eventually, Zelma’s husband and then her children attended. Her granddaughter Susan Houck attends, as does Susan’s son, Ethan, who compared the church to a second home, calling it “familiar and safe.” Susan now brings her grandson to church sometimes. “My grandmother was very quiet, but she had faith, and knew what she wanted,” said Susan. On Sunday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m., Bellevue, 810 Newport Ave., Gap, will hold a special service including a short presentation called “Celebrating What God Has Done.” Missionary and professor of theology Bruce Anderson will speak about his work in the mission field at the 9 a.m. Sunday school. He will speak at the 10 a.m. service, and special instrumental music will be provided by a group of woodwind players. Associate pastor Brad Moger will share thoughts reflecting on the 40 years Bud Davies was pastor of the church. The service will be followed at 11:30 a.m. by a reception with refreshments. According to church historian Dale Groff, the roots of the church are found in Scotland in the 1300s when families named Maxwell, Kennedy, and Stewart united through marriage. By the late 1400s and early 1500s, a number of the clan had become Presbyterian ministers, and within about 200 years, members departed for Philadelphia, where they founded churches north of the city and near Stewartsville, N.J. In the early 1800s, Jane Maxwell started a Sunday school in Gap that attracted up to 300 participants. A house of public worship called Bellevue was built on an acre of land owned by Elizabeth Kennedy in 1823, with eight men working to dig the foundation, hauling stone and bringing boards, rafters, shingles, and more to construct the building, which was completed on Dec. 27 of that year. According to John Perella, additions were made to the north and the east sides of the building, with the section added in 1863 becoming an education wing and the eastern addition including a library and a large fellowship

The National Museum of African American History and Culture recognizes Madeline Anderson as the first African American woman to direct a televised documentary film. Anderson and her work are credited with paving the way for black women in the television industry, but many Lancaster residents may be unaware that she also grew up in Lancaster city. The renowned filmmaker is an alumna of McCaskey High School and Millersville University, and she went on to achieve national acclaim in her career. On Sept. 23, LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, held a film screening of two documentaries directed by Anderson. The first film, titled “Integration Report One,” was released in 1960, and it depicts the battle for racial equality in various cities across the United States. The second film, titled “I Am Somebody,” was released in 1970 to capture the troubles of black women who fought for better working conditions at a hospital in Charleston, S.C. Shianne Hargrove, an infor-
mation specialist at LancasterHistory, had the idea to feature Anderson’s work while she was working on a project for the organization’s Collections Up Close program in February. Collections Up Close is a series that offers tours to focus on specific items from LancasterHistory’s archive; during the tours, staff members and visiting scholars provide additional information on the historical relevance of each item. The goal of Hargrove’s project was to highlight black individuals from Lancaster who became accomplished artists, directors or actors. Hargrove was already familiar with Anderson’s work, but she rediscovered it in her research and embarked on a quest to find copies of Anderson’s documentaries. After six months of hard work and research, Hargrove located copies of the films with the help of Mabel Rosenheck, LancasterHistory’s director of education and exhibition planning. “I was a fan of (Anderson’s) work already - I had seen her documentaries in college - but realizing that she was a local black female filmmaker made me feel closer to her,” Hargrove said. “I also graduated

from McCaskey and Millersville. It became more real to me since she existed here in Lancaster, and she made these amazing documentaries that will be housed in the Smithsonian Institution.” Anderson now resides in Brooklyn, but she virtually attended the film screening for a question-and-answer session where she explained her motivation to become a filmmaker. “When I started going to the movies when I was 7 years old, I saw the stereotype of Hollywood’s notion of black people. We were always stupid. We were always shuffling along,” Anderson told the
audience. “It was my childish idea that I would become a filmmaker and show black people as they really were to mitigate the terrible image of us that Hollywood had on the screen.” Hargrove hopes to digitize some of Anderson’s work for LancasterHistory’s collections in addition to materials that document her early life in Lancaster. Beginning on Friday, Nov. 17, Anderson will be featured among other artists in the exhibit “Black Lancastrians in the Arts: A Lasting Legacy” at LancasterHistory. Community members invited to join in litter cleanups Groups and individuals are cleaning up shared public spaces through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Pick Up Pennsylvania program, supporting the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The International Coastal Cleanup is an initiative to keep trash from reaching waterways and oceans.
Through Thursday, Nov. 30, while supplies last, volunteers will be provided free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests when they register a cleanup with Pick Up Pennsylvania. Both waterway and landbased cleanups are eligible for the program since a significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land.
Wind and rain wash litter into storm drains or directly into creeks and rivers that eventually flow to the ocean, where it impacts marine life, human health, and coastal economies. Events must be registered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to receive the supplies, which will be provided by the
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT and the Ocean Conservancy. Members of the public may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org to join an existing cleanup event through the Calendar of Events or to register their own cleanup by clicking on Programs and then Pick Up PA.

PVHS from pg 1 during rehearsals, but that the play is not without challenges. She noted it is confusing for students to develop two characters at the same time and that certain props have been assigned to the actors to help them stay in character. In addition, because the actors are rehearsing a play, some lines are repeated regularly. “Many lines are the same but trigger different results,” Peifer explained. “(An actor) might say the same line five times within a scene, but each time it triggers (a different response).” Working with a small cast has provided Peifer with more
latitude to guide students in their performances. “It allows for more bonding and chemistry - a lot more collaborative work,” she said. “I love working on acting skills and coaching, and a smaller cast gives me the freedom to do that.” She commented that the playwithin-a-play format pays homage to community theater troupes. “It’s a fun recognition of all that goes into putting on a show - the amount of time and energy and what can happen when things change at the last minute,” she said. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may do so at the door prior to performances.

were contentious political times between Democrats and Republicans. The 10th amendment to the Constitution had been passed in 1919, banning the sale of alcoholic beverages across the nation. By 1922, the proliferation of underground distilleries and “bathtub gin” accelerated. Due to the Great Depression occurring during the 1920s, some Salisbury Township families put food on the table by selling alcohol made with makeshift backwoods distilleries. Musser, with several other prominent local men, formed the Lancaster County Coalition Party of Democrats and Independent Republicans. Musser was to be their candidate for mayor in 1921, on the ticket with McSparran. While McSparran lost his race, Musser not only won the mayoral race but served two four-year terms. In that time, he successfully initiated the commission style of government in Lancaster city, modernized police department facilities, improved sewer and water infrastructure, brought city streets up to modern quality and equalized city tax assessment laws. He also worked hard to get the cobweb of phone and electric lines along the city streets placed underground to improve the appearance. Musser was also a member of several men’s clubs of the era: Moose, Elk, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. This

Submitted by Leona Baker of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township Several years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Robinson donated a political banner to the Historical Society of Salisbury Township featuring candidates John Aldus McSparran and Frank Custer Musser. Made of silk and embroidered in gold thread with gold spiral fringe and wording on both sides, it was made for the election campaign of 1922 - tangible evidence of political activity in Salisbury Township at that time. McSparran was a candidate for governor in 1922. His family members were dairy farmers in Lancaster County for many generations. As a secretary, treasurer and eventually master of the Pennsylvania State Grange, he became interested in politics. He entered the 1922 gubernatorial race but lost to Gifford Pinchot, although he received nearly 40% of the votes. Such was McSparran’s influence and ability to cross political lines that when Pinchot won the gubernatorial election again in 1931, he appointed McSparran as secretary of agriculture. Musser was mayor of Lancaster city from 1922 to 1930. The son of a New Holland cattle dealer, he left school at age 16 to help with the business, eventually becoming president of the Lancaster County Union Livestock Stock Exchange. Rockhounds and fossil-heads invited to attend annual festival BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) will hold its annual Fall Harvest Rock and Mineral Festival on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. From 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors will have an opportunity to view a diverse collection of fossils, minerals and crystals, and many of the specimens will be available to purchase. Admission may be purchased at the door for a set price, and only cash will be accepted. Students between kindergarten and 12th grade will receive a discounted admission price, and children under the age of 5 may attend for free. A variety of educational activities will be offered to youngsters who attend the festival, and each activity will relate to geology or paleontology. new. Last year, LCFMC introduced an activity that simulates spelunking; it was so popular that it will return for this year’s festival. Children and their parents, who are equipped with a flashlight, will proceed into a dark room through a makeshift mine entrance. Various minerals and crystals will be scattered throughout the room for the explorers to find and take home. During the festival, the Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ Ladies’ Guild will sell food such as chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs and baked goods. Those attending the festival are invited to bring rocks, minerals and fossils to receive a free specimen analysis from
ex pert geologists and paleontologists. This will be the 10th year that LCFMC has hosted the Fall Harvest Rock and Mineral Festival. The club was founded by Catherine Haefner and her husband, Chris; Catherine serves as the organization’s treasurer, and Chris acts as its president. “ We didn’t have a rock and mineral club in Lancaster before this. We wanted to serve people in the community with a passion for earth and mineral sciences and provide a place to collaborate with fellow rockhounds,” Catherine said. Catherine added she has had an interest in geology since she was a child. She credited the origin of her hobby to her father, who
shared his fascination with minerals and rock tumbling. Chris comes from a long line of rockhounds; he has five family members who are geology professors. LCFMC members meet at Trinity Reformed Church on the last Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. The club also organizes annual rock and mineral shows, where participants can have specimens analyzed or buy new pieces for their collection. The shows are often attended by more than 900 geology enthusiasts. Those interested in joining LCFMC are invited to attend one of its meetings or contact Catherine at 717-917-5442.

Program to examine feathers The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Retired science educator and environmentalist Kathy Gingerich will present “Birds of a Feather - Feather ID.” She will share how a feather’s characteristics reveal its purpose, where it is located on the bird’s body and how the feather’s color is produced. Additional topics will be how feathers grow, how long they last, how and when they are replaced, and how they are kept in their streamlined position.
Gingerich taught Earth science and astronomy for 28 years, mostly at Red Land High School in York County. She ran the West Shore School District’s Environmental Center at Gifford Pinchot State Park for 10 years. She was recognized for having the top environmental program in Pennsylvania. Now in her retirement, Gingerich continues to volunteer, leading nature walks for school groups at Pinchot State Park. As a member of the Garden Club of York, she is the chair of the Birds, Bees and Butterflies Committee. She is a past recipient of
Promise Players slate fall play The Promise Players theater group will offer a performance of “The One You Need” for its fall production at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 3 through 5, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 9 through 12. The Thursday and Friday shows will be held at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. show, and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. show to close the weekend. “The One You Need” is a play written by Janette FrankfordBook, who has been a member of the Promise Players for more than 13 years. The production tells the story of Jan, a young woman who is taking care of her father after he is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As the father approaches the end of his life, his primary concern is making sure his daughter has a relationship with God. Jan opposes the faith and only wishes to have her father in her life. The play explores the subject of grief as it follows the
intense dynamic between the two main characters, but it also finds room for comedic scenarios as Jan struggles to be a graceful caregiver. Frankford-Book began writing “The One You Need” more than 10 years ago, and the fall production will be the play’s first time being performed for audiences. The story is inspired by Frankford-Book’s real-life experiences; nearly two decades ago, she acted as her ill father’s caregiver until his passing. The play incorporates characters such as Jan’s brothers, a local doctor and a funeral director, who are inspired by FrankfordBook’s own brothers and the individuals who helped her navigate her father’s death. Frankford-Book will play the leading role of Jan, and she is co-directing the production with Wayne Rhinier. “Everyone can relate to this play. Everyone has suffered grief in some way,” FrankfordBook said. “It’s the story of a father wanting only the best for See Promise Players pg 16
