When Alicia Trescavage, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall play, and assistant director Mindy Lapp were searching for a show for autumn, they found one that made them laugh. “We loved the humor,” recalled Trescavage, who noted that she also chose “Peter
and the Starcatcher” because of the number of characters and the opportunities the show offered student actors, specifically being able to cast females in male roles.
“Peter and the Starcatcher” will be presented at PVHS, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Thursday, Nov. 10, and Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 12, at
2 and 7 p.m.
The play, which is adapted from the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, is a prequel to the story “Peter Pan.” The story follows an orphan boy with no name, played by Nick Ammon, and Molly, played by Annika Hofstetter, who is a starcatcher-in-training, as they try to protect magical “starstuff” from
falling into the hands of Black Stache, a pirate played by Jared Knepp, and his accomplice Smee, played by Peter Brumbach. In the process, they survive a shipwreck, meet murderous natives who speak a culinary language, and meet up with a giant ticking crocodile. The show, which delves into the origins of Peter Pan and Captain Hook, is recommended for people of all ages.
While cast members were familiar with “Peter Pan,” not all were acquainted with “Peter and the Starcatcher.” “They’re having such a good time (rehearsing), and they’re really embracing their characters and getting into the humor of it,” reported Trescavage, who noted that some references, such as to the Oscar acceptance speech of actress Sally Field and to the film “Dead Poets Society,” required explanation. Educating the cast has been enjoyable for all involved, according to Trescavage, who is pleased with the way students are assimilating into their roles. “Black Stache, who is pre-Captain Hook, is such a rich character,” she said, noting that Brumbach as Smee and Knepp as Stache are playing off each other well in rehearsals. “Their buddy-like chemistry is fantastic,” she said.
One challenge of staging the show is the openness of the set. “It’s a story theater, so you’re not working with exact sets,” Trescavage noted, pointing out that in the 2021 fall play, “Clue,” cast members worked within the context of specific rooms with doors. “(The set for ‘Starcatcher’) is very fluid,” she said, noting that finding different ways to create water has been interesting.
Lessons the characters learn include the consequences of decisions. “Peter ends up with the starstuff that he wanted,” she said, adding that Molly reaches her goals as well, but Stache becomes a victim of his own bad behavior.

Jason Lichty of Leola is an artist with a broad resume. He paints, draws, sculpts, and more, but his love is stained glass, and while he wished to make a career in that area, he did not think it was likely to happen. “I thought for sure the stained glass end of things was just going to be a hobby,” said Lichty. “I was convinced it was just going to be an extension of my other artwork.”
Not only has Lichty developed a stained glass repair business that has him working “around the clock” and booked up to six months in advance, but in September, collector Bill Hylen, owner of Coming Up Roses Antiques in Adamstown, brought Lichty a Tiffany window to repair. “It’s just a thrill of a lifetime,” said Lichty, who kept the job a secret until the repair was complete. “There’s a really good chance that for the rest of my career, I’ll never come across another Tiffany window.”

Mark Pearl’s childhood home in the greater northeast region of Philadelphia is not so many miles from Leola, but it is a different world culturally.
Pearl’s life now is spiritually distant from his upbringing as well. Pearl’s penchant for playing Messianic music represents his journey from an 11year-old who did not want to attend Hebrew school and lobbied for a Christmas tree rather than a menorah.
By the time Pearl was 17, one of his mother’s sisters, who had married a Christian, had convinced his parents to attend a Baptist church. Pearl was not any more enamored of church than he had been with Hebrew school. “I’m looking at Big Ben on the wall (because) I can’t wait for 12 o’clock so I can fly out of there,” recalled Pearl.
“But God’s Word never goes void,” stated Pearl. “I would say I was born again in 1975.” From 1977 to 1979, Pearl did a stint in the Air Force. By the mid-1980s, Pearl was living with Christian friends in Norristown who introduced him to the music of artist Keith Green. “(Green’s music) just blew me out of the chair,” said Pearl, who wanted to meet the singer until his friends informed him Green had been killed in a plane crash in 1982.
When Pearl’s parents moved to Lancaster County, he joined them. In 2015, he began attending the Seed of Abraham - a Messianic congregation of Jewish and Gentile believers, then meeting in Lititz. Pearl became familiar with the music of Paul Wilbur, known for his Messianic worship songs, and Lamb, a Mes-
sianic group comprising Joel Chernoff and the late Rick Coghill. Pearl began covering their tunes in his presentations. “I consider myself a Messianic Jew,” said Pearl, who wears a yarmulke and prayer shawl during his musical performances. “A lot of people in this area don’t know the Jewish side of the Gospel, and that’s what I present to them,” he said. “When you hear Messianic music, you feel you’re in Israel.”
In addition to his solo presentations, Pearl has performed with the recently disbanded Lancaster Christian band known as Saved Renegade.
Readers who would like to learn more about Pearl’s music may contact him at 717-645-3628 or email mmpearl@comcast.net.

Submitted by Leona Baker, president, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township/Written by Brett Snyder, member Reuben Chambers, who lived from 1801 to 1859, was a Salisbury Township “character” in every sense of the word. He had strong opinions on many things, often reflected in print in his newspaper, The Bethania Palladium. Anecdotes about him
abound - appearing in local newspapers during his lifetime and for years afterward. In addition, The Journal of the Lancaster County Historical Society published biographical articles in 1896 and in 1932, the latter by Quarryville’s George W. Hensel Jr., founder of the famous Slumbering Groundhog Lodge.
Reuben believed that labor was the source of all wealth, so he proposed replacing all currency and coins with his own notes, which he printed himself. The denominations of these “notes” ran from six minutes to 20 hours. When forced to determine an exchange rate, he equated one hour as equal to five

There have been a number of games in the 2022 football season where Pequea Valley head coach Mike Choi has pointed out, “The score wasn’t indicative of the quality of game we played.
“The game could have been closer,” he said, referring to the loss at Lancaster Catholic on Friday, October 21. The Crusaders defeated the Braves 33-0 in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Five football game. With the win, the Crusaders claimed the Section Five title.
“Congratulations to them for winning the section,” Choi
said of the Crusaders, who improved to 9-0 (6-0 league) on the year. “Give them credit for playing good defense and the athletic kids they have on their team.”
The Braves (1-8, 1-5 league) got closer than the score indicated, as Choi explained.
“We had five drives where we got inside their 25-yard line,” said the Pequea coach. “Normally, they were long drives. It was encouraging to see our offense move the ball against a pretty good team.
“We just weren’t able to put points on the board,” he added. “We fumbled on the nine-yard line; we threw an
interception; there was a missed field goal; two times we turned the ball over on downs.”
Pequea Valley’s opportunity that was thwarted by an interception that resulted in Lancaster Catholic scoring on a big 51-yard pass from Will Cranford to R.J. Gonzalez late in the second quarter. Gonzalez caught five passes for 120 yards as Cranford completed 13-of-21 attempts for 190 yards.
“With about two minutes left in the first half, it was 120,” Choi said. “We got to their 14-yard line and threw an interception. Instead of it being 12-7, it was 19-0 at halftime.”
The Braves’ offense was again led by Dontae Petersheim.
Quarterback Peyton Temple completed eight passes for 109 yards. Petersheim caught six of those passes for 55 yards. He also carried the ball 13 times for 76 yards.
“Petersheim is gaining more and more experience and he’s becoming more comfortable running the ball,” Choi said. “He is showing how much talent he has.”
Darrell Beiler had seven carries for 44 yards. Orlando Stoltzfus had a 30-yard reception while Temple racked up 21 rushing yards on four carries.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” said Choi.

PV’s Final Result Not Indicative
Lichty added that his friends who work in stained-glass both locally and around the country are in awe of his opportunity. “They’re just blown away,” said Lichty.
The window came from the All Angels’ Church in New York City and was designed by John B. Snook. The church was founded in 1890, and the Tiffany windows were a commission. The windows were still part of the church when it was sold to be demolished in 1979. The windows were auctioned to Gene Holloway, who had them installed in a Tampa, Fla., restaurant. In 2021, Hylen recognized the Cherub Roundels featured in the windows and purchased them.
Lichty explained that in stained glass, certification of authenticity is called provenance, which he noted could range from a bill of sale to a photograph of a relative with the piece of art 100 years ago. “Fortunately, the All Angels’ Church has extensive records on this Tiffany commission, so these are wellknown windows,” said Lichty.
In his office, Lichty keeps a few
examples of windows prior to repair.
“You can see (this window is) filthy, and it’s buckled,” he said, explaining that the warping is caused by expansion and contraction from enduring changes in weather. He noted that the putty that seals the window falls out over time, and the window starts to come apart under its own weight. “Most people who own stained glass, even major churches, don’t do the scheduled renovations that are necessary,” he pointed out, adding that if repairs are done every so many years, the windows will retain their beauty and integrity for far longer.
According to Lichty, stained glass can often be authentically restored because glass is available from windows that are beyond repair or new glass can be purchased. “The miracle of stained glass is that there’s two companies making the same glass since the 1880s,” he said, noting that Paul Wissmach Glass Company in West Virginia and have both continued to make the glass they made for Tiffany and for La
Farge, the other well-known American stained-glass creator.
For Lichty, a Conestoga Valley High School graduate, working on the Tiffany means he has reached goals and moved beyond. “It was my dream to open up some sort of stained glass repair shop in my hometown,” he said.
It appears that repairing a Tiffany has been icing on that cake.

Truck Convoy Event Raises Funds
Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley held a celebratory event at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium to celebrate the success of the 2022 Mother’s Day Truck Convoy.
The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy fundraising campaign and event raised $543,875. The funds raised will help grant wishes for children in the Susquehanna Valley who are fighting critical illnesses.
The Mother’s Day Truck Convoy initiative comprises a nine-month fundraising campaign; a 26-mile truck convoy through Manheim, Mount Joy, and several nearby communities; and a family carni-
val. The truck convoy event and carnival take place on Mother’s Day each year at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, and they raise funds to support nearly 75% of wishes granted in the Susquehanna Valley.
A large part of fundraising efforts for the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy comes from truck drivers who raise money for Make-A-Wish for months leading up to the truck convoy event. Each year, the drivers who raise the most money earn a spot in the top 30 and the opportunity to lead the truck convoy the following year. Collectively, the efforts of the top 30 drivers raised over $300,000 for Make-A-Wish.
The top fundraiser and driver this year was Michael Kindt. He raised $50,025 and will have the privilege of leading the convoy pulling the wish angel trailer honoring Make-A-Wish kids who have died.
The 2023 Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy and Carnival will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. Drivers and fundraising teams are encouraged to register and raise funds for MakeA-Wish by visiting www.wish convoy.org. For information on Truck Convoy partnership opportunities, contact Lori Dietrich at 717-283-4868 or ldietrich@philadesv.wish.org.

cents. As explained on one of the notes: “The Bearer is entitled to receive, on demand Ten Hours labor of the Bethania Manual Labor and Manufacturing Community, or an equivalent in Goods, the product of the Community at the Magazine.”
Although he labored hard to have this system adopted and printed notes for over 20 years (examples are extant from 1837 until his death in 1859), they were probably seldom, if ever, used. Just a few of these are known to have survived.
The press upon which The Bethania Palladium was printed was designed and made by Reuben himself. After his death, the press was reportedly purchased by Samuel Ernst of Millwood, Salisbury Township, who used it to print the monthly German-language religious newspaper Der Waffenlose Waechter (The Weaponless Watchman), and the monthly The Acorn and Germ.

Reuben was a believer of the Thomsonian System of Practice of Medicine, founded by Samuel Thompson, a self-taught American herbalist and botanist. Reuben practiced it on himself and “anybody else who would permit him,” publishing a book on the subject in 1842. He purchased herbs and other vegetable matter from small boys in the village, paying them with his paper notes, and he proceeded to manufacture his own concoctions, stocking them in his shop. One of his most famous remedies was No. 6 for toothaches, which by all accounts was stronger than red pepper or cayenne.
In 1871, Ernst hired a “printer’s devil,” a 14-year-old apprentice by the name of Milton S. Hersheythe boy’s first job. However, Milton did not enjoy this occupation and took steps to get himself fired. One story had him throwing his hat into the rollers of the working press; another was the dropping of a full tray of type. Whichever the method, the required result was attained and Milton was fired for his ineptitude.
As for the press, it was reportedly used by Samuel Thompson in his publishing enterprises first in Gap, then in Lancaster, and after 1884, in Kansas, where he ended his days. After his death, it was, apparently, scrapped as junk.
