Past Servant Stage First Look Extravaganzas have attracted up to 1,000 people. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s event will be held virtually, but Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer is See Servant Stage pg 4 thinking positively about the impact of the reveal that will introduce the organization’s 2021 season. “The good thing about holding it online is that we are expecting more than 10,000 people (to view it),” said Bauer. “We have been doing virtual concerts all summer, and we have gotten really good response to that,” he added, noting that the shows have averaged Servant Stage will hold a virtual First Look 10,000 views per Extravaganza, featuring scenes from upcoming shows, on Nov. 20 in conjunction with the concert. PVHS Prepares To Present “Pieces” Making An
licia Trescavage, director of the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) presentation titled “Pieces,” would like to see audiences enjoy the show, appreciate the acting and comedic skills of the students, and relax. “I want them to leave thinking that was a lot of fun,” she said. “The kids are giving the audience the gift of relaxing and enjoying.” “Pieces,” which will consist of a selection of monologues, short scenes, and a one-act comedy called “12 Incompetent Jurors,” will be presented at PVHS, 4033 E. and on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 and 7 p.m. Audience members are required to wear masks as per state and school guidelines. “The whole show is called ‘Pieces’ because basically we are piecing things together,” said Trescavage. “There’s nothing that has a connection to anything else.” The structure of the show and minimal scenery allow for social distancing. In the fall of 2019, the PVHS players tackled the weighty “Radium Girls,” based on the true stories of young women who took ill after working in factories where they painted watch dials with paint containing radium. “‘Radium Girls’ was such a serious topic, I promised (the
students) I would do a comedy (in 2020),” said Trescavage, who chose “12 Incompetent Jurors” by Ian McWethy because she so enjoyed directing another work by the author at PVHS several years ago. She added the monologues and scenes to give members of the cast of about 20 “chances to shine individually.” Trescavage shared that all the monologues except one were written by students ages 13 to 18. One student is doing a monologue from “Les Miserables.” Three short scenes will be performed, as well. “One of the scenes is called ‘Romeo and Juliet - Sped Up,’” noted Trescavage. “It’s a melodramatic retelling of the story.” The

need and provides quality programming on mental health issues. “It’s important to understand that Samaritan does more than just counseling,” said Schedler, who noted that the organization provides consulting services, as well as TeenHope, a mental health screening program that assesses depression and suicide risk of students in Lancaster County middle and high schools. When applying, Schedler felt the multifaceted center might be a good fit for him. “Something that attracted me to the organization is that they were having impact in multiple ways,” he said. “We want to continue to look for ways to creatively impact the community positively. We’re excited that we can be involved in these different areas of community life.” More information about the services the Samaritan Center offers may be found at http://scclanc.org.
Each Tuesday evening, more than 100 children and youths from the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) spread out to fill the parking lots of Blossom Hill Mennonite Church and Neffsville Mennonite Church with song. Despite the pandemic, these singers seek to carry on the organization’s mission of glorifying God through excellent choral music. MCCL’s staff and board reimagined the fall choral season in light of COVID-19. Committed to excellent and safe choral training, they rewrote curricula, decreased choir sizes, moved rehearsals outside, added music staff, condensed the season, and designed singing masks. A grandparent of one singer volunteered to sew masks and was able to produce more than 100 masks in 100 hours. Readers may view a video of the choirs rehearsing at http://bit.ly/MCCLrehearsal Fall20. Singers are preparing to
share music with their families in an outdoor concert to be held on the turf field of Lancaster Mennonite School on Sunday, Nov. 15. Singers will perform choral selections featuring African drumming, body percussion, and sign language to prerecorded audio tracks. The community will be able to view the performance following the concert at www.mennonite childrenschoir.org. MCCL, begun in 1998, is a program of Lancaster Mennonite School. It provides choral training to singers from approximately 40 congregations, 30 schools, and 10 religious denominations. During a typical season, the choir presents two local concert series, tours nationally or internationally, and participates in local service projects.

Thaddeus Stevens College Receives Award Eight community college career and technical education programs have been named winners of the Excellence and Equity in Community College STEM Award, an initiative led by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program and funded by the Siemens Foundation. Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology was honored for its electrical technology program. These winning programs, which will receive $50,000 each, deliver associate degrees and other credentials in advanced manufacturing, energy, health care, and information technology. A selection committee of field experts selected the winners for not only providing outstanding career preparation but also for intentionally reaching out to and supporting diverse
populations that typically are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, including students of color, low-income students, and females. As part of the award, the winning programs, in partnership with the Aspen Institute, have selected 44 outstanding students as Siemens Technical Scholars. They will each receive a scholarship of $3,500 to $10,000 to continue their education or pay student loan debt. These diverse scholars will share their stories to demonstrate the economic and personal opportunities available through STEM careers. The winning programs’ innovative strategies are profiled at https://high ered.aspeninstitute.org/siem ens-aspen-stem/.

Schedler, who lives in Hershey with his family, is no stranger to Lancaster County. He noted that in his work with the Naaman Center, he often drove to that center’s various locations. A Central Pennsylvania native, he attended Penn State University for his bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned his Master of Social Work at Temple University. Schedler had heard about the reputation of the Samaritan Center and its positive effect on the community before considering joining the team. “The impact Samaritan has in this region is significant,” he said. “I was aware of the good work they have been doing for many years.” The Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, began in 1987 with a mission to foster hope and healing through professional counseling, consultation, and education. The presentation will feature both live aspects and prerecorded segments. “During the few weeks leading up (to the show), we will prerecord a few (performances) with smaller groups,” explained Bauer. “We will have more than 100 performers on that evening, but for safety reasons not all 100 performers will be there in person.” Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Bauer sees a mix of virtual performances and live shows. “We are hoping to ease back into live shows,” he said, noting that during the first three months of 2021, shows will be virtual. “As we get into the spring, we have planned smaller productions to ease back in and to socially distance the cast,” he said. Bauer added that the organization has scheduled shows in a number of large parks next summer in hopes that live outdoor performances may be held at that time.

Remembering Pauline H. Engle, Co-Founder Of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.
When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been
Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

Back in the spring of 2019, Cavod ballet director Stephanie Morales was thinking about Christmas. “‘The Nutcracker’ is big for the holidays,” said Morales. “I love (the show), but … I thought there should be something else for the holidays.” When Morales went to sleep one night, she dreamed of a ballet. “(In the dream) were the names of the characters, their journey, and what it would be about,” said Morales, who woke up in the morning and wrote down everything she could remember. “I put it all together and brought it to Connie (Dienner, director) at Cavod (Academy of the Arts),” recalled Morales. “Our mission (at Cavod) is to create with purpose, so we wanted to offer (a holiday ballet) that would show that to our students.” Dienner agreed with Morales, and the result was “Wonder,” an original ballet choreographed and directed by Morales. The show premiered at Cavod in late 2019.
This year, “Wonder” will run from Friday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 15, at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. The Nov. 13 show will be at 7 p.m. The Nov. 14 and 15 shows will play at 2 and 7 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to wear masks, and theater seating will be at 50% capacity to comply with COVID-19 restrictions. “Wonder” is the story of Gracie, played by Lilly Spolum, and Nick, played by Lincoln Everett, two orphaned children who are searching for the wonder of the holiday season. They are aided in their quest by three Christmas Lights, Twinkle, played by Jada Correll; Flicker, played by Emma Myers; and Pixie, played by Audrey Pavlica. As they search for the “wonder,” the children visit the Toy Shoppe, the Christmas Tree Village, and a cathedral. Through their adventure, they learn that the wonder of the holiday season comes from love and from being loved. Auditions, which were open to the community, were held

WITF has expanded its broadcast television programming every weekday to include more opportunities for students in all grade levels. WITF TV will broadcast educational programming for prekindergarten through elementary school students from 6 a.m. to noon, for middle school stu-

connect with their curriculum, WITF offers thousands of videos and activities ready for their lesson plans. WITF has a series of recorded webinars to share best practices on how to integrate PBS resources into the classroom and remote learning experience. In partnership with its fellow Pennsylvania PBS stations, WITF’s newest and largest project to reach students without access to the internet is the partnership with PDE to establish a statewide datacasting initiative. While broadcasting refers to sending programming “over the air across a geographic region that can be picked up by an antenna and played on a television, datacasting refers to using those same signals to transmit data to be used on a computer. WITF will coordinate with educators to create data instructional units that are transmitted over television air waves and received by a student’s home computer, without the need to connect to the internet. By supplying an inexpensive receiver, families will be able to download lesson plans, videos, slideshows, worksheets, webpages, and more. These instructional materials would then be available on-demand for the student, on the learning schedule that is right for them. With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in
Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa.

Fisher, Lazar Lead Braves Past NL Led by Nate Fisher and Tony Lazar, the Pequea Valley football team claimed its first victory of the season. In a season that opened with a close 27-23 non-league loss at Pottsville Nativity BVM and that included two more contests in which the Braves were in it until a momentum swing in favor of their opponents, it all came together on Friday night, Oct. 23, at Northern Lebanon (NL). The Braves shut out the Vikings 14-0 with Lazar and Fisher each scoring a rushing touchdown. The victory improved PV’s record to 1-4 (1-3 league) while the Vikings fell to 0-6 (0-5). The win ended a 27-game losing streak that dated back to 2017. Great preparation helped, according to head coach Jeff Werner. The coach pointed out that a COVID-19 related shutdown of the school resulted in very little preparation for the previous game - a loss to Octorara. “We only had one real practice before the Octorara game,” Werner said. “This past week we had a full week. I worked them hard. From a conditioning standpoint, we worked on what it takes to play four quarters. “The kids played four good quarters,” Werner commented. “I could tell when I boarded the bus - there was a different feeling.” On the night, Fisher finished with 119 yards on 20 carries while also completing eight of 16 pass attempts for 88 yards. Lazar gained 118 yards of real estate on 16 carries. That’s more than 320 yards of total offense. Lazar also caught four passes for 26 yards while Dominic Wallace had two receptions for 42
yards. Fisher’s completions included a 20-yarder to Carter Rohrer. Lazar launched the scoring with a two-yard TD in the second quarter. The Braves doubled their 7-0 lead on Fisher’s 24-yard scamper to the endzone in the third quarter. Nevin Stoltzfus converted on both PAT kicks. The Braves’ defense, which scored two touchdowns against Octorara the previous week, intercepted Vikings quarterback Nate Shirk twice. Gary Stichier also had two pass attempts for Northern Lebanon, throwing one interception. “Defense is starting to figure it out,” Werner added. “We’re putting ourselves in much better position to make plays. “Nate Miller, who’s a senior, has made an impact on the defensive line,” Werner added. “He has the size and has worked hard. He played a good game against Northern Lebanon.” GIRLS’ SOCCER The Braves came up short against Annville-Cleona (AC) in the final match of the regular season. In a Section Four girls’ soccer match, the Little Dutchmen blanked the Braves 1-0, dropping Pequea’s league mark to 3-4-0. They are 5-5-1 overall. Due to a COVID-19 temporary shutdown, the team didn’t see any action for 11 days. Between Oct. 17 and Oct. 23 (the A-C match), they played five games. “We ended up getting shut down in the middle of things,” said head coach Steve Morris. “The kids gave a great effort. We had five games in seven days and by Friday, the girls were feeling it. “Annville scored midway through
the first half,” he continued. “It was pretty much even after that. We had a few chances, but couldn’t get good shot on goal.” On the Pequea side of the pitch, Maddy Weaver made 11 saves in goal. The junior goalkeeper is one of the players Morris looks forward to seeing in 2021 along with this season’s underclassmen. “We’re still a fairly young team and have good things to look forward to,” said Morris. “Next year looks promising. I had some great efforts from underclassmen. “Elena Esh ended up leading our team in points,” Morris noted. “She did really well as a sophomore.” Freshmen Avery Fisher, Peyton Henshaw and Shania Stoltzfus also did well and are on the coach’s radar for next year. “Shania actually worked her way into a starting position midseason, playing defensively for us in the back line,” he added. “Peyton is generally a defensive player, but I moved her all over the place,” Morris said. “Avery probably spent more minutes at midfield. She had a couple of points for varsity.” BOYS’ SOCCER The Pequea boys’ soccer team finished second in the Section Four standings with a 5-2-0 league mark. They are 7-3-0 overall. Lancaster Catholic ran away with the section title at 8-0-0. With the abbreviated season, only the section champs made it to the L-L League playoffs. Pequea concluded the regular season with a 2-1 victory at home over Annville-Cleona. It was Pequea’s second victory over A-C in four days. In fact, due to the COVID-19 brief shutdown, the boys’ soccer team also crammed five
games into seven days, winning four of five. “It was an unusual year,” head coach Peter Bennett said. “We’re glad and fortunate to have been able to play and perform at the level we did.” The Braves’ Nevin Stoltzfus opened the scoring 17 minutes into the match, scoring off a Peyton Leitch assist. Josh Jarvis provided the assist on Leitch’s goal in the 26th minute. “Nevin has been dynamic and very much involved in our offense,” Bennett said of the junior attacker. “We will have him back for another year,” continued the coach. “This year he stepped up in a featured role and carried the weight. He was a leader on the front line.” The Dutchmen remained scoreless up until the final minutes. They cut the Braves’ lead in half with less than three minutes to the final whistle. Nehemiah Glick grabbed 11 saves as the Dutchmen actually out-shot the Braves 12-6. Glick will be lost to graduation. Among the key returnees next year will be Dylan Ratjavong. “Dylan had four assists for us,” said Bennett. “He and Nevin have been playing together for a long time. They are two seniors we’re looking forward to seeing next year.” As is often the case in high school sports, teams need to reload as

talented starters graduate. “We feel pretty good for the system we’ve had in place for a few years,” Bennett said. “Guys have been able to step up through the ranks. “Our junior varsity team went undefeated this year and won the section championship for the third year in a row,” continued the coach. “Because of the success at that level, hopefully that can continue for us. “I feel confident watching them succeed and feel they can come up and face the challenge at varsity.”

suggestion to look for a PT who will treat the whole client, not just an isolated body part. “ We know now that many issues that people come to see us for are multifactorial, and you need a PT that can evaluate and address all your impairments appropriately.” When finding a PT, it may help clients to ask questions such as how long an evaluation typically takes and who will provide care during treatment. Many PTs work with
physical therapy assistants (PTAs), and they may have PT and PTA students completing practicums as well. “Different clinics have different protocols they use,” Bolen explained. PT clinics must follow CDC guidelines regarding COVID19 mitigation. Everyone in a facility must wear masks at all times, social distancing is implemented as needed, and all equipment and surfaces are sanitized after use and at the end of each day.

“It is healthy for our joints to be exposed to compressive forces when walking because it helps lubricate the joints, and when we sit for long periods of time, we lose out on that benefit,” Bolen said. “Along with that concept, it is super important to stay hydrated.” It is time to seek physical therapy if discomfort impacts the way a person performs their usual activities or they are living with chronic, nagging issues, Bolen suggested. If getting dressed, sitting, or walking causes pain, a PT can help. PTs are medical professionals who are licensed to evaluate and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological issues in a variety of settings. Many Pennsylvania insurance companies, Medicare excluded, allow clients to see PTs directly without referrals from primary care physicians. Each state has its own laws regarding direct access, Bolen said. There are many clinic options in the area, so selecting a PT often comes down to personality. “Get someone that listens to you and that you can have a conversation with. You will see your PT often, so it is good for you to feel comfortable talking to them,” Bolen said, adding a

At the intake appointment for a recurring issue, I commented offhand to my physical therapist (PT) that one of my shoulders was feeling sore. I joked that the reason could be due to dressing up to leave the house more often after several months of living in pajamas during the shutdown. It turns out that my hypothesis was not so farfetched. “I’m seeing a lot more of those issues,” said CPRS Granite Run PT Olivia Bolen. “I’m seeing increases in low back and neck pain, likely due to decreased overall activity levels because people are out of their usual routine, and (have) poor work setups at
home. Sometimes arthritic flare-ups can occur.” Office workers, in particular, may be experiencing pain because after years of regularly sitting at workstations designed for their specific tasks, they suddenly had to make do with a coffee table and a kitchen chair, a bed and stacks of pillows, or even just a seat on the floor with a wall for back support. For the first week or two after the March shutdown, the makeshift seating might have been fine, but with remote work continuing indefinitely, the uncomfortable seating has taken its toll on some individuals. To stave off issues, Bolen recommends individuals use desks where they can rest their forearms comfortably at 90-degree angles to decrease the likelihood of lifting their shoulders in a shrug when typing. Also, computer monitors should be at eye level so users do not have to flex or extend their necks for long periods of time. “This will help mitigate tightness and restriction through the shoulder/neck region,” Bolen said. “These tips can also be applied to the low back. Sitting in a supportive chair that allows you to keep both feet on the floor will reduce low back stress as well as fight the urge to lean forward.” If individuals do not have the space or the finances to create an ergonomic workstation at home, they can still participate in positive work habits like taking regular breaks to stand up and move.

The Salvation Army Seeks Help To #RescueChristmas Christmas is coming, but like so much this year, it may look markedly different. Uncertainty surrounds one of the quintessential signs of the holiday - The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign. With store closings across the country, a decrease in in-per-
son visits to retail locations, and individuals carrying less cash, the red kettles may be fewer in number and might collect a reduced amount compared with previous years. In hopes of offsetting the anticipated decrease and to
keep up with the increased need for services, The Salvation Army USA has launched #RescueChristmas. The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps distributed water and information about #RescueChristmas on Sept. 18 to kickstart local fundraising efforts.
Lancaster commanding officer Maj. Dean Satterlee noted that the Red Kettle campaign has historically been The Salvation Army’s main fundraising campaign. “We need the community’s help more than ever this year to help us rescue Christmas for so many in need,” Satterlee said. “We know the Lancaster community has always answered the call to help those in need, and we are optimistic this campaign will be no different.” With more people facing hardship this year, the opportunity to help is greater than ever. “Because of COVID-19, we have seen our 2020 service numbers grow to be significantly higher,” Satterlee said. “After the Great Recession of 2008 ended, The Salvation Army served an additional 10
million people over the following three years, and we expect a similar prolonged need from this current pandemic.” Since March, The Salvation Army USA has provided more than 100 million meals, which is a 155% increase over the same period last year. In addition to the need for food relief, housing has been a main focus of The Salvation Army’s recent service. With many Americans owing money for missed rent or mortgage payments, the organization anticipates a substantial increase in requests for emergency financial help for expenses such as rent/mortgage payments, utility bills, and food. Locally, The Salvation Army has provided almost $13,000 in rental and utility assistance since March.
“ We have served over 10,000 meals with our food relief assistance so far during this pandemic,” Satterlee reported. “In addition, we have clocked thousands of hours of disaster relief, social service, and emotional spiritual care given by dozens of employees and volunteers during this time.” Since 1865, The Salvation Army has been providing social and spiritual services to communities around the world. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. For more information about the #RescueChristmas campaign or to make a contribution, readers may call The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps at 717-397-7565 or visit https://pa.salvation army.org/lancaster-pa.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness.
