into an entirely unrelated career. Some people, when they retire, become “gentleman farmers,” with a few acres and a handful of cattle that they can manage with low stress and minimal effort. Jason and his wife, Tay, had a much bigger dream, and they bought a 1,000-acre farm in Louisburg, N.C. The one problem? Neither Jason nor Tay had experience farming. Just as he did with football skills, Jason turned to YouTube to learn what he needed to run a farm. “I grew up with a little bit of a green thumb, did a little bit of landscaping with my father, as far as planting shrubs and trees and flowers here and there, but doing it on a large scale? No, this was totally brand new to me,” Jason explained in an episode of “Growing a Greener See Ag Banquet pg 6

Four different Pequea Valley High School classes, including the Advanced Placement U.S. History class, recently visited a local archaeological dig. This is an exploratory dig in anticipation of a new bridge being built. The archaeologist talked to the students about how people’s knowledge of history can be dramatically changed just by finding new evidence in one key area. Students were shown the proposed blueprints for the new bridge, as well as older maps dating back to the 1800s that show a bridge in that area. Students also were able to see the soil layers. The students are just finishing a unit about the Revolutionary War and how Lancaster County was involved in this conflict. Students learned that the topmost layer of soil from that period See Dig Site pg 14

About a decade ago, Diana Vuolo, founder/executive director of SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time), was an empty nester. A professional violinist and music teacher, she listened as her husband, Chuck, a pastor, described the trauma suffered by the children of the incarcerated offenders he was working with. “My husband was doing a lot of pastoring with criminal offenders, and I was starting to see the families up close and
seeing how devastating parental incarceration was for children,” said Diana, who asked herself what she could do to help. “I thought music would be a great way to help them, and that’s what I had to give. I saw (music) was healing for them (and helped them) to realize they See SWAN pg 4

“We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the 2018 holiday season. “One of the things that is important is that people have that hope during the holidays from knowing that someone cares,” said
McDevitt. MHALC is looking toward Christmas 2019 with hopes that more churches, youth groups, businesses, families, and other organizations and individuals will get involved in the Gifts of Joy program. MHA representatives will give individual or group donors a list of items a patient has requested. Many requests are for items that meet basic needs such as batteries, socks, or a phone charger. Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with MHALC, noted that for those fighting mental health issues,

Pequea E.C. Church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, will host a concert titled “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns and Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. “Then Sings My Soul,” an original musical presentation by LeeP Productions, features four professional vocalists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting historical moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, the program shares the history behind more than 30 well-known hymns, many of which were written as a result of tragic and trying circumstances. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” and “Just As I Am.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing. The performers seek not only to entertain audiences, but
also to educate them on hymns and their histories, as well as honor the memory of Billy Graham. Admission is free, and no tickets are needed for entry. A freewill offering will be received with a portion of the proceeds going to the Billy Graham Library. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. After the service, all in attendance will be invited to enjoy a time of food and fellowship and an opportunity to meet the performers. Support programs include Compeer Lancaster, Community Support Programs, and other support groups, which Leckow noted provide socialization as well as help with specific problems. “Support groups are an alternative or supplement to counseling, where (patients) can talk to peers who are in the same situation,” said Leckow. Education services provided by MHALC include a wellness academy that features a variety of speakers, school-based training, and a partnership with Lancaster County Prison that helps connect inmates to support in prison and after they are released. MHALC strives to stop the progression of mental illness in individuals within the county. “We try to prevent people from coming to a desperate hopeless place,” said Leckow. “ We are working for every counselor and service provider out there (to help connect patients with long-term support).” Readers who would like to learn more about MHALC may visit www.mhalancaster.org. loneliness is often a problem. “Mental health (issues) can be very isolating,” remarked Leckow, adding that patients may have lost supporting relationships during the struggle. “(Patients) might not have that social connection to celebrate the holidays the way we might,” said Leckow. McDevitt agreed. “Many may feel forgotten,” she said. “It’s a time when you see so much depicting togetherness, family, friends, and holiday parties.” McDevitt said that the holidays are a time when many residents are looking for ways to give. “At Christmas, the community is especially generous,” she said. “So many of us are full of gratitude, and we want to give back. This is an opportunity for people to support (other members of the community).” MHALC provides services to area residents struggling with mental illness issues and their families in three main areas advocacy, support, and education. Advocacy services include suicide prevention programs, including a gunlock program and suicide prevention training, peer mentorship, and child and family advocacy. things she does. She also appreciates how participating in the musical program affects her outlook. “I like that music can change your mood,” she said. “If someone is sad, music can brighten up their day.” Willow, who is in first grade, called SWAN “a magical place.” “I have always liked music, and I like to be in programs,” said Willow, who listed a number of instruments she has had a chance to play through SWAN. Willow added that she likes to perform, even though she may be a little nervous to start. “After I perform, I feel happy and I am ready to enjoy the rest of my day and think about this wonderful memory,” she said. “It makes me feel confident and gives me courage.” Diana explained that performance is an important part of the program, noting that participants perform for family, friends, and community members in settings like schools, nursing homes, and First Friday events. One of SWAN’s first students is now helping to teach others. Bryanna Still, who is now a student at Dayspring Christian Academy, has dealt with a lot of trauma, but she has excelled musically. “She has made wonderful decisions,” said Diana, of Bryanna, who assisted at the SWAN summer camp and won accolades from the instructors. “We can help children with their behavior, physical, emotional, scholastic, and social issues if we understand what is going on in their lives,” said Diana. “Their present circumstances do not need to determine who they are or what they do.” Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

weren’t the only ones (struggling with this issue).” The result was SWAN, a onehour after-school music program for School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. Both group and private lessons are now held in 13 SDoL schools. SWAN also has a summer camp, which meets at the Wharton Business School in Lancaster. “We give the children 120 hours of instruction during camp,” said Diana, who noted that once the SDoL recognized the need for the program, SWAN was welcomed into the schools. “The district is becoming more trauma informed and trauma aware,” said Diana, who added that recent state laws will require teachers to become more trauma informed. Currently, SWAN receives referrals of students whose parents have a history of incarceration from intervention specialists and family counselors who work for the district. Each Tuesday at 3 p.m., Lauren Reyes, a SWAN music educator, meets with about 10 students at Wickersham Elementary. Her hour with the group includes singing and working with instruments such as hand drums, drumline instruments, guitars, and ukuleles. “What Lauren is bringing this year is a program that uses melody and percussion along with singing,” said Diana. Reyes said that she wants to promote improvisation and collaboration to encourage students to create. “I try to get a good community working together,” she said, noting that the approach she uses is multicultural. People with diabetes are more likely to develop blinding eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts. Yet recent studies have revealed low awareness of the issue among ethnicities at higher risk of diabetes. A seasonal tradition is reaching its 20th anniversary this year. The Pumpkin Olympics will return on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. Farm owners Jeff and Rhonda Stoltzfus have been putting leftover pumpkins to good use for the past two decades and raising funds for local organizations at the same time. The Pumpkin Olympics will offer all kinds of fun games, including competitions such as pumpkin throwing, pumpkin carrying and pumpkin races. A pumpkin pie eating contest and pumpkin carving demonstration will also be features of the day. For those who would like to see pumpkins fly, there will be two pumpkin chucking teams on-site, demonstrating their catapultstyle throwing machines that can send pumpkins flying across the farm fields. The Smokin Llamas and Tree Buckets teams will be on hand to chuck pumpkins and talk to visitors. “This is the fun event. We come here to try new things and spend our leftover pumpkins,” said Tom Bush of the Smokin Llamas. For those who would like pumpkins for holiday pies and Thanksgiving décor, there will be a booth where visitors can purchase the perfect pumpkin for baking or decorating. “The pumpkin crop was very good this year, though some of the largest ones didn’t quite get the size because of the dry weather at the end,” Rhonda said. “We planted over 50 different varieties of different sizes, shapes and colors to get a good array. The newest one this year for us was a yellow one called Mellow Yellow.” This year’s biggest pumpkin at the farm weighs in excess of 800 pounds. It will be dropped from a crane at 3:15 p.m. An even bigger bang will follow during the grand finale - the pumpkin avalanche - when truckloads of pumpkins will be dumped in a great wave, crashing downhill to shatter and break into pieces that will make for enjoyable eating for the cattle on the farm. Everyone is invited to join in the “smashfest” that will follow the avalanche to help break any pumpkins that did not split apart in the spill. Volunteers scheduled to provide assistance at the event include members of the Parkesburg Baptist and Maple Grove Mennonite youth groups, as well as students from Octorara Junior-Senior High School, Lancaster Mennonite School and The Parkesburg POINT youth center. “It’s mostly junior high and high school students running the games. The adults help with the gate and supervising,” Rhonda said. “It is a very good experience to give back to the community by serving. It’s an environment where they can serve and play themselves too. It’s a good mix to get kids excited about serving.”
The POINT executive director Dwayne Walton is enthusiastic about the event. “First, there’s seeing how Jeff and Rhonda support the community through this event, but it also gives some of our students the opportunity to help,” he said. “It gives them the opportunity to set up, run games and even clean up.” Plenty of food will be available, much of it with a pumpkin theme. There will also be barbecue and a baked goods table. The Octorara Football Boosters’ food wagon will be on-site.

The Browns named their new property First Fruits Farm and pledged to give the best of each harvest to people in need in the community. In 2014, its first year of operation, the farm produced more than 120,000 pounds of sweet potatoes and more than 10,000 pounds of cucumbers. Since then, the farm has produced nearly 1 million pounds of food, and all of it has been donated to food pantries and churches. “We know we are giving our best. Lancaster Chamber’s annual agriculture industry banquet, which will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. “He definitely has a message that aligns with what the Chamber wants: giving back to the community,” said Lancaster Chamber senior business programming manager Sandi Thompson. “He took a big risk … but he felt it was his calling. We want people to follow their dreams.” The banquet will open with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The plated dinner will be served at 6 p.m. While Jason will be the guest speaker, a short program will include the recognition of this year’s century farm and the recipient of the George C. Delp
Award, which honors a person or business that makes a significant contribution to the agriculture community and demonstrates an outstanding commitment to preserving or enhancing agriculture. Additionally, Lancaster Chamber president Tom Baldrige will speak, and Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Cheryl Cook is slated to address the attendees. Thompson noted that while the Lancaster Chamber no longer has a dedicated agriculture services department in order to serve all industries, it has continued to host the banquet because it honors the foundation of Lancaster County. “Celebrating agriculture is a big part of our community,” Thompson said. “We want to continue to recognize that ag is part of a large economic drive in the community.” People who want to be part of that celebration may purchase tickets to attend the banquet or sign up
to be an event sponsor or table patron. Thompson requested that tickets be reserved by Friday, Nov. 8, but she will accommodate walkins at the event. Attire for the event will range from denim and flannel to suits and ties, and all will be welcome. As a nod to First Fruits Farm’s commitment to feeding the hungry, attendees are asked to bring nonperishable proteins, such as tuna or peanut butter, to the event. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will distribute the donations to local organizations. For more information about the event or to purchase tickets, readers may visit www.lancaster chamber.com and click on Signature Events under the Events & Programs tab. To become a sponsor or patron, individuals may contact Thompson at 717-2396963 or sthompson@lancaster chamber.com.

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Lancaster County (CASA) will host information sessions on how to become a court appointed special advocate for a child in the foster care system in Lancaster County. The sessions are free of charge and open to the public.
An information session will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster. A second session will be offered on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. Both sessions will
run from noon to 1 p.m. Foster care is meant to be a temporary intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of a child. CASA volunteers are empowered by the courts to help ensure children find safe, nurturing, and permanent homes. Advocates work one-on-one with a child or group of siblings. They get to know the children, gather important information from reports and professionals, and advocate for the children’s best interests related to their education, health, living arrangements, and general well-being.
No prior experience is necessary. CASA will provide all the training needed, and a volunteer supervisor will offer resources and support throughout the volunteers’ service. Volunteer advocates usually dedicate 12 to 15 hours per month to their CASA duties. Preregistration is required to attend an information session. For more information or to register, readers may contact CASA at 717-208-3280 or casa@casalancaster.org. To learn more, readers may visit www.casalancaster.org.

For 10 weeks, entrepreneurs have participated in Ben Franklin’s TechCelerator program, an intensive business startup boot camp program that helps to launch startups across central Pennsylvania. Seven local tech entrepreneurs will pitch presentations to a panel of judges at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at The Candy Factory, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster. The winning presenters will receive up to $10,000. Companies that will present pitches include the following. Boostpoint (Sam Beiler and Jared Neff) provides an easy way for small businesses to advertise on Facebook and Instagram at a lower price than a marketing agency might charge; Design Trail (Veronika Miller) is a local recommendation/review platform like Yelp that focuses only on the design market; Fiction Formula (Benbruno Nkapbela) has developed a new approach to drug discovery that integrates systems, biology, and ethnopharmacology to mitigate the time and risk of finding novel targets; and Gavl (Carl Richter and Takaaki Agawa) is developing a Tinder-esque competition app that will randomly compare two pieces of creative content - such as art, music, or photos - in a peer-versus-peer contest format. Also, MakeCents DIY Garage (Amelia Pharo-Frank) provides safe, convenient, reliable, and customer-orientated service bay rentals for the shade tree mechanics needing space; Mission Athletics (Marvin Sanders) is creating a mobile app that provides under-served athletes

PV Gridders Battle Crusaders in Season Finale being moved to one of the starting receiver spots. He obviously knows the routes having played quarterback.” BOYS’ SOCCER The season came to a close for the Pequea Valley boys’ soccer team on Saturday, October 26. The Braves lost a heartbreaking overtime contest to Oley Valley in the opening round of the District Three Class-AA on the road. The Lynx (18-2) came into the districts as the fourth-seeded team and thus hosted fifth-seeded Pequea. “They are a good team. They were the Berks County champions,” head coach Peter Bennett said of the Lynx. “We were able to hang with them and play our game.” The Lynx scored first and the Braves (15-5-0) responded quickly. The game remained 1-1 until the crushing 2-1 defeat with only seconds remaining in the first overtime period. “We had T.J. Hershey back from his injury,” Bennett said. “We had a quick response because he scored 45 seconds after their goal about midway through the first half. I was pleased with us responding well to their score. “From there on out, it was pretty much back and forth,” he added. “Both goalies made very good saves. It was a shame to see either side lose in this kind of a game.” Pequea Valley’s defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Nehemiah Glick, kept the opposition off the scoreboard. The Lynx scored the game-winner as a byproduct of a set piece late in the first overtime. “They had a free kick on one side of our 18 box,” Bennett explained. “We were able to clear it to the other side. They had a guy at the near post who, after it pinged around, was able to put it away. “We had 48 seconds left in the first overtime,” continued the coach. “It was disappointing that we weren’t able to see it through the first overtime.” The fate of the 2019 squad was similar to that of 2018, which went 14-4-2 and also suffered a first-round loss in districts. “Unfortunately, we ran into the Berks County champions then too,” Bennett said, referring to the season-ending loss to Fleetwood in 2018. The Braves boasted six all-stars in the Section Three nominations. Hershey, Josh Bailey, Bennett Nordhoff, and Kyle Diller made first-team Section Three all-star while Brandon Ratjavong Photo by Connor Hollinger and Josh Gingerich made second team. Braves Xavier Padilla (33), Dustin Huber (24), John Smith (58) and Carter Rohrer (3) gang up on Lancaster Catholic’s Alex Cruz during Pequea Valley’s 52-7 loss to the host Crusaders in the season This half dozen are part of the 11 seniors the squad will miss next year. finale on October 25. “Nevin Stoltzfus is coming back,” said The team’s roster containing slightly more than 25 players also Antonio Lazar’s 10-yard rushing prompted the coaching staff to utilize touchdown put the Braves on the players in dual roles. board in the football team’s final “Almost everybody is a two-way game of the 2019 campaign. Plus this year for the Crusaders, who wrapped up we have been injury free - part of that the regular season at 9-1 (8-1 league). has to do with the conditioning. All three of Harley’s rushing attempts “Going into next year, with the expewent for touchdowns as he dashed to rience we’ve gained this year, we’ll have the Braves’ end zone from 49, 60 and 18 returning lettermen.” he noted. “As 50 yards out. I’m looking forward to working next year with this group. Their off-season conditioning is going to help us have a turnaround next season.” One of the players expected to return in 2020 for his senior year on varsity is Nate Fisher. He was switched to quarterback by Werner and responded nicely. “He really came on this year,” said Werner. “This kid had never played football before, believe it or not. I penciled him in as my starter. He has a tremendous arm and is a phenomenal athlete. He’s fast and smart. He can’t wait until next year.” Not coming back next year will be senior Collin Bailey. It was a season full of challenges for Jeff Werner and his squad as a young yet determined Pequea Valley team finished 0-10 (0-9 league). Inexperience and filling roster spots were what Werner faced at times throughout the season. “The initial challenge was the inexperience and playing teams bigger than us,” Werner said. “We have gone up against competition that out-sized us. I’ve had to put people on my line that offered to help us because of their athleticism, but were not linemen. Our center and left guard are brand new starters this year.”

Writeface will host “Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” at the Ware Center on Nov. 10. Participants will include (front, from left) Karl Dunkleberger, Gerrie Strobel, (back) Chieu Le, Annie Ginder, Scott Hower, Marc Zito, and Stephen Shaw. Writeface programs. She feels strongly about Agent Orange awareness and advocates for survivors of the dangerous chemical. “There’s so much more to be said about it,” Strobel said, citing Agent Orange side effects and untreated PTSD as challenges taking a toll on Vietnam veterans and the inspirations for artwork that she will exhibit in the Nov. 10 event. Admission to “Veterans, Values, and Voices” will be free of charge. The event will take
place in the Ware Center’s 400-seat Steinman Hall, and the organizers hope to have a capacity crowd. “We want them to see the value of what we’re doing with the veteran community and be more inclined to support it,” Ginder said. “It’s all about getting a better (sense) of the veteran experience, getting the general

“Veterans, Values, and Voices: Words in Search of Our Missing Peace II” will showcase the veteran experience through art, poetry, music, and storytelling. The event, which was first held in 2018, will be hosted by Writeface at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10. Writeface co-founder Scott Hower, who is an Air Force veteran and a Conestoga resident, noted that the event was created after Lancaster’s Spoken Word Festival was discontinued. Writeface is dedicated to helping military veterans develop a healthier spirit through guided writing exercises and had led a class at the Ware Center in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, so creating a similar event seemed like a natural fit. “We picked it up as a way for veterans to tell their stories the way they want to tell them,” said Writeface co-founder Annie Ginder of Willow Street. At the event on Nov. 10, about 14 or 15 people will participate in some way. The majority are veterans, although Ginder and several other civilians will also be part of the program. “Everybody knows a veteran,” Hower explained. Marc Zito, an Army veteran who lives in Ephrata, and East Lampeter Township resident Stephen Shaw, who served in both the Marines and the Army, will
reflect on transitions. “In 20 years in the military, (my life) used to be go, go, go, but now I have stopped,” Zito remarked, adding that he has gone from a highly scheduled life to uncertainty. “Now I’m wrapping my mind around that.” Shaw agreed. “It’s a cultural transition,” he said. “You go from civilian life to the military and back to civilian life. Before you moved away from home, you had support, and in the military, you had support. Now (that) you’re out, you have to do it on your own. It can be overwhelming.” Writeface’s process helps individuals clarify their thoughts by putting everything on paper and then reviewing and reflecting. Army veteran Karl Dunkleberger of Mount Joy has been part of Writeface for five years, and he has learned and grown through the experience. “My content is more focused and concentrated, thanks to Scott. He gave me freedom not to worry about my spelling,” Dunkleberger commented. “Annie has given me lightness to my artwork. It balances out the darkness.” In contrast to Dunkleberger’s longevity, Chieu Le of Lancaster is new to Writeface. He has been speaking at area high schools about his Vietnam War experiences as a member of the Vietnamese air force and later the United States Army. “I escaped communism in Vietnam at the last minute and was embraced by the warm arms of the United States,” Le said. Navy medic Gerrie Strobel now lives in Windsor and gladly comes to Lancaster for
