LCHS To Stage Interactive Mystery HayLoft Ice Cream Supports Allegany Boys Camp By Ann Mead Ash

The cast of the Lancaster Catholic High School production of “Murder’s in the Heir” has been practicing the interactive whodunit for presentations on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 15 through 17, at the school. By Ann Mead Ash

When high school directors consider fall plays, their minds may turn to the possibility of staging a show with a healthy dose of suspense. “I was looking for a murder mystery comedy,” said Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High

School (LCHS) drama director. “Murder’s in the Heir” by Billy St. John met Wagner’s qualification, but the show also includes a chance for audience members to participate and help determine the outcome of the play. “It’s kind of like the game Clue, where every (character) has a weapon and a motive,” said See LCHS Play pg 2

Many area children and their parents will remember visiting HayLoft Candles at 95 S. Groffdale Road, Leola. For years, the location was the site of a petting zoo and a place to buy ice cream treats and scented candles. In the spring, HayLoft Ice Cream, at the same location, became a nonprofit organization raising funds to help troubled boys find success. “We opened May 14 with the sole purpose of supporting the Allegany Boys Camp,” explained Merv Lapp, manager of See HayLoft Ice Cream pg 5

Merv Lapp (right), manager of HayLoft Ice Cream, and his wife, Carol, are helping to support the Allegany Boys Camp through their work at the nonprofit Leola store, which sells ice cream, sandwiches, candles, and more.

“Favorite Things” Concert To Feature Family Members By Ann Mead Ash “We respect and we love one another, and you don’t always find that combination,” said Michael Jamanis, violinist, of his mother, Frances Veri, a pianist. The characteristics of that type of relationship are obvious between the two, who will be performing a special fall concert at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). “I used to have to say, ‘Michael, did you practice?’” said a chuckling Veri. “Now he says, ‘Mom, did you practice?’” “These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things,” a free concert in the round featuring Jamanis on violin and Veri on piano, will be held at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Main Auditorium. The idea for the title came about when Tony Brill, LCHS director of Fine and Performing Arts, explained to Jamanis and Veri that they would be in the center of the audience on the auditorium floor. “It will be a much more intimate concert, and I love that because there’s more audience interaction,” said Jamanis. Veri likened the setting to inviting the audience into the family living

Wagner of the drama, which will be staged at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 15 through 17. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. each evening. The plot revolves around dictatorial Simon Starkweather, played by Isaac Schwartz. Each of Starkweather’s heirs has a reason to do away with the ancient

billionaire. In 1964, Starkweather invites his family and employees to his mansion so he can announce the contents of his will. First, Lois van Zandt, Starkweather’s lawyer, played by Natalie Knox, tells the group the will leaves a fortune to Starkweather’s niece Fiona, played by Bernadette Fertal; her son Jordan, played by Xavier Miles LeFevre; Starkweather’s greatniece Paula Thompson, played by Bronte Spidaliere; and Starkweather’s grandson Simon III, also played by Schwartz, as well as to his many servants. Then the

lawyer announces that within hours the document will become invalid. The heirs and staff - the butler, played by Oliver Klemmer; the maid, played by Maddi Lewis; the cook, played by Jami Ely; the housekeeper, played by Gloria Cao; and the handyman, played by Aaron Kern - are not happy, and when the lights go out, Simon is discovered murdered. Simon III enlists the help of detective Mike Davis, played by Jim Mikulski, to determine the identity of his grandfather’s killer. Miss Withers, the nurse, will be played by Adeline Hibshman, and secretary Kathy Collins will be played by Aria Yang. Lily Bauer will play the usher.

When the first half of the play ends, audience members may vote by secret ballots, which will be gathered at intermission, to determine who the killer is, and the cast will stage the rest of the play based on the results. According to Wagner, the ensemble cast of 13 has been rehearsing nine different endings, among the other unusual twists and turns in the play. In addition to learning the nine endings, Wagner noted that members of the ensemble are learning to be on stage for long periods of time without lines to say. “Remaining in character and tackling line delivery to make the lines funny (is a challenge),” said Wagner. “There is a lot of humor,

but it is subtle humor so if the students can bring their characters to life, the audience is (more likely) to understand the humor.” Wagner hopes that audiences will enjoy the opportunity to take part in something that focuses on entertainment value. “It’s about letting the audience escape and laugh,” said Wagner, who added that cast members are already having fun with the show. “The students love it,” she noted, adding that the students are bonding over the experience. “It’s a team-building play,” she added. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to “Murder’s in the Heir” may email tbrill@ lchsyes.org or call 717-509-0310.

Pumpkin Olympics To Benefit Local Organizations By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

White Horse Fire Hall (On the Corner of Rt. 340 & 897 South)

After Halloween, the demand for pumpkins drops, but the leftovers will be put to good use at the 19th annual Pumpkin Olympics, set for Saturday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen. Visitors may take part in pumpkin games of all kinds, including competitions such as pumpkin throwing, a pumpkin carry and pumpkin races. “There’s always a new game or two,” organizer Rhonda Stoltzfus said. The new game this year will allow visitors to attempt to guide a small pumpkin through a maze board using ropes and a sling. Some people take pumpkin sports very seriously, including the Smokin Llamas and Chucksters pumpkin chucking teams. They will be using human-powered machines to throw pumpkins for long distances. In addition to their pumpkin chucking demonstration, there will be a time to meet and greet the teams and find out more about their throwing devices. “We’re coming to throw pumpkins,” Smokin Llamas member Tom Bush said. “We want to try out a few adjustments while we’re here, and it draws a crowd to do the rest of the stuff.” There will also be a pumpkin carving demonstration, a pumpkin pie eating competition and more. Hot food will be sold by the Octorara Football Boosters, with Octorara Softball

Outside a duck pond is featured, and visitors may purchase pellets to feed the water fowl. Lapp noted that plans for the location include adding a playground on one corner of the property. HayLoft began the transition to a nonprofit entity when Dave Yoder, who owned the ice cream shop and still owns the building, approached the Allegany Boys Camp board and asked if the group wanted to utilize the building. “It had been the vision of the board to do something like this,” noted Lapp. The Allegany board set up a board of six to oversee the HayLoft project. One of the board members knew Lapp from church and asked if he would consider becoming the manager. According to Lapp, HayLoft is currently open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays, but he added that those hours will probably be adjusted during the winter months. Readers who wish to know more about HayLoft may visit www.haylofticecream.com or search for “HayLoft Ice Cream” on Facebook.

The offerings at HayLoft are not restricted to sweet treats, however. “We have salads and yogurt parfaits,” said Lapp, who stated that sandwich wraps and soup will likely be added during the winter months. Soft pretzels are made at the facility, and pretzel sandwich flavors including chicken and ranch, ham and cheese sandwiches, pepperoni, and hot dog are on the menu. HayLoft, who added that all the on-site staff except the managers are volunteers. Allegany Boys Camp, located in Oldtown, Md., was founded in 2011 as an expansion of Bald Eagle Boys Camp in Mill Hall, Pa. “They cater to troubled boys ages 9 to 16, and they work with them for up to two years,” said Lapp. Allegany operates with the understanding that all young men wish to succeed, but that all boys may not have the emotional tools needed to control behavior when faced with challenging events. In a wilderness setting, campers learn how to build their own shelter, where they may live for up to two years. Physical resources to build the structure and firewood for heat and cooking are provided. HayLoft has a structure built by the boys on display so customers can get an idea of how the boys live. “A group of the boys came up here and put that together for us,” noted Lapp. While at Allegany, the boys learn to build relationships as well as shelter. Campers are counseled and supervised by Christian men, and positive peer pressure is encouraged as successes and failures are evaluated. Hands-on learning experiences

Fire Safety from pg 1 come yearly during Fire Prevention Week, which in 2018 was held from Oct. 8 through 12. Brubaker said that 75 students from the Conestoga Valley Homeschoolers group visited the fire station during the morning. In the afternoon, students from four of the seven Plain community schools located within the fire company’s territory visited. The fire company expects students from the other three Plain community schools to attend the 2019 event. Brubaker said that the fire education training begins with a classroom video that discusses “stop, drop, and roll,” “stay low and go,” and the need for two exits in a building. The children learn about the importance of smoke detectors. They also learn about dialing 911 and the need to know their own addresses. Outside in the fire station parking lot, Brubaker described five different stations where children could learn about safety and experience some of the activities associated with firefighting. “There is a fun station where they get to handle the hose line,” said Brubaker. “We have a station where the firefighters gear up and explain what a firefighter does, and we have a smoke trailer that simulates a fire they can crawl through.” In addition, Gordonville Ambulance Service was on-site to discuss the services it provides, and the Paradise Fire Company brought along boats for use in water rescues. “(The Paradise Fire Company) had 34 water rescues they were dispatched for last month,” said Brubaker. Readers who would like to learn more about the Kinzer Fire Company may visit www.kinzer fire.com.

on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive, Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in. One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out to be a soccer goalie, but his family couldn’t afford to buy any, Ward relayed. “So the gloves turned out to be perfect. Ward explained that families may use a medium-size shoebox they already own, purchase a designated Operation Christmas Child box at Hobby Lobby, or contact any of

Every November, during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, thousands of shoeboxes stuffed to the gills with small toys, school supplies, and hygiene items are collected to deliver to children in need around the world. While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year, Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000. National Collection Week is set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a

distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves, shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before. “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location, Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person. In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending

Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website. On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public. The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate. The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind. Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site ExtraGive Tshirt printing, and a family photo station. Steven Courtney will present live music. The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns

that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012.

For more information about the 2018 Extraordinary Give, including a list of participating organizations, readers may visit www.ExtraGive.org. The members of Bart Township Fire Company, 11 Furnace Road, Quarryville, will host their second annual veterans breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 6 to 10 a.m. “We want to show appreciation to the veterans for their service,” said special division member Darlene Swisher. “They protect us and take care of us, so I think it’s important that we show them respect. It’s an honor to do it.” Military veterans will be admitted to the breakfast free of charge. Swisher noted that the special division supports the fire company through fundraising. The group meets at the fire hall on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Guests are welcome to attend. The proceeds from the breakfast will be used for “whatever (we) need and the upkeep of the kitchen,” Swisher said. “It all goes back into the fire company.” There will be a wide variety of food served buffet-style at the meal, including sausage, bacon, ham, scrapple, chipped beef gravy, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, pancakes, pastries, juice, and coffee. Volunteers will begin cooking at 4 a.m. in order to have everything ready in time for hungry diners. Fire company member Debbie Hoover reported that more than 300 people attended last year’s breakfast. Additionally, the fire company will host a craft show on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A total of 40 vendors will sell unique items; direct sales vendors will not be part of the event. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus are slated to visit at 10 a.m. Bart Township Fire Company covers all of its namesake as well as parts of Eden, Sadsbury, Colerain, and Paradise townships. The allvolunteer organization, as well as its special division, is always accepting new members. Volunteering with the fire company in any capacity is appreciated. “I wanted to give back to my community and to make it a better place,” Hoover said, explaining why she joined the fire company.

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster will accept applications for multisensory language training in Orton-Gillingham. The 12month training program will lead to CDC (Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.) certified dyslexia practitioner 1 (CDP-1). Orton-Gillingham is a structured, sequential approach to multisensory language remediation. Candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree and be willing to commit time to training and after-school tutoring. All clearances required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, including Act 31, must be submitted prior to the beginning of training. The cost of these background checks will be borne by the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster provided the trainee completes the training. This training program is of value to all teachers, but especially to those in the fields of reading, special education, and ELL. However, a background in the field of education is not required. This program is also ideal for retirees with a love of learning who want to make a difference in the life of a child. The training program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and International Dyslexia Association, which sets the standards for rigor and length of training.

Family Restoration Worship Center (FRWC), 313 W. Liberty St., Lancaster, will distribute Thanksgiving meal baskets to families in need from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. Along with the baskets, light refreshments will be served and some articles of clothing will be available. Baskets will be given out to families who register by calling 717-490-2149 before Thursday, Nov. 15. Volunteers are also needed to help prepare the baskets. In addition to this project, FRWC makes food and clothing available to neighboring helping facilities and provides support to member students and those who come from nearby Franklin & Marshall College. For more information, readers may contact the Rev. Jamal Brown at jamal brown23322@gmail.com or 717-490-2149.

Requirements consist of commitment to a minimum of 50 lecture hours and a minimum 100 hours of supervised student practicum. For the student practicum, two students are seen for two hours a week after school hours, one-on-one. Required readings and tests are additional requirements. Training will begin in March with projected completion of May 2020, with no classes scheduled in May or August. Trainees may opt to take the training

for free, with a materials fee. Graduate credit is also available; trainees would need to enroll in the course to earn six credits. A total of 180 Act 48 hours will be awarded free of charge at the completion of training. For more information and an application, readers may contact the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster at 717-4815680 or cdclancasterpa@gmail.com. 12 weeks to prepare and perform in productions. Beginning late 2019, the expansion will focus on the north side of the city block with the several construction plans. Plans include a sky-lit atrium lobby that will bridge the theater’s existing lobby and the Fulton’s education building on Grant Street. The expanded space will allow up to 1,400 patrons to gather. New restrooms planned for the atrium lobby will provide 13 additional facilities. The atrium lobby bar will be a centerpiece for gathering before, during, and after performances. An intimate, private gathering area on the second floor will feature a refreshment area, a restroom, and a coat room to host the Fulton Theatre’s Producer’s Circle members as well as private parties for the community. A performance and rehearsal studio will allow the Fulton to rehearse full productions on-site. The space will feature sprung dance floors and mirrors and will be two stories in height to accommodate all choreographic needs. The rehearsal and performance studio will be able to be transformed into an event space for both Fulton patrons and the community. The space will hold up to 200 people. The exterior of the new rehearsal space also creates an architectural element to Water Street and continues the beautification of Water Street through to the Ware Center. The Fulton Theatre will continue to operate on its normal schedule throughout construction, and productions will not be interrupted. The project in total will have a $29 million budget, which includes a $5 million endowment. As of Aug. 31, the Fulton has raised $21 million. Donations to the campaign can be made at the Fulton Theatre’s Box Office, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster; by visiting www.fultonbreakout.org; or by contacting a member of the Breakout Performance team at 717-394-7133.

Foods from countries that will be new to the meal this year will include dishes from Iraq, the Dominican Republic, and Bolivia. Organizers also hope to have food representing Jamaica. Garcia described pozole, a traditional Mexican dish that will be served. “It’s a type of soup, and this year it will be red,” said Garcia, who added that the soup includes pork, chili peppers, and black corn and that it is served with lettuce, lime, and sometimes sour cream. Tamales will be served, along with traditional Mexican mole, which may contain fruit, chili pepper, nuts, black pepper, cinnamon, and cumin, as well as even some chocolate. The dish from Iraq will feature shish kebab, rice, peas, onions, raisins, almonds, and a type of noodle. Black tea will also be served. A variety of desserts from other countries are generally served at the meal. Garcia noted that this year’s meal will benefit a special cause teenagers who are immigrants living in the New Holland area. According to Garcia, the church is helping to support five teenagers, including two who are students at Garden Spot High School. Some funds will also go to missions. In the past, the fundraiser has supported church maintenance. There is a per-person price to attend the event. Children age 4 and under will be admitted free, and the price of admission for children ages 5 to 11 will be discounted. Readers who have questions may call 717-859-4452 or 717847-4265.
