Library Friends Plan Book Sale, Holiday Yard Sale BY FRANCINE FULTON
hose who attend the book sale taking place at Moores Memorial Library in Christiana will also be able to shop for Thanksgiving and Christmas décor and gifts as part of the Friends of the Library’s combined book sale and holiday yard sale that will open on Thursday, Nov. 11, from 1 to 7 p.m. The sale will continue during regular library hours on Friday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free. The sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library. “Everything will be at reasonable prices that people are used to,” said Jeannette Kolb, Friends vice president. “We will have DVDs (that will be) buy-one-get-one-free and books at a discount. We have a lot of Christmas books.” Also for sale will be leftover donations from the Friends’ yard sale held this past summer, which netted nearly $400 for the library. The yard
T
sale items will be located in the community room next to the bookstore. “(The leftover items) gave us the idea to add to the book sale,” said Friends president Joan Esworthy. Community members who would like to donate yard sale items are asked to bring their donations to the library during operating hours. Books in the Read Moore Book Store, which come from community donations and the library’s collection, are displayed on unique shelving, including a canoe. There are also shelves that were made from a baby grand piano. “Someone didn’t want (the piano) and gave it to one of our members. They gutted it out and made it (into a bookshelf),” explained Karen Woods, Friends treasurer. There is also a young adult section featuring books displayed on skateboards and bookshelves made from rain gutters, which were repurposed by Friends member Janice Crills. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.” See Library pg 11

NationsWorship will virtually unite Christians from around the world on Nov. 19.
During 2020 when COVID-19 restrictions were isolating people from each other, Global Disciples, an organization based in Lancaster, decided to find a way to bring them together. “In the midst of the pandemic, we said, ‘Is there a way for us to gather online and worship God? To gather all across the globe and express our unity in Christ?’” said global worship specialist Tim Bentch.

Bentch said the virtual event, NationsWorship, is significant because it crosses cultural, political, and international boundaries. “It’s a chance for believers to stand together as one, and we won’t allow different perspectives and other COVID divisions to come between us,” he said. For 25 years, Global Disciples has worked with clusters of churches in Africa, Asia, and the Americas to train members of churches in those areas to be missionaries in their homelands. “Our goal is to help people come to

The 2020 event involved videos, Zoom, and livestream technology to bring people together. For 2021, NationsWorship will also include a live component, which will be held at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. available on demand through Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022. According to Bentch, the event will include videos from a number of cultures around the world. “It’s a chance for the church here in America to worship (along) with unique expression of worship from Africa and Asia,” said Bentch. “The worship may come from a village of brand-new believers, and it may be very simple - just clapping and singing,” he said. “Those are parts that really move my heart.” Bentch also described a modern worship song, “Glory to the Righteous One,” which is being written for the event by James and Daniella, a couple in Rwanda who are musicians and worship leaders. “On that song, I am working with people in India, Mexico, Nepal, and Ethiopia and videotaping them singing along on the chorus,” said Bentch. Bentch said that the 2021 NationsWorship is based on Isaiah 24:16, which reads in part, “From the farthest part of the earth comes the sound of songs.” “(There will be) all these voices coming together and worshiping God as one,” said Bentch, who noted that the DOVE worship team will lead several songs and that a diverse worship choir is being created for the event, which Bentch noted has become important for the international partners. “They told us last year, ‘This is the first time we really felt connected,’” explained Bentch, “and we are honored to worship together with our brothers and sisters from diverse places of the world.” DOVE Westgate in Ephrata can accommodate 900 worshipers. Those wishing to attend NationsWorship live are asked to visit http://global disciples.org/nationsworship to register prior to the event.

at Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, instructive, and inspiring,” said Vuolo. “Experiencing music live has an impact emotionally. It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the Youth
Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ violins. “(The students) saw that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in shape and size. Both have four strings and a similarshaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjectives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.”
FENCING SPECIALISTS
Wickersham Elementary students who take part in SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) after-school classes had the opportunity to meet and work with Lancaster Symphony Orchestra musicians.
Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive),
hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Individuals may make donations using a credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit http://www.swan4kids.org.

“Miracle on 34th Street” will be performed at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 11, through Thursday, Dec. 23. Based on the film of the same name, the classic holiday story follows 6-year-old Susan Walker, who finds the idea of believing in Santa a childish notion. However, upon meeting a department store Santa whom she believes may be the real Kris Kringle, Susan takes New York City on a heartwarming journey that shows the difference one girl’s beliefs can make. Cella Berardi, debuting as Susan Walker, will employ her singing, acting and dancing skills for her first role on stage. Berardi’s association with the theater began last summer in See Musical pg 11
