Wreaths Across America Observance To Launch In Pequea Valley Area

Empowering Community To Fight Addiction

By Ann Mead Ash

Honoring local veterans is very important to local resident Paula Diem. After several years of organizing bus trips to Arlington National Cemetery for the wreath laying held there each December, Diem decided to attend the Quarryville observance in 2018. After witnessing the ceremony, Diem decided the veterans in Pequea Valley deserved the same honor. “I decided I would bring it home,” recalled Diem. The results of Diem’s efforts will culminate with a ceremony at noon on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap. Individuals wishing to help place wreaths on more than 1,400 graves in 19 area cemeteries are asked to arrive at the

Joel Jakubowski knows what often happens when a friend or family member becomes addicted. “The most common response is to enable, which keeps people stuck (in addiction),” said Jakubowski, adding, “We think it’s helping, but it’s not.” Working with TTC/Potter’s House and other local organizations, Jakubowski will give advice on how to motivate a person dealing with an addiction to move forward when he speaks on the topic of “Enabling vs. Support” at the fall awareness seminar to be held at Conestoga Church of the Brethren (COB), 141 E. Main St., Leola, on Thursday, Nov. 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. In addition to speaking, See Awareness Seminar pg 8

Cavod To Present “The Gifts Of The Magi” Upward Basketball League Sign-Ups Open By Ann Mead Ash

Cordell Huyard, who is directing Cavod Theatre’s “The Gifts of the Magi” this holiday season, is amazed that the organization has not produced the musical before this. “It’s perfect for our stage,” said Huyard. “It fits like a glove.” Music director Amy Rau was the first to suggest the show to Huyard. “I fell in love with it,” said Huyard of the show, which will play at the theater, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 8 and 15. The show will be choreographed by Stephanie Morales. The musical adaptation is based on a short story by O. Henry set in the early 1900s. The play focuses on a young husband and wife who have few funds but each wants to buy the other a special Christmas gift. The story contains

As the end of the year approaches, so does sign-up time for the very popular Upward Basketball League. Held each year at Pequea Baptist Church in Gap, the growing league offers fun and exercise in a positive environment for boys and girls in first through eighth grades. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. The program at Pequea Baptist teaches skills, plus there is also a faith-based component to the league, with time for devotionals worked into practice sessions. Last season, the league expanded to include eighth-graders, and participation increased by 55 youngsters, bringing the total number of players to roughly See Upward Basketball pg 3

Guests can enjoy a selection of local food vendors parked on South Queen Street adjacent to the Lancaster County Convention Center. Downtown Lancaster will again be aglow with a 14-story light show at the Griest Building in Penn Square, which will feature changing colors and patterns from 5 p.m. to midnight. For more information, including a list of participants, readers may visit www.extragive.org. Pictured on front: The eighth annual Extraordinary Give, set for Friday, Nov. 22, will give individuals the opportunity to donate to participating organizations of their choice and have their donation stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000 and an additional $50,000 in prizes. Various special events will take place in Lancaster County throughout the day, concluding with the ExtraGive Fest from 6 p.m. to midnight in downtown Lancaster.

The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount aligns with the Community Foundation strategic priority of inclusion and aims to continue increasing the number of unique donors who make a gift during the event. A number of returning features are planned this year, as well. The Extraordinary Give will again offer an opportunity for individuals to leverage their social media networks in support of a nonprofit they care about by becoming a “Fundraising Champion.” Fundraising Champions may activate their personal networks to generate giving for the causes they care about using a personal link. To become a Fundraising Champion, readers may visit www.extragive.org, find their favorite organization, and choose the button that says “Fundraise.” The members of the Give Fleet, a volunteer driving squad open to the public, will promote the event by applying a temporary decal to their personal or business vehicle. Decals will be available through the LCCF. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their decals at any time during the month of November. Any licensed driver is eligible and can register to participate at www.extragive.org/info/ extra-opportunities. On Nov. 22, ExtraGive Hot Spots will be located in Columbia and Elizabethtown, at The Shops at Rockvale, and at other venues in order to highlight locations across Lancaster County. Additional details are forthcoming. The ExtraGive Fest, the Extraordinary Finale, will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 22 at the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. The event, free and open to the public, will offer the community an opportunity to count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give. Designed by Lititz-based event company ATOMIC and local firm Shumaker PDT, ExtraGive Fest will serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, feature local and regional bands, show screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, and

KidCents Regional Grants support nonprofit organizations with programs that serve children in kindergarten through grade 12 and improve quality of life in Rite Aid communities. The grants support three of KidCents’ primary focus areas for improving the health and well-being of children: healthy eating, active living and education. To be considered, programs and projects were required to take place during out-ofschool-time, with priority given to programs that support communities in need. This is the second cycle of KidCents Regional Grants. In the first cycle, The Rite Aid Foundation awarded 180 grants, totaling more than $4 million. Another cycle of KidCents Regional Grants will launch in 2020. To learn more about the program, readers may visit www.riteaid.com/grants.

All aboard for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Christmas With the Conductor parties on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14. Registration forms are available at www.rrmuseumpa.org or at the museum, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours. During the events, the conductor will usher in guests for 45 minutes to an hour of holiday festivities. Each child will receive a souvenir train ticket that the conductor will punch as the child boards one of the museum’s historic railroad cars for a reading of a classic holiday story. Youngsters will be able to create a seasonal take-home craft in Jack Frost Station, and they will receive small bags of special goodies. While visitors are in the museum during the holiday event, they will be invited to send a Santa Gram to the North Pole; visit with Santa Claus and the museum’s mascot, Catcher; and enjoy seasonal decorations and holiday music while surrounded by a world-class collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars. Christmas With the Conductor parties are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Dec. 7 and 14. Parties are recommended for children age 3 and over, who must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. A per-child fee has been set for party attendance, and regular museum admission

will also apply. In addition to its collection of rolling stock, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania includes a working restoration shop, a library and archives, an immersive education center, and a store that offers railroad-related merchandise. A Smithsonian affiliate, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission as part of the

Pennsylvania Trails of History, with the active support of the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Readers may visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628 for more information.

Dennis Keperling, acting as conductor, interacted with visitors to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Christmas With the Conductor parties will be held at the museum on Dec. 7 and 14.

Huyard, referencing the three kings who brought costly gifts to Jesus. “They sing a beautiful medley of ‘Gloria,’” he added. “(The song) gets audience members in the mindset of thinking about the most sacrificial love in human history … God coming down and taking human form and being born in a manger to take away the sins of the world.” Huyard went on to note that the story of the young married couple mirrors the sacrificial love of Christ. “(In the end), they see that the love they have for each other is more important than the gifts, (just as) the magi brought these amazing gifts but they recognized that the most glorious thing in the manger was the love of God,” said Huyard. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Stephen Sondheim and mixes other stories by O. Henry into the script as subplots. “Fans of O. Henry will recognize (the tales),” said Huyard. Some of the cast members are Cavod Theatre veterans, such as Caleb Heckman as Jim, the husband. Others, including Pilisa Mackey, a Lancaster Bible College theater program graduate who plays Della, the wife, are new to Cavod. Other characters include Steve Rau as Willy, a newspaper man and narrator of the show, and Moses Mariscal as Soapy, a man who is homeless by choice and who is trying unsuccessfully to get arrested so he will not be on the streets during Christmas. A cast of characters are played by Kalor Long as the City Him and Hannah Rau as the City Her. Huyard lauded the talents of the pair, who will take turns appearing as a police officer, a French waiter, a posh store owner, and an angry woman from the Bronx. Challenges of staging the play include each cast member playing a character that is larger than life and the complexity of the musical score. “The music is incredibly difficult, and each cast member is carrying a lot,” said Huyard, who added that the “smart, talented” cast members are on track. “They bring a wealth of experience and skills to the show,” said Huyard, adding, “The play highlights the strength of each person in the production team.” While some shows are strictly date-night fodder and others lend themselves to family fare, Huyard insists that at about 90 minutes in length, “The Gifts of the Magi” offers both. “It has beautiful moments of romance, (but) the grandchildren will love this and be laughing,” said Huyard. “The show moves quickly. There’s never a dead moment.” The production also refuses to waver from the truth behind the holiday. “The show starts off with this beautiful song about the true meaning of Christmas,” said

course work in behavioral health organizational leadership at Grand Canyon University, and he is a certified minister, certified alcohol and drug counselor, certified intervention professional, and certified recovery specialist. According to Jakubowski, the idea behind the seminar is to provide information to individuals who have friends or family grappling with addiction. “(We will look at) some unhealthy methods, specifically enabling, that are common responses to someone in addiction,” said Jakubowski. “(For instance), a person in addiction creates a plight about why they have no money, and the friend or loved one gives them money for that reason, and then the money is spent on drugs.” Real help comes in the form of speaking the truth in love, according to Jakubowski. “There has to be a counterintuitive duty of love versus the emotional feelings,” he said. “Sometimes that can be difficult (because) it is totally counterintuitive,” explained Jakubowski, who added that trying to help in ways that enable can only worsen the problem. “The intuitive thing is to grab on tighter. Not only does that not assist people in getting well, it actually keeps people in their addiction longer and with a greater level of sickness,” he said. “It helps the addiction to progress.” He noted that misconceptions about addiction also interfere with overcoming addiction. “It’s such a stigmatic issue (that) some people feel by coming (to a seminar) they will be identified with that issue,” said Jakubowski. “We need to get people to understand that we have to break down those barriers so people can get well. Education removes the stigma.” According to Jakubowski, many families in the United States are experiencing addiction first or second hand. “We are not alone in this,” said Jakubowski, who added that seminars help bring community members together to find solutions. “We find the remedy through our unification as a community,” he shared. “These things are empowering.” Jere Cassel, pastor of Conestoga COB, said that the church has become involved in holding seminars that are based on Scripture. “Ephesians 4 reminds us that we are part of the body of Christ,” said Cassel. “Conestoga COB … has been able to step into an area of ministry that needed strengthening in eastern Lancaster County. Our location and facility seems to be in the right place for addiction awareness and the counseling needs of our area.” Readers who have questions about the seminar may call 717826-1154. bring Wreaths Across America to the area in January, when she began counting all the cemeteries where veterans were buried. “I enlisted friends and we went out to count cemeteries,” said Diem, who had originally estimated there might be 500 graves, far short of the actual 1,450. Next, she met with Gap VFW Post 7418 because she needed to list the organization on her Wreaths Across America application. “They were excited to join,” recalled Diem. “I told them, ‘This is our way of saying thank you,’ and that brought one man to tears.” Her first petition to Wreaths Across America’s home office in Maine was sent in early May. “It was returned because most people only petition for one cemetery,” said Diem, who then explained to the organization’s representatives that she did not feel it was fair to only place wreaths at one cemetery. After obtaining permission from each cemetery to place wreaths there, her application was granted on June 1. Diem set about fundraising to cover the cost of the wreaths, holding a paint party and basket bingo and asking local businesses for donations. She said she is especially thankful to Beiler Insurance Agency and Shivery Funeral Home for their help with her efforts. “Many of the people buried at Bellevue and the other 18 cemeteries don’t have family anymore, so we are their family,” said Diem. “We really believe in our heritage here and that our veterans are important. It is a community event that is for our community to express how much the veterans mean to us.” There is a nominal cost to purchase a wreath to be placed on a veteran’s grave. Those wishing to sponsor a wreath may call Diem at 717-587-1315 by Saturday, Nov. 30.

The congregation of Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC), 40 W. Main St., Strasburg, has a few busy days planned before the year ends, including a vendor show, Breakfast With Santa, a cookie sale, and an open house. The vendor show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the fellowship hall next to the church and the pole barn at the rear of the campus. Coordinator Kay Graybill said that she has space for 25 vendors in the two buildings. Participants are slated to sell crafts, antiques, and direct sales products. These will include personalized lanyards and badges, essential oils, jewelry, Amway products, bath and body care bars and unguents, signs, nail polish strips, repurposed items, and CBD products. “We’ll sell food and lots of Christmas gifts,” said coordinator Kay Graybill, who is also cochairing the Breakfast With Santa. Food offerings at the vendor show will include egg sandwiches, beef barbecue, hot dogs, snacks, and baked goods. Hot coffee will be available as well. Proceeds from the vendor show will be used to replace the tile floor in the fellowship hall and make payments on the new roof. “ We’re trying to make improvements to this facility,” Graybill explained. “We have two spaces that we rent (to the public): the fellowship hall and the pole barn. They’re good for birthday parties,

teen gatherings, receptions, (and more). That’s why we’re working on improvements.” The fourth annual Breakfast With Santa will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7. Children and adults may drop in any time from 7:30 to 10 a.m. to enjoy a meal of pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, milk, hot chocolate, and coffee. A cost has been set for admission, with children age 2 and younger admitted free of charge. Attendees may bring cameras to take photos of their loved ones with Santa Claus. Youngsters may write letters to the jolly old elf, play games, and, for an additional fee, make a craft. Also that day, the cookie sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the church will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of the Strasburg Heritage Society’s Holiday Home Tour. The bakers of the congregation will be busy mixing up their families’ favorite cookies in the days leading up to the sale. Some of the bakers will also get together to make sandtarts from a recipe that has been used by the church for decades. “We make a day of it,” com-

mented cookie sale chair Wanda Albright. “ We usually do 80 dozen.” Proceeds from the cookie sale will be used to support fellowship outreach, Albright said. In previous years, that took the form of purchasing items for gift baskets that were delivered to people in need. The open house will feature displays of various Nativity scenes, ranging from traditional and whimsical to snow globes and paintings. “It’s cool to see all the different kinds,” Graybill remarked. Wesley UMC is also slated to host a Blue Christmas service. A date will be announced later. The congregation will also observe the Hanging of the Greens on Sunday, Dec. 1. The worship service will begin at 8:45 a.m. as usual and will include the singing of seasonal carols and hymns, and church members will decorate the sanctuary together. New members are always welcome, Graybill said. For more information about the activities at Wesley UMC, readers may call the church at 717-687-6392 or visit www.wesleychurch.us.

Announcing a variety of seasonal activities, including a vendor show on Nov. 23 and a cookie sale, Breakfast With Santa, and open house on Dec. 7 at Wesley UMC in Strasburg are (from left) Wanda Albright, Harper Schlee, Kay Graybill, and Mallory Schlee.
