Third Interactive Nativity Planned At The Point “Miracle Of Jesus” Will Include New Stop By Ann Mead Ash
“Our prayer is that as families interact with the citizens of Bethlehem and hear how their lives have been changed by meeting Jesus … they will want to know more about how their own lives can be changed by Jesus,” said Heather Ensslen, volunteer coordinator for “The Miracle of Jesus.” This year, “The Miracle of Jesus: A Christmas Event for Families” will be held at The Point, 700 Main St., Parkesburg, on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 2, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The holiday event, which is in its third year, is organized by Calvary Monument Bible Church in Paradise. The annual live Nativity allows guests to step back in time to biblical Bethlehem, where the residents and
shopkeepers they meet are recalling the night that Jesus was born. Since it has been several years since that special night - and Jesus has gone on to do amazing things, such as bringing a child back to life, feeding thousands with just a few loaves of bread and some fishes, and overcoming His own death - the citizens of Bethlehem have not been able to stop talking about Jesus. Ensslen explained that for 2018, visitors will stop at the magi’s house, where they will meet one of the magi who visited Jesus and learn how to make a cardboard telescope. Guests will also stop at a bakery, where they can knead bread dough and experience the taste of bread dipped in olive oil. Another stop will be the fisherman’s pier, where attendees may try their hand at catching a wooden fish and then have the opportunity to paint their catch. At the spice shop, guests will get to crush their own frankincense and pour it in a See Interactive Nativity pg 4

Staffers and campers have been enjoying the experience offered by Aaron’s Acres, a camp that celebrates the capabilities of children with special needs, for 20 years. The organization will hold a gala in honor of those two decades of service on Dec. 8. By Ann Mead Ash
“We are celebrating our past and looking to the future,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. “We are where we are because of the community and the support (it provides). It has been an amazing journey,
and it’s because people believe in us.” To celebrate its history and its future, the organization will hold its first gala at the Bolger Conference Center in Gordiner Hall at Millersville University, 40 James St., Millersville, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. The event has sold out of all 200 tickets. Maryann Oestreich added that a variety of local crafters and artisans have been invited to display their wares. their businesses, and some just do something really beautiful,” explained Ekdahl. Oestreich said many of the beautified trees are unique. Among the many businesses that will decorate this year will be printers, a builder, a landscaper, window and door sellers, two savings banks, a design and interior decorating business, a therapeutic massage practice, an audiologist, an optometrist, an insurance agency, a personal trainer, and a local publisher. A local dentist who usually decorates the tree with teeth will participate this year, as will a glass blowing shop from St. Peter’s Village. Nonprofit organizations that will take part include Laurel Dance Studio, the Poole Forge Garden Club, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society, and more. Poole Forge features a renovated 18th-century Welsh Ironmaster’s Mansion, so on the evenings of Dec. 1 and 8, organizers have planned bonfires, caroling, and educational sessions about Welsh customs for visitors to enjoy. Along with the picturesque Ironmaster’s Mansion, Poole Forge includes a covered bridge, the babbling Conestoga Creek, and more. Ever since the nonprofit Historic Poole Forge organization was formed to preserve the site, a variety of activities have been held at the location. There is an admission cost to attend Christmas at the Ironmaster’s. Children under age 12 may enter for free. Groups of 15 or more should call 484-7975302 for reservations. Readers who would like to know more about Poole Forge may visit www.historicpooleforge.org.

other club members would suggest that they enlist Wetzel’s talents for a benefit concert under the group’s sponsorship. Jacobs and Wetzel quickly agreed, and the Rotary Club of Paradise will present the Travis Wetzel and Friends Bluegrass Experience on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at Conestoga Valley’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, 500 Mount Sidney Road, Lancaster. Wetzel, who is originally from Dauphin County, is a musician, songwriter, and vocalist who is popular in the greater Philadelphia and central Pennsylvania area, where he has played at the Kutztown, Reading, and Bethlehem folk festivals. Known for playing genres including jazz, swing, Celtic, Native American, country, and classical, Wetzel has been featured as lead fiddler/violinist on a number of recording projects ranging from country to rock. He performed at the Chet Atkins Convention, and he was selected for a lead part in the Johnny Cash musical “Ring of Fire at the Roxy Regional Theatre in Clarksville, Tenn. “(Wetzel tours) with Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys of the Grand Ole Opry, noted Jacobs. “He has been nominated several times for inspirational country musician awards. Wetzel has also toured in Germany. He has worked with a number of charitable organizations, and most recently he has been involved with WEGave, an organization that helps veterans to take part in music therapy activities. For the Rotary concert, Jacobs said that Wetzel will give his Bluegrass Experience concert, which will include songs in the bluegrass and gospel styles, along with some Civil War-era songs. In addition to Jacobs on guitar, others performing with Wetzel will include native Pennsylvanians Bob Sutor on banjo and Ron Greenstein on string bass. For this year, the concert will replace the Rotary Club’s Amish Classic bike ride. The ride was held in partnership with Bird-in-Hand Volunteer Fire Company’s the Run, Ride, and Soar event, which included a 5K race; a half marathon; 12-, 23-, and 62-mile bicycle rides; and a hot air balloon fest. The club hopes to possibly organize the

aware of how much their efforts mean to visitors. “(In 2017 there was) a snowstorm on the first day of ‘The Miracle of Jesus,’” she recalled. “We had 550 people attend the event.” Ensslen added that in the last two years, a total of more than 1,200 people have attended the live Nativity experience. “We have heard from many families how excited they are to include ‘The Miracle of Jesus’ as one of their family’s Christmas traditions,” Ensslen said. Although organizers have made a few changes for the 2018 event, Ensslen noted that the goal remains the same. “We desire
helpers. “We are so thankful for a very large team of faithful volunteers who help to put on ‘The Miracle of Jesus,’” noted Ensslen. “There is a small team (working) year-round … (on) all the details.” During the event, about 150 people help to prepare and run “The Miracle of Jesus,” performing tasks that range from setting up the marketplace booths to helping to park cars, serve refreshments, check in registered families, guide tours of the Nativity, and run the photo booth. According to Ensslen, volunteers are
that people will walk away from their time at ‘The Miracle of Jesus’ knowing that Jesus is with them,” said Ensslen. “All the experiences and activities are designed to remind us that Jesus is with us.” All areas of the event are handicapped-accessible. Ensslen said that to accommodate the large number of visitors expected at the marketplace, organizers are asking those who plan to attend to register for the free event at http://calvarymonument.org/ miracle-of-jesus or by calling the church at 717-442-8161.

Forgiven Worship Center from pg 1 Rafe Smucker, pastor of the Forgiven Worship Center, smiled as he looked around the new church space that was still under construction in early October. “We needed more space (because) we are growing,” said Rafe. Forgiven Worship Center, formerly located in the Intercourse Fire Company, held a grand opening at 11 a.m. on Oct. 14 in the church’s new building at 325 W. Main St., New Holland. Sunday services are held at 11 a.m. each week, and Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. A fellowship meal is held following each service. The nondenominational congregation is a church plant of pastor Sam J. Smucker of Worship Center in Leola. Rafe noted that Sam will preach at the church once each year. Forgiven has its roots in a conversation held between Rafe; his wife, Lisa; and his mother, Anna Smucker, a number of years ago. Nancy Petersheim joined as the fourth member of the group, and Rafe began holding Tuesday night church services in his home. More than four years ago, members began gathering at the Paradise Park for Sunday services. In October 2015, the services moved to the Intercourse Fire Company. The new location is less than 5 miles from the Intercourse fire station. The New Holland location features a sanctuary that will seat 175, a kitchen, two large children’s ministry rooms, and a welcome center that is located to the right after entering by the front door. Rafe praised New Holland Borough staff for being cooperative and easy to work with as the church worked to remodel the building from a used appliance concern to a place of worship. He noted that the church and the borough developed a good relationship, for which he is thankful. Rafe emphasized the welcoming atmosphere of the church, especially in response to the heroin epidemic that has affected the county in recent years. “We want to provide a setting where addicts are welcome,” said Rafe, who added that church members have helped place people in rehab facilities and that he has also buried attendees who succumbed to overdoses. “We are not traditional,” said Rafe. “To someone off the street, (the church is) a hospital,” he said. “One of our elders called this an emergency room for people in crisis.” He added that the church aims to offer the hope of Christ
to all who enter. “We preach the Word and hope to reach (people),” he said. “It’s a tough thing to overcome. I understand.” Rafe noted that the church hopes to attract members from all walks of life. “We’re for anybody and everybody,” he said. “People who have it together can
come and stand with us and understand that we are reaching out to the broken … and they have come and stood with us.” According to Rafe, clients of local ministries that help men overcome addiction, including Revelations of Freedom Ministries in Blue Ball, Restart
Training Center Ministry in Lancaster, and TTC/Potter’s House, with locations in New Holland and Leola, have attended past services. Readers who would like more information or to hear sermons may visit www.forgivenworshipcenter.org or search for “Forgiven Worship Center”

and legs that end near his knees. “When he was born, his parents were told (by experts) that nothing would become of him, said Paskoff. “(But) his parents told him he could do whatever he wanted to. Maynard learned to move without prosthetics, and eventually became a champion wrestler, a CrossFit-certified instructor and gym owner, a competitive MMA/Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter, a world record-setting weightlifter, and a skilled mountaineer. Maynard is also a motivational speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and ESPY award-winning mixed martial arts athlete. Paskoff recalled the genesis of Aaron’s Acres more than 20 years ago, when a group of parents of children with special needs were talking about the need for camping programs for their children. “(I read) this article on Janiece Seldomridge (one
of the founding parents), raising her son Aaron, who has autism, explained Paskoff. “In the middle of the article, there were two sentences (about how the) parents were looking to start a camp. At the time, Paskoff had a counseling and therapy practice for children, but her dream was to run programs for children with special needs. “I met with Janiece and Peggy Rosario, who was with Special Kids Network, a program of United Disability Services, said Paskoff. “We held the (first) oneweek camp (in 1998) at the Jewish Community Center for 11 children ages 5 to 9. Paskoff said that in 1999, the camp ran for two weeks. Camps later opened opened in Berks County and Dauphin County. Since then, the program has expanded. “(Aaron’s Acres) has grown over the years because of
the support and because of what the parents tell us (they want for their children), said Paskoff. “(The parents) wanted schoolyear programs in addition to camp, so now we have a program during the school year. Recently, parents were concerned because their children aged out of Aaron’s Acres at age 21, so in January 2019, Aaron’s Acres Plus for 22to 30-year-olds will be offered. When the Jewish Community Center closed in 2014, the camp moved to the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park, where it is still held. The most recent six-week camp served 220 children from three counties. “Everyone comes to Manheim now, and we provide transportation from Berks and Dauphin, explained Paskoff. The camp can serve any child regardless of medical or behavioral challenges because Paskoff recruits professional staff, including special education teachers and a nurse, for a 1-to1 or 1-to-2 staff-to-child ratio. Looking ahead, Paskoff noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to offer more services for children and adults with special needs. “We are hoping to continue to expand our programs (in the future), said Paskoff. Aaron’s Acres is participating in the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16. “We will be at the Harvest Moon Bagel Company from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (that day), said Paskoff, who added that the shop is creating a signature bagel called the Aaron’s Acres bagel, which will be cinnamon flavored with apple pie cream cheese. From 4:30 to 8 p.m., Aaron’s Acres representatives will be at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince, St., Lancaster. Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its programs may visit www.aaronsacres.org.

More than 100 vendors will fill the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Nov. 17, for the sixth annual Holiday Shopping Fair. The event will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and proceeds will benefit Furever Home Adoption Center and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. “We have a really good mixture of crafters, vendors, and (brick-and-mortar) businesses, said fundraising coordinator Tina Krueger. For the first time in the history of the event, printed and digital photographs with Santa Claus will be available. The shopping fair is pet-friendly, and the photos will be as well. For a small fee, pets and people may pose with Santa from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “You can have (photo cards) ready for Christmas, suggested Pet Pantry executive director Melody Sanders. Another first for the event is the addition of a variety of hot and cold foods for people. The menu is being finalized, but it will represent Lancaster County, Krueger said. “Come hungry, invited Furever Home executive director MJ Meinzer. The first 100 adult attendees will receive goodie bags. While
admission to the shopping fair is free of charge, attendees are asked to bring items to donate to the two organizations. The wish list includes bleach, toilet paper, paper towels, liquid or powder kitten formula, canned kitten food, dry cat food, and dry dog food. “This is the first time we’re actually having a shortage of dog food, Sanders remarked. The Pet Pantry routinely distributes pet food to more than 200 households from four locations in Lancaster and Chester counties. To encourage contributions, people who donate items at the shopping fair will be rewarded with entries in a prize drawing. The hosting organizations will also benefit in another way at the event. A company evaluating the user-friendliness of packaging will give a donation to Furever Home and Pet Pantry for each adult age 50 or older who takes a dexterity test. The proceeds from the shopping fair will be shared between the two organizations, which have begun to work together to meet the needs of cats in Lancaster County. Approximately 110 felines are being cared for by the combined network of foster homes. Piano Students Perform On Outdoor Instruments CASA Advocates Take Pledge For a number of years, Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program has placed pianos in various locations throughout downtown Lancaster during the warmer months. This summer, there were 12 brightly colored pianos decorated by local artists stationed throughout the city. Each piano, sponsored by local businesses or nonprofits, was placed in the city in mid-May and removed in the fall. A local piano class of eight adult musicians, many of whom are retired, visited the pianos on two occassions over the summer to test out their performance skills. With about two years of lessons under their belts, the group members played a few tunes solo or in tandem at one
of the pianos before moving on to the next piano. The songs ranged from Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to a theme from one of Mozart’s sonatas. The group was led by teacher Linda Rasmuson, who provides individual lessons to children and adults and teaches adult group piano lessons from beginning to advanced levels. The group members mostly performed for their own amazement and amusement, but their enjoyed the opportunity to play for others when they had an audience. The piano class members are looking forward to performing on the Keys for the City pianos again next year. In the meantime, they plan to offer
some impromptu performances on the permanent piano that Keys for the City has placed in the food court at Park City Mall.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lancaster County swore in 19 new volunteer advocates at a ceremony held on Sept. 19. Family and friends gathered at the Emerald Foundation, 2120 Oregon Pike, to watch Judge Thomas B. Sponaugle administer the CASA oath of office. The newly appointed advocates will join other community members in advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. CASA volunteers are asked to regularly meet with the child for whom they advocate and are authorized to interview people in the child’s life such as social workers, attorneys and teachers. They attend court hearings with the child and report their findings to the judge. The new advocates are Cheryll Alleman, Peach Bottom; Daphne Gulick, Elizabethtown; Sam Hershey, Columbia; Emily Hertzler, Akron; Rick Kerper,
Patrice Beittel (far left) held the music while Jack Encho (left, at piano keyboard) and Bernie Shire (right, at piano keyboard) performed a tune and Mary Kay Mowrer (back, left) and Penny Pritchett (back, right) listened. The musicians, who are members of a group piano class, performed on pianos stationed throughout the city of Lancaster through Music for Everyone’s Keys for the City program.

Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) approved funding to five Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs on Sept. 25. These five programs are reaching families and their children who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants totaled $74,375. Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County was awarded $25,000 to expand a partnership between Domestic Violence Services and COBYS that seeks to improve the mental health of children fleeing domestic violence through the use of an evidence-based model. The Seeking Safety program utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy to explore issues such as trauma,

literacy, nutrition, and child development are a few of the important topics covered during the two five-week sessions. With a focus on non-traditional library users, as well as new and young parents, the workshops foster relationships between community resource providers and those who need them most. Compass Mark received a grant in the amount of $10,000 to expand the Family Services Advocate program that identifies the unique needs and rights of children with incarcerated parents at Lancaster County Prison. Each child receives a needs assessment, case management, and relationship support, along with evaluations before and after receiving services. The program seeks to improve resiliency, connect children and caregivers to community resources, and help mitigate the impact of childhood trauma. LOHF’s grants aim to elevate children’s mental health by supporting local programs that target
one or more of the following: improving the delivery of children’s behavioral health care services; enhancing the capacity of parents, families, and caregivers through trainings and support; and improving the capacity of providers to support and treat children. Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for children and youths from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available in 2019. Online applications are now available and must be submitted online by Friday, March 1, 2019. Tax-exempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org/grants. Readers may also contact Anna Brendle at 717-397-8722 or akennedy@lohfoundation.org for more information.

addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The program expansion’s aim is to increase family competency about children’s mental health by aligning the curriculum between parent and child programs and focusing on processing the trauma of experiencing and witnessing domestic violence. Aaron’s Acres received $11,575 to support Aaron’s Acres Plus, a new program to meet the needs of young adults ages 21 to 26 who have developmental disabilities. The new therapeutic program will focus on socialization and communication for individuals once they have graduated from high school. This program will provide opportunities for individuals to interact with one another and engage in meaningful activities in a community setting. Lancaster Health Center received $15,000 for the Lancaster County Reach Out and Read initiative, which seeks to improve early literacy skills and make early literacy an integral part of pediatric checkups in early childhood. The initiative aims to promote language development in the first five years of life, as well as parent-child shared reading. Lancaster Public Library was awarded $12,800 to connect children and their families to the library and to offer valuable information from community professionals through the Play, Learn, and Grow Series. Municipal law enforcement agencies throughout southcentral Pennsylvania have joined the Pennsylvania State Police and more than 200 municipal agencies to conduct the first targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Nov. 25. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the first wave aims to reduce the number of aggressive drivingrelated crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave focuses on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely or practicing other aggressive actions will also be cited. Marietta, Cynthia McComsey’s East Market Street abode boasts quite an expansive history. Stone mason Joseph Hopkins built the two-story log cabin between 1810 and 1815 after having purchased the plot of land from Andrew and Esther Hershey. The Hersheys had bought the plot in 1804 from none other than David Cook, the founder of Marietta’s east section, known as New Haven. Hopkins covered the cabin with pebbledash stucco before selling it to grocer Samuel Hipple, who split the property into two rental units. Today, utilizing furniture that provides maximal storage space is McComsey’s key for making the most of the small space. The home’s interior features antique furnishings, redware and yellowware, and a collection of original pieces of artwork, amidst the low ceilings and wide-plank flooring. Her house will be one of the eight private homes appearing on the 53rd annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes, set to take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Presented by Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), the selfguided tour will feature local homes as well as historic buildings including St. John’s Episcopal Church, Union Meeting House, Old Town Hall, Susquehanna Waldorf School, First National Bank, the Marietta Community House, and Pioneer Fire Company. According to tour chairperson Darlene Pruett, it is the longest continually running holiday home tour in Lancaster County. Tickets may be purchased in advance for a discount at www.mariettarestoration.org or at any of the locations listed on the website or by calling 717-4264048 by Thursday, Nov. 29. Tickets may be purchased in Marietta on the day of the event at the Donegal Intermediate School parking lot, 1177 River Road, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as at Old Town Hall Museum, North Waterford and Walnut streets, and First National Bank, 100 E. Market St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Separate prices have been set for tickets purchased in advance and those

Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center of Lancaster County has announced that it has a new name: Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The organization that is called Schreiber today has been around since 1936. In those 82 years, it has gone by several different names, adopting its most recent name, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center of Lancaster County, in 1994. In the nearly 25 years since, Schreiber has experienced many changes and a lot of growth. The center now sees more children than ever and sees children with a wider array of diagnoses. The center underwent a major expansion in 2006, and it has added new services, including aquatic therapy and the Circle of Friends Academy day care center. The organization’s new mission statement reads: “We provide everything needed for all of life’s challenges, so that families and children can reach their dreams and vision. We see every child’s unique capabilities and help them achieve their fullest potential.” That new mission statement guided the conversations about finding a new name to reflect the breadth of services Schreiber provides. After numerous meetings, a stakeholder survey, and a final review by the board, the center made the switch to the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The center also adopted a new logo. Schreiber has also announced that donations it receives during the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 16, will go directly to the therapy services that help thousands of children each year. The organization is also asking supporters who are able to make a second donation to Schreiber to do so, and these additional monies will go to the Schreiber Endowment Fund. The endowment started with a $100,000 gift in 2014, and it is now approaching $750,000. A goal has been set to reach $1 million by next year, which will be a major milestone in
