SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LVII • NO 48

Enriching The Journey BY ANN MEAD ASH

ike Sensenig joined the board of the Pequea Valley Education Foundation (PVEF) to contribute to the local community. “We wanted to give back somewhere, and this seemed like a good place to do it,” said Sensenig. But as a Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) Class of 1975 alumnus, Sensenig has special ties to the mission of the organization. “I remember going on the (eighthgrade) Williamsburg trip,” said Sensenig, referencing a field trip that PVEF helps fund through scholarships. “That really touches the community because graduates remember going. I was excited to hear they continue to do that (trip).” “It’s our goal to enrich the educational experiences for all kids who come to Pequea Valley,” said Amy Koberstein, PVHS assistant principal and member of the PVEF board. The organization, which formed in 2013, has a nine-member board, made up of community members

M

and active Pequea Valley School District staff members. “We support students who might not be in a position financially to participate in things that might be viewed as extra,” Koberstein said of PVEF. Koberstein reported that in the last year, PVEF ran two grant cycles with the goal of distributing $25,000. One of the grants went to Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) to support the annual manufacturing week, which introduces learners to the world of manufacturing, including demonstrations in how to lay flooring and a PVC pipe challenge activity. “Kids learned to wire an outlet and frame a wall,” shared Koberstein, who noted that the board plans to continue to support the activity each year. “We also awarded (a grant for) Orbas, (which are) a tech device that allows kids to write their own music.” Koberstein noted that the scholarships for the Williamsburg trip were doubled this year so that ninth-grade students, whose trip was canceled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, could participate. From New Jersey To Florida To New Holland

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.

Andrew Dinardo (he prefers Drew) began his journey to New Holland many years ago in Gibbstown, N.J., where he grew up about 20 minutes from Philadelphia. Along the way, he served at churches in Mount Holly, N.J.; Philadelphia; and Coral Springs, Fla. In June, Drew; his wife, Kristie; and his youngest of four daughters, Andreya, moved to New Holland when he became the new pastor at St. Stephen Reformed Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland. After 17 years in Florida, Drew may find the climate in Pennsylvania colder, but he has already commented on the warmth of the people. “I couldn’t tell you the names of my neighbors in Florida,” he said. “You didn’t talk to people. Here … everybody has just been so kind, friendly, polite. It’s different, but I love it.”

Drew credits Kristie with bringing him to Christ in January of 1988. The pair had been to the movies the December prior, and Kristie invited him to church. “I got into a car accident, and I had to move home (with my parents),” recalled Drew, “So I went to church with her on Sunday, and she would tell me about Jesus.” In September of 1989, he began attending Philadelphia College of Bible. He graduated in 1991 and began working as a youth pastor, but he had already felt a calling to preach. He became the youth director at First Baptist Church in Mount Holly, earning a Master of Science in Christian counseling so he could better serve the teenagers. In 1999, Drew converted to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and began interning at Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, where he served as an assistant for three years. He served under pastor Rick Phillips in Philadelphia and later at First Presbyterian Church of Coral Springs, where he became senior pastor in 2008. He received his Master of Divinity in 2007, and he has also earned his doctorate from the Ligonier Academy of Biblical and Theological Studies. Drew said he felt an immediate connection with the St. Stephen search committee. He noted that strengths of the church ministry include a desire for fellowship and to learn the Word. “I am particularly impressed with the number of people who pray and are willing to pray and who are

“ We don’t have a lot of operating costs,” said Koberstein of the PVEF board. “People who give to our foundation should know every dollar ends up back in the hands of Pequea Valley facilitators benefiting Pequea Valley learners.” “As a community member, that was important to me,” noted Sensenig. Participating in the Extraordinary Give is a main source of funding for PVEF. For 2021, the organization will take part in The Factory Block Party, which will be held outside at The Factory, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Friday, Nov. 19, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sensenig hopes leaders

of area businesses will come out to the party. “This community has been blessed. My goal is to raise awareness of the foundation in the business community,” he said. The Extraordinary Give is hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, known as the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. In 2020, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more tan 7.8 million shoeboxes in the United States to be sent to local partners around the world. The shoeboxes, which are filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and small toys, are sent to children in areas affected by natural disasters, famine, disease, war, or poverty. Since 2012, Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, has been a drop-off center for boxes collected by individuals, families, churches, and other local groups. “We collect 3,600 and 4,000 as an average,” said Petra representative Andrea Kauffman, who noted that Marilyn Coles oversees the Operation Christmas Child drop-off center at Petra and takes boxes to Baltimore to be processed after they are collected. “(Coles) will take a group of about 10 (volunteers) to Baltimore to do processing,” explained Kauffman. Information about how to pack a shoebox may be found at www.samaritanspurse.org.

“There’s a whole lot of resources (there),” said Petra representative Jenny Sensenig. Actual shoeboxes or plastic boxes with snap-on lids may be used. Kauffman noted there are some specific items that should not be included in shoeboxes. “No liquids, no toothpaste, no candy, no toy weapons,” she stated. “What we say is to really think through what people will use.” Kauffman recommended a T-shirt, a soccer ball and pump, flashlights and head lamps with batteries, and string bags. Sensenig noted people should think broadly when participating in the program. “When you pack the shoebox, you want to have in mind that you’re packing something special for the child that receives the box, but most of the time they will be distributing (items), so think outside of the one child because you are impacting that whole family.” Children who receive shoe-

boxes may choose to enroll in The Greatest Journey, a 12lesson discipleship program that gives ministry partners a chance to develop long-term relationships with families and to share the love of Christ. There is a cost per box to ship gifts to a child. Boxes may be dropped off at designated locations from through Monday, Nov. 22. Drop-off center hours at Petra will be noon to 3 p.m. on Wednes-

day, Nov. 17; 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18; noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20; 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21; and 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Nov. 22. Helpers Needed To Wrap Presents Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS), the UDS gift wrap booth will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The booth will operate daily in the former Sears wing of Park City Center from Black

Friday, Nov. 26, through Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24. Booth hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. More than 250 volunteers from the community are needed to cover all available shifts. A shift is typically four hours. Volunteers must be age 14 and

older and must follow COVID protocols, including wearing a mask, social distancing, and using hand sanitizer. To learn more or to sign up for a shift, contact Radha Davé at 717-203-0029 or radhad@udservices.org. Proceeds from the gift wrap booth will benefit UDS, serving people with disabilities.

For instance, Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Tenfold - an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020 - offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. This platform, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is celebrating its 10th year in 2021. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews.

Each participating nonprofit has its own profile on the ExtraGive website, and some include a nondiscriminatory policy, which is a new feature. “This is a nice addition because it helps people know that their values are reflected in the organization to which they’re donating,” stated Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. From 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 19, LCCF will host the ExtraGive Fest in Penn Square as it counts down the final hours of the event. Live music will be provided by DJ Salinger; Sir Dominique Jordan, The Prolific One; Adrian Garcia; and Mama Tried. There will be a local beer garden from Springhouse Brewing Company as well as local food pop-ups from East King Street businesses, such as Tellus360, Blazin’ J’s, and New Holland Coffee Co. All are welcome to attend. Unvaccinated guests will be encouraged to wear masks. “The day is all about giving - giving back to the nonprofits that serve our county,” said Cutler.

With the non-league victory, the Braves finished the year 2-8. Werner was asked what the victory meant to the program in terms of wrapping up the season with a W. “That win for our program is huge going into next year,” he replied. “I’m returning 17 or 18 kids from this team next year.” Werner did point out that the game was a make-up game from what was originally scheduled as the season opener. “This game was the biggest margin of victory Pequea Val-

When Thursday night came, they were firing on all cylinders.”

Heather said that the final building John was working on is still in his workshop. “The last thing he made was a pavilion that he didn’t finish,” she said. “It had a fireplace and chimney that worked.” John and Steve’s brother Lloyd Diener felt that it would be nice if the village could be preserved and shared at Stone Gables Estate, and by early October, a representative of the organization had visited the Diener home. “It’s unbelievable,” said David Abel, known for moving and preserving the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate. “(The Diener Village will be) part of the walking tour of Christmas Village at the Stone Gables Estate,” he said, adding that the tiny buildings are located in the original corn crib of the Star Barn. “They are all lit up and ready for Christmas.” The grand opening of the Christmas Village will be Friday, Nov. 26, and Saturday,

“He started the Mascot Mill in 2012, and he finished in 2013,” said Steve Diener, John’s brother, who explained that John’s first passion was to re-create the house, the barn, and the mill from Mascot, a small village located southeast of Leola. The trio was especially recognizable because of the bright yellow barn with green trim. “Everything was handmade down to the windows,” shared Steve. “(John) cut the wood shingles by hand.” Steve added that the insides of the houses are “amazing” as well. “He had wallpaper on the walls and pictures,” said Steve, who explained that John prepared the framework and interior of the buildings in his shop. John’s wife, Heather, added that her husband used a cart to wheel them outside, where Steve said the stone was laid. Steve also noted that the houses were set on strong foundations, making it easy to move them to their new location in Elizabethtown. Heather recalled her husband cutting photos from magazines to make the pictures inside the buildings and using a photo of Nelson Coblentz of Gospel Express Evangelistic Team Ministry Inc. in one of them. Heather noted that it took John about a year to finish each building and that she often helped him with the village and also with birdhouses and feeders they would create to enter in the New Holland Fair competitions. One building in the group familiar to Pequea Valley-area residents is a replica of the Zimmerman store in Intercourse. Steve noted that 20,000 bricks were used to cre-

Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25. Last year, the 5K race was run with staggered start times that took place every 20 minutes. Chip timing was used to record the runners start and finish times. To accommodate the multiple 5K start times, the 1-mile children’s run was not held. Bruce Gregory, camp director, said organizers wanted to hold a live Turkey Bowl in 2020 rather than a virtual event. “Last year we had 223 total participants and we had 197 finishers in the 5K race,” he stated. “Many (participants) commented that they appreciated being able to do a race in person instead of vir-

Second Wind Race Timing, our chip timing company, helped us with a modified version so we could do the race in person.” The 5K race this year will again take runners through the camp and around the lake. The course includes paved, gravel and grassy paths. While the course is primarily level, there are a few hills for runners to tackle. The 1-mile children’s fun run for youths age 12 and under will take place on the main grounds of the camp. Parents may run alongside their children at no charge. in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run will begin at 9:10 a.m., followed by the 5K race at 9:40 a.m. All children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups. To register, visit www.tel haicamp.org/events/turkey -bowl-run. Online registration will end on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Participants may also print a registration form from the website and mail it to the camp, along with the registration fee. As in previous years, all participants at the Turkey Bowl will be cheered on by the Tel Hai turkey mascot. “This is the 30th year for the race and we are looking forward to another great year,” Gregory stated. The Thanksgiving Day run was started in 1992 by former camp program director Buzz Tyson, who is now director of the Lighthouse Youth Center in Oxford. The Turkey Bowl is sponsored by local businesses, which are listed at the event website. Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp and Retreat, a nonprofit Christian camp that is a member of the Christian Camping and Conference Association. The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or contact Gregory at 610-273-3969 or bruce@telhaicamp.org. More information is also available at www.facebook.com/ TelHaiCampRetreat.
