Working within COVID-19 restrictions, Pequea Baptist Church plans to hold Upward Basketball for youths at the church this fall and winter.
Pequea Baptist Youth Programs Still Looking “Upward” Basketball Registration Open
ammy Shondelmyer, director of Next Generation Ministries at Pequea Baptist Church, 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, wanted to make sure area children had the opportunity to take part in Upward Basketball during the fall and winter of 2020-21. Working together with Doug Kauffman, children’s outreach director, and other volunteers, Shondelmyer has devised a plan for the program that meets COVID-19 restrictions. “It will be a challenge,” said Shondelmyer. “There are so many parts of this to think through.” Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based
competition. First- and secondgrade boys and girls play together on coed teams. Older students have separate teams for boys and girls. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, and each team will be assigned one evening a week to practice. A number of changes have been made to meet COVID-19 restrictions. “We have divided the year into two parts,” said Shondelmyer. “We are (running the program) for 10 weeks, so each (group) will play five weeks,” she explained. Boys in grades five through eight and girls in grades six through eight, will play games on Saturdays from Jan. 9 through Feb. 6. Boys in grades one through four and girls in grades one through five, will play Saturdays from Feb. 13 to March 13. Players will be required to wear masks

component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. Registration for the program opened on Oct. 15 and will end Thursday, Dec. 10. Registration fees will be reduced this year, and registration will be limited to 150 players. Evaluation nights will be held on Monday, Nov. 30; Tuesday, Dec. 1; Monday, Dec. 7; and Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. each night. During the evaluation nights, the students will be sized for a jersey and asked to perform drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for

when not playing, and spectators, which will be limited to two per player, will be requested to wear masks in the building. In addition, a half hour buffer has been added between games in order to clear out the building. During games, bagged snacks and bottled beverages will be handed out for participants and spectators to consume outside the building. An additional building will be open for families that have to remain at the church for multiple games. Registration for the older age group is available at https:// registration.upward.org/UPW71071. In a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler.

SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) is a free onehour after-school music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through 12 SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the program benefits the students in several ways. “Music is not only fun but research underscores it as one of the finest disciplines to help a child succeed,” she said. When COVID-19 restrictions were put in place in March, SWAN classes ended, and spring concerts were canceled. “The music stopped,” said Vuolo, adding that lessons can only resume when it is deemed safe for teachers to return. Hoping to provide a musical outlet for students until in-person classes could be held, SWAN quickly created instructional videos that were posted on YouTube and provided to SDoL for students to access, but Vuolo reported SWAN was not

As SWAN program director, Brooke Beazley monitors each private Zoom lesson. “I see how beneficial the Zoom lessons have been,” said Beazley. “Every student is making School District of Lancaster students take part in virtual music lessons provided by SWAN, a nonprofit organization serving children affected by parental incarceration. Hybrid Homeschooling Out Of A Mother’s Love Grows Firm Foundations Academy
Several years ago, when Sarah Northrup was homeschooling her children, she discovered her daughter had dyslexia. “(It was) impossible to find help and support, recalled Northrup. “I felt I was very isolated. Northrup, who already had a degree in elementary and special education, responded by turning to the National Institute of Learning Development at Virginia University in Virginia Beach, Va., where she received her certification as an education therapist. She began tutoring other home-
to 3:15 p.m. Currently, the school serves a total of more than 50 students in grades one through 10, with the goal of adding grades 11 and 12 in the next few years. “Our goal is for students in 11th and 12th grades to have partnerships to take classes at Lancaster Bible College or to have internships so they can go out to the community to get job training, Northrup noted. “We offer a full scope of classes, said Northrup, who is head of school for the academy. She listed English, math science, history, art, music, and Bible, among the classes, noting that she tries to offer
an eclectic mix taught according to classical educational philosophy with a biblical worldview. “Our high school kids are doing leadership classes, she noted. “They are learning about character development and then doing service projects out in the community every month. As a hybrid, the academy represents a partnership between parents and teachers. “It’s teacher directed and parent supported, explained Northrup. “The teachers supply all the content and lesson plans for parents. Northrup explained that a reading assignment taught in school

In fall of 2019, Northrup opened Firm Foundations Academy, a hybrid homeschooling program, which meets at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m.

With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was
going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80

to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org /info/downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an in-person countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say
why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/extra givecast. “Even though we can’t be together, we want to build the ExtraGive CAST together,” Spangler remarked. “We want folks to really feel like they’re prime players in the day. It’s their excitement and enthusiasm that has made the ExtraGive as successful as it has been over the years in Lancaster County.” For more information about the ExtraGive, readers may contact Spangler at aspangler@lancfound.org or 717-397-1629, ext. 113.

The Pequea Valley football team wrapped up its 2020 campaign with a 1-6 mark. It was a year that included a solid 14-0 victory at Northern Lebanon on Oct. 23 and a thrilling yet heartbreaking 29-28 overtime loss to Annville-Cleona the following week. The Braves’ regular-season finale was a nonleague game at Pine Grove on Nov. 6. “We were in a scramble to find an opponent for a seventh game,” explained head coach Jeffrey Werner. “Pine Grove came forward right away.” The Cardinals came away with a 43-6 victory as a trio of seniors accounted for a number of big plays on offense. Quarterback Josh Leninger completed 14 of 27 passes for 228 yards, throwing for three touchdowns. He connected with fellow seniors Brody Robinson and Shea Morgan as well as junior Dalton Geesey on scoring passes. Morgan
finished with 115 yards receiving. He also kicked the PATs, going 5 for 5, while Robinson scored on a twopoint conversion on Pine Grove’s first touchdown. “They outsized us significantly,” said Werner. “Also, I was missing two starters on defense going into that game. That had an impact on our defense as we put kids into positions they weren’t used to playing. “Nate Miller, who’s 5-foot11, 255 pounds, was a big loss,” continued the coach. “Orlando Stoltzfus was also unavailable.” Pequea senior quarterback Nate Fisher completed three passes for 68 yards. Dominic Wallace caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fisher in the fourth quarter. “Dominic Wallace had some key catches for us this year,” Werner said. Werner said that he’s looking forward to the offensive line unit returning

“The biggest position to fill will be running back, but we have a few underclassmen to look at. “We will have a nice nucleus on offense, but losing some valuable kids on defense,” added the coach. Werner was asked about the way Pequea came out and played against AnnvilleCleona the week after the Braves snapped their losing streak. “That game was one for the ages,” he said of the overtime affair that was decided by A-C making a two-point conversion to edge the Braves by one point. “ We were down by eight. We fought and came back; we tied it on a safety. They were lucky enough to make the two-point conversion. “We thought we could have won that game,” continued the coach. “The players knew they played hard. It was a game they’ll remember and take into next season.”

next year, building on this year’s experience. “We had over 1,000 yards rushing this year,” he pointed out. “We are going to start with a solid offensive line. Four of my five offensive linemen lettered. They are coming back.” Peyton Temple, who had one completion in the Pine Grove game, is slated for the QB position next year, leading the offense as a junior in 2021. “He’s a very intelligent and athletic kid,” commented the coach. Aside from Wallace, who’ll be a senior next year, other players filling skill positions include John Carter and Zach Otstot, who is 5-11, 170. “John Carter is very athletic and very fast,” said Werner. “Zach Otstot will be a junior. He played well in the limited time he got this year. “On offense we’ll have several experienced underclassmen coming back,” he added.
Sarah Poague (left), Ric Zimmerman (middle), and Kat Prickett will present a concert titled “Christmas in Perfect Harmony” in November and December.
