Looking at the big picture and answering the big questions The Factory plans for the next five years BY ANN MEAD ASH

Sensenig noted that local restaurants will extend hours that evening for the event. On Dec. 2, a number of events are planned at Kitchen Kettle Village, including the Brave Sounds singers at 10 a.m., visits with Santa beginning at 11 a.m., and s’mores making and activities for children beginning at 11 a.m. Activities on Dec. 2 will also include strolling carolers at Smucker Village at 9:30 a.m., the Old Country Store at 10:15 a.m., and the Old Candle Barn at 11 a.m.

“We know why we exist and how to do it,” said Adam Nagle, executive director of The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “(But) what do we want to see done (in the future)? What is the clear vision?” The Factory Ministries, which provides resources for children, youths, and adults from the Together Community Center, formerly the Paradise Elementary School, underwent a reassessment four years ago when Nagle came on board. “In the fall of 2019, the board and the executive team worked through our mission and our values to clarify our mission,” said Nagle. “We are all about empowerment of people, connecting them to resources, and building community by walking with those who are underresourced.” Now, the ministry is looking ahead five years beginning with a listening phase that has already included meetings with The Factory staff members and focus groups including donors, volunteers,

o I like Christmas?” asked Carl Kosko, proprietor of the Inn and Spa at Intercourse Village. In answer to the rhetorical question, Kosko added, “My shed is full of Christmas. Christmas lights are everywhere, and wreaths are hung.” Like fellow members of the Village of Intercourse Merchants Association (IMA), Kosko is preparing for the holiday season. This year, IMA is

planning the 26th annual Intercourse Village Holiday Celebration for Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2. Both traditional activities, such as the Shepherds Walk, and new events, including a Christmas Cookie Tour, are planned over the two-day period. According to Mike Sensenig, one of the organizers of the event, activities on Dec. 1 will focus on Center Street with local Boy Scouts lining the street with luminarias. “That’s a fundraiser for the Intercourse Library,” said

Sensenig, who noted that local businesses are sponsoring the luminarias. At 6 p.m., activities will kick off at the library at 31 Center St., Intercourse. “Santa will come on a fire truck,” said Sensenig, adding that other fire trucks will also be on display and that the Gordonville Fire and Ambulance ladder truck will offer rides. The tree lighting will be held at the library immediately following Santa’s arrival, and a Pequea Valley High School choral group will sing carols. Light refreshments will be served, and

At 1 p.m., the first IMA Lodging Christmas Cookie Tour, which will benefit The Factory Ministries, will begin. The tour is the brainchild of Kosko, who had heard of a similar event as part of his association with a bed-and-breakfast group. Four local properties are joining in this year taking part. The Inn at Kitchen Kettle, the AmishView Inn and Suites, and the Best Western, and Kosko’s Inn and Spa will offer a view into the holiday décor at each stop, along with cookies to taste. “There’s a contest where you vote for your favorite cookie,” said Sensenig, who added that the winning cookie will then be featured at Stoltzfus Meats and Deli in January. “(The cookie tour) has a lot of potential to be a lot of fun,” said Sensenig. Tickets are necessary to take part in the tour. Readers who wish to obtain tickets may search for “Intercourse Merchants Association Christmas Cookie Tour” on Eventbrite or visit https://tinyurl.com/bdf2ht7p. The Shepherds Walk, which returned last year, will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Ten Thousand Villages in Kitchen Kettle Village. Local children

“The (Christmas Light) Trail is the main event, and that’s where most of the lights are,” said John Styer, organizer of Christmas in the Park, a Terre Hill Days celebration. “Admission is free, and parking is free,” added Styer. “For the Christmas Light Trail there is a nominal fee.” Styer noted that members of the Terre Hill Days committee are “really grateful for all the businesses that stepped up to offset our costs.” “(Our sponsors) keep it an affordable family event for the community,” said Styer. This year’s Christmas in the Park event will run two consecutive weekends. The festivities, which will include food, live music performances, and live ice carving, will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. each night. The event will be held on Fridays, Dec. 1 and 8; Saturdays, Dec. 2 and 9; and Sundays, Dec. 3 and 10, in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill. Styer pointed out that decorating the the Christmas Light Trail began in October. This year’s display will feature 50,000 lights double the number that decorated last year’s trail. This

year’s trail will offer 25 new handmade light displays and two new special scenes. “One is an ice castle theme, and the other is Christmas in outer space,” said Styer, who added that an interactive walkthrough Nativity display will

The Factory Ministries from pg 1 community members, business owners, and local pastors. “We are listening and talking through needs they see in the community and what do they understand The Factory to be,” said Nagle, who noted that the next step is to go wider in the process. “ We would love to hear from the community,” said Nagle. “We want a broad response.” Nagle noted that questions would center on needs, issues area residents are facing, and more. He added that the ministry ventures beyond the bounds of the Pequea Valley School District, reaching into the Strasburg area. Ellie Green, executive assistant with The Factory, said she wants area residents to feel invited to complete the survey, which will be available online. “Questions will be multiple choice,” she said, noting that the final question will require a longer answer, but that survey takers need not complete each question to

move forward. “Questions will be about what The Factory does and the impact it has, along with the three most urgent needs the ministry should tackle in the (next) five years.” Readers may access the survey at https://tinyurl.com/y88mdh35. The survey may also be found by searching for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook. The results of the surveys and focus groups will help the team to craft a statement that describes where the organization is going and what it will look like when it gets there. Green noted that major community needs, emerging needs, and biggest challenges are among the issues the organization hopes to identify. Both Nagle and Green said that they hope to have results of the work available for area residents early next year. “The goal is to have a statement by Leap

D a y , T h u r s d a y , F e b. 2 9 , 2024,” said Nagle. “We will share that with everyone who participated to let them know what their input has led to.” Nagle noted that The Factory currently offers educational assistance through the kindergarten readiness program and the Braves Learning Center. “That’s a key part of helping people thrive and overcome

poverty,” said Nagle, who added that The Factory Youth Center continues to support students as they move to adulthood and that adult advocates and a food pantry are offered. Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory Ministries, which is located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may visit www.the factoryministries.com or call 717-687-9594.

Elvis impersonator Jeff Krick Jr. will perform as will Perfect Harmony and the Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble. Jazz fans may enjoy hearing the Cats Pajamas and Stephanie Grace will offer country

sounds to visitors. In addition, groups of carolers, including carolers from Cavod, will sing each night. The Terre Hill Days food pavilion will be open for the event, but a number of other vendors will be available, including Castanedas Mexican, Henhouse Grilling, and vendors offering handmade soft pretzels and french fries. “We have a fun specialty hot chocolate stand with seasonal flavors,” said Styer. Children’s crafts and activities will be held in the park this year, and Santa will be available for visits. Styer noted that off-site parking with a shuttle service will be provided from 400 Reading Road, East Earl. Handicapped-accessible parking will be available at the Terre Hill Community

WFCS welcomes guest pastors October was observed as Pastor Appreciation Month and recently, more than 32 pastors and youth and children’s ministry leaders from local churches enjoyed a morning at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS), a private Christian school in Atglen. After enjoying a light breakfast, the guests attended the school’s chapel program, which included songs, scripture readings and a message. There were also special performances from the student body,

including the worship team, instrumental ensemble; and presentations by the kindergarten, third-grade and middle school boys’ and girls’ Bible classes. The visitors were then invited to share soft pretzels and lemonade with students from their congregation. WFCS, 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, serves children in preschool through 10th grade in the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Kennett Square, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley and Solanco school districts.
