we are so thankful for our readers and the local businesses and organizations that help to make our communities thrive Journey To Bethlehem Soldiers On BY ANN MEAD ASH

Last year, organizers of Journey to Bethlehem, an annual fundraiser for Woodcrest Retreat, changed the script a little by having participants meet up with a Roman guard on the journey. This year, a few more changes are planned. Some of those changes are related to COVID-19 restrictions, but others are designed to enhance the experience for those who attend. Journey to Bethlehem differs from other live Nativity presentations because participants are given the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph to

t had been many years since the Paradise PTO had held a holiday boutique for students to shop for their family members. In 2019, PTO members decided to hold a boutique fundraiser in the school library during recess. “Last year was insanity,” recalled Christy Fieldsa, one of the organizers of the event. “It was all hands-on deck.”

I

With last years’ experience in the past and with COVID-19 restrictions in mind, Fieldsa has joined forces with fellow PTO member Katie Knaub and Factory Ministries staff members Karla Neff and Lauren Petersheim to hold the 2020 boutique in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Shopping appointments will be assigned during the following days and times: Monday, Nov. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m.; Tuesday,

Dec. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 5 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 5 p.m.; and Friday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 8 p.m. Paradise Elementary students will receive an invitation through the school. Half of the invitation explains how the boutique will work, and the other half provides a place for a student to complete a shopping list with the name of the gift recipient and the amount of money the student may spend

on that person. The invitation also contains a QR code and shopper sign-up link so that families can make an appointment to shop. Students from two families will shop during each 20-minute appointment. Extended families may sign up together and those with immunodeficiencies may make special arrangements. Masks will be required, as will hand washing or sanitizing prior to shopping. A wrapping station

registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.

Goodman Chiropractic has opened at 3440 Rothsville Road, Ephrata, after a fire destroyed its previous New Holland location in 2019. After working with the founder of an upper cervical technique in Michigan for three years, chiropractor Dr. Steven Goodman moved to Lancaster in 1980. He developed the Goodman Method of Chiropractic, which focuses on the upper cervical spine. He notes that because the head and neck are vital to one’s balance, the specialized service focuses on getting to the root of debilitating pain, particularly chronic pain. Migraines and pain in the face, arms, back, and legs are treated at the atlas and C1 vertebra using an instrument Steven invented to tap under the skull and level the head without twisting the neck. Clients have traveled from Greece, Ukraine, and England to receive treatment at Goodman Chiropractic.

the stable where Christ was born. The 10th annual event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 11 and 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. Adam Fox, summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat,

noted that the final stop, which in past years included a movie, will now be a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. “In the final scene, the wise men … have just discovered a sign in the stars,” explained Fox. “They will debate ... whether they should risk a long dangerous journey of many months through the desert to see this king. In the end, they decide it’s worth it because the king is worth it.” To stay within COVID-19 limitations for buildings, organizers ask that those who wish to attend register for a particular time slot by visiting www.woodcrestretreat.org. A link on the main page can be used to register. Walk-ins will be accepted as well, but they may have to wait longer to start the journey. Instead of a wagon ride to the first scene, school buses will be utilized, and families will be seated together. record. More than 19,000 people have attended over the nine years the event has been held, and organizers hope to hit 20,000 this year. The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household.

All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. bands worn by residents will notify care team members when a resident who normally needs assistance is out of bed. “If a patient falls, the band will alert the team member to the fall and the location,” said Karick, who added that a dashboard system allows team members to locate a patient and make sure he or she is safe. Smoke-safe areas located within the building can keep residents and staff safe should a fire occur. To help married couples remain together, Meadow View offers a few special independent living apartments attached to a resident’s room. “Everything in the apartment is dementia friendly,” said Karick, who explained a twostep process for using the stove or fireplace. The outside entrance must be activated with a code or key swipe to protect the spouse with dementia from wandering off.

Should the independent spouse need to be away, the door to the apartment can be locked while the patient continues to be cared for by the Meadow View team. According to Karick, the creation of Meadow View, which welcomed residents in mid-September, was based on recognizing the need for memory support services. GSV leaders Steve Lindsey and Scott Miller invited her to bring her memory care team into the process of developing the new facility. “It was a great team effort,” Karick said. Melody Karick, the program director for Meadow View, Garden Spot Village’s (GSV) new memory support facility located on South Kinzer Avenue in New Holland, sees the new 40,000-square-foot building, which includes two mirror-image sections named Amber and Pearl, as a mini version of GSV. “People live here as a community,” said Karick, gesturing to the Town Square area of the building, which includes a general store, cosmetology shop, bistro, and chapel. “They visit each other.” Karick noted that only the front door and the gates to the five outdoor courtyards are locked. Within the walls, residents may move about freely. The design is focused on allowing those with dementia to continue to live with normalcy. “Dementia is not a disease that needs to take normalcy (from patients),” Karick said. “It’s not the end of life. We just need to help them learn to live a new life with new purpose.” A training room located off Town Square will serve as a meeting place for clubs led by residents. Pointing out the donated items in the general store, Karick noted, “Shopping is a normal part of life.” She added that donated items in the store may be chosen by residents at no charge. To help residents become familiar with their surroundings, the building has been

designed with cues they can follow. “There are two gray doors with no trim,” pointed out Karick. “Those doors are for team members.” A door between the two gray doors has trim and color because it is a restroom for all to use. In a neighborhood including five resident apartments, each door is a different color and has a different number of panels and a different door handle. Each also has a mailbox with the resident’s name.”We are giving several cues to what is their household and room,” explained Karick. Resident comfort and safety were paramount in the plan for the building and the care of its occupants. “When a resident gets out of bed, sensors will automatically turn on the bathroom light,” said Karick, who noted that when a resident returns to bed, the lights will dim and go off. Facility Dog Works Magic At Paradise Elementary

The Best Of Lancaster County – In A Box

Earlier this fall, Paradise Elementary School counselor Kelly Loder and facility dog Houdini were walking through the halls at the school when they heard one of the students who was upset. “I said, ‘How about we have a break with Houdini?’” recalled Loder. The student came out of the classroom to pet the dog. “He went back in and did well the rest of the day,” recalled Loder. Houdini is 65 pounds of furry fun. A yellow Lab from Susquehanna Service Dogs, Houdini was born in April of 2018, and he spent his first several weeks of life with his mom and his litter mates. At eight weeks of age, he was matched with a puppy raiser, and he lived with them until February of this year. Houdini’s puppy raiser taught him basic commands, such as “sit” and “lay down,” and completed his advanced training. In June, Loder got a call that the dog she had applied for in January of 2019 was ready to meet her and prepare for his move to Paradise. Before Houdini began working at the school, Loder and fellow Paradise staff

Loder first encountered service/facility dogs working in an educational setting while in graduate school at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. “I had a fellow counseling student who had a service dog,” recalled Loder. Seeing the positive way the future counselors responded to a dog they were not even allowed to pet amazed Loder, and she knew she was interested in working with one in the future. Loder began working at Paradise Elementary in August of 2016. In 2018, she asked administrators about the possibility. “Our district is all about anything that is good for our learners,” said Loder, who began researching therapy dogs and facility dogs after getting the go ahead. Her research led her to LampeterStrasburg School District, where she learned about facility dogs trained by Susquehanna. She was so impressed that she moved forward with an application. Because Houdini is owned by Loder but works at the school, the $5,000 needed to bring him to the school had to be raised by the community. Fundraising activities included Change Wars, which raised $800 before school closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Online donations and business contributions helped as well, and Loder held a birthday fundraiser. In addition to the initial cost, funds raised helped cover training supplies and Houdini’s vest and collar.

Paradise Elementary School counselor Kelly Loder and facility dog Houdini are at the school each day to greet students as they arrive.

member Meagan Warfel attended trainings to learn how to use a clicker and the verbal and hand signals for Houdini’s different cues. Loder explained that a facility dog is trained to respond to specific cues that will support the students. Among the cues Houdini knows are “visit,” to which he responds by resting his head in a child’s lap; “lap,” which tells him he can climb into a child’s lap to be petted; and “squish,” which tells him to lie across the stomach of a child who is lying on the floor. “He provides pressure to help calm them,” explained Loder. Because Loder is now Houdini’s owner, she was also taught about dog health, including first aid, how to tell if he is unwell, and how to keep him at his ideal weight. Two other teachers’ aides from the school are now training to be handlers as well.

During the shutdown in spring 2020, freelance writer Michael C. Upton took the opportunity to pen a travel guide of his home, Lancaster County. Pulling from more than 20 years of experience writing feature stories, interviews and reviews, Upton compiled 50 locally-inspired tips for those traveling to Lancaster County in his new book, “Greater Than a Tourist - Lancaster County.” Over the years, Upton cultivated relationships with business owners, artists and community leaders, providing him with a unique perspective of Lancaster County. In “Greater Than a Tourist - Lancaster County,” Upton avoids sending visitors to everyday tourist attractions and shares insights into the area’s history, attractions and natural beauty. From Instagramworthy spots along the backroads of rural farmland to personal accounts of some the area’s top dining experiences, Upton shows visitors how to experience the best Lancaster County has to offer. Print and electronic versions of the book are now available. For more information, readers may email info.somepro@gmail.com.

Working within COVID-19 restrictions, Pequea Baptist Church plans to hold Upward Basketball for youths at the church this fall and winter.

At Pequea Baptist, children learn basketball skills, but there is also a faith-based component that works devotionals into practice sessions. Game days feature a halftime challenge with an inspirational speaker from the league or the community. Registration for the program opened on Oct. 15 and will end Thursday, Dec. 10. Registration fees will be reduced this year, and registration will be limited to 150 players. Evaluation nights will be held on Monday, Nov. 30; Tuesday, Dec. 1; Monday, Dec. 7; and Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. each night. During the evaluation nights, the students will be sized for a jersey and asked to perform drills that demonstrate skill levels, including dribbling drills, shooting drills, and a defensive skill test. Previous basketball experience is not necessary. The purpose of the evaluations is to help divide students into teams for competition. First- and second-grade

boys and girls play together on coed teams. Older students have separate teams for boys and girls. Practices will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays, and each team will be assigned one evening a week to practice. A number of changes have been made to meet COVID-19 restrictions. “We have divided the year into two parts,” said Shondelmyer. “We are (running the program) for 10 weeks, so each (group) will play five weeks,” she explained. Boys in grades five through eight and girls in grades six through eight, will play games on Saturdays from Jan. 9 through Feb. 6. Boys in grades one through four and girls in grades one through five, will play Saturdays from Feb. 13 to March 13. Players will be required to wear masks when not playing, and spectators, which will be limited to two per player, will be requested to wear masks in the building. In addition, a half hour buffer has been added between games in order to clear out the building. During games, bagged snacks and bottled beverages will be handed out for participants and spectators to consume outside the building. An additional building will be open for families that have to remain at the church for multiple games. Registration for the older age group is available at https://registration.upward. org/UPW71071. Children who want to participate in the younger age group may be registered at https://registration .upward.org/UPW71182. Readers who have questions may call 717-442-4403.

BLACK FRIDAY NOV. 27TH

CHRISTMAS

Do you enjoy spending time with elementary school students? Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ? Do you have two daytime hours a week available to help youngsters learn about Jesus? If you answered “yes” to these three questions, then Tammy Brown wants to talk with you. Brown is the equipping coordinator for southern Lancaster and York counties for Joy El Ministries’ Bible Adventure program, and she is recruiting volunteers to help with existing offerings and to open new ones.

Bible Adventure programs are offered for students in third to fifth grades, with the occasional addition of sixth grade, depending on the school. For one hour a week during the school year, participants are excused from their classes to attend Bible Adventure. Typically, the programs are held at a nearby church, but some schools allow students to meet in a room on campus. Volunteers gather at the venues a half-hour before students arrive, then take another half-hour afterward to debrief. During the Bible Adventure hour, volunteers lead group

must past background checks. They do not need to be members of the hosting churches, but they must have a desire to introduce children to Jesus, Brown said. Additionally, bus drivers are needed. Interested individuals must have a CDL with a P endorsement. Brown has been involved with Bible Adventure for several years after previously working for another ministry. She came to know Jesus at age 5 and wants children to have that same opportunity. “I’ve had some pretty hard things in my life. I don’t think I would have made it through without Jesus and the hope of Him,” Brown explained. “I want these kids to learn about Jesus when I did, as early as possible, so they can rely on Him in good times and bad times.” Students may join Bible Adventure at any time, but they must first be registered. Caregivers may learn more about Bible Adventure and register youngsters at https://joyelgeneration.org/ bible-adventure/start-here. singing, teach a Bible lesson, and meet with students in small groups to work on memorizing Bible verses. Scripture memorization is a significant part of Bible Adventure, with a special points-and-rewards program to incentivize participation. Brown noted that the curriculum is created by Joy El staff members and covers the contents of the Bible from beginning to end. “We start with explaining what the Bible is because some children don’t know what the Bible is or why we believe what it says,” Brown said. “We cover creation, the fall, rescue through Jesus’ death on the cross, and restoration through relationship with Him.” This school year has been somewhat different because of the pandemic; each local Bible Adventure meeting follows its respective school’s protocol. Carefulness extends to transportation, with seating charts for buses. To volunteer, an individual must be at least age 16, but there is no upper age limit. Brown noted that several octo- and nonagenarians are actively involved with Bible Adventure. All volunteers

Information Posted On Vision And Diabetes Prevent Blindness, a volunteer eye health nonprofit organization, has declared November as Diabetes-Related Eye Disease Month. Educational resources include downloadable fact sheets, training modules, social media graphics, and more. Materials are available in English and Spanish. Diabetes-related eye disease refers to eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of the disease. Diabetes-related retinopathy is a disease that damages the blood vessels of the eye, causing them to leak and bleed into the retina. Individuals may not experience symptoms in the early stages of the disease, which is why it is important for individuals with diabetes to have

an eye exam annually, or as directed by their doctor. If diabetes-related retinopathy is left untreated, fluid can leak into the center of the macula, called the fovea, the part of the eye where sharp, straight-ahead vision occurs. The fluid makes the macula swell, blurring vision. This condition is called diabetes-related macular edema. It can occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy, although it is more likely to occur as the disease progresses. Other eye conditions common among people who have diabetes include cataract and glaucoma. Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye, which can cause vision to become blurry and colors to become dull. Aside from

aging, diabetes is the most common risk factor for cataract. Glaucoma occurs with damage to the optic nerve and possible loss of side vision, usually caused by an increase in fluid pressure inside the eye. Education, advocacy and access to care are key to helping to prevent vision loss from diabetes. The Center for Vision and Population Health at Prevent Blindness offers the “Seeing the Way to Better Health: Diabetes and Vision Health” issue brief. The goal of the document is to encourage diabetes health programs to integrate vision into their outreach and programs. It includes stories from peer programs, resources, and infographics for program use. The brief

November has been declared National Epilepsy Awareness Month. The Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern PA (EFEPA) encourages everyone to take the Purple Pledge to use their stories, voices, and social media channels as platforms to talk about epilepsy. People are asked to utilize November as a chance to teach others how to recognize a seizure and how to help someone experiencing a seizure. People are encouraged to raise awareness by turning their cities and towns purple with ribbons and lights and to plan events to gather family and friends together to inform, educate, and fundraise. Anyone can take the Purple Pledge and get more details on how to be involved by visiting www.efepanovember.org. This November, readers are also asked to turn their passions and hobbies into efforts that benefit the EFEPA and the local epilepsy community. People are invited to raise awareness and funds for the EFEPA. The new Fundraiser Your Way platform makes it easy to build a campaign, host and manage events, create challenges, or celebrate a special occasion or milestone. A supporter might host a yoga session, art class, or other virtual gathering or organize a dressdown day at his or her office

or school. To get started or learn more, readers may visit www.fundraise4efepa.org. For more details or help getting started, readers may contact development@efepa.org. Everyone is encouraged to be on the lookout for purple lights and ribbon displays across eastern Pennsylvania. Skyscrapers, courthouses, bridges, and iconic buildings will be illuminated purple throughout November for National Epilepsy Awareness Month. People are encouraged to snap a photo, post it on social media, and tag @EFEPA for their pictures to be featured. Readers may visit www.efepanovember.org for locations and updates as additional purple light and ribbon locations are added. Readers may also contact the aforementioned email address or 215-629-5003 to find out how they can get local companies and businesses to go purple or create their own purple ribbon campaign.
