Rough And Tumble - Preserving History For All BY ANN MEAD ASH
When giving a tour of the Rough & Tumble Museum, 4997 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, museum volunteer Kathleen Hazzard points out the buildings that represent the many organizations that make up the group. “That’s the horse-drawn museum. That building is antique cars, and that’s the blacksmith shop,” she notes, but then she pauses to explain how strongly she believes in the message of the organization. “We are preserving America’s agricultural and industrial history because it’s really important to remember where we came from as we go forward,” Hazzard said. Not only is the Rough & Tumble Museum, which covers 33 acres along Route 30 near Paradise, working to preserve history, but it is also working to correct misinformation about the group itself. “People don’t know we’re open to the public,” explained Hazzard. “We are a membership-based, board of directors-run museum, but everyone is welcome.” Bud Burdy, current Rough & Tumble president, echoed Hazzard.
The Rough & Tumble Museum will hold several events in 2022 that are open to the public.
“We continually learn that no one knows we exist and that we are open to the public,” said Burdy, who is hoping to bring STEM classes, Scout troops, school groups, and others to the museum. He noted that younger people are welcome to come and learn about the 12 or so diverse groups, which include a machine shop and a large engine group, that fall under the museum’s umbrella. “It’s not just an all-boys’ club,” Burdy
pointed out. “We have more and more ladies involved.” Rough & Tumble traces its roots to the 1940s, when Arthur Young, who owned a tractor business across the road from the museum’s location, organized a reunion, eventually buying the Myer Farm, which became Rough & Tumble. The organization will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2023. A full slate is planned for 2022. On Saturday, April 23, the Antique and Classic
Tractor Pull will be held. No admission will be charged, and gates will open at 8 a.m. “Our pulling committee has made some dramatic positive changes in the last five years,” said Hazzard of the kickoff event. The Spring Steam-Up will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 13, and 14, with a tractor pull at 6 p.m. on May 13, and demonstrations of plowing with vintage equipment. “People love to come and watch us plow the fields with
antique tractors and steam tractors,” said Hazzard. On Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, the International Harvester Club Chapter 9 will hold an event on the museum grounds, and Rough & Tumble will hold a tractor pull the same weekend. During John Deere Days, Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23, the Waterloo Boys turn the scenery special shades of green and yellow, with a Parade of Power and more. The See Rough And Tumble pg 5

The church has held a children’s Christmas program for the past six years. The event is not a church fundraiser. Rather, the activity is held to serve local families and introduce them to the church. “Everyone who came (to the Christmas event) in other years has really enjoyed it,” Baldwin said, noting that last year’s event was limited to outdoor activities because of the pandemic. “It’s a community-based (outreach). Everything is free.” The church also hosted a successful Kids’ Carnival in September. “We had 119 kids for our children’s carnival,” Baldwin noted. The Sunday service at Limeville UMC is held at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school is offered prior to the service at 9 a.m. All services are livestreamed on Facebook. The church recently renovated its Sunday school wing, where it will begin to offer a children’s group in January 2022 for youngsters ages 3 to 12. The program will be open to all children in the community. “The kids’ program will meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.,” said Baldwin. “We are planning (to offer) singing, a Bible story and a craft.” Final details about the new youth group will be finalized this month. The public is also invited to attend Christmas Eve services at Limeville UMC on Friday, Dec. 24, at 3 and 10 p.m. For more information, call 717-442-4010 or visit www.facebook.com/Limeville UMC.

Historical Society, Museum Post Name Changes Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has changed its name to Mennonite Life to welcome new communities and generations into Mennonite history and local history movements. The name change and rebrand signify a renewed commitment to clear communication and indicate that the organization is open to everyone. Those choosing the new name felt that Mennonite Life improves visual impact and will be easy to remember. The Mennonite Life campus on Millstream Road in Lancaster offers a Visitors Center, formerly called Mennonite Information Center, which introduces guests to Mennonites and hosts the Biblical Tabernacle Experience. In the Collections building, visitors can enjoy the Mennonite Life Museum or research using its archives and library. The museum in Willow Street has gone by many names, starting with The
Hans Herr House. Realizing the house was built by Christian Herr, and there was no definitive documentation on whether Christian’s father, Hans, ever lived there, the name changed more than a decade ago to the 1719 Herr House & Museum. The 1719 Museum simplifies the existing name. At the 1719 Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century life through a guided visit to the 1719 Herr House. Visitors will also learn about the history and cultures of Native Americans by experiencing a full-sized replica of an indigenous longhouse, interpreted by a guide. To learn more, including hours of operation, visit www.mennonitelife.org.

weekly for market shoppers. “Can openers are important,” said Burns. “Usually once a year I ask our community (during a food drive) for can openers.” She also said she is thankful for the many donors who give cans of fruit and veggies and soup with the pull top lids. Other recommendations from the infographic included donating oil, spices, sugar, flour, eggs, and fresh produce, which the market welcomes. Nonfood items such as dishwashing detergent and feminine hygiene products are also accepted. “ We believe everyone deserves coffee and tea and cake and frosting,” said Burns, who referred to The Factory’s partnership with stores including Weis Markets, which allows the organization to stock meat, and Shady Maple and local neighbors that make sure the mar-
ket can offer fresh produce. “I believe you have to ask for what you need and get your community involved in making that happen,” said Burns, who added that when companies or organizations offer to have a food drive for The Factory, she gives them brown bags with a specific list of up to six items stapled to each bag. “(Those items represent) things that we are in need of at that specific time,” explained Burns. “That way, people know exactly what to donate.” In addition, Burns recommended giving gift cards for purchases at local supermarkets. She noted that gift cards for discount stores and markets can be helpful, as well. Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory and its mission may visit https://thefactoryministries .com.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms at the 32nd annual ABC Excellence in Construction (EIC) Awards Gala held Nov. 3 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim. This event highlights the top regional projects built by ABC Keystone contractor members throughout the past year. The highest award of the evening went to the Project of the Year (POY) recipient. The criteria to receive the POY Eagle award were its subjective wow factor in the following areas: community impact, client satisfaction, design features and positive notoriety or high-profile of the project. The 2021 POY was awarded to Poole Anderson Construction LLC for its nearly 33,000square-foot Franklin & Marshall Winter Visual Arts Center project in Lancaster, submitted in the Institutional $10 to $25 Million category. Poole Anderson Construction was the construction manager for the project. The unique design included a suspended structure with cantilevered trusses, channel and structural glass systems and a recycled glass aggregate envelope. This year, the Project of the Year Award finalists included the following: Benchmark

This year’s Overall Safety Awards and recipients include the following: 2021 Excellence in Construction Safety Award - General Contractor, Benchmark Construction Co. Inc., Brownstown, and 2021 Excellence in Construction Safety Award - Specialty Contractor, H.L. Wiker Inc., Lancaster. When Candace Abel became involved with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) program in Lancaster, she noticed something. There were plenty of programs in place to help the children she was advocating for, but it was a different story for the young mothers. “The mother of my very first CASA child appointment was developmentally disabled and only 19 years old,” Abel recalled. “She was really in need of strong and loving guidance, but she did not fit into any of the local programs for single moms. … I kept thinking what she needed was a reliable ally who could offer both advice and comfort to

make the difference in her future life.” From that experience, Second Grace was born. The twoyear program for single mothers below the age of 25 will match “Graces” - the mothers - with “Sages” - trained mentors who will advocate on the mother’s behalf. The Sage might do anything from offering advice to driving the Grace to court or child care classes, helping with budgeting or assisting with finding housing. Each Grace will have her own Sage, but the Graces will move through the program in groups of four who will attend monthly Grace Gatherings. “This will give our Grace clients the opportunity to build community with someone who can understand their challenges,” Abel explained. “Additionally, they will need a better peer support system to get and stay healthy.” During the second year of Second Grace, the Graces will move into the work phase of

the program. “Our vision includes long-term stability for our Grace, and an understanding of the value of steady employment is an important piece of this stability,” Abel stated. The goal is to employ the Graces either at Girl Crush, a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017, or other local businesses. Abel founded Girl Crush after retiring from Brittany’s Hope, the special needs adoption advocacy program she created after losing her first adopted child in a car accident. She’s the mother of 17 children, 13 of whom are girls. “Every time I would adopt another daughter, people would say to me, ‘You must have a girl crush,’” she said. Although Abel was inspired by another organization, Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the idea for Second Grace is a unique one and required creation from the ground up. “The cream of the crop came forward,” she said, of Deborah Wilson Gadsden, a child welfare expert who is writing the curriculum for the Sages, and Karen Jaskot, a family and addiction therapist who has written the curriculum for the Graces. With the foundation for Second Grace set and a strong executive committee and board of directors in place, the program is ready to begin Sage mentor training. “Sages need the fortitude to go the road for two years with these women and the extraordinary, compassionate patience to stand firm and help when these women meet obstacles,” Abel said. “I am sure that when we make a good match, it will be life changing.” An information session for potential Sages is set for Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Event Barn at 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy. Weis Markets Receives Award
Bird Club To Hear About Conservation
The American Heart Association recently recognized Weis Markets with a Distinguished Achievement Award for its significant contributions to the success of the Association’s Eastern States region. According to Natalie Wech, co-chair of the American Heart Association’s southcentral Pennsylvania board of directors, Weis has raised and committed more than $1.5 million since its inaugural Life Is Why consumer campaign, which launched in February 2019. In 2021, during American Heart Month, February, store teams across the company’s 197 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia raised $575,000 for the Life Is Why consumer campaign. Additionally, Weis Markets became the first sponsor of the new Live Fierce Capital Region community impact campaign. This yearlong campaign helped the American Heart Association address community health priorities, including providing CPR in Schools training kits to several school districts throughout central Pennsylvania, supplying a local Federally Qualified Health Center with blood pressure self-monitoring tools to help patients most at risk of uncontrolled high blood pressure to manage their blood pressure at home. The campaign also equipped Harrisburg School District with new filtered water bottle filling stations, which will pro-
