Planting It Forward As the fallen leaves swirled in chilling winds on Nov. 10, a hardy group of volunteers assembled to plant trees at the Strasburg Community Park, 151 Precision Ave., Strasburg. The time had come to begin the installation of saplings in a grove that had grown tall enough to provide the necessary conditions for shadeloving understory trees. “Over five years ago, Strasburg Lions Club began participating in the annual tree planting at the park. It was then that the Lions donated the funds and manpower to establish an upland oak See Tree Planting pg 2

Leaman noted that between 130 to 150 singers generally take part. According to www.messiahsing along.com, the full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on Christ’s suffering and death. The third part concludes with triumph over sin and death through the Resurrection. Leaman explained that at Christmastime, the Chester County sing-along covers all of the first part, sections of the second part and excerpts of the third part of the score. A Lancaster County sing-along is also offered at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster during the Easter season. That program begins with the overture See “Messiah” Sing-Along pg 14
Road Runners Plan Christmas Eve Activity By Ann Mead Ash
Volunteers representing the Strasburg Lions Club, the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, and the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, as well as several families, participated in the annual tree planting event at the Strasburg Community Park on Nov. 10.
“You show up with a friend or come alone and make a friend,” said Kathi Markley, a member of the Lancaster Road Runners Club. Markley was referencing the annual free Christmas Eve Run the club has held for about two decades. Markley wants those considering taking part to know that they will have company along the route no matter what their pace. “There are faster people (and) middle-of-the-pack runners and people who meander slowly,” she said. “You See Road Runners pg 8
Members and friends of the Lancaster Road Runners Club will gather once again on the steps of the Lancaster Dispensing Company for a special free Christmas Eve Run, with participante meeting at 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 24. Interested area residents are welcome to take part in the 4-mile jaunt.

Scouts Host Peace Light The Peace Light was received at an arrival ceremony on Dec. 5 at the office of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, located at 630 Janet Ave., Suite B-114, Lancaster. The Peace Light will be available from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays from Dec. 6 through Friday, Dec. 21, at the council office. Attendees are encouraged to bring an oil lamp or an enclosed candle to take it with them. For more than 1,000 years, a flame has been continuously lit in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Israel. As has been an annual tradition for the last 33 years, a Scout from Austria is chosen to light two blastproof miner’s lamps from the grotto flame. The lamps are then carried by jet from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria. There the Peace Light is distributed at a service of dedication to delegations from across Europe, and these delegations take the light back to their own countries, along with a message of peace. Since 2004, the miner’s lamps containing the Peace Light have been flown from Vienna to New York City. Boy Scout leaders from the U.S. light their lanterns from the miner’s lamps in New York and spread out across the U.S. and Canada to share the Peace Light. This is the first year that the Pennsylvania Dutch Council will host the Peace Light. The Peace Light is a physical reminder of the reason for the Christmas season. The Pennsylvania Dutch Council serves nearly 5,500 youths in a variety of programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. For more information, readers may call 717-553-4200 or visit www.peacelight.org or www.padutchbsa.org.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, Convert to Code will host the #HolidayHack2018 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Listrak headquarters, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. Students of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend to meet and learn from fellow coders and build together at the holidaythemed hackathon. Admission is free, and pizza will be provided for lunch. Registration is required, and interested individuals may sign up at http:// convert2code.com/#!/holidayhack. What exactly is a hackathon? Caleb Weaver, who founded Convert to Code with Danae Martin, explained it as a coding marathon where a person may convert his or her ideas and passions into code and build whatever they wish. Hack, by definition, means “to achieve novel and clever outcomes by creatively overcoming limitations of software systems.” Organizers encourage anyone who is interested to attend, whether they are experienced coders or have never seen a line of code. Code mentors, introductory workshops, and code starter packs will be available for anyone just starting out. Attendees should bring a laptop (not a tablet), a charger, and snacks, and they should be
ready to use their imagination. When Weaver first approached Martin about starting Convert to Code, he wanted to host hackathon events throughout the year. “However, we quickly learned that we would be able to better serve the community by instead hosting free workshops to expose our participants to coding and computer science,” said Weaver. Weaver and Martin, who both graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2017, began hosting free computer programming workshops for the community in 2017. The coding mentors and instructors at all of the Convert to Code workshops are all local software engineers and developers who volunteer their time. “To see some wild idea you have begin to materialize and turn from an abstract idea into a concrete organization is honestly a blessing,” shared Weaver. “Being able to sit down and look at our numbers for our first year, we reached over 150 people in over 22 school districts throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and York areas, which, of course, is just huge.” Since Convert to Code has now hosted numerous workshops and established more connections throughout the local area, Weaver and Martin revisited the

Cold temperatures did not keep runners and walkers from taking part in the annual Turkey Bowl held on Thanksgiving morning at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook. “We had a beautiful but very, very cold 27th annual Turkey Bowl race - coldest on record from what I understand,” stated Bruce Gregory, camp director. “Despite the frigid weather, we had 429 participants, plus about 45 race staff.” The Turkey Bowl, which included a 5K race around the camp, as well as a 1-mile fun run for children, attracted local residents, as well as those from out of town who were visiting relatives in the area for the holiday. “As is the case each year, we had many local runners as well as participants from all over the country from Georgia and Kentucky to Massachusetts and from New Jersey to Colorado - usually in (town) visiting family nearby,” said Gregory. “ We had great showing from Honey Brook as well and many families that have made this a tradition. “Our youngest registered participant was 1 year old, and the oldest was 75,” Gregory added. He credited the more than 40 volunteers who made the race a success, as well as Dick Fitch, who did the timing for the 1-mile run, and the 30 local businesses that sponsored or donated to the race. The top overall male winner was Ben Zook of Gordonville, with a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds. The top overall

female winner was Traci Tempone of Lancaster, with a time of 20:52. There were 353 finishers in the 5K race. In the 1-mile fun run, there were 38 finishers. Elias McConaghay, 7, of Westbrook, N.Y., came in first, with a time of 6:53. Everett Olsen of Honey Brook, 11, finished in second place, with a time of 6:54. In third place for the boys and fourth place overall was Micah Boyer, 8, of Honey Brook, with a time of 7:30. The first girl finisher of the fun run was Katie Brass, 11, of Akron, who was also the third overall finisher, with a time of 7:12. Naomi Rigg, 10, of Lynchburg, Va., with a time of 7:33, finished in second place for the girls. The third-place girl was Kaylee Zimmerman, 7, of Stevens, with a time of 8:14. A complete list of Turkey Bowl finishers, including their individual times, and a listing of sponsors and donors are available at www.telhaicamp .org/events/turkey-bowl-run. Following the run, participants generally take some time to mingle by browsing through Central Market and then meeting at 11 a.m. for brunch at the Dispensing Company. Markley said that the number of runners depends on the weather. “We have had as many as 40 or as few as 10,” she noted. She added that parking spaces are available in a number of adjacent lots, but parking will not be free. Readers who would like more information may visit www.lrrclub.org and click on “LRRClub Christmas Eve Run” on Dec. 24. In addition to the free Christmas Eve Run, Markley noted that the club holds free Tuesday night fun runs in Long’s Park and Sunday morning trail runs at Lancaster County Park. “These are free and open to everyone,” she stated, adding that often the free runs are good opportunities for prospective members to get a feel for club activities. “Try it if you’re thinking about joining and you want to know what it’s like,” she invited. “We welcome everybody.”
don’t have to feel like you have to be an Olympic-caliber athlete (to take part).” Markley and other club members have planned this year’s run to begin with runners meeting near the steps of the Lancaster Dispensing Company, 33-35 N. Market St., Lancaster, adjacent to Central Market, at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 24. The run will begin at 9 a.m. Runners need not be club members to join in the event. According to Markley, the run follows a course that is a modified version of the Red Rose Run. “(The Red Rose Run) normally starts in Binns Park area,” explained Markley, “but this starts near Central Market and loops through Lancaster County Park.” She noted that the course, which runs downhill on Duke Street, is about 4 miles in length. “There is a flat section through County Park, and if you’re running with a friend and chatting it goes by quickly,” she said. “Coming back there’s a change of climb.” Markley added that there is a group of members who often walk the course.

The fourth annual contemplative Christmas Eve service, featuring music, readings, candlelighting and a time of silence, will be held on Monday, Dec. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House, one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County. The event is designed to offer a deeper, quieter and more solemn celebration of the Christmas holiday. People of all faiths are welcome to attend. “As the service begins, we will still be in daylight, but during our hour together, the day will grow dark outside,” said congregation member Miriam Blank. “ We will be lighting candles throughout the evening, bringing light into the darkness.” Live Christmas music will be provided by Brenda Sauder and her daughter, Faith, accompanied by Louise Ranck on the piano. “ We will have poetry, Bible (passages) and reflective readings and periods of contemplative silence,” Blank explained. “There will also be a fire going in the fireplace, which was how the Quakers (in olden times) stayed warm. It was all they had (as a source of heat).” At the end of the service, everyone will sing “Silent Night” together. There will be light refreshments downstairs in the church hall following the service. According to www.sadsbury friendsmeeting.org, the congregations of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, do not have a pastor and there are no set readings during normal services. Instead, members gather for silent reflection. Should people feel moved to speak, they may share their thoughts with the group. The service may be completely silent, or at other times vocal ministry

LCPN Schedules Dinner Distribution On Saturday, Dec. 22, the 32nd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The project will distribute an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m., and no pre-screening is required. In addition to the distribution, LCPN is partnering with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services,
Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions and TLC Homelessness and Veterans to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. More information is available by calling 717-569-8521.

may come in the form of prayer, praise of God, song, teaching or witnessing. Worship ends with the shaking of hands. The Sadsbury Friends Meeting House was constructed in 1747. Historically a peace church, Sadsbury Friends played a part in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War era. Originally, men and women gathered for worship in separate rooms, with partitions between them that could be opened or closed, but that separation is a part of the past. In modern meeting houses, men and women sit together. For the Christmas Eve service, the main floor partitions at the meeting house will be opened for the larger-than-usual gathering. To honor safety standards, doors will close when all seats are taken. Blank said that last year, some of those who attended the service were in the area visiting relatives for the holiday. “We had someone come from Bronx, New York, and we had Amish and Mennonites (in attendance). We had such a diversity,” she said. “It’s a unique thing in this busy culture. It offers something different for the community.” Sadsbury Friends Meeting is located at 1089 Simmontown Road, a half-mile east of Route 41, Gap. For more information, readers may visit www.sadsbury friendsmeeting.org or email info@sadsburyfriendsmeeting.or g. More information is also available by searching for “Sadsbury Friends Meeting” on Facebook. Freewill donations will be received at the service.

Language interpretation at Stevens’ suggestion. “The signers are really important,” said Leaman. “It started because Stevens came to one of the sing-alongs and she came up to me afterward (and mentioned having signers), and we have had signers ever since at both venues. “We may have people who can’t hear, (and also) others love it because it adds something,” Leaman added. The start of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application process for the 2018-19 season has begun. LIHEAP provides assistance for home heating bills to keep low-income Pennsylvanians warm and safe during the winter months. Assistance is available for renters and homeowners. Crisis and regular LIHEAP applications are available now through Friday, April 12, 2019. During the 2017-18 LIHEAP season, 344,008 households statewide received nearly $116 million in LIHEAP cash benefits. These households received an average season benefit of $337. LIHEAP benefits are paid directly to the utility company. Consumers are encouraged to enroll in LIHEAP and to explore other assistance programs available from their utilities and various nonprofit groups. Combined, these many different resources help hundreds of thousands of households and families across the commonwealth every year. The program’s goal is to prevent LIHEAP customers from entering the winter season with shut-off utilities. Eligibility for the 2018-19 LIHEAP season is set at 150 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. Online applications for LIHEAP can be completed at www. compass.state.pa.us. Paper applications are available through local county assistance offices. For helpful tips on keeping warm throughout the winter while saving money on utility costs, readers may visit www.energysavers.gov. For more information on LIHEAP, readers may visit www.dhs.pa.gov.

PVPL Schedules Annual Fundraising Gala a By Ann Mead Ash
Library director Catherine O’Sullivan cannot wait to see the Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL) after it is set up and decorated for the annual Tasting Gala. “This is one of our major fundraisers, and it’s beautiful,” said O’Sullivan. “The library is transformed with candlelight and tablecloths.” The 2018 event, which will be held at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, will offer attendees tastings of a variety of foods and beverages. This year’s tasting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. A few high-top tables
offered samplings of roasted beef tenderloin with caramelized onions, blue cheese crumbles, and burgundy reduction, along with the popular creamy crab and corn chowder. “The soup is the high point,” said O’Sullivan. “That is a big (draw).” Shrimp cocktail, hoisin grilled pork tenderloin with Asian slaw, and local cheeses will also be served. This year’s dessert table will feature a variety of sweets, including chocolates donated by local businesses. Hot milk sponge cake will be brought to the venue by Sadie Ebersol, and sweet treats will be provided by a neighboring bakery. International coffees and teas

521 Club To Offer Annual Event By Ann Mead Ash
PA-015100
A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives,” she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum. On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. The club is overseen by a ninemember board, of which Dan Chultz is a member. “Christmas is a very sensitive time for anybody in recovery,” said Chultz.

“We start at noon on Christmas Eve with a kickoff, and we have a meeting starting each hour for 24 hours.” According to Chultz, each meeting is chaired by a different club member. “(The format) provides people with a chance to share their experiences or issues with family and friends,” said Chultz. “The whole holiday season, beginning with Thanksgiving, is difficult for someone in recovery because it triggers so many emotions and that can be difficult to handle,” Chultz explained. “The easy way out would be substance abuse, and we don’t want that to happen so here we are.” Those who attend will find that food and a welcoming atmosphere will be plentiful no matter the time. “Food is replenished every hour,” said Chultz, who noted that the 521 Club is packed with about 100 people when the event begins. “(Attendance) tapers off and on (throughout the 24 hours),” noted Chultz. “People leave but for those who have nowhere to go, we’re here.” Chultz added that because of varying work schedules, it is important for the club to be open all times of the day or night during the ALCATHON. “It’s a place for people who may have lost families or relocated here and don’t have family here,” said Chultz. “People come here and socialize with friends.” Chultz noted that those being served by local organizations such as The Gatehouse and Transition to Community/Potter’s
Dan Chultz, 521 Club board member, invites area residents to the annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON that will run from noon on Dec. 24 to noon on Dec. 25. The club, which is a location for recovery-based activities, is located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster. House are invited to take part in the ALCATHON. The 521 Club was established as a meeting place for those in recovery. Social activities offered at the club include dances, bingo, and bonfires. Club members have also reached out to residents in the Butter Road area. “We pride ourselves in trying to be neighbor-friendly,” said Chultz. “In the summer, we have a picnic and we invite the neighbors to socialize and see what we’re all about.” He noted that, which the exception of the ALCATHON, most club activities end by 9 or 10 p.m.
According to Chultz, the 521 Club, which offers membership to anyone who has accumulated 30 days of continuous sobriety, serves as an important stepping stone for those facing the challenges of staying in recovery. “We provide a way for people in recovery to realize they can lead a normal life, have fun, be involved with people, and do things that don’t involve substance abuse,” he said. Customer Care Center Updated The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has modernized its online Customer Care Center www.customercare.penndot.go v - to make it easier to report concerns on state-maintained roadways with new mapping capabilities, optional photo uploads, and a mobile-friendly interface. The purpose of the new Customer Care Center is to make it easier for members of the public to share their concerns or feedback. The modernized service sorts concerns into categories: road or bridge conditions; removing something from a roadway; traffic, signs, or signals; ongoing roadwork or projects;
or general questions and concerns. Users can map their current location to document a concern or choose an address or roadway, as well as other relevant location information, and even upload photos related to the concern. These descriptions will provide better information for PennDOT staff and can reduce the amount of time needed to gather more information from customers submitting concerns. As of Sept. 30, the previous Customer Care Center had nearly 45,000 concerns submitted this year. More than 96 percent of those concerns have been resolved.
Motorists are asked to be as specific as possible when providing locations of concerns. Motorists should report the county, municipality, street name, and state route number, which can be found on small black and white signs posted along state highways. In addition, a description of any familiar landmarks would be helpful for PennDOT to locate the problem area. Maintenance concerns will be corrected as soon as possible. Emergency road repairs, such as road wash-outs, are handled on a top-priority basis. Concerns may also be reported through 800-FIX-ROAD
(800-349-7623), though the number should not be used to report traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should continue to call 911 to report these types of emergencies. Customers with questions or concerns related to driver or vehicle services should visit www.dmv.pa.gov. For concerns related to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, readers should visit www.paturnpike.com.

Ruth Dunlap, resident of Thistledown, the Cooperative Living House at Garden Spot Village, accepted the 2018 LeadingAge Innovation Award on behalf of Garden Spot Communities at the LeadingAge Annual Meeting and Expo in Philadelphia on Oct. 28. LeadingAge Awards Committee selected Garden Spot Communities as the recipient of the 2018 Innovation Award in September. According to Kathryn Roberts, board chair of LeadingAge and the awards committee, the award is
given to recognize programs for their innovation and excellence. Garden Spot Communities was chosen for the award because its leadership team recognized the need for affordable housing for older adults on fixed incomes, explored different opportunities and concepts to develop a Cooperative Living House and partnered with the local community to build the home. Members of the New Holland and greater Lancaster community helped to build the home by donating funds and materials
and volunteering. Garden Spot CEO Steve Lindsey believes that the Cooperative Living House is a project that can be scalable for the future. Garden Spot Village welcomed the first residents to Thistledown in March.
