Early Learning Benefits Partnership Brings Prekindergarten Center To PVSD BY ANN MEAD ASH

hen Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) assistant superintendent Rich Eby read the statistics, they were sobering. “We know that 85% of the child’s brain is developed by 5 years old. Those entering kindergarten without a quality prekindergarten education have mastered 1,000 words less (than their peers who attended prekindergarten),” he said. From there, it got worse. “Children who aren’t proficient (readers) by fourth grade are four times more likely to drop out, and adults with low-level literacy are more likely to be living in poverty.” The good news is that on Nov. 17, partners in the Pequea Valley area, including PVSD, Community Action Partnership (CAP), and the Together Initiative, took steps to be sure children in the district receive quality prekindergarten education when the Pequea Valley Early Learning Center, 166 S. New Holland Road,

W

Kinzers, opened in the Pequea Valley Intermediate School. A small gathering held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the entrance to the center behind the school beginning at 8 a.m. The center will provide education and day care to area children. Amanda Burns, vice president of communications at CAP, welcomed the group. “We are really excited to be able to supply high-quality early learning for the community,” she said, noting that the program will benefit the youngest community members and provide services that support working families. Eby spoke next, calling the occasion a “phenomenal day.” “It’s been a long journey to get to this point,” he said, going back seven years to a time when the district had 40 children on a waiting list and progressing through the institution of a Head Start program at the Together Community Center, and the decision to put the new early learning center in a vacant wing at the intermediate school.

Christmas tree? Probably not, but is it wise to bring a pet into the home during the holidays only to fully grasp the reality of pet ownership when life returns to normal in January? Alexis Vollmer, an animal care technician, with the Humane League of Lancaster County, said that the last couple of years the organization has been lucky following Christmas. “We had quite a few less returns compared to how many were adopted out,” noted Vollmer, who credits the matchmaking skills of league members and staff with that low number.

consider the demands of a new puppy or kitten. “Consistency (in a schedule) helps keep the animals from getting stressed out,” she stated. “We have gotten a lot of animals (back) because people didn’t have the time anymore.” Several factors are involved in helping to select an animal that fits with the family’s dynamic. “We work with the information we get on the applications and what we know about the animal,” said Vollmer of the matchmaking process. She noted that when there are already pets in the home, it is important to introduce them slowly and have plans in place in case they do not warm up to each other right away. In the case of a dog, a family may bring the pet to meet the potential adoptee. She noted that a kitten may be a better choice than an adult cat if the home already has a dog in it. Whether small children live in the home or visit often is also a determining factor. Vollmer noted that the league recommends bringing children or grandchildren to meet the dog or cat at the shelter. “We want to see how they are here and give adopters feedback on behavior we’re seeing and whether or not we think they will do OK with each other,” she stated, adding that the child’s energy level will be considered. She noted that younger animals are often better with children. When a new animal comes home, it should be given its own space to decompress and dogs should be taken out often. “They need to get adjusted,” she said, adding that cats especially can be overwhelmed easily. Lastly, Vollmer commented on the element of surprise in getting a new animal. “Sometimes people aren’t expecting a commitment for a present,” she said. “ We tell people to make the surprise coming to the shelter to pick out the animal. It’s still a great experience, but it circumvents some potential issues.” More information about the Humane League may be found at https://humanepa .org/partners/humane -league-of-lancaster-county or by searching for “the Humane League of Lancaster County” on Facebook.

Bruce Tully, pastor of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, and Ron Gardiner, music director at the church, have been considering the hurts of a “weary world” for a while. “We talked about this five years ago,” recalled Gardiner. “But it evolved when I found this piece of music.” The anthem Gardiner shared with Tully was called “When Memory Fades,” and the piece became the impetus for “A Thrill of Hope,” a program of seasonal songs and God’s Word to comfort those affected by loss, to be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19. Tully noted that all are welcome to the service, but that the mix of music by composer Joel Raney with Scripture readings and a message of hope and encouragement is especially designed for those who have experienced losses. “This goes beyond (physical loss) to encompass the loss of (a loved one) due to memory loss or anything that would take the person you know away,” said Tully, who stated there is a special type of mourning associated with this loss that affects people strongly at Christmas. He added that medical professionals may benefit from the service as well. Highlights of the event will include soloist Carolyn McClain singing “You Do Not Walk Alone,” and a unique opportunity to place an ornament honoring a loved one on a live tree, which will later be planted on the church grounds.

PVSD superintendent Erik Orndorff spoke of the importance of collaboration. “This is what happens when we all come together,” he said, lauding Eby, the Together Initiative, and CAP. He added that having the Together Initiative in the area has changed his view of challenging issues. “The Together Initiative changed things from ‘Can we solve this?’ to ‘How can we solve this?’” he explained. CAP CEO Vanessa Philbert spoke, saying, “What’s most impactful for me is having a superstar

the congregation since the composer visited the church a few years ago. “We got to know him, and we do a lot of his music,” said Gardiner. “He has done some interesting things musically that give (his compositions) a whole fresh approach.” Light refreshments will be served following the service. We can only drive action through partnership.” Just prior to the ribbon cutting, Stacy Lewis, director Thrive to Five, said she was especially happy to celebrate because she recalls the genesis of the opportunity during the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Launching an early learning center seemed so daunting,” she said. “What we have been able to accomplish underscores the backbone of resilient communities,” Lewis noted, adding, “I think the success we celebrate today was born out of intentional relationships and partnering.”

The Sadsbury Friends Meeting House, which was constructed in 1747, making it one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County, will be site of the sixth Contemplative Christmas Eve program on Friday, Dec. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. The event will include candle lighting, a time of silent prayer, a poetry reading, readings from Scripture and music. The event was canceled in 2020 but is resuming this year. According to www.sadsburyfriendsmeeting.org, the quiet, thoughtful program is designed as a “contrast to the modern consumer culture that surrounds the Christmas season.” The underlying theme for the program will be “Light in

the Darkness” as told through the traditional Swedish legend “The Christmas Rose.” “We have divided the story into four parts, and each part (will be) read by a different reader,” said Connie Webster, a member of the Meeting. “This will be interspersed with music and a few moments of silence.” The fireplace will be lit in the meetinghouse for the Constructed in 1747, the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House occasion, and the entire is one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County. event will take place by candlelight. “When we start at 4 p.m. there is still some light outside, and we light a few candles on our candle tables Family Chiropractic early in the program,” said Webster. “ We have three Dr. Charles JangDhari 7 Center Street • P.O. LEADS Announces 2021 Ornament As one of the first buildings constructed at Franklin & Marshall College, Old Main has stood the test of time. To commemorate its place in Lancaster history, the iconic structure has been chosen as the 14th Lancaster Landmark Ornament, an annual fundraiser for Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), the allvolunteer group that provides all city holiday decorations, including the Penn Square Christmas tree and summertime hanging flower baskets in Lancaster. LEADS selected the 165-yearold Old Main as this year’s honored landmark. Dedicated in 1856, Old Main embodies the classic details associated with Gothic Revival architecture, including extreme verticality, lancet windows and louvers, battlements, and finials. It was designed by the Baltimore firm Dixon, Balbirnie & Dixon and built by Lancaster contractor Haden Patrick Smith at a cost of $25,136 starting in 1854. The 3D ornaments are renditions of structures that have

played a meaningful role in Lancaster’s historic and cultural life, crafted of solid brass plated in 24-karat gold. For the first time, the ornament is offered in full color. It can be used as a tree or window decoration or displayed in the gold foil box it comes in along with a card telling its history. Since 2012, LEADS has invested more than $75,000 to improve the city’s holiday decorations. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go toward paying for that investment. Ornaments can be purchased at several Lancaster locations, including BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, 342 N. Queen St., rear warehouses; Festoon at the Firehouse, 202 N. Duke St.; the Turkey Lady at Central Market; and the city Visitors Center on Penn Square. They can also be ordered by calling BUiLDiNG CHARACTER at 717-394-7201. At the time, Santiago worked with Teen Challenge. “I took the students down to participate, and Ryan was one of the presenters doing his ventriloquism in the prisons,” explained Santiago, who said he had been considering Baumgardner, who has performed locally and on television, for the Valentine Sweetheart Banquet for a few years. “It finally worked out to be a good fit,” said Santiago, who noted that as a traveling performer with a wife and family, Baumgardner understands the journey of marriage and how being away can affect that institution. men. Santiago said that most graduates move on to other county organizations that offer a phase two program. Currently, the organization is working toward funding two efforts. The first is to raise $25,000 to provide scholarships for two students. The effort had brought in about $6,000 as of early December. The second has a goal of $8,000 to replace the bunk beds at the house with metal frame beds and new mattresses and bedding. As of early December, about $3,500 had been raised toward that goal.
