Joel Moore of Narvon, author of the Civil War series “Journey Into Darkness,” is the recipient of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge award known as the George Washington Honor Medal. Moore was notified of the award in a letter from the Freedoms Foundation dated Sept. 12. “Journey Into Darkness” tells the story of a few of the more than 200,000 boys and youths who took part in the battles of the Civil War. Moore began the work in 1960 when he was still in high school. The writing progressed slowly as time and research allowed, and as

Several years ago a Tel Hai Retirement Community employee wanted to find a way to bring students and seniors together. She connected with teachers at Pequea Valley High School (PVHS), and a few suggestions were tossed around before someone hit upon the idea of students offering to aid seniors with questions about technology. “They came up with the idea of tech help, because our residents find computers and email difficult,” said Judy Schweitzer, community life coordinator See Technology Help pg 12

The fifth annual Contemplative Christmas Eve Service will be held at Sadsbury Friends Meeting House on Tuesday, Dec. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. All are welcome to get away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season for an hour of music, silence and poetry by the fireplace at the meeting house. This will be a candlelight service, with candles lit during intervals throughout the service. The underlying theme for the service is hope. “We always hold it at 4 in the afternoon because when people arrive it’s still light outside, and when they leave its dark,” said Connie Webster, meeting clerk. “During the service more and more candles get lit.” As in past years, the quiet, thoughtful service is in contrast to the modern consumer culture that surrounds the Christmas season. “Besides the historical building, I think it’s a different kind of service because we have several moments of silence interspersed through-
out. We have the music and we have somebody doing readings, but we also have several times when everybody sits in silence for a few minutes. I think some people like that,” Webster said. “I’ve been told that for a lot of people that have not been to a Friends meeting before, the moments of silence are good for them.” Music will be provided by Matt Krebs on piano, and his daughters, Landry and Anika, will be the vocalists. The music will mainly be traditional carols and sacred songs of the season. In addition to enjoying the service, visitors will feel a touch of history as they experience what a Quaker (Society of Friends) service may have looked like in the 18th and 19th centuries. Located at 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House is one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County. Constructed in 1747, the building follows the typical layout of the See Christmas Eve pg 2

Local Author from pg 1 the years passed, the author attended college, enlisted for reserve military service, married, and began a teaching career. By 1989, Moore had completed much of the manuscript, but the first book in the series was not published until 2011. Asked how he came to receive the award, Moore leaned back and said, “That is an interesting story.” The story actually began in the 1980s, when Moore offered some photographs to Paul Sanborn, who was then a historian with the Freedoms Foundation. At the same time, he showed Sanborn the manuscript for “Journey Into Darkness.” “(Sanborn) thought it looked interesting,” said Moore, who in February of 1989 received a letter from Sanborn saying he had nominated Moore for the award. Moore kept a copy of the letter, but he never heard any more about the award. In 2017, Moore tried to contact Sanborn, wanting to show him the published work. He spoke with a representative of the Freedoms Foundation named Kevin Ferris. Ferris was unable to connect Moore with Sanborn, but he did give Moore information on how to submit an application for consideration for the award. On Dec. 17, 2018, Moore submitted his work in the public communications category of the Freedoms Foundation National Awards program. The entry included a one-page summary and several supporting documents, which could be letters of commendation, photographs, news clippings, or a supporting video. Included with Moore’s submission was a note of commendation from Lloyd Alexander, author of “The Black Cauldron.” “(Alexander) lived in the area where I was teaching when I taught at The Episcopal Academy’s Devon campus,” explained Moore, who visited Alexander with his students. Moore also shared his work with Alexander, who in December of 1989 sent Moore a letter noting how much he enjoyed the class visits and adding, “Best yet is your gift of the ‘Journey Into Darkness’ volumes. ... Now that I see the books all together, I … am enormously impressed.” Moore also included a letter from Jim Lighthizer, president of the Civil War Trust. Moore See Local Author pg 7

LOHF Awards Grant Funds LOHF (Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation) recently approved funding to four Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs. These programs impact young people who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants program is an important part of LOHF’s strategy to improve access to behavioral health support for youths and children locally. A grant of $8,300 was awarded to Bethany Christian Services’ Together
Facing the Challenge Project. The funds will train and engage 28 staff members from Bethany’s foster care and counseling departments in an evidence-based model for therapeutic foster care that takes a strengths-based educational approach with youths. This will prepare staff to train foster parents and additional staff. COBYS Family Services was awarded $14,081 for increasing child behavioral health services through the Supervision of Unlicensed Therapists program. The funds will provide licensure training and
supervision to two new therapists toward their professional licenses, allowing COBYS to expand behavioral health services to 40 more children per week. Mental Health America of Lancaster County was awarded $11,000 to partner with Teen Hope, a program of Samaritan Counseling Center. The partnership will expand its reach and provide mental health education to ninth- and 10thgrade students prior to screenings for depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. Milagro House was awarded $14,000 for Streamlining Behavioral Health Access: Supporting Women and Children Affected by Trauma and Poverty Initiative. The initiative is a partnership between Milagro House, Clare House, and Good Samaritan Services to restructure education programs serving mothers and children in these shelters, using a trauma-informed approach.
LOHF’s Children’s Behavioral Health Grants Program aims to elevate the mental well-being of youths and children by supporting local programs that help to answer one or both of two questions: How can we build the talent pipeline in behavioral health care for youths and children in Lancaster County? And how will we improve access to mental well-being for youths and children in Lancaster County? Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for individuals from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available. Applications for the spring grant cycle are due by Sunday, March 1, 2020. Tax-exempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org.

Local Author from pg 4 had originally contacted the trust concerning a historic site called Stones River National Battlefield located in Murfreesboro, Tenn. “Up From Corinth,” one of the books in the “Journey Into Darkness” series, describes the extremely difficult battle that began in that area on New Year’s Eve of 1862 in the pouring rain. “I sent him the excerpt (describing the battle),” said Moore. “(Lighthizer) wrote back that one of the key components of the Civil War Trust’s mission is to educate the public about the importance of battlefields in our nation’s history. “He said, ‘Your thoroughly researched and thoughtfully written series supplements this mission very well.’” Each June, Moore takes part in the Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. A young man named Paul Wunderlich works with him portraying 12-yearold Sgt. John Lincoln Clem to tell visitors the story of one of the boys of the war. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, noting that offering dignity, hope, and healing is part of the mission’s values. “(At Providence), guests will have (access to) calmness and peace and achieve restoration and equity in their lives.” The importance of treating people with dignity and respect was emphasized numerous times throughout the ceremony, as well as during tours of the facility afterward. For Water Street Mission leaders, that starts with clients’ first impressions as they enter the shelter and move throughout the venue. The front desk has the feel of a quality hotel, and the sleeping quarters will include numerous single cots. Gray manufactured plank floors run underfoot, and cream-colored walls surround the space. Vice president of programs Colleen Adams pointed out that the sconce lighting was designed to dim as the lights-out time of 10 p.m. approaches. Smaller lights ring the floor so 2790 Lincoln Hwy. E. For more information, readers may email volunteer coordinator Heather Ross at hross@wsm.org. Since 1905, Water Street Mission has aimed to provide an environment of hope and healing where at-risk men, women, and children in Lancaster County can find a hand-up and restoration with God. The facility also includes respite rooms for those who need downtime before sleeping, indoor storage for personal belongings, fewer bunk beds and more single beds to improve personal space, and a hotbox room where guests can have their belongings heat-treated to reduce the possibility of insects and germs. “We want the layout, design, and feel of the space to communicate dignity and value to each guest,” said Water Street Mission president Jack Crowley. “We want our guests to know that God cares for them and they are worthy of love and respect. We believe that an environment that communicates dignity is an important first step to building trust and beginning the process of restoration through the other programs and support offered at Water Street.” The new facility’s name reflects Water Street Mission’s belief that God provides and protects. “Thinking ahead - whether hours, days, or months - is impossible when you’re experiencing homelessness,” Crowley said. “When they come here … they can think about their future.” LanCo MyHome director Jennifer Koppel commented that she is happy to see Providence open. “The Lancaster County Homeless Coalition is only as strong as its partners,” she said.

In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. Pour apricot mixture over brie and serve immediately. For more recipes visit www.goldenbarrel.com.

who added that most of the questions she answered involved laptop, phone, tablet, or software issues. “Because this typically (did) not take all of the allotted time, I often got to hear stories about the seniors’ lives.” Over the years that Alyssa was involved with the program, she gained insight and developed characteristics from which she still benefits. “The one major takeaway I had from working with the seniors is patience,” she said. “I went in expecting to just answer technology questions, but quickly realized there was so much more to intergenerational communication, (which) is something that can benefit everyone involved.” Schweitzer said that she advertises the Saturday morning clinics, and residents call her to set up a 15-minute to a half-hour appointment in the StoneCroft Center at Tel Hai. Students visit the campus a few times a month from October to May, depending on the needs of the seniors. She said that the seniors have responded positively to the program and that the students who help them have been mature and responsible. Alyssa found taking part in the program rewarding. “If I had the opportunity, I would love to continue doing something like this. I enjoy working with the seniors and using my talents to better the community,” she said. Tel Hai is located 3 miles east of Route 10 off Beaver Dam Road in Honey Brook. with Tel Hai. “(Some residents) have problems with their equipment, and they don’t have an IT department (to turn to). They have to figure out a lot of this on their own.” Tel Hai connected with members of the PVHS technology support program called Apple Core. PVHS students who are part of Apple Core are trained to troubleshoot computer issues in a variety of devices. Now in college, Alyssa Yoder, then a PVHS sophomore, was introduced to helping the Tel Hai residents through a friend. “I would volunteer on Saturdays … and I became very comfortable working with the residents,” Alyssa relayed. When her friend graduated, Alyssa took over the program, which is now in the hands of her younger sister Megan, a PVHS junior. On Nov. 16, two Apple Core members - Megan along with Bailey Henshaw - were at Tel Hai to help Judy Ewald and Dorothy Stein with their devices. Stein had a few questions concerning transferring data and deleting items to preserve storage space. “I don’t want to delete something I might need,” she stated. Stein said she uses search engines and email daily and spends some time on social media sites. Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for LMHS and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. From the tournament and other donations, the endowment has received almost $50,000. Funds are used to provide scholarships to immigrant and refugee children at the school. Play during the tournament is “Glen-style,” which means there are no officials. Glen-style play will be explained to the teams prior to each tournament. Registration for the tournament is now open, and those interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up soon as the spaces for teams fill up quickly. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit https://glen lappvolleyball.weebly.com/event -details.html. Pictured on front: Lancaster

death and honors the life of Glen Lapp, a 1987 LMHS graduate and one of the school’s 2019 Alumni of the Year. The event benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, who was a nurse, had first traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International Assistance Mission. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. He later completed a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse. He worked at Lancaster Regional Hospital and for the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. The tournament is organized by

LCPN Sets Dinner Distribution The 33rd annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner distribution will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The distribution will begin at 8 a.m. The project will distribute more than an estimated 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. No pre-screening is required. In addition to the distribution at the stadium, LCPN will partner with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank to provide meals to families in designated areas. Hot beverages and food will be handed out to the recipients by the Lancaster County Coalition to End Homelessness. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for more than two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is a nonprofit group, relying solely on public donations and volunteers. All are welcome to lend a hand. The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps recently kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign, the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraising event. The campaign will end on Tuesday, Dec. 24. Proceeds will go toward providing food, toys and winter wear for more than 6,000 individuals from the greater Lancaster area in the Christmas season, as well as supporting Salvation Army programs throughout the year, according to Maj. Dean Satterlee, commanding officer. So far this season, the organization has assisted more than 4,100 people, including 1,900 children. This year, the Salvation Army has set a fundraising goal of $165,000. However, due to many contributing factors, including a decreased number of locations, organizers recognize that meeting that goal may be difficult. Community members and businesses are encouraged to support the effort, which will benefit those in need in the local area. Community members are invited not only to support the campaign financially, but also to volunteer their time to receive donations at kettles. Groups from businesses, churches, nonprofits and
