Ninth Glen Lapp Volleyball Tournament Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash

John Denlinger, advancement associate with Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), feels that the annual volleyball tournament that benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid is unique. “We organize the tournament ‘Glen-style,’” said Denlinger. “(Glen Lapp) was so laid-back and relaxed.” “Glen-style” means there are no officials. “Everybody calls their own game,” explained Denlinger. “If they touch the net, they make their own call. If it’s out, you make your call. That’s how Glen would have wanted it.” Denlinger added that the Glen-style play is explained to the teams prior to each tournament. This year’s fundraiser will be held on Saturdays, Jan. 5 and 12, 2019, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.

The tournament will be divided into two divisions. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 5, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 12. A maximum of 20 teams will play in each division. The tournament is organized by Mark Leaman and Kevin Groff, with help from Glen’s cousin Joel Lapp. Leaman and Groff played volleyball for Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) and were coached by Glen in 1992 and 1993. The initial tournament held in Glen’s honor was organized by his cousin Tim Lapp. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Glen, a nurse, traveled to Afghanistan in October 2008 through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in partnership with International See Volleyball Fundraiser pg 3

It began with a conversation about foster care, and it blossomed into a church bake sale that raised more than $1,000 to help provide presents for Christ’s Home in Paradise. Zephaniah Doutrich, age 8, son of Eric and Nykiah Doutrich of Bowmansville, spearheaded the effort. On Nov. 4, Zephaniah and his family brought a large number of baked goods with them to church at Bethany Grace Fellowship, 400 Reading Road, East Earl, ready to sell them to attendees by donation to raise funds for Christ’s Home for Christmas presents. The sale raised $1,033, which was combined with See Bake Sale pg 6

began the endowment, which - in honor of Glen’s work overseas - is used to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The fund supports need-based scholarships that enable students to receive an education at LMS. Since it began, the volleyball tournament has raised $50,000 for the fund. Denlinger noted that the tournament, which started with family and friends of Glen, has grown over the years and that last year, a few teams had to be turned away. This year, MCC, which still has a presence in Afghanistan, will have a display at both events that will include photos of Glen and testimonials. Representatives will be with the display to answer questions. Readers who wish to learn more about the tournament may visit http://glenlappvolleyball .weebly.com. Assistance Mission. Eye care is a pressing need in Afghanistan. To reach the village where the clinic was held, members of the group first flew, then drove, and then walked, packing their equipment on hired horses. Before becoming a nurse, Glen attended Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), where he played volleyball and earned a degree in math. Following graduation from EMU, Glen was not quite sure what he wanted to do next. He worked as the dorm supervisor at LMHS and coached volleyball. Eventually, he decided to become a nurse, completing a Johns Hopkins accelerated course to become a registered nurse in one year. During his adult life, Glen lived in six states, serving people from all walks of life as a registered nurse working at Lancaster Regional Hospital and with the Traveling Nurses Association, which took him to New York City and Oregon. He also worked in a government clinic on a Native American reserve in Supai, Ariz. In December of 2011, LMS

Dog Park from pg 1

Mozzarella Cheese Hatfield 3 Lb. Hams 30 Lb. Case

24" Starting at

Area residents may give a unique gift and support the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA) by purchasing a personalized brick for the borough’s dog park. Bricks can be engraved with the buyer’s name, a favorite pet’s name or a slogan. Bricks will be included in the paving of the dog park vestibule in the spring. To be sure everyone has a chance to get their order in, brick sales have been extended to Monday, Dec. 31. Earlier this year, the new dog park opened at the Oxford Area Regional Park, 900 W. Locust St., Oxford. The park has sections for small and large dogs, interesting obstacles for canines to explore and raised bed gardens in the secure vestibule. To provide solid footing, the entrance area will be bricked this spring when weather permits. To cover the cost of the project and continuing maintenance costs related to the dog park, OARA is offering everyone a chance to purchase the personalized bricks that will be included in the paving. Each standard-sized brick can be engraved with a message up to four lines of print, with each line containing up to 21 characters, including spaces. Organizers note that the bricks could be a nice memorial for a well-loved person or pet. They can also be a sign of love and support to the living, a recognition of a personal accomplishment or a communication of any kind of personal message. Larger, double-size bricks are also being offered. They are designed for businesses and organizations and may include up to six lines of a message and/or a logo. To order a brick, readers may visit www.facebook.com/RecAuthority or www.bricksrus.com/donorsite/oaradog park. Order forms are also available at the Oxford Public Library, 48 S. Second St., Oxford, and at local businesses. OARA reserves the right to refuse any message it considers inappropriate.

W hen Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to support local veterans, they had no idea how far-reaching the event would grow to be. “We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 11 riders in year one has grown to more than 450 participants. Some folks travel from as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Poconos, and Philipsburg for the ride, and each year a prize is given to the rider who wins the Long Distance Award for making the longest trek to participate. Perhaps a less-coveted prize is that of being named Baby New Year. Each year, one lucky - or possibly unlucky designee rides the entire first chilly mile dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown

resident Larry Witters will have the honor of serving as Baby New Year for 2019. The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately

25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees may also bid on items at a Chinese auction, including motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more. Stumpf and Hecht said that in the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds

raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark. Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. For more information, readers may call Stumpf at 717-4686197 or Hecht at 717-283-6379.

sister, and he set up a table for a yard sale (because) he wanted to sell his toys,” said Nykiah. “He came in, and he said that he prayed for God to send people to buy his toys, but no one came.” Nykiah turned the occurrence into a teaching moment by explaining how to advertise a yard sale, but she was curious. “I said, ‘Oh, sweetie, why are you selling your toys?’” Zephaniah responded, “I want to buy toys for other children.” From there, the family decided to search for area organization that support children in need. Nykiah explained that it was important to Zephaniah to make contact with the home. “He wanted to physically buy the toys

and go in there and drop them off,” she said “Christ’s Home in Paradise was one of the few homes that would allow us to do that.” In late August, the family held a special Honk for Foster Care at their home. “People honked and received fresh lemonade by donation,” said Nykiah. The event raised $23 and spurred Zephaniah forward toward organizing the bake sale. In the fall, Zephaniah approached Bethany Grace pastor Adam Nagle. “I told him I wanted to do a bake sale,” said Zephaniah. Nagle responded positively to the idea. “I love encouraging (children) to dream of the difference they can make,”

said Nagle. “I’ll serve and stand with any (child) whose heart is captured by a cause and (who has) a plan to do something about it. I was thrilled to help him make this happen.” Nagle explained that Nov. 4 was chosen to hold the bake sale because it was National Orphan Sunday, which aims to draw attention to foster care and adoption concerns. On that day, Zephaniah joined Nagle at the front of the church to announce the fundraiser. The Doutrich family came to the church that day with loads of baked goods for attendees to purchase by donation. “My mom helped me bake some cookies, pumpkin bread, brownies, and gluten-free cookies,” said Zephaniah. Nykiah reported that the family prepared 30 loaves of pumpkin bread, three batches of brownies, and about 250 cookies, including monster cookies. Zephaniah explained that monster cookies have colored chocolate candies in them. All the items the family planned to sell had sold out by the end of the second service. A representative of Christ’s Home provided the family with a list of needs for the children and the cottages. “They have nine children there ages 6 to 20,” said Nykiah, who added that the toys were purchased and taken to Christ’s Home by Dec. 10. “We thought (that this effort) was something small and that we were just being obedient to the Lord, but it just really took off,” said Nykiah of the response to the fundraiser and opportunity to purchase the gifts. “We are super happy about it.”

receipts from another fundraiser for a total of $1,056. Zephaniah’s first efforts to raise funds for children in foster care began in mid-summer after his parents told him and his siblings that they were interested in fostering children. “When we got into the foster care journey, our children wanted to know where (foster children) come from,” explained Nykiah. “We sat down briefly and told them some children come from homes where parents don’t have the resources to take care of them, and that’s what sparked him.” Zephaniah’s concern for children in foster care quickly moved him to action. “One Saturday, he was out with his little

“Birdie,” which has more than 30 members in the cast, is the story of Conrad Birdie, a singer and teenage heartthrob, played by Brayden Krikke, who is drafted into the Army. His agent, Albert Peterson, played by Richard Thomas, and Peterson’s secretary and love interest, Rosie Alvarez, played by Rachel Wiles, concoct a scheme to turn the situation into a publicity coup by planning to have Birdie sing one final song to a female member of his fan club, accompanied by a “last kiss.” The song and subsequent pucker are to take place on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Enter teenager Kim MacAfee, played by Brianna Brady, who wins the competition. “Birdie,” which is based loosely on Elvis Presley’s induction into the Army, is set in the late 1950s. “It’s between poodle skirts and the hippie movement,” said Grayberg. “We’re trying to get in the reality of it,” she added, stating that there is a challenge in humanizing the characters to encourage audience members to relate to them rather than making them over-the-top caricatures. “We want to personify the Elvis (character) as much as possible,” Grayberg said. Focusing on the tension between Rosie and Albert’s mother, Mae, played by Rachel Allen, Grayberg also hopes to showcase the role of the young Hispanic woman. “Rosie is extremely Americanized and a strong character. She is very much the progressive woman of that time period. It will be interesting to play (up) the relationship between her and (Albert’s) mother,” she said. While Grayberg’s directing vision calls for making the roles more realistic, her plans for the choreography of the show are to make it larger-than-life. Grayberg is also working to emphasize the musical selections. “It will be overdanced,” said Grayberg. “It’s going to be big.” According to Grayberg, the production will challenge student actors in a variety of ways. “The song ‘Put on a Happy Face’ will be explosive with dance,” said the director, who hopes to add some juggling into the number. “Honestly Sincere” will be another standout. “You can’t help but dance and move and groove to it,” said Grayberg, who added that songs from the 1995 film will be included. “They give the character of Rosie a little more dimension,” she said, adding that she hopes audience members will find themselves humming the tunes on the way out. To keep the show moving continuously, the set will be a house that separates and turns around to create different geometric shapes. “It will complement the talent and let the talent be in the forefront,” said Grayberg. The set will allow for scene changes to remain fluid. “I hope to have no blackouts at all,” said Grayberg, who plans to choreograph set changes. “It will feel like a consistent piece of art.” Grayberg praised the cast members, most of whom are part of the school’s musical theater program. “Our students are now working professionally out in the community, and the caliber of our shows will get better because of that,” said Grayberg. “They are becoming true career professionals.” Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Tickets may also be purchased at the LBC box office in the Good Shepherd Chapel on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

Ringing In The New Year With Father Time

The National Watch and Clock Museum in Columbia will host New Year’s at Noon, a daytime celebration for children and families, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 31. A countdown to noon will feature a balloon drop in the museum lobby. By Chelsea Peifer

Music, mascots, crafts, games, and a cascade of balloons are just a few of the fun things planned for New Year’s Eve at Noon at the National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia. Children and families are invited to ring in 2019 - just a dozen hours early with Father Time at the fourth annual celebration, set to take place at the museum from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31.

“This is a fun event geared toward kids and their families,” said Abby Krouse, museum admissions and store manager. “There are lots of activities, and everyone always enjoys the countdown and balloon drop at 12 o’clock, which for our event is noon (instead of midnight).” Joining in the festivities will be local mascots, including Father Time, who will lead a dance party together with disc jockey Stevie. Children will have the opportunity to make and wear hats crafted
