Burns Night To Celebrate All Things Scottish BY FRANCINE FULTON
Burns Night, an evening to recognize the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Historic Beale Manor in Parkesburg. The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian
Foundation will host the event. Burns was the national poet of Scotland, and wrote lyrics and songs in both Scots and English. He is best known for writing the words to “Auld Lang Syne,” which has become associated with New Year’s Eve. See Burns Night pg 2

arlier this month, four Solanco High School (SHS) singers participated in the 2022 LancasterLebanon Music Educators Association (LLMEA) County Chorus Festival at Annville-Cleona High School. The festival was the first LLMEA event since the early winter of 2020. Students from 24 high schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties participated in the event. The 2021-22 audition process was different than years prior. Students were chosen for the ensemble based on their audition for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Chorus Festival and a round-robin process. Precautions were taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but students were still able to enjoy a full day rehearsing with guest conductor Joy
and it definitely made it better.” “It was a wonderful experience,” said Cassandra. “It was really cool to have a whole bunch of talented singers come together to create a concert.” Cassandra’s successful audition earned her a spot in the 2022 PMEA District 7 Festival, which will be held at Chambersburg Area High School on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12. At that festival, Cassandra will work with about 150 singers from eight central Pennsylvania counties and guest conductor Brandon Williams from Rutgers University. She will also audition for the PMEA Region 5 Festival. “They’re incredible human beings already, but when they really work hard, they can do really amazing things,” said Biles. According to SHS choral director and music teacher Erin Biles, the students sang more professional and challenging pieces than what they normally perform in school chorus. “It was really nice to meet people from other schools, sing with their groups, and listen to what their experiences were like,” noted Sawyer. “And to have all that power of your sections behind you … it’s really powerful,” commented AJ. “I’m a really shy person, so I was really anxious about not sitting next to my fellow classmates,” stated Lilia. “I did talk to other people, so I did get out of my comfort zone,

Burns Night will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social time featuring piper Thompson McConnell and a welcome by the host. A traditional haggis ceremony will follow, ending with a toast of scotch. Haggis, a traditional Scottish dish, is a type of savory pudding that is made from sheep mixed with beef, oatmeal and seasonings. “They call it the pluck of the sheep; it’s the heart, liver and lungs,” explained Donna McCool, foundation treasurer. “Robert Burns wrote a poem (called) ‘Address to a Haggis’ and January is his birthday month so it became a big celebration this time of year. Some people will try (the haggis) because they are (at the event); some people enjoy it.” In addition to the haggis, the homemade supper will

Harpist Kendrah Absher will perform during social time and during the supper. After supper, guests will be invited to honor the life of Burns with speeches, readings and toasts. Local musician Charlie Zahm will present “A Tribute to Robert Burns.” Guests will be invited to gather around the piano to sing Burns’ songs, including the classic “Auld Lang Syne,” which will conclude the evening. Visitors are encouraged to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their tartans, but it is not required. The annual Burns Night is a fundraising event to help maintain and preserve historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. Although it is no longer used for regular services, the historic
building is open for special events, including the foundation’s annual Scottish Festival in September. More details about this year’s festival are available at www.covenanter scottishfestival.com. “A lot of people have Scottish or Scotch-Irish roots. The church has Scottish roots (so) fundraisers are Scottish oriented like our festival each year,” McCool noted. She added that while Burns Night is targeted to the Scottish, it is open to people of all nationalities. “(Burns Night) a unique event in this area that can be fun for anyone,” she said. Historic Beale Manor is located at 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg. Burns Night is an adults-only event. Tickets must be purchased by Monday, Jan. 31. For more information and a link to purchase tickets, visit www.facebook.com/ CovenanterChurch and choose Events or visit www.evenbrite.com and search for “Burns Night at Historic Beale Manor 2022.” Information is also available by contacting McCool at 610593-6989.

Enter Trent McDowell. Saddled with three first half fouls and well rested, McDowell hit back-to-back treys and followed with a layup, while Austin Wenger hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to 35-29 with 2:20 left in the quarter. Catholic had the last say, however, and finished the third frame on top, 39-29. With a balanced effort in the fourth quarter, Solanco quietly rallied. On the road last Tuesday, Jan. 18, a 21-2 third quarter deficit put Solanco in a 52-18 hole against Elco. They did, however, buckle down in the fourth, outscoring the hosts 16-14 but it wasn’t enough in a 66-34 loss. “Elco has some size and some good shooters,” said Long. “We have had multiple games where we played great for one half. We must put two halves together to pick up some wins here down the stretch.” Noah Baber led the Mules with 11 points. I don’t think the score reflected how we competed. This opened up some of our weaknesses so now we know what techniques we need to work on in order to improve overall.” Hempfield opened with a fall at 106 but the Mules came back with a fall by Nathan Smith (113) and a 3-0 decision by Weston Bare (120). The hosts went back in front with a fall at 126 only to see Solanco match that effort with Jared Fulton’s fall at 132. The 15-12 lead was the last of the night for the Mules as Hempfield won three of the next four bouts, two by fall and one major. Blaine Plastino’s double overtime win over Grant Hoover cut the lead to 34-18. The Knights capped the action with a tech fall and two pins. “Blaine’s win was big,” praised Mendez. “And Nathan came up with a big win too. The Crusaders, undefeated in league play, improved to 10-3 overall with a 51-31 win. turnovers, however, led to some easy transition points, especially in the first half.” Solanco doubled its offensive output in the second quarter, held the Crusaders to 13 and looked at a 29-12 halftime deficit. The hosts put together their best quarter of the half after the break. Jenna Ehlers netted all seven of her points in the third and Josie Janssen chipped in with four as Solanco outscored Catholic High 13-9. That momentum however, stalled in the fourth frame and the Crusaders pulled away for good. “We made some adjustments in our defense, created some steals and got some easy transition points,” explained McDowell of the turnaround. “They switched to a 3-2 trapping zone, and we executed well. We cut the lead to nine points late in the quarter.” For the game, Solanco attempted 24 free throws but converted just eight. The visitors were 11-for-17. “When you play a team like Lancaster Catholic you have to take
advantage of the free points,” said McDowell. “We make half of what we missed and it’s a different game. “We were a little shorthanded again with some injuries and quarantine situations,” he continued. “But everyone that stepped on the court contributed.” Ehlers added nine rebounds to go with her team high seven points. Kendal Janssen led with 11 rebounds, dished out two assists, grabbed a pair of steals and scored five points along with Sarah Landis. Olivia Lasko (9 rebounds), J. Janssen (2 steals) and Kara Peace (5 rebounds) all added four points each. A hot shooting Elco Raiders’ team rode a 30-4 first half lead to a 46-20 victory at Solanco last Tuesday. “It seemed like everything they shot went in,” said McDowell. “We did a much better job in the second half with each team scoring 16 points. We still need to find a way to put together four consistent quarters.” Lasko led the way in points and rebounds with six and five, respectively.

Nine-year-old Parker Millhouse was born without a leg. Despite missing his right leg, Parker lives each day with a positive spirit and enjoys climbing rock walls as well as playing on the neighbor’s trampoline. He is also the inspiration and driving force behind Iron-Leg Corp, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help children and youths age 18 and younger obtain advanced prosthetics and receive therapy to learn how to use them. The organization, created by president Matthew Millhouse and vice president Sean Laukhuff, became an official 501(c)(3) in April 2021. The board of IronLeg Corp. has grown since then, adding treasurer Mike Canarelli, secretary Darren Hershock and board members Matt York, Bill Coder, Andrea Schopf, and Josh Holland. In September 2021, Iron-Leg Corp. hosted a golf outing as its first fundraiser. The organization raised $38,000 at the event, and from that, the organization was able to support and fund the purchase of a TrueLimb prosthetic hand from Unlimited Tomorrow for a 11-year-old boy named Shawn who lives in York.

up a shop just north of Lititz borough and later opening Kirsch Antiques on Broad Street in Lititz. Around 2009, Larry was involved in a motorcycle accident and sustained a severe head trauma. Kirsch reported that the head injury did not change Larry’s even-keeled personality or his strong will, but it did make it impossible to continue auctioneering, which upset his uncle. In the fall of 2021, Larry was diagnosed with cancer shortly before he died. His memorial service was held on Jan. 15 at Union Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood. Kirsch is in the process of auctioning Larry’s collections through Timeless Treasure Auctions, located at 20 Copperfield Circle, Lititz. The next auction will be held on Saturday, Jan. 29, beginning at 9 a.m. More information about Larry’s collections may be found at www.timeless treasureauctions.net.

Larry first began auctioneering in the early 1980s, apprenticing for two years before starting his own auction company. In 1986, he volunteered his auctioneering services for Hospice & Community Care’s annual Labor Day Auction, and he was involved in starting the Southern End Community Association (SECA) and with auctions to help fund Solid Rock Youth Ministries and other local organizations. He also donated his auctioneering talents to the Bart, Rawlinsville, and Robert Fulton mud sales. Along the way, Larry collected a variety of items, including Eldreth pottery, Depression glass, enamel vases, banks, and Victorian furniture. He owned one of the most extensive collections of Black Americana in the country, including a baseball mitt autographed by about a dozen Negro League Baseball players. Larry wed Kirsch’s mother’s sister, Barbara, in 1976, and they were married 45 years before he died. Larry and Barbara knew each other as children growing up in Oxford. “(Larry) was racing 1957 Chevys across the milelong Octorara Lake bridge (when they met as adults),” said Kirsch. Kirsch grew up taking part in auctions his uncle held. “We were very family centric, so I just started helping him,” recalled Kirsch, who went into the antiques business with Larry in 2011, first setting

Local Author To Give Presentation Nancy Bieber, a local writer, spiritual director and retired psychologist, will present a program, “The Faithful Life of Fianna Bucher Meyer,” in the sanctuary at Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. The program is part of the church’s 125th anniversary year events. The public is invited to attend. Bieber will share the adventure of learning about her grandmother Fianna Bucher Meyer through letters that had been hidden in an attic for many years. In her recently published book, “Fianna’s Story: A True Story of Love, Grief and Faith,” Bieber presents her grandmother as a devout Brethren woman in the early 1900s. Meyer, at age 10, was among the first people to be baptized in the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, and she retained her faith until her death at age 28. She was survived by her husband and two small children. Meyer also left behind a large packet of letters describing the life of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren and life in her home, as well as her experiences as an early student at Elizabethtown College and as a patient in a tuberculosis sanatorium.

A new year means a chance to refocus when it comes to the meals that people and their families are enjoying around the table. The Giant Company’s team of dietitians is ready with plenty of virtual nutrition classes to help home cooks bring more balance in January and ideas to show their heart some extra love in February. All nutrition classes are offered free and live via Zoom. On Mondays at 10:30 a.m., mini chefs age 6 and younger will enjoy a story and create nourishing snacks from polar bear toast to love bug fruit cups and penguin bagels. Families are invited to gather together in the kitchen for some baking fun on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. January classes will feature “Frozen” fun with Olaf personal pizzas and Elsa’s frozen blueberry cookies. In February, cooks can bake up red velvet sugar cookies and quick homemade pretzels. The Giant Company dietitians are also offering wellness workshops every Monday at 7 p.m. and Healthy Choices for Weight Control classes on Wednesdays at noon. Classes also include “Better for You” baking on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Attendees will learn how to prepare mango muffins with coconut lime streusel and lemon blueberry coffee cake. To help families on those busy nights, the dietitians will offer freezer meal prep classes on Thursdays at noon. Recipes will include Greek pasta bake and teriyaki beef and broccoli. February is Heart Month and the dietitians at the Giant Company have classes scheduled throughout the month. On Mondays at 7 p.m. participants can learn more about heart health and how sodium, fiber and fats can all play a role. “Love your Spuds” will take place every Tuesday at noon with recipes for sweet potato burgers and kale and potato mash with feta. The dietitians can also help with adding nutrients to the family’s pantry with suggestions for cooking with canned goods, dried beans and global grains. All classes are free to attend, but advance registration is required for each class at www.thegiantcompanynutrition ists.eventbrite.com. A complete listing of all the Giant Company’s virtual nutrition classes and the ingredients needed for each class are also available on the event page. In addition, customers can earn 50 CHOICE Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and attend the entire nutrition class.
