Oh, The Solanco Musical Is The Place To Go! BY COURTNEY MENGEL

orton hears a what? Why is the Cat in the Hat talking about Horton sitting on an abandoned egg? What’s going on here? For the first time since 2019, Solanco High School (SHS) will open its doors to paying audience members for its spring musical, “Seussical.” Narrated by the Cat in the Hat, this imaginative and

There are 33 additional cast members, with John Biles as director, senior Haleigh Bauer as assistant director, sophomore Michael Eisenberger as the student stage manager, and sophomore Lucia Eden as the assistant student stage manager. “After everything that’s been

exciting family-friendly adventure takes the audience through wellknown Dr. Seuss stories, including “Horton Hatches the Egg,” “Gertrude McFuzz,” and “Horton Hears a Who!” Written by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, “Seussical” was a Broadway spectacle in the 2000-01 season and completed a national tour beginning in 2002. The cast features senior Lilia McHugh as the enigmatic Cat in the Hat, senior Aden “AJ” Jackson as

happening the last two years, I feel like this is a really good musical to get the community back together and get people interested and excited to see what’s going on,” said Samantha. “Everyone has that connection to Dr. Seuss, so I think it will really resonate with everyone no matter how old they are and they will enjoy watching it.” “People are so familiar with Horton and the Cat in the Hat, so I think it will give people a sense of normalcy within these COVID times where everything is crazy,” stated Lilia. “And, for the little kids, it’s going to be awesome to see the books come to life.” Live performances of “Seussical” will run from Thursday, March 3, to Saturday, March 5, with shows beginning at 7 p.m. in the SHS auditorium, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville. To help celebrate the works of Dr. Seuss and to encourage families across the community to come see the show, the performance on March 3 is designated as Family Night. Special concessions and activities will be available before the show and during intermission free of charge. Audience members of all ages will get the opportunity to meet a few of the characters for pictures and autographs after the show. “It’s a show that encourages us to be the best people we can be,” explained Biles. “Horton has a line in the show, ‘A person’s a person no matter how small.’” He continued, “We’re all people, and no matter where our differences lie, we always have that in common. Horton treats people that he can’t even see with dignity, and I think by extension, that’s definitely something that we should be celebrating amongst ourselves. I think it’s a show that’s going to bring joy to us and that reminder that we’re all in this together on our own tiny little planet.” Tickets for “Seussical” can be prepurchased by visiting www.showtix4u .com/event-details/60376.

With a new year come new goals, plans, and sometimes even opportunities. This statement has proved true for Wayne Breneman II, the new director of the Southern End Community Association (SECA). Wayne grew up in Lancaster County, graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School, received his Master of Education in sport management from Millersville University, and currently resides in West Lampeter Township with his wife, Taryn. He remembers visiting Solanco quite often during his time as a high school student because many of his friends lived there, and when he discovered that the position of director of SECA had become vacant, he decided to apply. If you live in the Solanco area, then you are probably familiar with SECA, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. SECA’s mission is to create recreational opportunities for residents of the Southern End by providing high-value programs for children and adults. See SECA pg 5

SECA from pg 1 Wayne knew about SECA because he had participated in several events hosted by the association, and he knew he wanted to apply for the job because he was interested in a local community recreation position. Before joining SECA, Wayne worked for the Strasburg Borough in the public works department as a public works operator, and prior to that, he was employed by the Lampeter-Strasburg Recre-

Wayne Breneman II

ation Commission, which later merged with the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA. “I’m interested in being part of a community association that offers numerous events and programs that are aiming to improve the mental and physical well-being of the community,” said Wayne. “I see the Southern End as a tight-knit, caring community. There are numerous very hard-working individuals and small businesses who work together to make the Southern End go ’round.” As director of SECA, Wayne hopes to maintain current events and programs in addition to introducing some “learn to play” sports clinics, outdoor classes, and a variety of workshops. Wayne noted that he wants to work with the community to improve some of the facilities on-site

and ensure SECA is reaching out to and offering something for people of all ages. “I see SECA as an asset to the community,” explained Wayne. “Between the pool, pond, open space, facilities, and building, it seems like something is always going on. It’s a place where people can come and enjoy themselves, whether it’s participating in a program, utilizing our facilities, or simply enjoying the outdoors while walking around the grounds.” SECA has some events planned for the spring, including a St. Patrick’s Day Money Party on Saturday, March 12, and an adult Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 16. The Youth Flag Football league will start in March, and pool passes are currently on sale for the upcoming season. For more information, visit www.secarec.org or search for “Southern End Community Association” on Facebook.

Fulton Wins L-L Crown, Four Others Medal

Solanco’s matmen opened their post-season at the LancasterLebanon League Championships held January 28-29 at Manheim Township. They had five medal winners, including Jared Fulton’s gold medal effort, and finished tied for sixth place with Manheim Central. Fulton secured his first league crown by pinning his way through

the 132-pound bracket. By doing so, the junior also earned the Shorty Hitchcock Award for most falls in the least amount of time. Fulton spent just six minutes and 14 seconds on the mat. Joining Fulton on the medal stand was Weston Bare, Robert Castagna, Caden Rutt, and Justin McCauley. Bare, a senior, was the runner-up at 120. He advanced to the finals with a fall, a tech fall and a 3-0 decision but met up with undefeated Eric Howe (Lancaster Catholic) in the finals and dropped a 9-1 result. Castagna (189) suffered a 7-1 loss in the semifinals but rallied back to finish in fifth place while Rutt claimed sixth at 106 and McCauley settled for seventh place. Rutt pinned Penn Manor’s Riley Evans in his first match but, after losing in the quarterfinals, wrestled back, and met Evans again in the battle for fifth. This time Evans had the upper hand, winning via fall. “Justin stepped in for Ben Williams (injured) and did a nice job to come away in seventh place,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “All of our guys placed at or above their seed.”

Also of note, Solanco’s Ronnie Perry, currently an assistant men’s wrestling coach and the head women’s coach at Lock Haven University, was inducted into the L-L League Hall of Fame. Last Tuesday the Mules traveled to Dallastown to face the secondseed Wildcats in the District Three Team Tournament. It is the fourth straight season the Mules have qualified, but seeded 15th made it an uphill battle. Dallastown prevailed 41-18. Castagna, with a 4-1 decision, Nathan Smith with a fall at 113, Bare, with a 2-1 decision and Fulton’s forfeit at 132 accounted for Solanco’s point total. “We knew it would be a challenge, but it was a good experience,” said Mendez. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With just one win to their credit, the girls’ basketball team will look to play spoiler as the end of the season approaches. With that goal in mind, Solanco hosted LampeterStrasburg Thursday, January 27. The Pioneers are in contention for a Section Three title and though they finished with a 47-34 victory, it was not a walk in the park.

Clinging to a 5-3 lead early, L-S ran off seven straight points and then banked a three at the buzzer for a 15-6 advantage. They led 22-10 midway through the second and led 30-14 at the half. Solanco kept at it though, diving for loose balls, double teaming and hitting the boards. They won the second half 20-17 but fell short of the upset. “We’re getting the looks we want but just recently we have missed a bunch of short shots,” stated head coach Chad McDowell. “We just need to finish. “No matter what the score, this team plays hard for four quarters,” he continued. “This group never quits. I love that heart that they play with.” Olivia Lasko continues to make her presence known. She led with a game-high 14 points, scoring in each quarter, hauled in a team best seven rebounds and picked up a pair of steals. The scrappy Janssen sisters were all over the place, combining for 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals. Kara Peace (4 points), Hannah Wood (3 points) and Sarah Landis (2 points) also reached the scoring column. Lasko turned in a monster game last Tuesday, knocking down 18 points and controlling the boards with a dozen. She also dished out three assists and collected four steals in a tight 46-38 home loss to Cocalico. “Olivia came ready to play,” lauded McDowell. “I think that matched a career-high in points.” Clinging to an 11-10 first quarter lead, the Eagles stepped it up a bit over the next two frames to gain some breathing room, leading 3927 with eight minutes remaining. Solanco rallied down the stretch, outscoring the visitors 11-7 but it was too little, too late.

(left to right) Solanco’s Justin McCauley (7th), Robert Castagna (5th), Jarod Fulton (1st), Weston Bare (2nd) and Caden Rutt (6th) were placewinners at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships held at Manheim Township High School January 28-29.

Lasko fueled that first quarter hosted a two-win Solanco squad with eight of 18 while Hanna Wood Thursday, January 27. The mighty canned five of her seven in the third. Pioneers, without starting point “Hannah played an exceptional guard and leading scorer Ty Burton, game,” praised McDowell. “She bat- swept the series 85-27. tled Cocalico’s 6’2” center and did a See Sports pg 7 great job.” Aiding the Eagles attack was the ability to drop in nine treys. “That certainly helped them out,” said McDowell. “And I felt we contested the majority of those shots. To their credit they made them. “Paige Althoff did a great job defensively, forcing some turnovers,” he continued. “Jenna Ehlers was also a spark off the bench. Her quickness and leaping ability photo by Mona Steinhauer give us energy.” In a 47-34 Section Three loss to LampeterBOYS’ BASKETBALL Strasburg Thursday, Jan. 27, Solanco’s The only undefeated Paige Althoff looks to a teammate as the team in the L-L League Pioneers’ Jenna Daveler defends.

break. They held the Mules to just three points in the third. “I felt the three-point shooting made the difference,” said Long. “They hit some big shots and we struggled to score again.” Bailey was impressive from the free throw line, sinking 11 of 12 attempts in his team-high 13point night. Yoder hit three triples and also hit double figures with 11. Elijah Cunningham (6), Trent McDowell (2), Baber (2) and Brock Osborne (2) also scored. At Eastern York last Wednesday Solanco’s 14-13 first quarter lead did not last. Down 24-20 at the half, the hosts dominated the offensive boards in the third and canned six of their nine treys in the second half to win 62-42. Yoder scored 15 points on five threes. Osborne came off the bench with nine points. Cunningham and Baber combined for 15.

REAL ESTATE - NICE INVESTMENT PROPERTY OR YOUR HOME

With its beautiful cities, rich culture, incredible history, fascinating museums, and spectacular food, Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. After spending the first eight years of his life in Rome and serving as a chaplain at the Casa Materna orphanage in Naples for about four years after completing seminary, Robert “Bob” Bronkema realized how valuable it is to visit the country. Before becoming a pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg in 2011, Bronkema was the senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, Fla., from 1998 to 2006, and then moved to Russia, where he was the pastor at the Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy. At each church he has served, Bronkema has planned mission trips for high school students to travel to Naples. 2022 marks Bronkema’s eighth time leading a mission trip to Naples and third time planning a trip with the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. Nine youths, along with Bronkema, will leave on Wednesday, June 15, and return on Saturday, June 25. While abroad, the group will conduct a Bible school for the children of Imparare Gio-

The youths will divide into four designated groups to teach Bible stories, recreation, crafts, and music to the children. Bronkema noted that they are expecting to serve anywhere from 60 to 100 kids.

“We were down five rotation players going into that game,” said head coach Dave Long of his injured players. “Gavin Cox, Donnovan Peters, Trey Riley and Patrick Baus came in and played heavy minutes for us off the bench.” L-S, with all five starters hitting double figures, jumped out to a 20-5 first quarter lead, pushed it to 52-16 and the half, and held the visitors to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters for their f16th straight win. Jadon Yoder’s eight points led the Mules. Noah Baber followed with six, Noah Bailey and Riley added five each and Peters chipped in with three. Giant’s “Feeding School Kids” Initiative Returns The Giant Company recently announced the return of its “Feeding School Kids” initiative. Now through Monday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their Choice points into a donation for their local public schools’ food programs. Giant launched the initiative last year to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout local public school districts in the communities it serves. Together with its customers, the company raised more than $3.3 million in 2021. This year, the Giant Company will donate $250,000 to the program. Through the “Feeding School Kids” initiative, school districts have been able to use the funds to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs, creating on-campus food pantries and supplying extra weekend meals. For example, the School District of Lancaster scaled up its community garden initiative by implementing additional programming and providing fresh produce for more students and families. For more information on the “Feeding School Kids” initiative, visit www.giantfood stores.com, choose “Community” in the menu on the top left, and select “Changing Children’s Lives.”
