The toys were available to children in the hospital on Easter morning in 2021. The couple heard from a mother whose daughter was admitted the night before. “(The little girl) was worried that the Easter Bunny wasn’t going to find her,” said Leanne. The fundraiser was fun for people of all ages.
Quarryville Library’s Go-FORE Golf Is Tee-Rific ’ve lived in Lancaster County my entire life, but ever since I started my position as feature writer for the Solanco Advertiser, I have been blown away by the number of events, organizations, and locations that I had never even heard of. I attended the Solanco Fair for the first time, visited the
were set up throughout the library. Some hugged the sides of bookshelves while others were tucked away in corners. Some of the holes were sponsored and decorated by local businesses, which was super neat. People of all ages came out to enjoy a day of fun and support the library at the same time. I saw little kids pick on their parents for their lack of golf skills, grandparents cheer on their grandchildren, and teenagers scream with excitement after getting a holein-one. There was also a creative balloon artist and a talented face painter. After getting through the 16-hole course, each person had the chance to win a couple of Gopher Dollars by getting a holein-one on the 17th hole. The Gopher Dollars were redeemable at the 17th Hole Café. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I got a hole-in-one. See Go-FORE Golf pg 7
Several children had their faces painted at the event.

“(The mother) messaged us and said her daughter woke up with an Easter gift and that meant the world to her,” added Patrick. In April 2021, the ministry collected essential items for Water Street Mission, and in May it created gift bags to help encourage women who are clients of Clare House. Over
the summer, care packages were prepared for new patients of the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center, and in October, art supplies were collected for women being served by North Star Initiative. In addition, local artist Paris Llanso visited and taught an art class. Prior to Christmas 2021, the Buckners offered donors an opportunity to purchase bags of Christmas items, including devotionals and Patrick’s CD. The donors picked up the bags at an event held at Colerain Church. The gathering included a reception with food, games, and Christmas music. “We opened it up to the whole community,” said Patrick. The donors filled out invitations to include with the bags that asked the recipient to attend church with them. Since the arrival of 2022, the couple has collected hats, gloves, and scarves for those in need in the city of Lancaster and repeated the Valentine’s Day card effort for QPRC, but added Friendship Community to the recipients. The Buckers are also organizing an Easter toy drive for children at Penn State Hershey Medical Center through Thursday, March 31. “We are hoping to expand (the ministry),” said Leanne. “I want to always do more to reach out and proclaim the good news.” Patrick agreed. “We are bringing Jesus to the world,” he said. More information about the ministry may be found at www.unashamedministriespa.com. Readers who have questions or who would like information about dropping off donations for the toy drive may email unashamedministries pa@gmail.com or call 717-8476447 or 856-803-3517.

“We’ve never wanted to be the end, all be all,” explained LCP community liaison Deb Meckley. “Our job is to sort of get everybody connected so that we could do referrals in multiple directions and get people connected to the resources they need.” “I am thrilled to have a clothing bank nearby,” said Sharon Aukamp, director of Kitchen Cupboard. “I just can’t imagine how daunting it can be if you are desperately in need of something, and for them to overcome their pride to step out of their comfort zone. I just think it’s thrilling to have a network that we could say, ‘We can help you with that.’” For more information about LCP, visit www.loftcommunity partnership.org, email loftcp @gmail.com, call 717-723-8180, or search for “The Loft Community Partnership” on Facebook. LCP strives to partner with agencies within Lancaster County and help them to meet the needs of families within the district. After completing a needs assessment and discovering that there is a lack of transportation in the district, LCP searched for ways to bring resources to those who reside in the southern part of the Penn Manor area. Then along came a partnership with Martic Pantry, Kitchen Cupboard, and Bare Essentials. Martic Pantry, Kitchen Cupboard, and Bare Essentials are organizations that help those in need in different ways. Martic Pantry operates out of the same building as Martic Store, 561 Martic Heights Drive, Holtwood, and provides financial, medical, home, and vehicle maintenance services to residents of Martic Township who are experiencing hardship. One of the primary services Martic Pantry offers is providing food cards that can be used at the Martic Store. The recipients of these food cards can purchase the items they need as opposed to getting a prefilled box. Kitchen Cupboard and Bare Essentials are ministries within Mount Nebo United Methodist Church, 673 Martic Heights Drive, Pequea. Both ministries serve residents of the southern part of Penn Manor School District as well as those who live in Solanco School District. Bare Essentials provides socks and underwear to people of all ages while Kitchen Cupboard supplies nonfood items such as soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and gas cards. LCP currently has a clothing bank located in the basement of Martic Store that operates on the same schedule as Kitchen Cupboard and Bare Essentials, which is the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and the second Friday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “We’re trying to not duplicate something someone else has going on,” stated David Gochnauer, vice president of the Martic Pantry’s board of directors. “Let’s work together rather than all of us trying to do everything.”

Scott successfully defended her two league titles captured in 2021. The junior swam the first event on Saturday and clocked a winning 52.98 in the 100 freestyle, holding off Warwick junior Melanie Hahn (53.88) and Lampeter-Strasburg sophomore Zara Paisley (54.10). Three events later, Scott posted a winning 58.05 in the 100 backstroke. Hempfield junior Lilian Farmer was second with a 1:00.37. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Solanco hosted Penn Manor Monday, Feb. 14. Both teams were looking to pick up their third win of the season. Despite a solid first half and a fourth quarter rally, the Mules fell short, 58-54. “Our offense got a little stagnant in the third quarter and Penn Manor knocked down some shots,” said head coach Dave Long. “We fought hard in the fourth to get back and came up just a little short.” Jayden Yoder knocked down a game-high 22 points, just four off his season high, and netted seven of Solanco’s nine first quarter points. They led the Comet by one and extended the advantage to 24-21 at the break. Elijah Cunningham sparked that quarter, netting six of his 12 points. The Comets regrouped after the break and took control, out pointing the hosts 20-10 with six different players scoring. They led 41-34 heading into the final quarter. Behind eight more points from Yoder, Solanco mounted a comeback,

outscoring the visitors 20-17, but came away with the four-point loss. Trent McDowell chipped in with 11 points, including five in the fourth quarter. Noah Bailey tallied all five of his points in the second half, Austin Wenger hit a three-pointer and Noah Baber went one-for-two from the foul line to round out the scoring. “Austin played great and took two charges,” added Long. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL After picking up back-to-back wins over Northern Lebanon and Warwick, the Mares were looking to make it three in a row last Thursday, February 10 in a home game against Manheim Township. The Lady Streaks, who ended Hempfield’s opportunity for a
Section One title, needed a strong second half to pull off a 53-35 victory. In a nip-and-tuck first half, Olivia Lasko buried a pair of three-pointers and dropped eight of Solanco’s nine first quarter points. The Streaks saw four different players score and managed a slim 10-9 advantage. Both teams were even up in the second quarter, netting 11 each. Lasko canned another triple and finished the half with 13 points. “We were patient on offense and were getting good looks,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “And defensively we were getting the stops. We did a good job hanging with a district qualifying team.” But whatever Township head coach Sean Burkhart said at halftime must have worked because his Streaks opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take control of the game. “They increased their defensive intensity, and we were left with difficult shots,” said McDowell. The hosts finished with four points in the quarter, all at the hands of Lasko, and the Streaks pulled away, netting 15 for a 36-24 advantage with eight minutes remaining. As a tune-up for the sectional wrestling tournament (Feb. 19), Solanco scheduled a non-league match with Donegal the week before and came away with a 42-24 victory. “Nick Evans is the head coach at Donegal,” said Solanco boss Tony Mendez. “I coached Nick and he’s doing a great job there. It’s nice that he’s giving back to the sport. We talked a lot before the match, trying to get the best matchups for both teams to help prepare for sectionals.” The match opened with the 215-pounders. Donegal took the early
lead, posting back-to-back first period falls, and then secured a third fall, at 113, after Solanco’s Caden Rutt decked Nathan Rothstein at 106 to put the Mules on the board. The fifth straight fall of the match went to Solanco’s Weston Bare, with a 52 second result against Mark Overlander, cutting the lead to 18-12. Donegal responded at 126 with a 5-0 decision but won just one match after that. Solanco started its rally with Jared Fulton’s 3:37 fall over Landon Keller at 132 and then picked up forfeit points at 138 and 152. Donegal sandwiched its last win between those forfeit points, earning a tight 8-6 overtime decision over Ben Williams at 145. “This was Ben’s first match coming back from an injury,” said Mendez. “Even though it was a loss, it was good to get a match before sectionals,” said Mendez. Solanco’s second overtime match of the night went to Wade Adams who earned a takedown in the extra time to secure the win. “Wade wrestles 152 but Donegal didn’t have a 152-pounder so we moved him up,” noted Mendez. “It was a competitive match.” Blaine Plastino followed that with a 5-1 decision over Silas Mumper, breaking a 0-0 first period tie with Silas Mumper with three back-points to take the lead for good. Wrapping up the night was Robert Castagna’s pin at 189. Up 4-2 in the first period, Castagna made short work of Stewart Carroll, posting the fall at 2:31. Keeping The Wildlife Wild At Raven Ridge
Tracie Young founded Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in 2015.
Until March 2021, Washington Boro resident Tracie Young had spent six years working a full-time job in addition to running Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRWC). As the need for services, outreach programs, and wildlife emergencies grew exponentially, Young knew she had to make a decision, so she quit her full-time job to dedicate more time and attention to RRWC. Young had opened RRWC in 2015 after receiving permits from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Although located in Washington Boro, RRWC treats animals from roughly 17 counties in Pennsylvania and rehabilitates nearly 2,000 animals every year. RRWC specializes in treating birds of prey, such as vultures, eagles, hawks, and owls, as well as rabies vector species, such as bats, skunks, and groundhogs. “This center is important,” Young explained. “It’s giving wildlife a second chance, which is so important because they need to be here for the next generation.” Most people do not have the knowledge to take care of injured wildlife, which is why Young encourages members of the public to call RRWC if they come across wildlife in need of assistance. “It is our job to keep the public safe and educate, educate, educate,” stated Young. Before ordering food from the 17th Hole Café, which was located in the library’s C.X. Carlson Cultural Room, I had my score card checked to see if I had the best score in my age category. Although I didn’t win a prize, I still had an amazing time. Operated by the Friends of the Quarryville Library, the café offered sandwiches, soups, hot dogs, tater tots, baked goods, and more. I pretty much ordered one of everything because I knew the proceeds were going to the library.

The current partnership between the YMCA of the Roses and Truist began in 2021 with a $10,000 grant to the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center, which works with immigrants and newcomers in York and Lancaster counties to give them the support and resources they need to thrive in their new homes. RRWC from pg 5
PRESIDENTS’ DAY
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, RRWC had to cancel all of its 2020 programs and is still trying to financially recover. Last year during the spring, Young said, the center spent between $1,200 and $1,800 on food that lasted about four weeks for birds of prey. It is up to RRWC to raise funds, bring in donations, feed the animals, and pay for the electric to keep incubators running. Young noted that if she doesn’t have enough funding to treat the animals, she takes money out of her own pocket. As a result of participating in the Extraordinary Give in November 2021, RRWC received nearly $35,000 with the stretch pool. “We have great supporters,” said Young. “We can’t do it without the support of our community. And the volunteers here are amazing. They believe in what we do, they believe in our mission, and they’re fantastic. Lord knows I couldn’t do it all myself.” Some of the nonreleasable animals at RRWC serve as educational ambassadors in its programs. RRWC offers off-site programs for birthday parties, schools, camps, clubs, and more. The programs are suitable for people of all ages and can be tailored to fit the groups’ needs. For more information about RRWC, visit https://ravenridgewild lifecenter.org or search for “Raven Ridge Wildlife Center” on Facebook. To donate to the center, visit https://ravenridgewildlifecenter.org /wish-list.html.

Freedom Life Church will launch a new campus location under the leadership of pastor Derek and Lily Weidman on Sunday, Feb. 27, at Smith Middle School, 645 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. Services for children and adults will begin at 10 a.m. every Sunday. FL Kids will provide interactive lessons for children in fifth grade and younger in the school cafeteria and gymnasium while the worship service takes place in the auditorium. Formerly, beginning in September 2016, a Freedom Life Church campus met weekly at Providence Elementary School. Due to the pandemic and COVID restrictions, the campus closed its doors in March 2020, and many attendees switched to meeting at the Freedom Life main campus located on Noble Road in Christiana. For more details, email info@freedom.life or call 610593-5959.
