Joining Forces For A Great Cause BY COURTNEY MENGEL

For the past 25 years, the Solanco High School (SHS) Interact Club, sponsored by the Rotary International’s Southern Lancaster County Chapter, has given students an opportunity to participate in

meaningful service projects while developing skills and making new friends. According to SHS Interact cClub adviser Todd Brown, the interact club completes local service projects with the hope of raising awareness of resources that are available to people in Lancaster County. hether it be painting, drawing, writing, singing, or playing an instrument, there are many ways to express one’s creativity. When it comes to creative writing, specifically, there are many benefits. People have a platform to share new ideas, explore the human experience, and use their imagination. For Solanco High School (SHS) senior Kara Armstrong, whenever she needs an escape, she puts her emotions on paper. The daughter of Trina and Eric Armstrong of New Providence, Kara recalls writing her first story in third grade. Although she produces a lot of short stories, she enjoys writing flash fiction. Most of her work deals with loss because Kara finds it easier to write about characters with internal conflict when

through history.” During her time as an independent study student with SHS English teacher Jessica Prokay, Kara focused on developing original pieces and revising existing compositions. Recently, Kara was awarded several Scholastic Writing Awards, including a Gold Key, four Silver Keys, and five honorable mentions. The piece that received the Gold Key is titled “Nobody Dies in Disneyland,” which was inspired by Kara’s brother, who shared a rumor with her that no one is allowed to die in Disneyland. According to the tale, emergency responders will resuscitate individuals until they are off the property. “Nobody Dies in Disneyland” is about a girl who is terminally ill and depressed due to her condition. While visiting Disneyland, she finds peace and comfort knowing that she can’t die there.

There are many benefits to walking, running, and biking. Being active can lift people’s moods, puts smiles on their faces, and improve their general health and well-being. However, when there are obstacles preventing people from safely biking to work or walking to their favorite café, it may become difficult to maintain an active lifestyle.

producing shorter works. When it comes to reading, Kara prefers young adult contemporary, and her favorite book is “Wild Blue Wonder” by Carlie Sorosiak. According to Kara, she has been able to hone her creative writing skills during her time at SHS. One of Kara’s eighth-grade teachers helped her with her first submission to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. “It was really helpful to have someone read my work, guide me, and tell me the things I could expect if I decided to pursue writing,” commented Kara. As a sophomore, Kara completed a creative writing class, and last year, she finished a course in modern short stories. “It was interesting that we got to study different writers and see their kind of techniques and what worked for them,” she explained. “It was just cool to see the evolution of how things have gone

Recently, members of the SHS Interact Club collected materials and crafted blankets, which were donated to Project Linus. The national organization collects and distributes blankets to provide a sense of security, warmth, and comfort to adults and children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. The SHS Interact Club partnered with the Oxford High School Interact Club to maximize its efforts, which resulted in a donation of more than 65 blankets. “This was a really great project for the Interact students,” commented Brown. “They were excited about it from the get-go.” First, students organized a donation drive to which students and staff donated materials and funds. Then, over the course of three days, the club members worked diligently sewing, combining materials, and finishing the

Brown noted that the school community was very encouraging, and Scott and Linda Groff provided the club with a generous donation. This is the first Interact club project that SHS sophomores La’Niecia Taylor and Donnette Huber participated in. “I liked doing this,” said La’Niecia. “I enjoyed it. It was for a really good cause.” “We’re glad we were able to help out, and we would definitely do it again,” stated Donnette. “As the students got further into the project, they felt more ownership and said, ‘Wow, I’m really actually making a difference,’ and realized the bigger picture,” explained Brown. “It’s about helping people out and serving others.” To learn more about Project Linus, visit www.project linus.org.

would help encourage active transportation. “The people should have a say in what the borough does to promote active transportation,” said Scott Peiffer, Quarryville Borough manager. “If they have an opinion, they should make that opinion known. If they’re passionate about something they feel needs changed or added or made or done, this is their chance to get it in that plan.” There is also a survey available at the municipal building. The survey can also be completed at www.survey monkey.com/r/Quarryville BoroATP. Data from the committee’s input, the public’s input, and the survey will be used to develop the ATP. “We feel this is something we ought to go for,” stated Peiffer. “Our vision would be that our projects will help people become more active and promote walking rather than always getting in (the) car.” For more information about the Quarryville Borough, visit https://quarryvilleborough.com.

Recently, Quarryville Borough has received grants through PA WalkWorks and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (PA DCNR) to develop an Active Transportation Plan (ATP) for the borough. The ATP encourages people to use walking, running, and biking as a mode of transportation. The plan also addresses access to public transportation and access for users of mobility devices. In addition, the plan is intended to recommend actions, strategies, and potential funding sources to prioritize these improvements. The borough has established an ATP committee, which consists of 15 members who represent a variety of sectors. The first public meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 21, at the Quarryville Borough’s Municipal Building, 300 St. Catherine St., Quarryville. Fulton Takes 4th at Regionals, Qualifies for States

BY MONA STEINHAUER

Solanco’s wrestling team had five matmen compete in the 3A District Three/South Central Regional championships on Friday and Saturday, February 25-26 at Spring Grove High School but only one booked a trip to Hershey’s Giant Center with a fourth-place finish. Jared Fulton, wrestling at 132, went 4-2 to punch his ticket to states. “We were happy to get Jared through,” said head coach Tony Mendez. “It was disappointing though, to go 1-4 in the opening round.” Fulton posted a 7-2 decision over Red Land’s Ryan Beck in the round of 16 but then suffered an 8-4 quarterfinals loss to Garden Spot’s Garrett Gehr. Fulton fell behind 5-0 before a third quarter rally fell short. He shook off that loss with three consolation wins to get to the thirdplace bout. Facing Gehr again, Fulton dropped a 7-3 result and settled

for fourth place. “That kid was tough,” said Mendez. “He wrestled at 138 most of the year and dropped to 130.” Fulton earned a 2:00 fall over Jaciah Whitcomb (Cumberland Valley), and edged Central’s Uriah Warner 2-1 when Warner was called for stalling with seconds remaining, thus gaining the winning point. And his consi-semis match was another fall, this time he put Cedar Cliff’s Aidan Bachman to his back in 4:07. “This will be Jared’s first trip to states,” Mendez noted. “It’s good to have a break at this point to let the body heal.” The state tournament gets underway March 10 and runs through to the 12. Also making the trip to Spring Grove was Weston Bare, Wade Adams, Blaine Plastino, and Robert Castagna. Bare, who qualified for districts two years ago, gave up a second period escape to Jake Mitchell

(Cumberland Valley) and suffered a 1-0 opening round loss at 120. He came back with a 5-0 decision over Hunter Goff (Twin Valley) but then lost a second 1-0 decision, this time to Northern’s Rocco Fratelli, the eventual third place finisher, to end his season. “Weston was right there,” stated Mendez. “The Fratelli kid went on to win two more close matches.” Wrestling at 152, Adams also had a single win sandwiched around a pair of losses. He dropped a 14-0 major decision to the eventual second place finisher, Dominic Frontino (Shippensburg) but rebounded with a 4-2 decision over Tyler Bard (West York) before closing out with a scrappy 10-7 result against Andrew McClune (Warwick). “This was Wade’s first trip and he just wrestled as hard as he could wrestle,” Mendez said. “He had a tough opening round against a returning district champ.” Plastino, a junior, was pinning (5:20) in his opening round matchup against Mitchell Adams (Carlisle) and then suffered a disappointing 5-4 loss to Waynesboro’s Titus Mong. He was down 5-3 in the second period and opened the third period with an escape but could not

take the lead. “Blaine’s first round match was close until the third period,” Mendez recalled. “Overall, he gained valuable experience.” Castagna, wrestling at 189, was the last Mule to step on the mats. He came up against a familiar foe in CV’s Jonathan Lopez in the opening round. Lopez used a five point move in the first period to take control and went on to win 8-5. “Robert just ran out of time,” said Mendez. “That five-point move was hard to come back from. He bet Lopez before in a match before Christmas.” In the consolations, Castagna put Antonio Zeno (Mechanicsburg) to his back in 1:59 but then had the roles reversed in his second consi bout, suffering a 4:51 fall to eventual fourth place finisher Diesel Koser (Shippensburg). “For Wade and Robert, being seniors and becoming regional qualifiers was a great accomplishment for them,” Mendez said. “Weston is another senior, wrestling in a tough weight class. “Blaine and Jared are both juniors,” he went on. “Jared was a regional qualifier two years ago and this year he qualifies for states. Both have another season

to get back here. “Three of our five guys qualified for the first time,” he added. “The long and short of it is that they were wrestling the best they have this year.” INDOOR TRACK At the State Indoor Track Championships held at Penn State Sunday, February 27, Solanco’s Katie Urbine tied her career high, clearing 13 feet to win the pole vault competition. In a field of 13 jumpers, Urbine hit the mark on her second attempt. She finished sixth in the PIAA outdoor finals last spring, clearing 11-6. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Everyone starts their respective sports season with the goal of advancing to playoffs. More often than not, that plan goes awry for one reason or another. But when you sit and look back there are always positives to take away. Such was the case for the girls’ basketball team. They went 3-19 on the year and literally suffered bruises along the way. Arianna Seiberlich missed the season with a torn ACL (soccer), Hannah Wood suffered a meniscus tear and missed over half of the season. Frances Northern had nagging knee injuries that kept her out off and on in December and

again late January. Rachel Armstrong suffered a concussion at the Holiday Tournament and missed the remainder of the season and missing about the last eight games was Martha Weaver with a lower leg fracture. Injuries always play a role, but Solanco took a hit in that department this year. “Despite her injury, Hannah was our emotional leader on the bench and at practice,” said head coach Chad McDowell. Statistically, Olivia Lasko and Kendall Janssen led the way. Lasko finished with 231 points (10.5 ppg avg). Janssen netted 137 points for a 6.3 average. They also topped the rebound chart with Lasko hauling in 198 and Janssen grabbing another 100. “Hannah and Jaelyn Olmeda were our force in the post and on the defensive side,” said McDowell. “Jaelyn was one of our defensive stoppers late in the season while Hannah excelled in the scoring and rebounding part. “Defensive was one of our stronger areas this year,” he added, “and it showed as we were able to play man-to-man in our final three games and were able to win two of those games. “We also rebounded well, winning the battle of the board in 17 of our 22 games.” Offensively Solanco shot 31% from the field, 52% from the foul line and 16% from three-point range. “We will definitely work on that in the off-season,” said McDowell. “Our seniors (Olmeda, K. Janssen, Lasko and Wood) provided great leadership and left everything on the court. They are a vital part of our past two section championship teams, our present and our future (laying the foundation for success). Our returning players have big shoes to fill. I have challenged that group. We need to be better next season and I am confident that we will be.”

Alleviating World Hunger With FMSC BY COURTNEY MENGEL

According to Lora Mangus Wenger, chairperson of the Lancaster County Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event, approximately 6,200 children around the world die each day from hunger and malnutrition-related causes. Founded in 1987, FMSC is a nonprofit organization that aims to alleviate world hunger by hosting MobilePack events, where volunteers hand-pack nutritious meals specifically

designed to assist in reversing and preventing undernutrition. Every day, FMSC meals are distributed to schools, orphanages, clinics, and feeding programs around the world to help break the cycle of poverty. Since the organization was established, FMSC has distributed more than 2 billion meals in nearly 70 countries. The seventh annual three-day FMSC MobilePack event will take place at Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC), 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, from Friday,

March 25, to Sunday, March 27. One thousand volunteers are needed to work during two-hour shifts to provide 300,000 meals in three days. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to give back and show care for our local and global communities,” stated Wenger. “Meeting basic needs through providing food assistance seems simple, but makes a huge positive impact in the life of a person in need.” In order to pack meals safely, volunteers will be screened with questions prior to admission and will be encouraged to wear a mask throughout the event. Hand-washing stations will be implemented this year, and increased

disinfecting practices between shifts per COVID-19 protocols will be in place. All volunteers will need to preregister online. Walk-ins will not be accepted due to shift limits of volunteers, which is necessary for social distancing. Those who sign up for a packing shift are encouraged to donate a minimum of $52. At the price of less than 25 cents a meal, the donation will cover the cost of one box of packed meals, equaling 216 meals, which is the average number a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period. There will be a variety of tasks at the packing event, and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Some jobs will require lifting, while others See FMSC pg 10

For the second year, FMSC will collect food for the Lancaster County Food Hub in response to local food insecurity. The first year this initiative was implemented, FMSC was able to donate 18 bags of food to the Food Hub. Requested items include peanut butter, canned meats, white or brown rice, pouch meals such as Hamburger Helper, whole grain pasta, and boxed macaroni and cheese. “I am excited about FMSC because each year it is amazing to know that our community is taking little steps to make big, positive, life-saving changes in children’s lives all around the world,” commented Wenger. She added, “One outgrowth of our event is that a church from Berks County was inspired to host their own event after having participated in our event. That is exactly what we have been hoping will occur: more MobilePack events taking place, resulting in more people being fed around the world.” For more information about the FMSC MobilePack event at WSMC, readers may email Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail.com or call WSMC at 717-464-2422.
