Art Teacher’s Work Displayed In Arizona Exhibit BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Kesse Humphreys, an art teacher at Solanco High School (SHS), has been creating things with metals for most of his life. Some may find this ironic given the fact that Kesse grew up in Gnome Countryside, where he was surrounded by nature and all things gnome. However, it was Kesse’s dad, Richard Humphreys, who encouraged Kesse to pursue an internship with a local blacksmith, Joseph Daddiego. The internship lasted two years, and Kesse completed it as a student at SHS. “That was just such a fantastic experience, and I think that was a huge influence of me in terms of sculpture and working that into jewelry,” said Kesse. “I feel really lucky to have had that.” Daddiego was a fifth-generation blacksmith from New York City. “This guy

Parking for attendees will be available in front of the church, and an admission donation is strongly suggested. According to Barcus, the mission of touch-a-truck is twofold: to host a community event and to raise funds for CLPC’s “Restore His House” capital campaign for the newly renovated sanctuary, which was built in the 1700s by a group of Christians who came together for worship, music, fellowship, and growth in their knowledge and love of God. Notable changes to the church include the newly exposed balcony, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, the restored ceiling with gold leaf details, the restored antique
German stained-glass windows, and the refurbished wooden pews, dating to circa 1914. Renovations took about a year and a half to complete. Barcus noted that there will be activities inside the Family Life Center building, and there might be food and beverages available for purchase as well. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, April 3, from noon to 2 p.m. Those interested in bringing a vehicle to the touch-a-truck fundraiser should email Barcus at annamarybarcus@gmail.com at least one week prior to event. n the fall of 2021, the congregation at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, was divided into several groups for a “40 Days in the Word” Bible study. Each group had to develop a plan where the members would do something good to benefit others. A Bible study group of mothers wanted to organize an event that would provide fun for kids, so they decided to plan a touch-a-truck event. On Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., trucks, tractors, and more will fill the parking lots in
front of the church’s Family Life Center building, which is located across the street from CLPC. People are invited to touch the vehicles, climb inside them, and see them up close. Event coordinator Anna Mary Barcus confirmed that there will be a golf cart, a milk truck, a fire engine truck, a skid loader, a dump truck, construction apparatuses, and an antique Army truck. “I just think it’ll be really fun to have the community come,” said Barcus. “People can bring their families and have a good morning. It’s great we can host these events and be a place for people to have a great time together.”

came out of a storybook like my dad,” commented Kesse. “He was full of so many life lessons, and one that really stuck with me was, ‘the only limit you have is the limit you put on yourself.’” According to Kesse, these words pushed him to do things that he otherwise wouldn’t have done. After graduating from SHS, Kesse went to a watchmaking school in Lititz. “My professors were really inspirational and pushed me to do some complicated stuff,” he explained. After finishing school, Kesse found himself working for Rolex, but two years later, he realized he wanted to go to school to become a teacher. The Tyler School of Art and Architecture appealed to him because he could enroll in a metals

Kesse Humphreys’ work “Invasive Species”
tion at the Mesa Arts Center, Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mesa, Arizona. The exhibition highlights exceptional contemporary crafts from across the U.S. that represent innovation and quality in the traditional craft mediums of ceramics, metals, jewelry, wood, glass, papermaking, and book arts. Kesse is among 36 artists, representing 15 states, who are showcasing 45 artworks in this exhibition. “Invasive Species” was inspired by mile-a-minute weed, which grows like a vine and steals light from the plants below it. Kesse thought about what it means to be invasive and what else besides a weed could be considered invasive. He decided to represent these plants using silver so that the plants look pretty and have value, but they’re also dangerous. The work is a cuff that goes on a person’s hand, and the vines intertwine with the fingers. Kesse noted that it restricts movement, looks dangerous, and can be uncomfortable to wear. SHS Visual Arts Department chair Candace Rakers said, “Kesse is an outstanding educator and metalsmith who innovates exquisitely crafted one-of-a-kind works.” The Contemporary Crafts exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum will be on view through Sunday, April 24. Post-Season Competition and Award Winners
Jared Fulton’s trip to the PIAA Championships at the Giant Center March 10-12 may have been shorter than he would have liked but head coach Tony Mendez knows that his experience is invaluable.
“He’s a junior and will be back in the room next year,” said Mendez. “Now he knows what states is like and what you need to do to get there. He can share that experience and use it as motivation to get further next year.”
Fulton (152) opened with a 5-2 win over Nate Shippey of Interboro in the Round of 32 Thursday, March 10. He held a 2-1 lead after two periods and secured the win with a takedown in the final seconds.
In the Round of 16, Fulton dropped a 5-0 decision to eventual second place finisher Matt Repos of Central Dauphin. His trip to states continued with the second round of consolations on Friday where he suffered a 15-6

defeat to Chad Ozias of Connellsville, the eventual seventh place finisher. “Jared held a brief lead in the second period and then near the end of the third he was down by three and went for the win,” said Mendez. “He wound up giving up five points, but he was going for the win. “You always go in expecting to medal but the competition is so tough,” he added. “Jared was right there. He puts in the time, attends camps and does the weightlifting all to give himself the best opportunity.” After going 15-5 last year, dictated by Covid, Fulton racked up a 38-10 mark this season and currently sits at 67-27. Fulton won a LancasterLebanon League title, was second at sectionals and placed fourth at the regional meet. DISTRICT SWIMMING Solanco’s swim team of one, Addie Scott, punched her ticket to the PIAA Swimming Championships with a pair of solid performances at the District Three Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School March 4-5. Scott, a junior, swam both of her events on Saturday and just 40 minutes apart. She posted a 52.67 in the 100 free and then recorded a 58.12 in the 100 back, leaving her in sixth place in both events. Last year in the district meet Scott was fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 200. INDOOR TRACK Pennsylvania Track and
Field Coaches Association recently voted on the 2021-22 indoor track and field all-state teams where Solanco’s Katie Urbine, for her stellar efforts in the pole vault, was named to the First Team. She also recently placed sixth at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Saten Island, New York, clearing 12 feet, ı inch. Also, of note on the indoor track scene - former Solanco standout Anna Cooney, a member of the Widener track and field team, placed fifth in the shot put at the 2022 NCAA Division Three indoor championships on March 12, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Cooney tossed the shot 45-7.25 and in doing so, claimed her first All-American honor in indoor track and the second one of her career after also placing fifth in last year’s outdoor nationals. She becomes only the fifth Widener woman to earn AllAmerican status in indoor track and field. BASKETBALL For their efforts on the hardwoods, three Solanco athletes, as voted on by the coaches, received all-star recognition. Jayden Yoder, the team’s leading scorer (11.1 ppg avg. with 34 threes) was a Section Three honorable mention selection while Olivia Lasko, the girls’ leading scorer with a 10.5 ppg avg, received first team and allacademic team recognition. Kendall Jansen was voted to the all-defensive team. The girls team also received the Sportsmanship Award. See Sports pg 7

women’s basketball AllSportsmanship team for the 2021-22 season. The allsportsmanship team recognizes student-athletes who epitomize the ideals of sportsmanship. Student-athletes selected to the team demonstrate fair play, graciousness in victory and respectfulness in defeat. Each has been chosen by their coach as a respresentative who emodies the Division III spirit. WRESTLING AWARD WINNERS Solanco’s wrestling team wrapped up the 2021-22 season with their end of the year awards banquet at Fireside Tavern on Tuesday, March 15 where head coach Tony Mendez and his staff announced the following award winners. Wade Adams, a regional qualifier at 152, was this year’s recipient of the Ivan Steel “Iron Man” award. He also received a three year dedication award. Adams finished with 37 career wins and 15 career pins. He was a AAA Section II 6th place finisher in 2020, an LL tournament 7th place finisher in 2021 and this year was an academic allstar and a Section II 4th place finisher. Robert Castagna (189) received the Ray Long Most Improved Wrestler Award and a four year dedication award. Castagna was a L-L League Second Team all-star, a 5th place finisher in the L-L League tournament and was a 2nd place finisher in sectionals in addition to qualifying for regionals. Last year Castagna, who finished with 55 career wins and 18 pins, was a L-L League honorable mention all-star. Receiving the Carlton Shindler Outstanding Wrestler and MVP award was Jared Fulton, this year’s PIAA state qualifier. The junior was 4th in regionals, 2nd in sectionals, a L-L League first
team all-star and a L-L League tournament champ who also received the Most Pins Award. Connor Musser (132) received the Team Choice Award and Steven Williams (126) received a three year dedication award. He capped his career with 42 wins and 23 pins. Williams was a second team all-star and last year finished 4th in sectionals and 5th in the L-L League tournament. With 72 career wins and 34 pins, Weston Bare (120) also received a three year dedication award. Bare was a firstteam and academic all-star, finished 2nd in the L-L League tournament, was second in sectionals and was also a regional qualifier. Last year he was 4th in the league tournament and 3rd in sectionals. Bare was also a regional qualifier in 2020, a third place finisher in sectionals and a 4th place winner in the league tournament. Junior high award winners included Braedon Bickford (Keith Kreider award), Logan DellaVecchia (Team Leadership Award) and Tyler Kreider (Coaches Choice award. Bickford and DellaVecchia also received three year dedication awards.

ENB Opens New Office In Quarryville Ephrata National Bank (ENB) has expanded further into southern Lancaster County with the opening of a new, full-service community banking office in Quarryville. The office, located at 101 E. State St., Quarryville, opened its doors on March 14. The Quarryville site marks the bank’s 13th full-service banking location, with others located in Lancaster, Berks and Lebanon counties. The opening is a part of the bank’s strategy to grow by expansion into new communities. Leading the Quarryville team is community banking manager Kathleen Thorne. The highly interactive, rapid-paced PMI will focus on project management essentials using real-world applications through interactive project management courses and contractor case studies. Participants will obtain the management tools and skills needed for individual success and for making a positive impact on their organization. Graduates will gain a comprehensive understanding of successfully handling all aspects of project management. The PMI is designed for company owners, project managers, estimators and any employee involved in managing projects. The program will include 80 hours of instruction in two non-concurrent 40-hour sessions with an interim period between classes for applied assignments and reporting. Participants must attend both weeks of the PMI to complete the course.
