Applications Open For Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
After the two varsity softball coaches at Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) resigned following the 2021 season, Earl Rutledge Jr. did not immediately jump on the opportunity to fill the vacancy. Growing up in Quarryville, Rutledge always thought he’d end up coaching softball at Solanco High School (SHS). But after praying and thinking about the odds of not just one, but two coaching positions to open up, Rutledge decided to reach out to his daughter, Mallory Rutt, to ask if she’d like to join him as his assistant. At first, Rutt was hesitant because she currently teaches Spanish at Solanco School District, so she had to get permission from her principal before she could apply for the position. After she received the green light, she and her dad made their potential employer aware that they were a package deal. Either they would coach together or not at all. This See New Coaches pg 4
Honorees from the 2020 Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant, which was held in 2019, included (from left) Caroline Arrowsmith, second runnerup; Julia Gavin, Miss Solanco 2020; Anna Kreider, first runner-up; and Nicole Kudia, Miss Congeniality.
“In my opinion, the most valuable experience that I gained from participating in the pageant was the confidence to interview in front of a panel of judges,” said Marla Davis. “The interview skills I learned during the pageant carried me through my college entrance interview and job interviews.” Davis was crowned Miss Solanco in 2011, and for the past seven years, she has been a board member of the Quarryville Teenage Club, whose main activity is hosting the Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant. The pageant has been held annually since 1956, with the exceptions of 2020 and 2021, but the Quarryville Teenage Club has announced that
applications for the 2023 Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant are currently open. Girls interested in becoming a contestant must reside in the Solanco School District and must be juniors or seniors during the 2022-23 school year at Solanco High School or through a private educational institution. Girls must complete an application and submit a letter of intent by Saturday, April 30. “We have not had a pageant for the past two years due to COVID, so I am excited for contestants to be able to be back on stage in front of an audience, and for our current Miss Solanco, Julia Gavin, to have the honor of passing on the crown,” commented Davis.
Once board members receive the letters of intent, applicants will be sent an email with information about orientation. A parent or guardian must accompany applicants to this meeting. Rehearsals for the pageant will be held on Wednesday evenings during the months of October and November. The 2023 Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant will be held in the Solanco High School auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. According to Quarryville Borough manager Scott Peiffer, the scholarship pageant is modeled after the Miss America Pageant, so scoring will be based on a personal interview, an onstage interview, a talent, and active and evening wear. The winner will be given the crown, the
title, and a $2,000 scholarship. Peiffer emphasized that there are many benefits to participating in the pageant, such as developing interviewing, performing, modeling, and public speaking skills. The board searches for highly qualified judges who typically come from outside of the Solanco area. Most judges have either participated in or have judged in the Miss America system, so they know what to look for and how to score. To apply for the pageant, visit https://bit.ly/MissSolancoPageant. For more information, contact contestant coordinator Marla Davis at 717-475-5616, email misssolancoorg@gmail.com, or search for “Miss Solanco Scholarship Pageant” on Facebook.

From 2016 to 2019, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, hosted an annual Rails & Ales event, where attendees could sample unique craft beer of all types from a variety of breweries while surrounded by the massive, historic trains in the museum’s 100,000-squarefoot Rolling Stock Hall. Shortly before the museum’s 2020 event, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the museum to temporarily close its doors. After a two-year hiatus, Rails & Ales will return on Saturday, April 9. General admission will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. People must be age 21 or older to attend with the presentation of valid photo identification. Attendees will be strongly encouraged to wear masks when not eating or drinking and to social distance. There will be hand sanitizing stations around the museum, and hand washing stations will be setup near the portable restrooms. “I am definitely looking forward to seeing brewers come back into the hall,” stated volunteer and program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “We have some great returning brewers from past years, but also quite a few brewers that are new to our event. Getting to see actual visitors out there enjoying the event, enjoying the beer, and having a good time is really exciting. We miss having peo-
ple with us.” As of March 23, 17 breweries had confirmed their attendance at the event. Among them are Bespoke Brewing, Be Here Brewing Company, Lancaster Brewing Company, Spring House Brewing Company, Tröegs Independent Brewing, Big Dog Craft Brewing, and Iron Hill Brewery. “This event is a really great chance to experience breweries that are hyperlocal to Strasburg, from the greater Lancaster County area, as well as from York County and Chester County,” said Myers. Food from vendors, including Smokestack BBQ, Brotherly Love Scratch Kitchen, Blazin’ J’s, Spanish Island Food Truck, Strasburg Bakery, and Ruga Rue Jerky and Banquet Hall, will also be available for purchase. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event, which can be done by searching for “Rails &

watch Miller run practices. “I learned a lot,” said Rutledge. “As a coach, I’m very competitive about winning, but I want to teach you values that carry on after softball. Brett Miller does that so well at Solanco that people do not realize what he teaches besides softball.” After Rutt graduated from SHS in 2011, she attended Messiah University, where she studied Spanish and continued to play softball. She then taught at a school in Chester County, and while there, she coached a seventh-grade softball team for three years. Rutt noted that her experience coaching the team was a good way to ease into a different side of the sport. While Rutt was in college, her dad served as an assistant coach to his sister-in-law. The first year Rutledge and his sister-inlaw coached together, the team won eight games, and two years

(Today) he’d probably come to practice, knowing that guy. He loved softball that much. I’m sure we’d have him in LSHS gear.” Both father and daughter are

It truly is a family affair. “In general, we’re just excited for the season,” stated Rutt. “We have a good group of girls. They’re respectful, they’re fun, and the sky’s the limit for a lot of them. past January, LSHS announced that the father and daughter would get their wish. “I’ve always wanted to coach with Mal,” said Rutledge. “It just looks like it’s made to be.” Before he became a pitching coach when Rutt was 10 years old, Rutledge had prior experience as an athlete playing men’s fastpitch softball from the 1970s to the early 2000s. He traveled the world and played for 12 different teams over the years. On March 5, Rutledge was inducted into the USA/PA Softball of PA Hall of Fame. It wasn’t until 2007 that Rutledge learned how to coach a varsity softball team. As a freshman at SHS, Rutt was one of the two starting pitchers for the varsity team. Her coach, Brett Miller, had injured his arm, so Miller asked Rutledge to pitch at the team’s batting practice. He decided to stay around and

Many years ago, when Dani Trussell and her family lived in Lititz, she would walk her son to the park. On the way, she met a woman who would sit on her porch and work on quilts. Trussell got to know the woman, and she taught Trussell, who already knew how to sew clothing, the art of quilting. In the last dozen years, Trussell has created between 35 and 50 quilts, most of which she has given away. Now, Trussell will share some of her knowledge of quilting at the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club event titled “Quilt Making Memories” at a luncheon to be held on Wednesday, April 6, at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lancaster. In addition to Trussell’s presentation and display of handmade quilts, Annie Friedrichs will share how “Perfect Love Overcomes Inadequacy.” When Trussell first met the woman who would teach her to quilt, the woman was making a Cathedral quilt. “A true (Cathedral quilt) is one of the most tedious to make,” said
Trussell, who spent the next six months working on one, finally creating a 3-by-3-foot square. After Trussell’s son went to school, she took a job outside the home, and she hung up her needle for a while. “I promised myself I would do a full-size quilt when I retired,” recalled Trussell. Now, Trussell keeps a stash of brightly colored fabrics that feed her hobby, along with a number of carefully folded completed quilts. Among them is a wall hanging decorated with 16 breeds of dogs; Trussell plans to donate the wall hanging to an animal rescue so it can be auctioned. Trussell also has a quilt she made for herself in shades of blue against a white backdrop called Four Winds. Other patterns she has sewn include Mirror Mirror, Pinwheel, Cathedral Star, Hourglass Wreath, and Log Cabin. When Trussell cannot quilt a creation herself, she uses the services of long-arm quilter Delania Lefever in Manheim. Trussell noted that she is unusual among quilters because she chooses a fabric first and then finds a pattern she thinks will work well with it. She also creates her own
patterns, as she did when she found a fabric decorated with bees. “I couldn’t find a pattern I wanted to make with it, and I thought the pattern had to be sunflowers,” she said. The pattern she created is called Summer Flight. The black backing of the quilt is covered with white-stitched outlines of butterflies, bees, and dragonflies. Rescuing quilts is another of Trussell’s hobbies. “This is an 80-year-old baby quilt signed HME 1940,” said Trussell, holding up the cream, pink, and blue quilt. “It’s one of the best examples of an applique quilt I have ever seen. Her stitches are totally invisible.” Trussell has plans for specific quilts she hopes to make in the future. “I want to do a Civil War quilt. I have been collecting Civil War reproduction fabrics,” she said, adding
Dani Trussell displays a quilt made with a pattern she created herself.
that she plans to use muted tones for the project. There is a cost to attend the luncheon, and reservations are required by Friday, April 1. Those who wish to attend should call 717-951-0773.

Even as a baby, Hunter Bristow loved trains. “We call him the train master,” said his grandma Donna Frias. In early March, Hunter got to experience the ride of a lifetime when Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley arranged for the 10-year-old from Lititz to spend the day as a train engineer with Amtrak. Hunter was born with osteochondrodysplasia, a rare hereditary bone and cartilage condition. After a surgical mistake three years ago, he was paralyzed and now uses a wheelchair to get around. Although he was eligible for his wish in 2019, he had to wait a few years due to the pandemic. When the big day finally arrived, Hunter was all smiles as he got ready to board the train at the Lancaster Amtrak station.
“Ever since he’s been a little kid, we’ve been buying him toy trains and taking him on train rides,” noted Hunter’s father, Daniel Bristow. “He probably has thousands and thousands of trains at home. He’s always looking for new ones and different ones.” Hunter’s love of trains might come from his grandfather Herland Frias, who is a retired Amtrak worker. “From day one, Hunter got into trains,” Herland noted. “He’s taken train rides all over the place - to Chicago, to Boston.” Cara Feldman, vice president of development for Make-AWish, explained that Hunter’s wish included the opportunity to punch tickets on the train and blow the train whistle as the train traveled from Lancaster to Philadelphia, where Hunter and his family, including his father; his mother,
Hunter shows off his new T-shirt as he waits to board the train.
Shannon; and his 5-year-old brother, Brooks, took a train to Newark, Del. In Delaware, the family enjoyed a private tour of the Amtrak training center, including the opportunity to experience a ride simulator. Make-A-Wish grants lifechanging wishes for children with critical illnesses. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley has granted more than 7,500 wishes for local children. At his send-off, Hunter was
greeted by many of his classmates from his fourth-grade class at Lititz Elementary School, who surprised their friend with posters and well wishes. “Hunter is a big part of our classroom,” said classmate Hadley Reed. “ We’re really happy to be here for him.” Herland noted that seeing his grandson’s wish granted was very touching. “This is such a special day for us,” he said. “It’s very emotional. We hope this will lift up his spirits, because he’s been through a lot.”
