Solanco

On your mark, S.E.T., go!
The Southern End Tracksters are in the starting blocks, preparing to start a third season.
The Tracksters are an Amateur Athletic Association (AAU) track and field team operated by Solanco High School head coach Jen McDowell. It is made up of athletes ages 4 through 18 from the Solanco, Penn Manor, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts.
“We have started this camaraderie in the Southern End,” said McDowell. “That was the whole idea of the Southern End Tracksters. To get other people involved. Track is one of those unique sports. We’ve got rivals, but not like you do in a lot of other sports. We are there to support and guide each other. My kids are learning from some of the Penn Manor coaches. Penn Manor kids are learning from us. We’re seeing it pay off already at the high school level.”
There is no cost to join the Southern End Tracksters program, but participants must pay to join the AAU and pay an entry fee for meets. Athletes can pay for a uniform or borrow one. Anyone interested in joining the Tracksters can email McDowell at southernendtracksters @gmail.com.
The Tracksters club is a W-9 nonprofit seeking business sponsorships as the team continues to grow. There were 12 members in the first season, most of whom
were on Solanco’s high school squad. That number grew to 55 last year. “It was a goal of mine when I took over the (Solanco High School) track program (five
years ago),” McDowell said. “My goal was to get some of those younger ones involved in it. Last year, when word started getting around that I was getting all these

Swift Middle School students recently took a trip around the globe without leaving the building.
Swift seventh-graders showed their projects to classmates, family members, and Clermont Elementary students March 14 during the school’s annual Explorers’ Fair. Social studies teacher Justin Zellman said students were focusing on 15th- and 16th-century European explorers during the Age of Discovery. Zellman’s class and Sara Pizzo’s ELA (English and language arts) class spent a month collaborating on the project.
“My class focused on the creation of artifacts and the creation of trifolds to make it into this big fair,” said Zellman. Pizzo explained how her class went about the project. “The ELA process of the explorers’ project focuses heavily on the paragraph development and research aspects,” she said. “Students spend about a week conducting a plethora of research to learn all about their explorer. From there, they spend about a week to a week and a half developing paragraphs that focus on their research questions. Each of their research questions focused on different parts of their explorer’s life, such as childhood, achievements, and legacy, to name a few.”
kids, I was still getting lots of emails. We want the parents to know there is an option to do something over the summer.”
Twice-weekly practices will begin in early May for athletes in sixth grade and younger. When junior high and high school athletes join once school ends, there will be three or four practices a week, most in the evening, but McDowell is considering adding some morning workouts. “None of the practices are mandatory, but obviously if you practice more, you learn more,” McDowell said. Some practices will be held at Solanco High School, and others will take place at Penn Manor High School. The first meet will be in Coatesville on Saturday, June 14.
“I am hoping they will enjoy track, learn the events, and be part of our team when they hit junior high and high school,” said McDowell. “But most importantly, I hope they learn how to work as a team, set goals individually, and learn lifelong lessons.”
Until McDowell started the Tracksters, there was no club in the area for younger track athletes to practice with experienced coaches. “Track and field doesn’t have a feeder program,” she said. “We’re not like soccer and football, where they start really young, and a lot of them aren’t exposed to it. That’s one thing we noticed last year when some of the younger ones came in and said, ‘Oh, this is fun, and it gives us something to do over the summer.’”
AAU also offers the chance for athletes to learn events such as the javelin or hurdles that are not held during junior high meets. “Kids will come to me next year with two years of jav experience. Normally, I get a freshman in, and I have to explain to them, ‘OK, this is a jav.’ They can start hurdles at age 11 in AAU. That’s a huge help. There are a lot of opportunities for them.”
After the regular season is
If you have at least 40 years of wisdom behind you and ride a motorcycle (doesn’t matter what you ride), we would like to invite you to join us. We are the Eastern Pa. Chapter of the Retreads Motorcycle Club. An International Motorcycle Club with Chapters in the U.S., U.K., Canada and New Zealand. Our specific Chapter holds breakfasts monthly in Lancaster at the Golden Corral, in Myerstown, at the Country Fare Restaurant, in Quakertown at Quakertown Family Restaurant and in Kinzers at A&J’s Twisted Kitchen. After breakfast (weather permitting), we hold rides, usually with the destination being somewhere that serves ice cream. Aside from the breakfasts there is always something happening with the Retreads M/C, whether it be Rallies (International or State), weekend rides, weeklong excursions, meet for Dinner events, mini golf…. There is always something happening. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, and you like to ride, check us out on Facebook or our Web Site (www.easternparetreads.com). Or better yet come out and meet us in person at one of the breakfasts. With that said, even if you are not 40 years of age, you are still more than welcome to come out to our breakfasts and ride with us.
Thank you
Swift students utilize research and the RACE strategy (restate, answer, cite, and explain) to form paragraphs, said Pizzo. “The RACE strategy acts as a formula for creating paragraphs,” Pizzo added. Once students are finished with their drafts, they had numerous review checks with Mr. Zellman and I and with their peers to ensure their paragraphs were well polished.”
The process is designed with a main goal in mind. “I’m hoping they become experts on their explorer,” Zellman said. “I want them to have fun with it. I want them to be engaging and include their audience members. Before this project, we focused on general explorers in my class. This is opportunity for them to dive deep into one certain explorer.”
Pizzo added, “When I started the project with them, none of the students could tell me anything about their explorer. Then, on Friday, during the fair, I heard dozens of students reciting facts about the explorer as if it were second nature. It is so impactful when I am able to distinctively see their learning and knowledge grow while also seeing their creative nature come to life.”
After family members perused the presentations, between 80 and 100 pupils from adjacent Clermont Elementary came for a visit. “It’s a fun time, but it’s busy,”
Zellman said.
Naomi Gentry, Emma Brabson, and Brette Dawley teamed up for a project on Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias, who was the first European to navigate around the southern tip of Africa.
“He discovered the Cape of Good Hope,” Naomi said. “We explained his achievements and what he did.”
The group made a map and built a miniature replica of Dias’ boat.
“We made things he used while exploring,” said Emma.
Brette said, “It’s more of a firsthand experience instead of sitting in a classroom. It’s more realistic, and it helps you remember things about our past, our present, and our future.”
She enjoyed completing the project alongside her classmates.
“Working with a group can help in any project that you’re doing,” said
Brette. “There are a lot of people who can help with input, and if you’re not sure about something, you can ask for help.”
Kenny Sheets, Collin Smith, Brandt Underwood, and Nate
Ryan researched Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer who was the first European to reach India by sea.
“We were working on this for four weeks, and we each had to

FL Kids at Freedom Life Church will host its annual Easter Eggstravaganza at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood, on Saturday, April 19. During the hunt portion of the day, children will be able to search for more than 20,000 plastic eggs that will be placed in the park by church volunteers. “Eggs will be placed in a big field and scattered. Golden eggs will have prizes,” noted Lancaster County FL Kids leader Ashley Kauffman.
Activities will begin at 10 a.m. with train rides, a petting zoo and inflatables. “Stoltzfus Homestead will be bringing goats, ducks and rabbits. There will be moon bounces. Two are obstacle courses,
and two are bounce houses,” explained Kauffman. “There will also be face painting, temporary water tattoos and some balloon (activities).”
Members of the Rawlinsville Fire Company are expected to bring their trucks for children to enjoy as well. Concessions will offer free snacks, including, popcorn, chips, water and Philly soft pretzels.
After 11 a.m., families will be directed to the large field area at the top of the hill for the Easter egg scramble. Designated spaces will be marked and organized by age groups.
At approximately 11:25 a.m., children will be given the signal to fill their baskets, buckets and bags with plastic eggs. Most of the eggs will be filled with candy,
while a few of them will contain a paper that reveals a prize winner. There will be 10 prizes for elementary-age children and 10 prizes for preschool-age children. The event is open to the public, and there is no cost for food or activities. “It’s meant to be a blessing (to the community),” said Kauffman, adding, “The Easter Eggstravaganza is one of my favorite days of the year. To see the smiles on the kids’ faces because they get to be outside with their family and friends and just getting to act like kids is the best. We get to be part of making family memories.”
For more information about the event, call Freedom Life Church at 610-593-5959 or visit www .freedom.life/upcoming-events.

The program will be “Living Your Best Life,” and it will feature discussion of the novel “The Collected Regrets of Clover” by Mikki Brammer. Mary Lawhead, Caring Hospice volunteer coordinator, will lead a reflection and discussion with a panel of local professionals representing the legal field; palliative, hospice, and restorative care; social work; nursing; and assistance with end-of-life arrangements. In addition, the club sponsors two scholarships for graduating Lampeter-Strasburg High School seniors; provides support to civic organizations, such as veterans’ groups, animal shelters, local fire companies, and the Strasburg-Heisler Library; and helps people who have experienced an unexpected hardship or who have a specific need.

Fifty-three local law enforcement agencies in Lancaster, Adams, Perry, and York counties are joining Pennsylvania State Police and approximately 300 municipal agen-
cies statewide to conduct a targeted aggressive-driving enforcement wave that began March 17 and will run through Sunday, April 27. The goal of targeted enforce -
ment is to reduce the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries, and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket.
The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone awareness. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other aggressive actions, will also be cited.
The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT’s
investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

completed, athletes can compete in a district-qualifying meet at Millersville and a regional qualifier meet in Coatesville for the opportunity to earn a trip to the national event. The AAU Junior Olympics will take place Monday, July 28, through Saturday, Aug. 2, in Humble, Texas, a suburb of Houston.
In its first two years, the Tracksters sent several performers to the Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa, and Greensboro, N.C.
“Ultimately, as these kids get more advanced in AAU, there’s an opportunity for them to go to the national level, and scholarships are available,” said Tracksters’ assistant coach Joe Rineer.
Mason Shertzer, an eighth-grader from Solanco who throws the shot put, discus, and javelin, competed in North Carolina last season. “It’s cool I get to travel to someplace new,” Mason said.
Solanco fifth-grader Kennedy Burrell and eighth-grader Jose Dominguez have enjoyed their experiences with the Tracksters and plan to compete again this summer.
“I like throwing, and I like my coaches,” said Kennedy, who participates in the discus and shot put. “All the coaches really help, and everyone encourages me. It’s a good environment.”
Jose is currently competing in the shot put and discus on Solanco’s junior high team and will be able to throw the javelin with the Tracksters this summer. “Everyone supports each other,” Jose said. “It’s an extra time to practice and compete.”
